NEWS FROM THE RESIDENT HOA BOARD MEMBER Hi Westgaters! As fall approaches, we have several events in the works. First, we will be having a residents’ meeting on Thursday, September 26th, at 7 PM at the Lone Star CyFair College Library (9191 Barker Cypress Rd.), in the LRNC 215 meeting room. Please double-check times and date on Facebook, on NextDoor. com, on our website (www.westgatetx.com) and in an email from westgatehoa@yahoo.com. Normally, an HOA Board has meetings monthly, but since we don’t, this is a way for residents to voice issues, make suggestions and find out information. Among other items, we will be discussing how much to go down on next year’s maintenance fee. Hope to see you there! Second, David Vaughn and the Crime Watch Committee have been working hard to prepare a Texas National Night Out worthy of the national organization’s 30th anniversary. We’ll have hot dogs, free stuff, safety information and the results of our BBQ Contest that will take place the weekend before (with samples!). It’s a good time to come out, have some fun and meet your neighbors. This year’s event begins at 7 PM at the big park on Tuesday, October 1st. We will also be having a Halloween Party and contests at the big park on October 31st. Look for details in next month’s newsletter,
on Facebook, NextDoor.com and by email from westgateHOA@ yahoo.com. It should start around 6 PM, with the pizza and other goodies being first come, first served. Then we’ll have contest or other activities and the kids can trick or treat on the way home. It worked out really well over the last two years. Everyone had fun! For information or to volunteer to help: wgsocialcommittee@ yahoo.com. Other important issues: • We are adding trash cans to the main park, a couple of benches in the new park area that connects Westgate Park Dr. to section 14 and we are discussing places to add dog waste containers to discourage leaving pet waste behind while walking our pets. • Members of the pool committee and I have been meeting with Expressions Pools regarding issues at the pool. All pools have some issues, as the lifeguards are typically teenagers, but we’ve also had problems with the behavior of some residents, making it difficult to keep good lifeguards. We’re coming up with strategies for preventing the problems for next year. wgparkspools@gmail. com. Thank you so much for the wonderful job in maintaining your homes’ appearances. Homes have been selling well in Westgate, thanks to efforts of our residents and community. Sincerely, Kimberly McGaughy Westgate HOA Board Member

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
Every May, many of us take steps to prepare our families and our business for the seasonal threats posed by hurricanes and other inclement weather. If you live in a coastal county, (Harris County is classified as a coastal county) you are encouraged to prepare a basic emergency kit to provide essential needs when the risk posed by hurricanes threatens the availability of those needs. To begin your preparations, visit the link below or assemble your own kit with the following considerations: • What is your plan for surviving a severe weather event? Does it include meeting locations/alternate locations, insurance information, phone numbers and a basic needs kit for 3 days? • Where is your alternate shelter located pre, during and post evacuation? • Do you have enough water for each family member to hydrate regularly, wash clothes and dishes or meet your hygienic needs? • Do you able to provide food, fuel, fire for your family assuming no stores are open? • Do you have a first aid kit, with medications and are you properly trained to administer aid?

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT-PLAN FOR DISASTER
From FEMA: When disaster strikes, will your community know how to respond? Practicing the appropriate actions to take before a disaster strikes is vital for saving lives. Did you know 46 percent of individuals expect to rely a great deal on people in their neighborhood for assistance within the first 72 hours after a disaster? Research shows most people aren’t as prepared as they think for disasters. In a recent preparedness survey, 46 percent of the respondents did not have a home evacuation plan, 80 percent had not conducted home evacuation drills and 60 percent did not know their community’s evacuation route. One way to ensure a positive response is to organize preparedness drills and practice them regularly to include knowing the pertinent evacuation route in your community. Consider learning the appropriate actions to take in advance of the following hazards: Fire, Tornado and Earthquake. Remember, there is no substitute for running a live drill to practice your emergency plan. Join the National Preparedness Community to learn best practices and find resources on how to prepare your community.
PREPAREDNESS FOR YOUR PETS
Disasters come in varying forms and often without warning. Many have a disaster plan for the family but have we included our pets? Make sure your animals stay safe (www.ready.gov/familycommunications) and remain a loving part of your family by taking the steps below: • Get a Rescue Alert Sticker: The Rescue Alert Sticker (www.aspca. org/form/free-pet-safety-pack) will notify people that pets are inside your home. Place sticker in a visible spot for a rescue worker to see. Include the types and number of pets in the home, the name of your veterinarian and your veterinarian’s phone number. If you have evacuated, write “Evacuated” across the sticker. • Find a Place for your Pet: Never evacuate without your pets. Make sure you have a predetermined place you and your pets can go in the case of an evacuation because not all Red Cross Facilities allow pets.
4
• Pet Emergency Kit: Along with an emergency preparedness kit for your household, it is also a good idea to create one for your pets. Some items to include are: a pet first-aid kit, enough food and water to last 3-7 days and toys to keep your pet occupied. For more tips, go to: www.aspca.org/pet-care/disaster-preparedness/.
TOOLS YOU CAN USE
FEMA has released several new tools you can use for disaster preparedness. • The FEMA smartphone app has been updated with a new feature called Disaster Reporter available for Android users. The Disaster Reporter lets users share disaster-related information for events occurring within the United States, allowing citizens, first responders and others to view and contribute information on a publicly accessible map. • Don’t have the FEMA App? Download it for Android, iPhone or Blackberry today! Download the new FEMA mobile app to share and receive disaster information http://tinyurl.com/mzsjp5j. • The 2013 National Preparedness Month toolkit is also now available. It includes suggestions for events and tools and resources to support outreach efforts on a community level. Safe regards, David Vaughn, Crime Watch Chair Westgate Community
LOST PETS IN WESTGATE
We’ve had many reports of lost animals in Westgate on our Facebook page, several of which were found and returned home by residents. Others found animals, but not their owners. Please make sure your pet has tags with an address and contact number so they can be returned home quickly if lost. Many times collars come off or the pet escapes during a bath in the yard; to prepare for that, get your pet microchipped. If you find a lost pet, take them to a vet to see if they have a microchip. It’s been heartbreaking this summer to see all the lost pets that don’t find their homes. Shelters are especially busy during the July 4th period. Euthanasia happens too frequently. Don’t let that happen to your pet. Microchipping is easy and inexpensive, with great rewards and peace of mind.

