LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE

Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma. Nevertheless, if you lose or find a pet, the email list on the website has been very helpful in reuniting dogs and their families.

WEBSITE

Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news, quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms and documents. If you think of anything you would like added, please let us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at www.hearthstonehoa.org.

HEARTHSTONE HOA EMAIL ALERTS

The addresses will not be sold, distributed or used for any purpose other than association business. Your address will not even be shared among group members. Messages sent to the group will be limited to those authorized by the HOA Board of Directors. If you have already joined the email group, you do not need to do so again.

HEARTHSTONE EXTERIOR MODIFICATIONS

When making any changes to the exterior of your home, please keep in mind that you must first submit an application and receive written approval. An application can be obtained by sending a request to customercare@pcmi-us.com. The PCMI call center is manned by three people. The main number is 281-870-0585. The hours are 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Fridays.

HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB

The email alerts group has migrated to the new, improved website. You no longer need to send an email to the management company. Just register at the site using “Join our Mailing Lists” on the opening page. You will be automatically added to the email group.

Hearthstone Garden Club begins a new year bringing the irresistible promise of a new garden, new friends and lots of fun! The theme for our 35th year as the Hearthstone Garden Club is “Back to Basics with the Best Little Garden Club in Texas - Recycle, Renew, Rejoice!”

This group will be used to quickly but sparingly, get information out to members between newsletters. If you would like these messages sent to more than one email address, just register again with each address you want included in the group.

Under the direction of our new president, Cyndi Pruett, our goal this year is to continue working, learning and having fun with gardening - Texas style! Great speakers, a community plant sale, auction and flower show and various field trips have all been planned for the year.

Copperfield Resident for 20 years! We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to join in with us. Proceeds from the club go to scholarship recipients and beautification projects here in Hearthstone. Our meetings will be held at 7:00 PM on the third Tuesday of each month at the Hearthstone Country Club. Everyone is welcome, so please consider making this your year to join the Hearthstone Garden Club. You can look forward to meeting new friends and getting new decorating ideas for your home and your gardens. We hope to see you at our September meeting. NEXT MEETING Tuesday, Sept. 17th Hearthstone Country Club Ladies Locker Room 7:00 PM - Social 7:30 PM - “Googling your Garden” Program 8:15 PM - Business Meeting

Alyssum, Dusty Miller, Violas and Snapdragons will be available for $16 per flat (There are 18 plants per flat). Preorders can be picked up then or delivered to your home for a $5 fee. Please contact Cathy Coby at 832-978-3292; cobycat1@swbell.net or Mary Starr at 832-427-1421; mjmartinstarr@msn.com, if you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help at the plant sale. Be sure to tell your friends and neighbors about the sale. This fundraiser not only helps support our scholarship program, but it also beautifies our yards and our community!

“Googling your garden” Our goal for the September meeting of Hearthstone Garden club is to encourage you to get back to gardening basics in your own yard by looking at your yard as a landscape designer does. Do you know where North is in your yard? Do you find that some plants thrive in the front yard but die in your back yard and you don’t know why? What does your yard look like in Google view? Print your house and lot from a bird’s eye view. Trace your roof, walkways, driveways and trees. See if you can identify what is growing in your landscape. Without proper planning, your landscape can be more work than it has to be and can actually take away from the beauty of your home and property. Come and join us to learn more about how your garden grows and why it looks the way it does. And please, as always, feel free to bring a friend or two! ANNUAL FALL PLANT SALE HGC’s Annual Fall Plant Sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2013, from 9:00 AM until 12 Noon in Hearthstone Park. Pansies, Dianthus,

