We had a successful summer with our new pool company. We feel they did a much better job than the two prior companies. DAMAGE AROUND THE SUBDIVISION: As some of you may know, we have had several insurance claims this summer. First, high winds ripped our canopy at the pool. This was an $8,000 plus repair to the pool area. The second was the monument at the old entrance to the subdivision. An unidentified driver hit the granite entrance sign to the subdivision. We have their headlight, which looks like a Ford headlight. So if you know of someone that damaged the left side of their car back in June, please report it to our officers so they can investigate it. This claim was over $15,500 against our insurance, not counting our deductible. We are also moving the Monument to the main entrance of the subdivision on Creekbend Trail. Then, we had the car that drove through our fence at the pool and damaged one of the brick columns. This repair is approximately $5,000 out of our pocket, until the driver’s insurance pays for the claim. FALL UPDATE Because of the number of the claims and size of the claim, we are expecting another increase in our premium again this year. There have been several increases in operation expenses across the board for the last two years that keep cutting deeper into the budget of the association. There are also the unknown costs that we are predicting to increase in the next couple of years due to the economy. This has led us to a decision that we will have to raise the assessments by 10% for next year to protect the Association from unexpected expenses. We have several houses that need roof repairs. Please do your part to help keep our home values up. Houston ISD and Katy ISD have both stated they are not raising taxes, so it is a great time to protest your tax value and get ahead of the curve. And it’s inevitable that they will go up some time in the near future. Always be prepared and keep your alarm system activated. Criminals are always looking for opportunity. Install a motion sensor light and a cheap camera system for outside, if needed. Remember to call 911, not Board Members when you see criminal activity. Time is the key to stopping criminal behavior. If you live near an entrance, you need to take extra precautions. Criminals like to choose these homes because it is easy to get away after the crime.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

6 Granny Smith apples 6 wooden sticks 1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped 2 tablespoons water 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 cups chopped peanut butter filled sandwich cookies 4 ounces milk chocolate, chopped 4 ounces white chocolate, chopped DIRECTIONS Insert wooden sticks into the stem end of each apple. Place apples on a cookie sheet covered with lightly greased aluminum foil. Combine caramels and water in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring often, until caramel melts and is smooth. Stir in the vanilla. Dip each apple into the caramel and gently run apples around insides of saucepan to scrape off some of the caramel. Scrape excess caramel from the apple bottoms using the side of the saucepan.

Theater, Arts & Music THE LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND

The Lone Star Symphonic Band to launched its 21st Season in August. The group recently recorded a Christmas themed CD, which will be available for purchase at all concerts this season. The Band is based in west Houston, with rehearsals and concerts held at CrossPoint Community Church off of Westgreen Blvd. and I-10 (The Katy Freeway). Five concerts are slated for the Lone Star Symphonic Band’s 21st Season, with tickets for all concerts available on the Band’s website, www.lssband.org, for $5.50 each and will be available the day of the concert at the door for $10 each. All concerts begin at 4:00 PM and feature the Lone Star Dixieland Band for 30 minutes prior to the main performance in the foyer. On October 13, 2013, the Band will perform a concert titled “Life in Living Color.” All selections performed will feature life’s many colors. December 15, 2013 will be the Lone Star Symphonic Band’s Christmas and Hanukkah themed concert, titled “Celebrate the Season.” On March 2, 2014, the Band will perform “Lone Star,” a concert as big as Texas! The Lone Star Symphonic Band will perform on May 4, 2014, a spring-filled concert titled “Spring into Fun!” The annual patriotic concert, titled “We Hold These Truths,” will be held on June 29, 2014. The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college. The Band is under the direction of Mr. Bob Bryant.
