GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

NOTICE!

Harris County Municipal Utility District No. 105 is contracting to purchase drinking water from two nearby districts while MUD 105 builds new water treatment facilities for its system. Construction of the interconnect facilities with the other districts will be complete within two weeks. When the new water supplies are activated, there may be a temporary discoloration of water coming from the new sources. Also, water pressure may be lower while receiving water through the interconnect facilities. Water from other districts will meet Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) standards in all respects. To ensure adequate water in MUD 105 while new facilities are under construction, MUD 105 will employ Stage 1 Drought Response Measures to reduce water consumption. This means outdoor water use will be limited to Tuesdays and Saturdays for customers with even numbered addresses and Wednesdays and Sundays for customers with odd-numbered addresses. Watering of common areas such as esplanades, parks and sports fields will be limited to Mondays and Fridays. Outdoor water use will be prohibited between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM. If you have questions, please contact Customer Service at Southwest Water Company at 713-405-1750.

ASTRODOME PLAN ON NOVEMBER BALLOT COURT VOTES UNANIMOUSLY TO ALLOW VOTERS OPPORTUNITYTO DECIDE ON FUTURE OF THE “EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD”

Harris County Commissioners Court voted unanimously this morning to give Harris County voters the opportunity to decide the fate of the Harris County Domed Stadium, the world-famous Astrodome, owned by county taxpayers. The court’s decision means voters will decide on November 5th whether to allow the county to issue up to $217 million in bonds to finance the redesign and redevelopment of the former stadium, which has remained empty and largely unused since 2009. The exact amount of bonds to be issued and the amount of the required property tax increase to pay off those bonds has not yet been determined, but would be part of the ballot language presented to voters. “One of the most frequent questions I have heard in my six and a half years as county judge has been ‘What are we going to do with the Astrodome’,” Emmett said. “Now the voters will finally get to decide.” After a lengthy multi-year process in which the county unsuccessfully sought private proposals with funding for the Astrodome, the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation unveiled a proposal in June called “The New Dome Experience.” The plan calls for converting the Astrodome to a modern multipurpose venue with open space that could play host to a multitude of sports, exhibitions and community events, including activities of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. If approved by voters in November, the repurposing of the Astrodome would take approximately 30 months, allowing it to play a key role in the hosting of Super Bowl LI in February 2017.

Millions of people have difficulty reading. That’s because, despite what many people think, literacy issues are not just relegated to children and young adults. To improve literacy in America, we must consider readers of all ages and backgrounds. Here are some tips to help you improve and encourage reading and literacy. Here’s How: 1. Read books every day and let people see you do it. You may be a role model (to your child, your niece or nephew or some other individual in your family or circle of acquaintances). 2. Get involved with your local library. Many libraries offer literacy programs, which encourage reading in your community. See what you can do to help. 3. Talk about reading. Ask questions about what the individuals in your life are reading.

Please join us for a fun round of golf and help raise money to find a cure for Kennedy’s Disease! Kennedy’s Disease is a debilitating, genetic disease that robs its victims of a vitality of life - eventually leaving them completely impaired for life, with progression of disability the absolute outcome. Murray Williams, William “Billy” Noack and Ted Noack, Jr. are 3 local men diagnosed with KD. Since KD is a genetic disorder, we are racing against the clock to find a cure before it affects their children and grandchildren. There is little known about KD, so those affected have found themselves below the radar for medical research. We are working hard to change this; with your help, we can! For more information, contact Ed Noack 713-416-1511 or Murray Williams, 281-392-3603 or visit our website: kdgolfscramble.com for full details. RAFFLE! 1. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
