GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

INGREDIENTS 40 Caramel cubes 5 Apples 1 Tablespoon of water 5 Wooden sticks 1 Wax paper

DIRECTIONS Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Remove stems and Insert the wooden sticks into the stem hole until about half the stick is in the apple. INGREDIENTS 6 Granny Smith apples 6 wooden sticks 1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped 2 tablespoons water 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 cups chopped peanut butter filled sandwich cookies 4 ounces milk chocolate, chopped 4 ounces white chocolate, chopped

CHOCOLATE DIPPED APPLES

INGREDIENTS 10 small Granny Smith apples 1/2 cup chopped roasted peanuts 1/2 cup candy-coated milk chocolate candies 2 pounds semisweet chocolate, chopped

DIRECTIONS Insert wooden craft sticks or lollipop sticks into the cores of the apples at the stem. Place the roasted peanuts and candies on separate plates. Set aside.

Some will find themselves wearing the hat of a library helper or classroom reader. Others find that organizing a fundraiser or mentoring a student is the hat they wear best. Whatever volunteer hat you are wearing in our schools, one thing is certain; your day will be special. They give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of our students. October 1st - VIPS Language Arts/Reading Grades 2 - 5, 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, Berry Center. Techniques will be presented that CFISD parents and volunteers can use when they assist teachers and students working to improve reading and writing skills in grades 2 through 5. October 10th - PIE Mentor Training, 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, Berry Center. Training for individuals committed to serve as a role model and friend to CFISD students. An application and criminal background check is required. October 29th - VIPS Fall Conference, 8 AM to 2 PM, Berry Center. A day of informative workshops is offered to volunteers, staff, parents and community members designed to support the work of volunteers in all CFISD schools. Registration forms are available in schools and in the PIE dept. How to register for training: With the exception of Hearing and Vision State Certification, register for training by emailing the PIE office at vipsrsvp@cfisd.net. Please send a separate email for each training you wish to attend. Provide your name and the name and date of the training in each email. Well, the simplest way to describe a pet blessing is: A spiritual celebration to honor our loyal companions who love us unconditionally. This special ceremony is traditionally held in the fall around St. Francis of Assisi Day, October 4th. This ceremony is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. People are invited to bring their pets (fish, snakes, cats, dogs, hamsters, etc.) to receive a special blessing. These classes are FREE of charge and will be held every Sunday at 9:30 AM beginning September 1st and will continue through the end of December. God and Me - Grades 1st - 3rd: Youngsters in this group will learn of God’s love while cultivating a “best friends” relationship with Jesus. In each lesson, children will make a game that will be kept in a GAMEBox (God And Me Exploring BOX). These games will reinforce the Bible lessons and provide opportunities for families to explore God’s love together. God and Family - Grades 4th - 5th: This program is designed to help youth understand the importance of family and God’s role in a healthy family. Young people and their families will explore their faith together. These programs are officially recognized by the Boys Scouts of America, Camp Fire USA, Girls Scouts USA and American Heritage Girls as the religious awards program for youth. Awards will be given in February to Scouts and any other child who commits to and successfully completes the requirements of this program.
