If you’re interested in volunteering for any of the noted events or committees, contact Walonda Hollins at hollinsw@sbcglobal.net.

TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BURGLARY

It cannot be stated enough of the importance of minimizing our exposure to crime. The list below simply reminds us of things we should be mindful each day. 1. Make sure to close garage doors when at home and away. 2. Don’t keep garage door openers in the car, take them in the house with you; a garage door opener makes it easier for someone to enter your garage or house to remove personal property. 3. Keep car doors locked and take valuables either in your home or ensure the items are not in plain sight. 4. Keep all shrubs and plants at a level low enough that officers passing by or other residents can see if someone is lurking in those bushes! Shrubs should also be

trimmed high enough to show “feet” of someone hiding in them. 5. Have keys in hand before leaving the store, house or office avoiding standing by the car searching for them. 6. Don’t leave ladders on the side of the house or in the back yard. Ladders provide easy access to open second floor windows and no one will be able to see. 7. Make sure you close blinds when you are inside at night with the lights on, potential burglars can see right inside and know who is at home. 8. Use sensor lights outside the home. It deters criminals by “spot lighting” their efforts to enter your home. 9. Use double key locks: locks that require a key from the outside and from the inside. 10. Repair any broken areas of your fence reducing the access of potential burglars or mischievous kids. 11. When on vacation, let your neighbor(s) know so they can keep an eye out for suspicious activity. 12. When on vacation, keep yards mowed and trimmed, burglars spend a lot of time in a neighborhood looking for their next targets. Overgrown yards are a sure sign no one’s home.

RAINTREE VILLAGE RECYCLES

Our community participates in recycling through our trash services company. Yet, it’s been brought to our attention that not all residents are aware of this opportunity. Residents may contact Royal Disposal at 713-526-1536 to obtain a recycle bin. The following items may be placed in the recycle bin and placed for pickup on Fridays:

SATELLITE DISHES

It’s come to HOA’s attention that the installation of satellite dishes on some homes violates the deed restrictions. Satellites are expected to be installed out of sight of public view. The Association appreciates residents taking the time to ensure compliance.

RECREATION CARDS

Raintree Village residents will now be able to apply for a recreation card online at www.raintreevillage.com, through the community website. Our new application can be found in eforms. We will still accept mail and faxed applications which can be found in the documents section of our website.

TRASH PICKUP SERVICES

Royal Waste Management encourages residents to call in complaints regarding trash pickup. The crews are participating in a competition whereby the best crew receives a cash bonus at yearend. All complaints are taken seriously and posted internally for all crews to view. Additionally, the crew suffers deductions for each complaint. If you have a complaint regarding the trash service, contact Charles Gregory (Operations Manager) at 713-526-1536. Let’s be mindful that as residents, we must do our part by placing waste in trash bags. If you can’t lift the bag or trash receptacle it’s too full. You should consider breaking up your trash into more bags. We encourage you to remove all trash receptacles from curbside before you retire in the evenings. Additionally, the crew cannot pickup paint and other hazardous materials. You must take such items either to a Harris County or City of Houston hazardous waste dumpsite.

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable

of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. We want all of our streetlights to work. A lighted area is a safer area. If a streetlight is out in your area, please go to www.centerpointenergy. com and report it. Once on the website, click on “electricity” then” residential.” On the left side, you should click on “report a streetlight outage” to enter the required information. Each light pole should have a number on it. When reporting the out or malfunctioning light, give them the pole number, closest street address, contact information, an email address and the number of street lights you would like to report. • Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

KATY ISD BOARD CALLS FOR NOVEMBER BOND ELECTION

During the August Board work study meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees accepted a bond referendum recommendation by the Student Activity Facilities (SAF) Bond Committee and called for a Nov. 5th Bond election. It is projected that there will be no tax rate increase from the current rate of $.40 with the $99 million authorization. The authorization of the bond referendum by voters would fund the building of three new Student Activity Facilities: AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES CENTER - $25 MILLION The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on Katy-Hockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution. STEM PROJECT CENTER - $4.5 MILLION The STEM Project Center will provide additional classroom and project space for students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and activities. It will provide increased space for students to conduct large-scale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M. Center while students are viewing from their classroom. 14,000 SEAT STADIUM - $69.5 MILLION A second stadium will address scheduling issues that will become increasingly difficult as future high schools are opened. Six Katy

ISD high schools currently participate in varsity football, soccer and marching contests at Rhodes Stadium. With the opening of Tompkins High School, Katy ISD will schedule seven varsity football teams into Rhodes Stadium beginning in August of 2014. Scheduling seven schools in Rhodes Stadium will create a challenge for the District to comply with the U.I.L. 5-day rule. For more information about the Student Activity Facilities bond package, visit: www.katyisd.org/facilities/Pages/2013FacilitiesProposal.aspx.

KATY ISD’S PARTNERS IN EDUCATION DEBUTS “HEY VO!”

If you’ve ever thought about being someone’s sweetheart, Katy ISD invites you to watch “Hey VO!” (http://vimeo.com/72830951) - the district’s new invitation to volunteers. Starring Cinco Ranch High School Choir Director David Lee and choreographed by Taylor Drill Team Coach Darby Boyd, the film features dancers and singers from all seven Katy ISD high schools and a cameo by Superintendent Alton Frailey. This cinematic call to action is a reminder that volunteering is fun and that every Katy ISD campus needs and welcomes volunteers. Last year’s volunteer video, “Call Us Maybe,” won the prestigious Crystal Award from the Texas Schools Public Relations Association. During the 2012 - 2013 school year, more than 15,000 parent and community volunteers donated almost 782,000 hours to the children of Katy ISD. That’s the equivalent of 376 full-time staff members! For more information on the volunteer opportunities Katy ISD has to offer, visit www.katyisd.org. Partners in Education is the Katy ISD department that brings the community into the classroom.