WESTGATE’S NEW PET DIRECTORY
Thank you to A.J. Hutchinson for getting us started on a great new idea for Westgate - the Westgate Pet Directory on our Westgate Subdivision Facebook group page. In an effort to reunite lost pets with their owners, upload your pet’s photo. In the event your pet ever gets loose, they can be identified in this photo album and returned to you via the contact info you provide as a description or comment on the photo. Any group member can click on each photo to see that individual pet’s home contact info. For any Westgate group member that wants to add a picture to the directory, please follow these directions (Cannot be done from a phone): 1. Click on tab that says “photos” at the top of page next to the tab that reads events. 2. Select the album that says Westgate Pet Directory. 3. Select “add photo” in the top right hand corner and browse for the photo on your computer. 4. When you add the photo, you can add the contact info as a description or as a comment. Thanks everyone for helping with this and posting your pets we are hoping this helps with finding the homes when our loved ones get out on the loose. When looking for the info., click on an individual photo.
WHAT IS NEXTDOOR.COM?
Please note: Nextdoor Westgate is a private website created by you and your neighbors and supported by our company, Nextdoor, Inc. Learn more about Nextdoor, Inc. below. Nextdoor is the private social network for you, your neighbors and your community. It’s the easiest way for you and your neighbors to talk online and make all of your lives better in the real world. And it’s free. Thousands of neighborhoods are already using Nextdoor to build happier, safer places to call home. People are using Nextdoor to: • Quickly get the word out about a break-in • Organize a Neighborhood Watch Group • Track down a trustworthy babysitter • Find out who does the best paint job in town • Ask for help keeping an eye out for a lost dog • Find a new home for an outgrown bike • Finally call that nice man down the street by his first name
In an effort to educate our residents, each month we highlight some deed restriction or other item that needs improvement in Westgate: This month, because we’ve had so many loose dogs, we are highlighting the COUNTY LEASH LAW that can carry some stiff penalties. Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person, which could result in the person getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Also, your pet escaping your yard is a heartbreaking situation for your family and your pet. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law unless the animal is restrained properly. If you dog repeatedly escapes from your backyard, be responsible to your pet, your neighbors and yourself by taking steps to prevent it from happening. When dogs or cats are stray, the animal control officer has the discretion to: 1. impound the animal and/or 2. cite the custodian of the animal to appear in a justice of the peace court to answer charges of violation of these Regulations;
Nextdoor’s mission is to bring back a sense of community to the neighborhood, one of the most important communities in each of our lives.

New GreatNonprofits Award is Based on Positive Online Reviews The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation announced that it has been honored with a prestigious 2013 Top-Rated Award by GreatNonprofits, the leading provider of user reviews about nonprofit organizations. “We are excited to be named a Top-Rated 2013 Nonprofit,” says Marie Holmes, Executive Director, Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. We are proud of our accomplishments, we have awarded over 5 million dollars in student scholarships since inception. The Top-Rated Nonprofit award was based on the large number of positive reviews that the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation received - reviews written by volunteers, donors, trustees and scholarship recipients. People posted their personal experience with the nonprofit. For example, one person wrote, “This foundation has given me a chance to fulfill my dreams of going to college.” While the Top-Rated Awards run through the end of October, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation was part of the inaugural group to qualify for the year. “Savvy donors want to see the impact of their donations more than ever,” said Perla Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofits, “People with direct experience with the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation have voted that the organization is making a real difference.”

