BOY SCOUT TROOP 987 WILL BE OFFERING A US FLAG ROUTE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD!
The Boy Scout Troop 987 is offering this service to your neighborhood as a service fundraiser. For $35, the scouts will place a 3’ x 5’ flag at your residence on the following national holidays (place approximately sunrise and take away approximately sundown): Presidents’ Day 2014, Memorial Day 2013, Flag Day 2013, Independence Day 2013, Labor Day 2013, Patriot Day 2013 and Veteran’s Day 2013. Monies raised through this project will support Scouts of Troop 987 in activities, such as attending summer camp, going on regular camping excursions and participating in other activities. This service fundraiser will also help our scouts build pride in their community while helping to earn their own way for scouting activities. If you have any questions, please contact John Angel at jangel@crstexas. com or call 713-429-2969. We also offer for a one-time fee of $75 to come and place flag for you and then leave the flag with you and you are responsible for putting out and taking down. CRIME REPORTING
Dear Governors Place Residents, we have seen an increase in activity that required sheriff attention. Together as a community we must always be alert for both ourselves and our neighbors. Please phone (713-221-6000) the sheriff for anything suspicious; robbery, suspicious looking people, speeding, etc. We have to crackdown on crime in our neighborhood.
MAINTAINING PROPERTY VALUES
One of the important purposes of a homeowner’s association is to enforce the terms of the Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions that are “attached to” our properties when we buy them. These documents provide for an Architectural Control Committee to approve changes or additions to the exteriors of our homes or lots. If you are planning to paint your house or replace your roof, contact Crest Management at 281-579-0761 and ask for an ACC form. Please fill out the form and return it for approval by the ACC Committee. While it may be an inconvenience, it is a means of cooperating with your neighbors, so that we all maintain the “curb appeal” that attracts buyers. This means more dollars when you want to sell your home. Another important part of the DCCR concerns the enforcement of deed restrictions. Governors Place does this by having Crest do two monthly inspections. If you receive a notice for a deed restriction violation, don’t feel insulted but please don’t ignore it. If you don’t understand it or think there is a mistake, call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 or send a written response. Most of the time, violations are corrected after one notice and no further action is required. Let’s all work together to help keep our community a nice place to live.
WASTE REMOVAL
Please remember not to place your garbage out any sooner than the night before the scheduled pick-up day.

After pick-up, all garbage cans should be kept out of public view. They should not be kept in front of garages, in the front yards of any home or on the side of any home. Please make every effort to conceal the trashcans from public view on non-trash days.
RECREATIONAL VEHICLES
Parking recreational vehicles in the community is a violation of the governing rules and regulations. We understand this is the time of year vacations and family visits are planned, so if you will take a moment to call Crest Management at 281-579-0761 to notify us as to when you will have your recreational vehicle(s) in the driveway, we will give you 1 to 2 days grace period. We understand people have to live, that is why we want to open the lines of communication. If we do not hear from you and your vehicle(s) are noticed on our regular inspection, don’t get upset when you receive a citation. Again, we will only allow parking of recreational vehicles for a short period of 1 to 2 days.

ASPCA HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR PETS & PET OWNERS
Halloween can be a traumatic and even dangerous time for your pet. Ms. Jacque Schultz, ASPCA Director of Companion Animal Services, offers some common-sense tips to protect your pet on Halloween: • Don’t leave your pet out in the yard on Halloween: There are plenty of stories of vicious pranksters who have teased, injured, stolen or even killed pets on this night. • Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets: Chocolate is poisonous to a lot of animals and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed. • Be careful of pets around a lit pumpkin: Pets may knock it over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned. • Don’t dress the dog in costume unless you know he loves it. Otherwise, it puts a lot of stress on the animal. • If you do dress up your dog, make sure the costume isn’t constricting, annoying or unsafe. Be careful not to obstruct their vision, even the

Teen and Adult Drivers: • Clear the driver’s view. Be sure that neither the driver’s costume nor anything else in the car obstructs the driver’s view. • Wear a seat belt. Be sure your passengers are wearing a safety belt, even if they have to take off part of their costume to attach it. • Drive slowly and defensively. Don’t assume that a pedestrian, especially an excited youngster in a costume, will move as you expect. Keep an eye out for trick-or-treaters darting out from parked cars. Homeowners: • Replace burned-out bulbs in exterior lights. Leave your exterior lights on later than usual - perhaps even all night. • Clear the pathway. Make sure the path to your door is well lighted and your lawn is clear of things that could be tripped over, such as jack-o’-lanterns with lit candles, ladders, garden hoses, flowerpots, bikes and animal leashes. • Sweep wet leaves from sidewalks and stairs. • Keep excitable pets away from the door. You’ll have a safer and calmer house if you keep Fido away from where you are dispensing the treats. • Put your car in the garage. Lock your garage doors.

