NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS

TO BEES OR NOT TO BEES! Earlier this year, Scott Murphy our DR Director, wrote an article for the newsletter regarding Africanized bees in our area. There have been recent newspaper articles on this subject and last night on the 10:00 PM news, there was a piece about a home in the Cypress area where the family dog was stung to death and a resident of the home was in the hospital after have been attacked by Africanized bees. Folks, this problem is for real and should not be taken lightly. I speak from experience in that I stupidly allowed a bee colony to exist in an electrical box in my backyard bed for a few years, as the bees seem to be of no harm. Than one day I was attacked and ended up with about six stings of which one was on my eyelid. It was not a pretty sight!! It cost me $400 to get them removed and of course what was initially a harmless colony of honey bees became Africanized and thus became aggressive. If you see bees colHappy onizing near your Fall Y’all! home, please take immediate steps to get a bee removal company out to remove them. If you see a neighboring home with bees, please inform that home-

owner. If the homeowner does nothing after a few weeks, call the Constables and report it. Harris County will levy fines against homeowners for endangerment to the neighborhood. This is a VERY SERIOUS matter. In fact, it can be a matter of life or death. Sadly, the media is not reporting that Africanize bees are indeed throughout the Houston area. We do not need to have a tragedy in NC due to Africanized bees. Yes, removal will cost some money, but better that than facing a tragic event. If you need to contact a beekeeper in the Katy area, please call Josh Green at 281-932-6163. I cannot personally vouch for this individual but I am told by another director that he does a very good job. FOLLOW UP ON POTENTIAL FEE INCREASE The Board received approximately 20 emails from NC homeowners in regard to the newsletter article about potentially increasing the annual HOA fees. I guess we have to assume the rest of the approximate 2,250 homeowners of NC do not care either way whether we increase fees or not!! Seriously, I know we are all busy and just do not take the time to do these sorts of things. We certainly appreciate those homeowners who did take the time to let us know their opinions. The vast majority of homeowners had favorable opinions regarding some type of increase. They stated the importance of keeping NC looking good and using appropriate means to control crime issues. We did have one homeowner who stated he felt the Constables served no purpose whatsoever and they were a waste of money and therefore, we could save about $261,000 by not renewing the contract. All of the other comments we received were complimentary of the Constables, although some stated they wished they were more visible in the community. Some of the homeowners expressed views of perhaps limiting the increase, rather than increasing it by $100 per year. The Board is taking all opinions into consideration, as we are approaching the budgeting stage for 2014. We intend to make a decision on this issue at perhaps the September or October meeting. It’s still not too late to express your views.

PARK RESERVATIONS AND USAGE We occasionally receive emails from homeowners who wish to reserve the pavilion at Rennie Park for special events. Please note that you will need to call SCS Management and speak to Nancy Callaway to make reservations. The number is 281-500-7132. Of course, please clean up the area and dispose of any litter when you are ready to leave. We recently replaced the slide that was maliciously broken by some knucklehead. It is very expensive to make repairs on the equipment. If we continue to see this kind of vandalism, the time will come when we will be forced to remove the equipment and that is something we do not wish to do. Please take care of the equipment and if you see someone abusing it, please contact our Constables. RENTALS I have noticed an increase in the number of homes with For Lease signs. This would seem to be unusual in that NC homes are selling for top dollar these days. If, however, you choose to lease your home, please be VERY careful in checking out prospective tenants. I am aware of three rental homes in NC whereby the homeowners experienced horrendous problems with the tenants. In two of those cases, the owners had to go to court to finally get the tenant evicted from the home. In all three situations, the homeowner is now looking at probably in excess of $15,000 just to get the home back to habitable conditions. Of course, all three of the homes were on the Deed Restriction Violation report for months. Occasionally, you may check the references of a prospective tenant and later find that person does not even live there but rather friends or relatives are the ones residing there. Bottom line is to be very careful to whom you rent your home. Would not hurt to occasionally visit the property to see who indeed is living there. If you use a real estate firm to lease the home, we suggest double checking the references. After all, it is your asset and not that of some real estate firm. Additionally, make CERTAIN the tenants are fully aware of our Deed Restrictions, otherwise, you will most likely receive a DR letter from us asking you to mow the yard, stop running a business out of the home, etc. We have many great tenants living in NC, but if you make a mistake and lease to the wrong kind of person, it can cost you major headaches and huge sums of dollars. NEW NCCIA DIRECTORS Two new directors were voted to the NCCIA Board at the August monthly meeting. Horace Davies was elected to serve the two-year term ending November, 2014. Mr. Davies and his wife recently moved to Nottingham Country in January of this year and reside on Kingsland Blvd. He is retired from the funeral services industry and has prior experience as a director of another homeowners association. Mr. Davies will be serving on the Environmental Control Committee. Andrew Cummins was elected to fill a vacant term, which will end November, 2013. Mr. Cummins and his family have resided in NC since 1998 and reside on Rustic Knolls. Mr. Cummins is in the acoustics business. He will serve as our DR Director for Sections 4, 7, 8 and 9.

