GRAND LAKES NEWS Oh boy. I’m not going to hide the truth - marathon training is a challenge. And I am only training for the half marathon. When I share this story with friends and family, the most common response I hear is, “I can never do that because I cannot run!” My response, “If I can do it, ANYONE can do it.” We sell ourselves short in challenging situations because we fear change and risk. When we take on a new challenge and the Happy results aren’t favorFall Y’all! able, we say we have failed. In my opinion, we have been successful. How? It is because we have tried. Let’s take my martial arts school for example. We have our own fight

team that competes in local boxing/MMA (light) competitions. We have won some competitions and we have lost others, too. Does this mean we have a win or loss record? Technically yes. But as a student, I see this as winning all around. In the words of former Houston Rockets’ coach, Rick Adelman, during a playoffs game vs. the Lakers: “It’s not about THEM losing, it’s about us WINNING.” Words of a champion. Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.

GRAND LAKES NEEDS CHAIRPERSONS!

We need chairpersons and co-chairs for the following committees: • Grand Lakes Woman’s Association • Grand Lakes Kids’ Playgroup These are very popular and important committee, which brings together your neighbors and friends. If you want to chair any of these groups, contact Sherita Jeter at PCMI (281-870-0585 or sjeter@stes.com).

YOUR HEALTH NOW! - ADD UMPF TO YOUR EXERCISE!

Are you bored with your current exercise routine? Feel like you’re not seeing results? Is the scale NOT moving? This means it’s time to JAZZ up your current exercise routine! It all begins with CHANGE: • Add variety to your exercise routine - this can be in the form of an exercise class, a new goal (training for a run) or even something fun like a Zumba class. • Active rest - between sets, instead of taking a 30-90 second break, add pushups, jumping jacks, mountain climbers or any form of “active” rest in between your sets. • Exercise with a partner with a higher endurance - they will make you work! • Wear something new - new threads make you feel more motivated.

• Update your playlist - your exercise music must be at a certain beat per minute; too fast means you’re not getting the full effect of your exercise; too slow and you’re not working hard enough. • Reward yourself with a recovery day!

YOUR HEALTH NOW! HEALTHIER HALLOWEEN CANDY! YES - you can have your Halloween candy and eat it, too! When you’re about to gobble you’re little goblin’s treats, here is a list of some healthier, lower fat, sodium and sugar options of this Hallmark holiday goodness: • Reese’s Peanut Butter cups or Snickers? Snickers • Skittles or peanut M & M’s? Peanut M & M’s • Twix or Kit Kat? KIT KAT • Tootsie Roll or Candy Corn? BOTH! Vegetarians choose Tootsie Roll, as Candy Corn has gelatin, which is an animal by product. • Butterfinger or York Peppermint Pattie? Butterfinger • Starburst or Jelly Rancher? Jelly Rancher • Smarties or Sweetarts? Smarties • Milky Way or Pay day? Milky Way • Almond Joy or Mounds? BOTH

Keep these helpful tips in mind while enjoying your spooktacular evening! TRICK-OR-TREATERS • Carry a flashlight. • Walk, don’t run and stay on sidewalks. • Obey traffic signals. • Stay in familiar neighborhoods and don’t cut across yards or driveways. • Make sure costumes don’t drag on the ground. • Avoid wearing masks while walking from house to house. • Wear clothing with reflective markings or tape. • Approach only houses that are lit. PARENTS • Make your child eat dinner before setting out. • Young children of any age should be accompanied by an adult. • If you buy a costume, look for one made of flame-retardant material. • You should know where your kids are going. • Tell children to bring the candy home to be inspected before consuming anything. • Look at the wrapping carefully and toss out anything that looks suspect. HOMEOWNERS • Make sure your yard is clear of things like hoses, dog leashes and flower pots that can trip the young ones. • Battery powered jack o lantern candles are preferable to a real flame. • If you do use candles, place the pumpkin well away from where trick-or-treaters will be walking or standing. • Make sure paper or cloth yard decorations won’t be blown into a flaming candle.

PET POOPS/YOU SCOOP

When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

KEEP YOUR PETS ON LEASHES

For the safety of all Grand Lakes residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you do come across a loose pet or a pet that may be lost, please try to take in the pet temporarily to your home if you can and immediately email the Grand Lakes Pets Lost and Found: grandlakes4pets@aol.com

STOP THAT BARKING!

Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electric-shock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

GRAND LAKES DOG PARK

Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET

1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet. Texas Lab Rescue has labs available that are waiting to go to their forever home. Please go to txlabrescue. org to check out their website.

SIX SIMPLE WAYS TO VALUE A STOCK

Investors are always searching for methods to help them determine whether a company is worth investing in. There are many means of stock valuation, some simple, some more complex. Why is stock valuation so important? If the market price of the company’s stock is greater than the company’s intrinsic value, an investor might choose to stay away. If the market price of the company’s stock is less than the company’s intrinsic value, the investor may choose to buy the stock. Here are six key valuation methods: Price-to-Earnings Ratio (P/E). The price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) is a valuation method used to compare a company’s current share price with its per-share earnings. Its formula is calculated by dividing its market value per share by its earnings per share. The P/E is one of the most widely used ratios and it is used to compare the financial performance of different companies, industries and markets. The company’s forecast P/E (its P/E for the upcoming year) is generally considered more important than its historical P/E. Price-to-Earnings Growth Ratio (PEG). The P/E ratio is a snapshot of where a company is and the PEG ratio is a graph plotting where it has been. The PEG ratio incorporates the historical growth rate of the company’s earnings. This ratio also tells you how your stock stacks up against another stock. The PEG ratio is calculated by taking the P/E ratio of a company and dividing it by the year-over-year growth rate of its earnings.

Price-to-Book Ratio (P/B). The price-to-book ratio measures a company’s market price in relation to its book value. Its formula is calculated by dividing the company’s stock by its book value per share. Book value can be found in the company’s balance sheet, usually listed as “stockholder equity.” It represents the value of a company’s total assets subtracted by its total liabilities. The P/B does not consider the actual value of the assets, only the nondepreciated portion of the assets. Like most ratios, it’s best to compare P/B ratios within industries. For example, tech stocks often trade above book value, while financial stocks often trade below book value. Price-to-Sales Ratio (P/S). The price-to-sales ratio helps determine a stock’s relative valuation. Its formula is calculated by dividing the company’s price per share by its annual net sales per share. Price-to-sales ratio is considered a relative valuation measure because it’s only useful when it’s compared with the P/S ratio of other firms. The P/S ratio varies dramatically by industry, so when comparing P/S ratios, make sure the firms are within the same industry. Return on Equity (ROE). The ROE is calculated by dividing a company’s earnings per share by its book values per share. The ROE is a measure of how well the company is utilizing its assets to make money. Understanding the trend of ROE is important because it indicates whether the company is improving its financial position or not. Dividend Payout Ratio. This ratio is calculated by dividing the dividends paid by a company by its earnings. The dividend payout ratio can also be calculated as dividends per share divided by earnings per share. A high dividend payout ratio indicates that the company is returning a large percentage of company profits back to the shareholders. A low dividend payout ratio indicates that the company is retaining most of its profits for internal growth.

BECKENDORFF 6TH GRADE SKATE MIXER

BDJH’s annual skate mixer is an event for all incoming 6th graders that will attend Beckendorff Jr. High during the current school year. It’s goal is to bring together students from the four feeder elementary schools, where they get to play games, skate and generally get to know each other. Spiritwear is always a popular table for students and parents to stop at.

It takes an army of dedicated volunteers for the Beckendorff Blast. Parents, Spartans Out Serving students and National Junior Honor Society students all give countless hours to ensure the success of the event.

BECKENDORFF BLAST

Beckendorff Jr. High hosted their Blast the week before school started. At the Blast, students and parents can pick up their schedules and school supplies, purchase spiritwear, sign up for PTA memberships and decorate and fill their lockers. “I love coming to the blast so I can see my friends and compare our schedules. It’s also fun to organize my locker for the school year!” stated one student.

