GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.
ACC INFORMATION
As a reminder, all exterior changes or addition to your home MUST be applied for and approved by the Aberdeen Green Homeowners Association prior to performing. You can find the home improvement guidelines and application on the Association website at www. highsierramanagement.com.

“HATS OFF TO VOLUNTEERS” AT CY-FAIR ISD
“Whenever you wear your hat, your day will be special.” - Margo Nickel In Cy-Fair ISD, volunteers have the opportunity to wear lots of different hats. Some will find themselves wearing the hat of a library helper or classroom reader. Others find that organizing a fundraiser or mentoring a student is the hat they wear best. Whatever volunteer hat you are wearing in our schools, one thing is certain; your day will be special. Cy-Fair ISD volunteers center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. They give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of our students. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to be able to draw from a terrific diversity of skills and knowledge in its community. If you are interested in being a part of an exciting group of volunteers and making a difference in your Cy-Fair ISD Schools or would like more information, please feel free to contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at 281-894-3950.

Amaya Garage Doors Red: The heat and sun were just too much. So, I broke the chain and hit the road. I stopped at the office supply store and went on in, but nobody seemed very excited to see me. Thankfully, a kind lady was passing by and offered me a ride. My medical exam, shots and heartworm treatment are behind me now with no lasting damage and I am looking for my real forever family. Call me a love bug - I adore humans in all shapes and sizes. I roll over for tummy rubs and want to snuggle on the couch for movie night. Other dogs are ok, but I would rather have my people close by. Cats are very interesting and given my lineage, I do want to give chase. Things I love: long walks, rawhide chewies, and lots of hugs.

Congratulations to Cypress Christian senior defensive back, captain and four-year starter, Michael Boyd, who was honored by the Touchdown Club of Houston at their annual Preseason Team Banquet. The keynote speaker was Don Trull who was recently inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and played for the Houston Oilers in the 1960s. He challenged all the players to use their talents for more than just the game of football. The Cy-Christian Warriors have a full schedule through midNovember competing against area rivals for the district title. Armed with the talents and skills of returning players, newly discovered talent and additional coaches, the Warriors are mighty contenders this season. Be sure to catch the action. Warrior Football is streamed live on the internet each week via this link: CypressChristian.org/ Athletics/Game-Day.cfm. Homecoming is set for October 11, 2013, which includes a parade, tailgate party, the crowning of king and queen, the annual alumni picture and a great game against rival Bay Area Christian.

NOAH’S ARK WAS LONGER THAN THE CY-CHRISTIAN FOOTBALL FIELD
Kindergarten teachers are making the Bible come to life through fun and realistic activities. Students enjoyed learning about Noah and his faithfulness to God while on the Warrior football field. To get a better understanding of the size of the ark (which was 450 feet long and 75 feet wide), one class stood at each end of the football field, one class stood on the side and one class stood in the middle. They couldn’t believe that the ark was even longer than the football field! In addition, one of the kindergarten teachers released a helium balloon on a string that was 45 feet high to show the height of the ark. The children were able to see just how tall the ark really was! Noah definitely didn’t build it in one day. They marveled at God’s perfect plans and at His faithfulness to keep His promises.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Product sales give a girl the chance to learn goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. It also helps troops fund their activities and helps support our great camps and their varied programs. What else do Girl Scouts do? They help in their communities in many ways. They may make greeting cards for veterans, collect and shelve food at local food pantries, do face painting at a school carnival or organize a recycling campaign. There are many, many things to do as Girl Scouts and many different kinds of Girl Scouts to do them. Some of us act in plays; others build the scenery or make the costumes. Others may write the play or the music or set up a web page for the production. We are just starting to plan our calendar of events for the year, but we are looking forward to a good time!
FIREFLY TRAILS COMMUNITY NEWS
Firefly Trails Community kicked off the new Girl Scout year with a Community Gathering held on September 7th at Cy-Spring High School. Girl Scouts and their families enjoyed an evening of food, fun, music and dancing. On October 25th, we will be holding a birthday party in honor of our Founder, Juliette Gordon Low. That party will be fall festival themed and will include a service project benefiting patients at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus. In November, we will have a Skate Night for our members. Please check with your Troop Leader for additional information and to register for Community events. Awards Congratulations to Shayan Bathena, Nikki Demarchos and Halley Finkley from Troop 5548 for earning their Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts and includes the design and implementation of a project that benefits the community outside of Girl Scouts. Halley organized a team of volunteers to assist her with completing a project, which addressed nutritional health and mental wellness, while providing examples and exercises to keep seniors active and engaged. Halley is now attending UT where she is majoring in communication science disorders. Shayan held a reading clinic for the children’s day care and a book drive for the children’s library at The Star of Hope Shelter in Houston. Shayan is attending UT and is majoring in Biology. Nikki collected donations and made welcome bags and blankets for a local nursing home and hosted game/social afternoons at the nursing home. Nikki is now attending Texas A&M.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 1296
Owner Carolyn Novogradac 40+ years in the business
Eagle Scout candidate Conner Cole, with Boy Scout Troop 1296, presented Copeland Elementary, with six (6) large wooden display cabinets this summer. He planned and built, with assistance from Troop 1296 scouts and parents, these shadow box frames as part of his Eagle Project. The glass fronted, hinged picture frames, one per grade, will be utilized to display students work once mounted in the school main corridor. Conner chose his project to give back to the community and in particular the school where he was a former student.
In September, Cub Scout Pack 1445 held a successful Rally Night at Lowery Elementary, signing up a number of new scouts to join the pack and begin their journey. Rally Night is an opportunity for first through fifth graders to meet with Cub Scout leadership to learn about Scouting and the Pack. Additionally, the new scouts participated in Tiger Day to get a jumpstart on earning their first advancements. The Pack has an exciting October ahead of it with our first campout of the year planned and an outing to Scout Day at Schlitterbahn. Chances are you’ve heard the term “pet blessing,” but aren’t sure what it entails (no pun intended) or what the purpose is. Well, the simplest way to describe a pet blessing is: A spiritual celebration to honor our loyal companions who love us unconditionally. This special ceremony is traditionally held in the fall around St. Francis of Assisi Day, October 4th. This ceremony is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. St. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things: “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” Cornerstone UMC will be holding its “Blessing of the Pets” on Sunday, October 6th, at 4 PM. People are invited to bring their

CHRIST COVENANT CHURCH LADIES BIBLE STUDIES
Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts
