After necessities such as food, clothing and housing, there can be little left to put aside for future goals. Unfortunately, failing to save could mean the difference between enjoying a comfortable retirement and giving up some basic needs. Often it is a matter of making the decision to begin saving now in order to buy a new home or car later. The goals you set are important to you. Making changes to prepare for those goals can make a difference. • Don’t splurge with your tax refund. Instead of spending your refund, use it wisely by paying down debt, funding an individual retirement account or saving it for future financial goals. • Take full advantage of your employer’s retirement contributions. Your employer may match a percentage of the contributions you make to your retirement savings plan. It’s a good idea to do what it takes to get the matching limit. It’s free money that can really help your bottom line during retirement. • Start small and stay steady. The first word is the most important start. You should begin as early as possible to get the most out of your savings plan. • Pay yourself first. Think of your savings or investments as a bill you must pay on a regular basis, much the same as a car or mortgage payment. Be disciplined and make the payments according to a set schedule. For better results, establish an automatic monthly deduction from your paycheck or checking account to fund an investment or savings account. • Create separate pots of savings for upcoming life stages. Retirement may be an important goal for which to begin saving, but other goals or events need as much or more preparation. Don’t short-change other goals while concentrating on one thing. LABOR DAY SEPTEMBER 2ND

As the Industrial Revolution took hold of the nation, the average American in the late 1800s worked 12-hour days, seven days a week in order to make a basic living. Children were also working, as they provided cheap labor to employers and laws against child labor were not strongly enforced. With the long hours and terrible working conditions, American unions became more prominent and voiced their demands for a better way of life. On Tuesday, September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched from city hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the firstever Labor Day parade. Participants took an unpaid day-off to honor the workers of America, as well as vocalize issues they had with employers. As years passed, more states began to hold these parades, but Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later. On May 11, 1894, workers of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago struck to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives. They sought support from their union led by Eugene V. Debs and on June 26th the American Railroad Union called a boycott of all Pullman railway cars. Within days, 50,000 rail workers complied and railroad traffic out of Chicago came to a halt. On July 4th, President Grover Cleveland dispatched troops to Chicago. Much rioting and bloodshed ensued, but the governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actions broke the strike and the boycott soon collapsed. Debs and three other union officials were jailed for disobeying the injunction. The strike brought workerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rights to the public eye and Congress declared, in 1894, that the first Monday in September would be the holiday for workers, known as Labor Day. The founder of Labor Day remains unclear, but some credit either Peter McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, or Matthew Maguire, a secretary of the Central Labor Union, for proposing the holiday.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

Each year, from September 15th to October 15th, the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the economic, cultural and social contributions of the more than 44.3 million Latinos residing in the U.S. The dates of Hispanic Heritage Month were selected to include the Independence Day celebrations of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile and to incorporate October 12th, Día de la Raza, a holiday celebrated throughout Latin America to observe the colonization, exploration and multicultural heritage of the Americas. How to celebrate: • Visit a museum or gallery that has a Hispanic Heritage Monthrelated exhibit. You might learn about Hispanic artists, musicians or scientists who contributed to Hispanic culture around the world. • Go to your neighborhood bookstore or library to hear a lecture about Hispanic history. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about any one of the 21 countries represented by Hispanic society. • Attend a Hispanic dance performance or a Latin music concert. Take in the rhythm of the music or watch dancers move to the Latin beat. Or take dance lessons yourself, such as a salsa-dancing lesson. Ask ahead to find out whether or not you will need a partner for the class. • Watch a film in Spanish (with or without subtitles), see a play or musical related to a Hispanic tradition or see a performance put on by Hispanic Americans. If you don’t speak Spanish, learning a few words could open up a whole new world to you. • Volunteer for a Hispanic-related club such as a Mexican cooking club, Spanish literature group or Puerto Rican singles club. Begin writing for a publication written in Spanish or teach ESL. Whatever you choose, get involved in your community as a way to celebrate Hispanic heritage.