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL

Leaders from all around Copper Creek Meadows got a chance to meet each other at an event on August 18th. Copper Creek Meadows includes the former Bear Creek, Bluebonnet Meadows and Copper Corners service units, so we cover a wide area up and down Hwy 6. We are all looking forward to the new year of Girl Scouting and it was a great chance to get acquainted and make some plans for the 2013-2014 year! To quote from the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website, “Girl Scout programs are adapted to meet the developmental, educational, emotional and social needs of girls at five age levels.” Girls may become Girl Scouts at any age level and no previous Scouting experience is required. • Girl Scout Daisies are in kindergarten and first grade (roughly ages 5-7). • Girl Scout Brownies are in grades 2nd-3rd (ages 7-9) • Girl Scout Juniors are in grades 4th-5th (ages 9-11) • Girl Scout Cadettes are in grades 6th-8th (ages 11-14) • Girl Scout Seniors are in grades 9th-10th (ages 14-16) • Girl Scout Ambassadors are in grades 11th-12th (ages 16-18) Girl Scouting in the United States began in 1912 and it is continually changing and evolving, while remaining true to its core values, the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girl Scouts are active girls! Girl Scouts in San Jacinto Council have opportunities for many outdoor activities (sailing, horseback riding, canoeing, archery and more) at our beautiful camps. We also explore nature in our own backyards and neighborhoods, work on service projects and learn new skills. Girl Scouts also share in the traditions of the worldwide Scouting movement. Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the following schools: Lieder, Metcalf, Tipps, Wilson and Texas Christian School, Birkes, Fiest, Lowery, Horne, Owens, Kirk, Hairgrove, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. And that isn’t all, we also serve the corresponding middle and high schools! Home school and private school students are always welcome! Rally Days (when we recruit new leaders and form new troops) will be scheduled soon, so be on the lookout for more information! Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available to older girls. Wider Opportunities, Council trips and special interest groups (backpacking, archery, Green Starlettes and more) are activities in which our Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors participate. There will be a special event for Cadettes and Seniors November 1st-3rd at Camp Casa Mare, “It’s Your Story, Tell It!” This will be a fun filled weekend exploring the Media and Mission Sisterhood Journeys. For more information or if you would like to be part of the Girl Planning Board for this event, please see the September/October issue of the Golden Link. You may also contact Liz Alton (LAlton@sjgs.org) or phone her at 712-292-0269. Girls in grades 6-12 who love learning about the stars, sun and moon are invited to join the Astronomy Interest Group, which meets at the Girl Scout Center (they also go camping!). Please contact Rosie Haffemann (rosiehaf@ windstream.net) for more information. Copper Creek Meadows will also be part of Region 4, with Cypress Bend and Wild Flowers neighborhoods. The larger group is planned to connect with existing interest groups and Council day and twilight camps and to identify and establish relationships with other programs. We know this is especially important to provide opportunities for our girls. Think these sound like fun? Give us a call - we’d love to talk to you! The Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website is www.sjgs.com or contact Dianne Massie (Dianne.massie@att.net), 281-550-9148.

We also need GIRL SCOUT ADULTS! These are women (and men!) aged 18 on up to serve as troop leaders and to help with special projects and activities. A background check and some training are required to get started; lots more training is available when you need it. You do not need to be Ranger Rick, Martha Stewart or Wonder Woman (though we would be happy to sign them up too!). Some of our volunteers don’t even have children! You do need to be interested in working with girls, helping them achieve their goals and having FUN!

On the 4th of July, several of our Scouts participated in the Southdown parade and one of our leaders acted as the flag bearer. The boys had a terrific time! We have many exciting events and outings planned for the upcoming year. If you are interested in joining Pack 1445, our Fall Rally Night will be September 10th in the Lowery Cafeteria at 7:00 PM. We look forward to seeing you there!