BOY SCOUT TROOP 1296 EARNS SCOUTING’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS CONSERVATION AWARD:
Troop 1296 Eagle scout candidate Andrew Zarker, planned the conservation project, in association with Kleb Wood Nature Center director Mr. Fred Collins. As part of his Eagle project, he led the effort to organise the Troop participation in the removal of the invasive tree species Chinese Tallow from an ephemeral wetland. This is a valued marsh habitat that would be lost without intervention. The clearance of the tallow trees involved the majority of the Troop membership, scouts and family members, who removed the unwanted trees prior to Spring migration and nesting time for the marsh inhabitants. This large scale conservation effort earned the Troop the Hornaday Unit Award. The BSA National Council describes the Hornaday Award as being “equivalent to an Olympic medal bestowed by the earth” and the awards program emphasis is designed to incorporate an awareness and understanding of conservation. Andrew designed a sign, which is to be erected near the marsh, to educate Nature Center visitors about the marsh habitat and the invasive species removal.

LOWERY ELEMENTARY CUB SCOUT PACK 1445
Cub Scout Pack 1445 is chartered by the Lowery PTO and has monthly Pack meetings at Lowery Elementary. Scouting is a great opportunity for boys to learn new skills and valuable lessons while spending time doing fun activities with their friends and family. The summer started off as an action-packed and adventurous time for the organization. At our Bridging Ceremony on June 2nd, we promoted Tiger Cubs to Wolves, Wolves to Bears and Bears to Webelos and wrapped up an extremely successful year for Pack 1445. Next, we had 12 Scouts attend the District Day Camp, earning numerous achievements towards their new rank and learning a variety of skills. The Scouts had a great time with activities like Archery and BB gun shooting, soccer and Ultimate Frisbee and working on craftsman activities including building a TV tray table. On the 4th of July, several of our Scouts participated in the Southdown parade and one of our leaders acted as the flag bearer. The boys had a terrific time! We have many exciting events and outings planned for the upcoming year. If you are interested in joining Pack 1445, our Fall Rally Night will be September 10th in the Lowery Cafeteria at 7:00 PM. We look forward to seeing you there!

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH
Millions of people have difficulty reading. That’s because, despite what many people think, literacy issues are not just relegated to children and young adults. To improve literacy in America, we must consider readers of all ages and backgrounds. Here are some tips to help you improve and encourage reading and literacy. Here’s How: 1. Read books every day and let people see you do it. You may be a role model (to your child, your niece or nephew or some other individual in your family or circle of acquaintances). 2. Get involved with your local library. Many libraries offer literacy programs, which encourage reading in your community. See what you can do to help. 3. Talk about reading. Ask questions about what the individuals in your life are reading.

CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. ‘BEGINNING WITH BEETHOVEN’ TAKES HOLD OF HOUSTON
‘Beginning with Beethoven,’ the premier of the Transformation Trilogy concert series produced by local arts ensemble the Houston New Arts Movement (HNAM), stunned a packed house as it came to life on the stage at Dowling Music. Some of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most ambitious works were resurrected including the incomparable “Ghost Trio,” performed by HNAM members Adam Vincent Clay, Cony Ruiz Tamez and Laura Cividino. “Throughout his compositions, Ludwig van Beethoven took the form that predated him and transformed it,” said HNAM founder and pianist Adam Vincent Clay. “He composed with more personal and emotional intensity in his music, the beginning of a major transformation of the history of music composition. With these concerts, we are taking the audience on a journey through a range of emotions. Beethoven’s musical style changed much as he did, moving through the structures of the classical and romantic era and ultimately the heavy dissonance of his later works, even foreshadowing the compositional language of the twentieth century.” ‘The Transformation Trilogy’ continues with an additional ‘Beginning with Beethoven’ performance sponsored by and held at St. Cyril of Alexandria Church (10503 Westheimer Rd. Houston, TX 77042), at 7 PM. Each of the upcoming concerts showcases the music of another transformative composer. The next in the series will reveal the powerful works of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) in November followed by the cutting and suspenseful compositions of Alfred Schnittke finishing the trilogy in February. HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK
During the 2013-2014 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are

not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY
Want to be happier and live a less stress-filled life? A Barna survey showed that people who participate in faith-based communities are more optimistic, less stressed and believe they are making a positive difference in the world. Yet, the number of Americans who identify as “unchurch” or “dechurched” has steadily increased over the past decade. With this in mind, September 15th has been designated as “National Back to Church Sunday.” Cornerstone United Methodist Church would like to extend a special invitation to come celebrate with them “Back to Church Sunday” on September 15th. The church is located at 18081 West Rd (across from the CFISD Berry Center). Special worship celebrations to “welcome back” those who once were active in a church, as well as those who have never been to a church have been planned for 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM and 10:45 AM. For more information about Cornerstone United Methodist Church, please visit our website at www.cornerstoneumc.org or call us at 281-859-4141.

Ladies Bible Study on Jonah Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration begins Sept. 24 - Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.