Harris County Commissioners Court voted unanimously this morning to give Harris County voters the opportunity to decide the fate of the Harris County Domed Stadium, the world-famous Astrodome, owned by county taxpayers. The court’s decision means voters will decide on November 5th whether to allow the county to issue up to $217 million in bonds to finance the redesign and redevelopment of the former stadium, which has remained empty and largely unused since 2009. The exact amount of bonds to be issued and the amount of the required property tax increase to pay off those bonds has not yet been determined, but would be part of the ballot language presented to voters. “One of the most frequent questions I have heard in my six and a half years as county judge has been ‘What are we going to do with the Astrodome’,” Emmett said. “Now the voters will finally get to decide.” After a lengthy multi-year process in which the county unsuccessfully sought private proposals with funding for the Astrodome, the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation unveiled a proposal in June called “The New Dome Experience.” The plan calls for converting the Astrodome to a modern multipurpose venue with open space that could play host to a multitude of sports, exhibitions and community events, including activities of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. If approved by voters in November, the repurposing of the Astrodome would take approximately 30 months, allowing it to play a key role in the hosting of Super Bowl LI in February 2017.

The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. SWEET WATERMELON ICE RECIPE

3 cups fresh watermelon juice 3 Tbsp sugar 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

Instructions Pour the watermelon juice into a shallow glass baking dish. Add the sugar and lemon juice and stir well. Place the dish in the freezer and chill. Remove the pan every 1/2 hour and stir. The juice will form light, grainy ice crystals as it freezes. Repeat this process until the juice is fully frozen, about 4 hours, depending on the temperature of your freezer. You can also use an ice cream maker, following the manufacturer’s directions. Serve immediately or store in the freezer in a covered container up to several weeks. This recipe makes a refreshing ice that is perfect for hot weather.

CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE ICE CREAM CAKE

INGREDIENTS: 1 (18 ounce) package small chocolate chip cookies (or Oreo cookies) 1/4 cup margarine, melted 1 cup hot fudge topping 2 quarts vanilla ice cream 1 cup whipped cream 12 cherries 1 additional cup of fudge topping (optional) Candy – crushed - such as Reese’s, Twix or use M&M’s (optional) DIRECTIONS: Crush half the cookies (about 20) to make crumbs. Combine crumbs with melted margarine and press into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan or pie plate. Stand remaining cookies around edge of pan. Spread 3/4 cup fudge topping over crust. (Microwave the fudge for a few seconds to make spreading easier.) Freeze 15 minutes. Meanwhile, soften 1 quart of ice cream in microwave or on countertop. After crust has chilled, spread softened ice cream over fudge layer. Freeze 30 minutes. Optional Layer – A second layer of fudge or crushed candies. Scoop remaining quart of ice cream into balls and arrange over spread ice cream layer. Freeze until firm, 4 hours or overnight. The Langham Creek Bailadora Officers attended the 2013 Crowd Pleasers Officer Camp June 14th -17th in downtown Houston. The officers took home the top honors of the camp taking 1st place overall, with over 45 teams in attendance. The officers won 1 of 5 awards given for Best Home Routine performing their 2013 - 2014 officer jazz contest routine “Devil’s Inside.” The officers were required to perform a Camp Routine, a Chosen Routine and a Choreography project all within three days and prepare the routines for competition within a 24 hour turn around. Great job ladies!

A background check and some training are required to get started; lots more training is available when you need it. BOY SCOUTS BOY SCOUT TROOP 61

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities. Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/ shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes to High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer. EAGLE SCOUT CANDIDATE SETS OUT TO SAVE LIVES:

The National Marrow Donor Program received the support of Eagle scout candidate Lucas Bargar in a recent bone marrow registry drive, located at Langham Creek YMCA. Organizing the training of Troop 1296 adults and scouts, Lucas co-ordinated with bone marrow registry “Be the Match” to advertise the program and sign up potential donors during this local registry drive. His hard work and enthusiasm paid off, with almost one hundred potential donors being identified during the course of the project, each having the potential to save a life!