PACK 1296

Grant Pifer from Troop 1102 has set a goal to collect 8,500 pounds of dry Dog and Cat food to benefit the AniMeals on Wheels for his Eagle Scout Project. This program compliments the Seniors Meals on Wheel program supported by Interfaith Ministries. The collection date is Saturday, September 7th from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the Hunters Park Community Center in the Bear Creek Subdivision. If you would like to donate or miss the collection date, pickup can be arranged by texting 713-858-3001. Lowery Elementary cub scout Pack 1445 Â Cub Scout Pack 1445 is chartered by the Lowery PTO and has monthly Pack meetings at Lowery Elementary. Scouting is a great opportunity for boys to learn new skills and valuable lessons while spending time doing fun activities with their friends and family. The summer started off as an action-packed and adventurous time for the organization. At our Bridging Ceremony on June 2nd, we promoted Tiger Cubs to Wolves, Wolves to Bears and Bears to Webelos and wrapped up an extremely successful year for Pack 1445. Next, we had 12 Scouts attend the District Day Camp, earning numerous achievements towards their new rank and learning a variety of skills. The Scouts had a great time with activities like Archery and BB gun shooting,

Eagle scout Andrew Zarker, with Kleb Wood Nature Center Director, Mr. Fred Collins.

Boy Scout Troop 1296 Earns Scouting’s Most Prestigious Conservation Award: Troop 1296 Eagle scout candidate Andrew Zarker, planned the conservation project, in association with Kleb Wood Nature Center director Mr. Fred Collins. As part of his Eagle project, he led the effort to organise the Troop participation in the removal of the invasive tree species Chinese Tallow from an ephemeral wetland. This is a valued marsh habitat that would be lost without intervention. The clearance of the tallow trees involved the majority of the Troop membership, scouts and family members, who removed the unwanted trees prior to Spring migration and nesting time for the marsh inhabitants. This large scale conservation effort earned the Troop the Hornaday Unit Award. The BSA National Council describes the Hornaday Award as being “equivalent to an Olympic medal bestowed by the earth” and the awards program emphasis is designed to incorporate an awareness and understanding of conservation. Andrew designed a sign, which is to be erected near the marsh, to educate Nature Center visitors about the marsh habitat and the invasive species removal. If you are interested in joining Boy Scouts, please call Troop 1296 Committee Chair, Mr. David Covington, at 281-855-2239. Boy Scout Troop 1296 meets weekly on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM during the school year. Meetings include activities, skill sessions and planning for our monthly camp outs. Come join the fun!

BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY

Want to be happier and live a less stress-filled life? A Barna survey showed that people who participate in faith-based communities are more optimistic, less stressed and believe they are making a positive difference in the world. Yet, the number of Americans who identify as “unchurch” or “dechurched” has steadily increased over the past decade. With this in mind, September 15th has been designated as “National Back to Church Sunday.” Cornerstone United Methodist Church would like to extend a special invitation to come celebrate with them “Back to Church Sunday” on September 15th. The church is located at 18081 West Rd (across from the CFISD Berry Center). Special worship celebrations to “welcome back” those who once were active in a church, as well as those who have never been to a church have been planned for 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM and 10:45 AM. For more information about Cornerstone United Methodist Church, please visit our website at www.cornerstoneumc.org or call us at 281-859-4141.

GIDEON: YOUR WEAKNESS, GOD’S STRENGTH Do you feel overwhelmed? Intimidated? Insufficient? Inexperienced? Too old? Too young? Too invisible? or Too afraid? If you’ve ever struggled with insecurity or had trouble accepting your limitations, this study will help you see how God can use your weakness to unlock his strength in you. Join us as we discover God’s sufficiency in our lives. Join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM for this 7-week video study by Pricilla Shirer. Sessions will begin Tuesday, Sept. 3 - Oct. 15, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Aug 6th - 27th. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($13) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net. LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives?

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season.

‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam

Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX 77042), at 7 PM. Each of the upcoming concerts showcases the music of another transformative composer. The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February.

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families.

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.

September 2013

29

The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student.

Your Satisfaction is Our Future

The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

Tammala Baszile, international exchange coordinator for nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited for an exchange experience. To host, one adult in the household must be at least 25 years old. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Foundation for Foreign Study is the leader in high school exchange. Committed to promoting international understanding and global awareness for over 30 years, EF Foundation brings more students to the United States each year than any other high school exchange program. Since 1979, the organization has matched over 100,000 enthusiastic students from around the world with caring host families across the United States. EF Foundation is designated by the United States Department of State as an Exchange Program Sponsor.

STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.