HEAVY TRASH DAY SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19 TH From 8 AM until 2 PM, there will be heavy trash pickup in the Nottingham Elementary School (Kingsland and Rennie) back parking lot. This is our autumn pickup and another one will not be scheduled until next spring. This is for heavy trash items only and they will take almost EVERYTHING. There will be personnel on site to assist in unloading. Waste oil, paint, tires and other chemicals considered environmentally hazard will NOT be accepted. This is an excellent time to clean out the garage, etc. and have it hauled off for free. In driving around the subdivision and seeing some of the open garages and driveways, it would appear there are a number of homeowners that should seriously consider cleaning up their property and this would be an excellent time to do so. This is only for residents of Nottingham Country Sections 1 thru 9. For residents seeking to dispose of paint and other household chemicals, Harris County has a drop off facility at 6900 Hahn Rd., which is at Hwy 290 and N. Gessner. The phone number is 281-560-6200. SUMMER YARD OF THE SEASON - 2013 The Katy area was spared a serious drought this summer. There have been many HOT days though. It has been hard to keep our lawns and landscaping alive, let alone keep up with the manicuring or any new planting. Our real estate resale market has been exceptional. The mature landscaping and well-maintained yards are always a contribution to this success. On the other hand, poorly maintained yards quickly turn away potential buyers. Our landscaping crew, Custom Cutters, has done their best to keep up with mulch in the common areas where it is not practical to have shrubbery. The large oak roots and the shade they provide make it difficult to keep shrubbery alive. We also have an irrigation company that has responded as promptly as possible to any alerts of damaged sprinklers, etc. Please be sure to report any areas you notice not being maintained properly or if the sprinklers on any cul-de-sacs are not working. Any homeowner on a cul-de-sac or court may turn on the sprinkler system at any time. Please contact our Municipal Utility District if you notice an area not working or if you are not sure how to use the sprinkler system properly. October 4th - Early Dismissal October 14th - Student Holiday KATY ISD BOARD CALLS FOR NOVEMBER BOND ELECTION During the August Board work study meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees accepted a bond referendum recommendation by the Student Activity Facilities (SAF) Bond Committee and called for a Nov. 5th Bond election. It is projected that there will be no tax rate increase from the current rate of $.40 with the $99 million authorization. The authorization of the bond referendum by voters would fund the building of three new Student Activity Facilities: Agricultural Sciences Center - $25 million The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on Katy-Hockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution. STEM Project Center - $4.5 million The STEM Project Center will provide additional classroom and project space for students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and activities. It will provide increased space for students to conduct large-scale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M. Center while students are viewing from their classroom. 14,000 Seat Stadium - $69.5 million A second stadium will address scheduling issues that will become increasingly difficult as future high schools are opened. Six Katy ISD high schools currently participate in varsity football, soccer and marching contests at Rhodes Stadium. With the opening of Tompkins High School, Katy ISD will schedule seven varsity football teams into Rhodes Stadium beginning in August of 2014. Scheduling seven schools in Rhodes Stadium will create a challenge for the District to comply with the U.I.L. 5-day rule. The men’s and women’s basketball tournament brings more than 15,000 visitors to the Katy area each March and is responsible for approximately 2,000 nightly rooms in local hotels.

THEATER/ARTS SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL PRESENT TWELVE ANGRY JURORS Seven Lakes High School’s award winning Studio VII Theatre Company will present Twelve Angry Jurors, based on the Emmy award winning teleplay by Reginald Rose and adapted for the stage by Sherman Sergel, on October 10-12, 2013, in the SLHS Performing Arts Center (PAC). Go inside the Jury Room and witness first-hand the dilemma of 12 jurors as they decide the fate of a 19-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his father. What looks to be an open-and-shut case unravels when Juror #8 is the sole holdout of the initial guilty vote. Tempers flare, arguments grow heated and they become “Twelve Angry Jurors.” Will they end up finding the defendant innocent or guilty? Will they sentence him to death? How will their personal biases and prejudices affect deliberations? THE LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND The Lone Star Symphonic Band to launched its 21st Season in August. The group recently recorded a Christmas themed CD, which will be available for purchase at all concerts this season. The Band is based in west Houston, with rehearsals and concerts held at CrossPoint Community Church off of Westgreen Blvd. and I-10 (The Katy Freeway). Five concerts are slated for the Lone Star Symphonic Band’s 21st Season, with tickets for all concerts available on the Band’s website, www.lssband.org, for $5.50 each and will be available the day of the concert at the door for $10 each. All concerts begin at 4:00 PM and feature the Lone Star Dixieland Band for 30 minutes prior to the main performance in the foyer. On October 13, 2013, the Band will perform a concert titled “Life in Living Color.” All selections performed will feature life’s many colors. THE TEXAS MASTER NATURALISTS COASTAL PRAIRIE CHAPTER CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT The Texas Master Naturalist Coastal Prairie Chapter is please to host Bob Honig as the speaker for our monthly program. The topic for the October program is the “Christmas Bird Count” program. As an added bonus, Bob will also entertain any questions attendees may have with regard to butterfly counts. Bob is an environmental consultant who serves as a board member and volunteer for the Katy Prairie Conservancy. He is also a member of the Houston Audubon Society, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, The Wilderness Society, the Ornithology Group of the Outdoor Nature Club of Houston and other natural history organizations. He has a wealth of experience in leading field trips, presenting programs and performing bird surveys. This program will take place on Thursday, October 3rd, at 7 PM. The meeting will be preceded by a social at 6:30 PM and will be held at the Bud O’Shieles Community Center located at 1330 Band Road, Rosenberg, 77471.
