ANNUAL HOMEOWNERS MEETING
The annual Villages at Lakepointe Homeowners meeting is coming up. Please be looking for information via mail from FirstService Residential regarding specific dates. Come out and talk with your neighbors, meet the Board members and share your ideas! This year, due to low attendance rates, ballots and voting for available positions on the Board will be sent out a few weeks before the meeting. Please be looking for these items and call FirstService Residential with questions. More information is being posted on the VLP website as well.
FALL GARAGE SALE
Time to begin cleaning out those closets for the Fall Garage Sale! Villages at Lakepointe holds two garage sales per year. Since these are the only 2 times garage sales are allowed, be sure to have your items ready! This year the fall event will be held on Saturday, October 19th. More information can be found on the VLP website.
HALLOWEEN PARTY
The Halloween Party is once again scheduled for Thursday, October 31st. From 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, come out to enjoy a light dinner before sending the kids out to trick or treat. Last year we had a great turn out and everyone really enjoyed getting to see their neighbors and the kids in costumes.

DEED RESTRICTIONS
While we all love home improvements, please be sure to obtain approval prior to beginning. A complete list of the deed restrictions can be found on the website, as well as through FirstService Residential. Things such as landscaping, painting or staining, mailboxes and additions such as sheds are on the list. The architectural committee enforces deed restrictions at all times and is taken very seriously. Some simple things that help keep our neighborhood beautiful are: • Keeping your grass cut regularly, bushes trimmed and beds free of weeds • Keeping tree limbs trimmed high enough so that people walking do not get hurt and street signs can be easily seen • Replacing dead shrubbery- required along street facing fencing • Keeping fences stained with the approved colors** **Currently a specific item that will FirstService Residential will be looking for. Please note that FirstService Residential will be sending letters to residents that are non-compliant. These deed restrictions are mandatory, not a choice! By complying with the guidelines, we maintain a consistently beautiful neighborhood. Plus, it helps property values!
CARS PARKED IN STREET
We have received numerous complaints regarding the number of cars parked in the streets. It is a hazard when oncoming traffic is obstructed and cannot see people, pets and children trying to cross the street. In addition, it is illegal to park within a certain distance to the street corner. Officer Glentzer will be patrolling for vehicles parked too close to a corner or parked in the wrong direction. He will be issuing tickets to repeat offenders. Please avoid any future violations by using your garage and driveway to park your vehicles.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
Hurricane season is upon us. We should all be aware of some simple steps to be prepared should a hurricane head towards Houston or the surrounding areas. Lessons learned from “Ike” have been incorporated into the following tips from Waste Management. Be Prepared: • Have a copy of all important documents and numbers and back up your home computer; • Have a friend or family member that does not live in Houston be the contact for all family members should evacuation occur; • Keep a list of medications and doctor contact info with you; • Have a battery operated radio and extra batteries on hand; • If you have special needs, check with the city about registering for assistance in advance; • Plan for your pets, including medications and food; • Obtain enough food, water and medicine for 3 days, per person. Prepare Your Home: • Turn off or unplug electronics; • Turn off gas and water if needed; • Take food from the refrigerator with you; • Start using clean milk jugs to freeze water NOW - it keeps freezers cold if you lose power and also supplies fresh water; • Remove hanging baskets, umbrellas and all loose items from your yard so they don’t blow into windows; • Keep trees trimmed from your house and power lines at all times; • Put all trashcans and recycling bins in your garage; • Check the weather channel and listen to local instructions on what you should do. Helpful Web Sites: www.houstonredcross.org & www.ready.gov *This information was obtained from Waste Management’s Hurricane Preparedness Memo.