Teens and Adolescents: • Travel in groups. Go only to the houses of people you know. Younger children should be accompanied by a responsible older person. • Carry flashlights. • Carry a mobile phone for quick communication. • Stay focused on your surroundings. If harassed or threatened, go into the closest store/restaurant and ask to use the phone. Call parents and/or police. Let the proprietors know that your group feels unsafe. • Be very cautious around jack-o’-lanterns with lit candles. Keep an eye out for flames and/or candles on porches. • Consider alternatives to trick-or-treating. Alternatives include house or school parties or volunteering at a haunted-house project.

sweetest dogs can get snappy when they can’t see what’s going on around them. • All but the most social dogs should be kept in a separate room during trick-or-treat visiting hours; too many strangers in strange garb can be scary for a dog. • Be careful your cat or dog doesn’t dart out through the open door. While this can be a fun time for people and pets alike, remember that your pets are depending on you to keep them safe from the more dangerous goblins and ghouls that this holiday brings.
FUN SCHOOL LUNCH IDEAS
Fill your child’s lunchbox with healthy and fun lunches they’ll actually eat! Cookie Cutter Sandwiches: Any sandwich cut with a large cookie cutter: star, heart, dinosaur, animals, etc. will become an irresistible treat! Pin Wheel Sandwiches: Spread your child’s favorite sandwich filling onto a tortilla, roll it up and slice it into smaller pieces. Our favorite fillings are - peanut butter and jelly, lunchmeat with cream cheese or cheese spread. Cheesy Stars: Use a small star cookie cutter to cut cheddar cheese pieces. In a separate bag, provide crackers or apple slices. You can also use the cookie cutter to cut bologna, ham or turkey. Bugs on Log: An old favorite with kids. Fill celery with cream cheese or peanut butter and top with raisins. An equally delicious alternative to peanut butter is cream cheese or Laughing Cow Cheese.

Smiley Face Fun: Spread peanut butter or cream cheese on a rice cake. Make a face using raisins or any dried fruit and a full head of hair with coconut flakes. This is a bit hard to pack for a lunch but a zip close plastic bag usually works pretty well. Cookie Dippers: Send vanilla wafer cookies along with a favorite yogurt. Kids love to dip and this way they are getting less sugar than most packaged treats. Fun Chips: Use large cookie cutters to cut a flour tortilla or wrap. Arrange on cookie sheet and toast in a 400 degree oven for 6 - 8 minutes. Send to school plain or with bean dip for dipping. Try brushing a very small amount of olive oil or cooking spray. Then sprinkle parmesan cheese or cinnamon sugar. If you try the cinnamon sugar, send the chips along with a container of applesauce for dipping. Kid’s love to dip? Pack string cheese and rolled meat slices with honey mustard dressing for dipping. I made it myself! I find that my children are more apt to eat a brown bag lunch they’ve helped to make. Whether it’s the cookies they baked with me or the sandwich they made in the morning. Packaging The retail world knows... enticing packaging sells. Especially when it comes to kids. Unfortunately, what’s inside is not always nutritious. Solve this dilemma by generating your own fun packaging. Before the school year begins, stock up on cheerfully colored re-usable containers, fun party napkins and stickers for plastic bags. A healthy lunch will be fun to eat! www.amazingmoms.com

KATY ISD BOARD CALLS FOR NOVEMBER BOND ELECTION
During the August Board work study meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees accepted a bond referendum recommendation by the Student Activity Facilities (SAF) Bond Committee and called for a Nov. 5th Bond election. It is projected that there will be no tax rate increase from the current rate of $.40 with the $99 million authorization. The authorization of the bond referendum by voters would fund the building of three new Student Activity Facilities: AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES CENTER - $25 MILLION The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on Katy-Hockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution.

Starring Cinco Ranch High School Choir Director David Lee and choreographed by Taylor Drill Team Coach Darby Boyd, the film features dancers and singers from all seven Katy ISD high schools and a cameo by Superintendent Alton Frailey. This cinematic call to action is a reminder that volunteering is fun and that every Katy ISD campus needs and welcomes volunteers. Last year’s volunteer video, “Call Us Maybe,” won the prestigious Crystal Award from the Texas Schools Public Relations Association.

SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO KATY FOR 2014
Katy ISD announced recently that the Southland Conference basketball tournament will return to the Merrell Center on March 12 - 15, 2014. The men’s and women’s basketball tournament brings more than 15,000 visitors to the Katy area each March and is responsible for approximately 2,000 nightly rooms in local hotels. “The Southland Conference is again very pleased to bring our marquee Basketball Tournament to Katy and the Merrell Center,” said Tom Burnett, commissioner of the Southland Conference. “We’ve had a successful run over the last six years in Katy and the seventh tournament at the Merrell Center should be even more exciting for the teams and fans!” The Conference provides an opportunity for Katy ISD students to participate in a variety of volunteer capacities such as ball boys/girls and student trainers.