Agricultural Sciences Center - $25 million The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on Katy-Hockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution. STEM Project Center - $4.5 million The STEM Project Center will provide additional classroom and project space for students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and activities. It will provide increased space for students to conduct large-scale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M. Center while students are viewing from their classroom. 14,000 Seat Stadium - $69.5 million A second stadium will address scheduling issues that will become increasingly difficult as future high schools are opened. Six Katy ISD high schools currently participate in varsity football, soccer and marching contests at Rhodes Stadium. With the opening of Tompkins High School, Katy ISD will schedule seven varsity football teams into Rhodes Stadium beginning in August of 2014. Scheduling seven schools in Rhodes Stadium will create a challenge for the District to comply with the U.I.L. 5-day rule. For more information about the Student Activity Facilities bond package, visit www.katyisd.org/facilities/ Pages/2013FacilitiesProposal.aspx.

KATY ISD’S PARTNERS IN EDUCATION DEBUTS “HEY VO!” If you’ve ever thought about being someone’s sweetheart, Katy ISD invites you to watch “Hey VO!” (http://vimeo. com/72830951) - the district’s new invitation to volunteers. Starring Cinco Ranch High School Choir Director David Lee and choreographed by Taylor Drill Team Coach Darby Boyd, the film features dancers and singers from all seven Katy ISD high schools and a cameo by Superintendent Alton Frailey. This cinematic call to action is a reminder that volunteering is fun and that every Katy ISD campus needs and welcomes volunteers. Last year’s volunteer video, “Call Us Maybe,” won the prestigious Crystal Award from the Texas Schools Public Relations Association.

Seven Lakes High School’s award winning Studio VII Theatre Company will present Twelve Angry Jurors, based on the Emmy award winning teleplay by Reginald Rose and adapted for the stage by Sherman Sergel, on October 10-12, 2013, in the SLHS Performing Arts Center (PAC). Go inside the Jury Room and witness first-hand the dilemma of 12 jurors as they decide the fate of a 19-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his father. What looks to be an open-andshut case unravels when Juror #8 is the sole holdout of the initial guilty vote. Tempers flare, arguments grow heated and they become “Twelve Angry Jurors.” Will they end up finding the defendant innocent or guilty? Will they sentence him to death? How will their personal biases and prejudices affect deliberations? Will “reasonable doubt” result in a “hung jury?” Don’t miss out on all the intense legal drama of Twelve Angry Jurors, presented by Studio VII Theatre Company, directed by Chocs Landgrebe, with Technical Direction by Joshua Heerssen. Performances will be held October 10th, 11th and 12th, at 7 pm, each day, with a 2 pm Matinee on October 12th. Presale Reserved General Admission Tickets go on sale the week of September 30th. Prices are $8 for Students, $10 for Adults and $5 for KISD Gold Card holders. PAC Box office hours are from 10 am-3 pm Monday through Friday. Advance Ticket reservations can also be made by calling the box office at 281237-2836. MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY

ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. Museum of Dysfunction IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. Rome by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 pm. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)

N

Oh Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. Psalms 34:3

20

We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping.

New walls are peeking up from behind construction fencing and dump trucks and cement trucks line up periodically as footings are dug and foundations are poured. A focus on children, youth and music motivated the congregation of St. Peter’s to raise $5.2 million to provide additional space for a children’s worship center, an expanded student center and a new rehearsal space for the church’s choirs and orchestra. Ground was broken for this building project on April 14th. In addition, the funds will allow for renovations to the sanctuary, nursery and welcome center. Construction is projected to be finished in early 2014. Dr. Pat Sparks joined St. Peter’s as the new senior pastor at the same time the construction was beginning. “On my first Sunday after I was appointed as St. Peter’s pastor, we had our groundbreaking service,” he said. “Now as I look outside of our office windows, the construction is really ramping up. It is exciting to see the walls on the new children’s worship building going up. I look forward to being a part of what God will be doing in the lives of the people who will worship, learn and play in these new facilities.” Mike Eastland, chairman of the Building Committee, said the building program will expand the vital children’s ministry area at St. Peter’s. “We will reach more children with our new children’s worship facility and the centrally located, enhanced nursery space will better serve families in both our contemporary and traditional services.” The new rehearsal space will allow the various choirs, ensembles and orchestra to assemble comfortably as they prepare for wor-

ship on Sunday mornings and also will provide storage areas for the musicians’ equipment. “The Music Department is grateful to the people of St. Peter’s who appreciate and support our music ministry,” said David Galasso, director of music ministries. “The financial support that will make this expansion possible is an expression of appreciation that inspires us to work even harder as we offer our musical gifts to God,” he said.

RUOK PROGRAM Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computergenerated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