For example, one person wrote, “This foundation has given me a chance to fulfill my dreams of going to college.” While the Top-Rated Awards run through the end of October, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation was part of the inaugural group to qualify for the year. “Savvy donors want to see the impact of their donations more than ever,” said Perla Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofits, “People with direct experience with the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation have voted that the organization is making a real difference.” Being on the Top-Rated list gives donors and volunteers more confidence that this is a credible organization. The reviews by volunteers, clients and other donors show the on-the-ground results of this nonprofit. This award is a form of recognition by the community. Our Vision: The Foundation provides college financial support to capable and motivated CFISD student leaders with significant financial need. LOU'S PAINTING, Ltd.
COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL
Leaders from all around Copper Creek Meadows got a chance to meet each other at an event on August 18th. Copper Creek Meadows includes the former Bear Creek, Bluebonnet Meadows and Copper Corners service units, so we cover a wide area up and down Hwy 6. We are all looking forward to the new year of Girl Scouting and it was a great chance to get acquainted and make some plans for the 2013-2014 year! To quote from the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council website, “Girl Scout programs are adapted to meet the developmental, educational, emotional and social needs of girls at five age levels.” Girls may become Girl Scouts at any age level and no previous Scouting experience is required. • Girl Scout Daisies are in kindergarten and first grade (roughly ages 5-7). • Girl Scout Brownies are in grades 2nd-3rd (ages 7-9) • Girl Scout Juniors are in grades 4th-5th (ages 9-11) • Girl Scout Cadettes are in grades 6th-8th (ages 11-14) • Girl Scout Seniors are in grades 9th-10th (ages 14-16) • Girl Scout Ambassadors are in grades 11th-12th (ages 16-18) Girl Scouting in the United States began in 1912 and it is continually changing and evolving, while remaining true to its core values, the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girl Scouts are active girls! Girl Scouts in San Jacinto Council have opportunities for many outdoor activities (sailing, horseback riding, canoeing, archery and more) at our beautiful camps. We also explore nature in our own backyards and neighborhoods, work on service projects and learn new skills. Girl Scouts also share in the traditions of the worldwide Scouting movement. Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the following schools: Lieder, Metcalf, Tipps, Wilson and Texas Christian School, Birkes, Fiest, Lowery, Horne, Owens, Kirk, Hairgrove, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center Academy. And that isn’t all, we also serve the corresponding middle and high schools! Home school and private school students are always welcome!

Rally Days (when we recruit new leaders and form new troops) will be scheduled soon, so be on the lookout for more information! Don’t forget that many of our most exciting opportunities are available to older girls. Wider Opportunities, Council trips and special interest groups (backpacking, archery, Green Starlettes and more) are activities in which our Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors participate. There will be a special event for Cadettes and Seniors November 1st-3rd at Camp Casa Mare, “It’s Your Story, Tell It!” This will be a fun filled weekend exploring the Media and Mission Sisterhood Journeys. For more information or if you would like to be part of the Girl Planning Board for this event, please see the September/October issue of the Golden Link. You may also contact Liz Alton (LAlton@sjgs.org) or phone her at 712-292-0269. Girls in grades 6-12 who love learning about the stars, sun and moon are invited to join the Astronomy Interest Group, which meets at the Girl Scout Center (they also go camping!). Please contact Rosie Haffemann (rosiehaf@windstream.net) for more information. Copper Creek Meadows will also be part of Region 4, with Cypress Bend and Wild Flowers neighborhoods. The larger group is planned to connect with existing interest groups and Council day and twilight camps and to identify and establish relationships with other programs. We know this is especially important to provide opportunities for our girls. Think these sound like fun? Give us a call - we’d love to talk to you! MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!
CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. ‘BEGINNING WITH BEETHOVEN’ TAKES HOLD OF HOUSTON
‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX 77042), at 7 PM. Each of the upcoming concerts showcases the music of another transformative composer. The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February. To find out more, visit Houston New Arts Movement online at www. artsmove.net.

During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

EF FOUNDATION FOR FOREIGN STUDY HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Tammala Baszile, international exchange coordinator for nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited for an exchange experience. To host, one adult in the household must be at least 25 years old. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Foundation for Foreign Study is the leader in high school exchange. Committed to promoting international understanding and global awareness for over 30 years, EF Foundation brings more students to the United States each year than any other high school exchange program. Since 1979, the organization has matched over 100,000 enthusiastic students from around the world with caring host families across the United States. EF Foundation is designated by the United States Department of State as an Exchange Program Sponsor.

BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY
Want to be happier and live a less stress-filled life? A Barna survey showed that people who participate in faith-based communities are more optimistic, less stressed and believe they are making a positive difference in the world. Yet, the number of Americans who identify as “unchurch” or “dechurched” has steadily increased over the past decade. With this in mind, September 15th has been designated as “National Back to Church Sunday.” Cornerstone United Methodist Church would like to extend a special invitation to come celebrate with them “Back to Church Sunday” on September 15th. The church is located at 18081 West Rd (across from the CFISD Berry Center). Special worship celebrations to “welcome back” those who once were active in a church, as well as those who have never been to a church have been planned for 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM and 10:45 AM.

Ladies Bible Study on Jonah Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 - Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
