Trails HALLOWEEN SAFTEY TIPS
Teens and Adolescents: • Travel in groups. Go only to the houses of people you know. Younger children should be accompanied by a responsible older person. • Carry flashlights. • Carry a mobile phone for quick communication. • Stay focused on your surroundings. If harassed or threatened, go into the closest store/restaurant and ask to use the phone. Call parents and/or police. Let the proprietors know that your group feels unsafe. • Be very cautious around jack-o’-lanterns with lit candles. Keep an eye out for flames and/or candles on porches. • Consider alternatives to trick-or-treating. Alternatives include house or school parties or volunteering at a haunted-house project. Teen and Adult Drivers: • Clear the driver’s view. Be sure that neither the driver’s costume nor anything else in the car obstructs the driver’s view. • Wear a seat belt. Be sure your passengers are wearing a safety belt, even if they have to take off part of their costume to attach it. • Drive slowly and defensively. Don’t assume that a pedestrian, especially an excited youngster in a costume, will move as you expect. Keep an eye out for trick-or-treaters darting out from parked cars. Homeowners: • Replace burned-out bulbs in exterior lights. Leave your exterior lights on later than usual - perhaps even all night. • Clear the pathway. Make sure the path to your door is well lighted and your lawn is clear of things that could be tripped over, such as jack-o’-lanterns with lit candles, ladders, garden hoses, flowerpots, bikes and animal leashes. • Sweep wet leaves from sidewalks and stairs. • Keep excitable pets away from the door. You’ll have a safer and calmer house if you keep Fido away from where you are dispensing the treats. • Put your car in the garage. Lock your garage doors.

KATY ISD BOARD CALLS FOR NOVEMBER BOND ELECTION
During the August Board work study meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees accepted a bond referendum recommendation by the Student Activity Facilities (SAF) Bond Committee and called for a Nov. 5th Bond election. It is projected that there will be no tax rate increase from the current rate of $.40 with the $99 million authorization. The authorization of the bond referendum by voters would fund the building of three new Student Activity Facilities: AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES CENTER - $25 MILLION The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on Katy-Hockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution. STEM PROJECT CENTER - $4.5 MILLION The STEM Project Center will provide additional classroom and project space for students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and activities. It will provide increased space for students to conduct large-scale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M. Center while students are viewing from their classroom. 14,000 SEAT STADIUM - $69.5 MILLION A second stadium will address scheduling issues that will become increasingly difficult as future high schools are opened. KATY ISD’S PARTNERS IN EDUCATION DEBUTS “HEY VO!”
If you’ve ever thought about being someone’s sweetheart, Katy ISD invites you to watch “Hey VO!” (http://vimeo.com/72830951) - the district’s new invitation to volunteers. Starring Cinco Ranch High School Choir Director David Lee and choreographed by Taylor Drill Team Coach Darby Boyd, the film features dancers and singers from all seven Katy ISD high schools and a cameo by Superintendent Alton Frailey. This cinematic call to action is a reminder that volunteering is fun and that every Katy ISD campus needs and welcomes volunteers. Last year’s volunteer video, “Call Us Maybe,” won the prestigious Crystal Award from the Texas Schools Public Relations Association. During the 2012 - 2013 school year, more than 15,000 parent and community volunteers donated almost 782,000 hours to the children of Katy ISD. That’s the equivalent of 376 full-time staff members! For more information on the volunteer opportunities Katy ISD has to offer, visit www.katyisd.org. Partners in Education is the Katy ISD department that brings the community into the classroom.

PATRIOT DAY 5K – AMERICA’S RUN
Patriot Day 5K has a very simple mission - to educate people about Patriot Day. In 2002, Patriot Day was designated as a Day of Remembrance honoring those killed by the terrorist attacks of September 11th. There are still many people across the United States who do not know about Patriot Day and what it means. We would like to change that. Join us Saturday, September 28th, at Minute Maid Park (501 Crawford St., Houston, TX 77002) for this chip-timed, certified 5K course. Our goal is to honor the victims of 9/11 and raise awareness for Patriot Day and its meaning. We will also be raising money for our very worthy charity Partners: Voices of September 11th, 9/12 Generation, Wounded Warriors, Jeep’s S.A.F.E. Return, Cancer Schmancer and the Colon Cancer Alliance. You will also be Running to Win! Every registrant will automatically be entered into a drawing to win a brand new Jeep Patriot! Through our Patriot Day 5K runs held in multiple cities throughout the country each year, we will be bringing awareness to Patriot Day and its meaning. At the same time, we will be bringing communities together so that we can remember what it means to be an American, what it means to be patriotic, and what it feels like to want to make America better. We encourage you to come out and support our nation and honor the tragedies of September 11th. For more information and to register, please visit https://runsignup. com/Race/TX/Houston/PatriotDay5KHouston.

Theater/Fine Arts SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL PRESENT TWELVE ANGRY JURORS
Seven Lakes High School’s award winning Studio VII Theatre Company will present Twelve Angry Jurors, based on the Emmy award winning teleplay by Reginald Rose and adapted for the stage by Sherman Sergel, on October 10-12, 2013, in the SLHS Performing Arts Center (PAC). Go inside the Jury Room and witness first-hand the dilemma of 12 jurors as they decide the fate of a 19-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his father. What looks to be an open-and-shut case unravels when Juror #8 is the sole holdout of the initial guilty vote. Tempers flare, arguments grow heated and they become “Twelve Angry Jurors.” Will they end up finding the defendant innocent or guilty? Will they sentence him to death? How will their personal biases and prejudices affect deliberations? Will “reasonable doubt” result in a “hung jury?” Don’t miss out on all the intense legal drama of Twelve Angry Jurors, presented by Studio VII Theatre Company, directed by Chocs Landgrebe, with Technical Direction by Joshua Heerssen. Performances will be held October 10th, 11th and 12th, at 7 PM, each day, with a 2 PM Matinee on October 12th. Presale Reserved General Admission Tickets go on sale the week of September 30th. Prices are $8 for Students, $10 for Adults and $5 for KISD Gold Card holders. PAC Box office hours are from 10 AM-3 PM Monday through Friday. Advance Ticket reservations can also be made by calling the box office at 281-237-2836. Full Price Tickets are $10 for Students and $12 for Adults and will be sold at the door prior to each performance.

MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!
CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www.mildredsumbrella.com - info@ mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org. PS: We are starting rehearsal for this Christmas Show. You have time to prepare for it.