PACK 1102 - PET FOOD COLLECTION

Grant Pifer from Troop 1102 has set a goal to collect 8,500 pounds of dry Dog and Cat food to benefit the AniMeals on Wheels for his Eagle Scout Project. This program compliments the Seniors Meals on Wheel program supported by Interfaith Ministries. The collection date is Saturday, September 7th from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the Hunters Park Community Center in the Bear Creek Subdivision. BOY SCOUT TROOP 1296 EARNS SCOUTING’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS CONSERVATION AWARD:

Troop 1296 Eagle scout candidate Andrew Zarker, planned the conservation project, in association with Kleb Wood Nature Center director Mr. Fred Collins. As part of his Eagle project, he led the effort to organise the Troop participation in the removal of the invasive tree species Chinese Tallow from an ephemeral wetland. This is a valued marsh habitat that would be lost without intervention. The clearance of the tallow trees involved the majority of the Troop membership, scouts and family members, who removed the unwanted trees prior to Spring migration and nesting time for the marsh inhabitants. This large scale conservation effort earned the Troop the Hornaday Unit Award. The BSA National Council describes the Hornaday Award as being “equivalent to an Olympic medal bestowed by the earth” and the awards program emphasis is designed to incorporate an awareness and understanding of conservation. Andrew designed a sign, which is to be erected near the marsh, to educate Nature Center visitors about the marsh habitat and the invasive species removal.

LOWERY ELEMENTARY CUB SCOUT PACK 1445

Cub Scout Pack 1445 is chartered by the Lowery PTO and has monthly Pack meetings at Lowery Elementary. Scouting is a great opportunity for boys to learn new skills and valuable lessons while spending time doing fun activities with their friends and family. The summer started off as an action-packed and adventurous time for the organization. At our Bridging Ceremony on June 2nd, we promoted Tiger Cubs to Wolves, Wolves to Bears and Bears to Webelos and wrapped up an extremely successful year for Pack 1445. Next, we had 12 Scouts attend the District Day Camp, earning numerous achievements towards their new rank and learning a variety of skills. The Scouts had a great time with activities like Archery and BB gun shooting, soccer and Ultimate Frisbee and working on craftsman activities including building a TV tray table. On the 4th of July, several of our Scouts participated in the Southdown parade and one of our leaders acted as the flag bearer. The boys had a terrific time! We have many exciting events and outings planned for the upcoming year. If you are interested in joining Pack 1445, our Fall Rally Night will be September 10th in the Lowery Cafeteria at 7:00 PM. THE LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND

The Lone Star Symphonic Band to launched its 21st Season in August. The group recently recorded a Christmas themed CD, which will be available for purchase at all concerts this season. The Band is based in west Houston, with rehearsals and concerts held at CrossPoint Community Church off of Westgreen Blvd. and I-10 (The Katy Freeway). Five concerts are slated for the Lone Star Symphonic Band’s 21st Season, with tickets for all concerts available on the Band’s website, www.lssband.org, for $5.50 each and will be available the day of the concert at the door for $10 each. All concerts begin at 4:00 PM and feature the Lone Star Dixieland Band for 30 minutes prior to the main performance in the foyer. On October 13, 2013, the Band will perform a concert titled “Life in Living Color.” All selections performed will feature life’s many colors. December 15, 2013 will be the Lone Star Symphonic Band’s Christmas and Hanukkah themed concert, titled “Celebrate the Season.” On March 2, 2014, the Band will perform “Lone Star,” a concert as big as Texas! The Lone Star Symphonic Band will perform on May 4, 2014, a spring-filled concert titled “Spring into Fun!” The annual patriotic concert, titled “We Hold These Truths,” will be held on June 29, 2014. The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college. ‘BEGINNING WITH BEETHOVEN’ TAKES HOLD OF HOUSTON

‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX 77042), at 7 PM. Each of the upcoming concerts showcases the music of another transformative composer. During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are

not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start.
