MESSAGE FROM YOUR HOA PRESIDENT
Happy October!
October is birthday month in my family including two born on Halloween. While Halloween can be a fun time for the kids, we need to be very careful when they are out trick-or-treating. Whether you are driving, handing out candy or walking around with children, please look out for the little ones and be safe, so we can all have a Happy Halloween. Our Veteran’s Day event will be a nice time to remember our vets. There are three veterans on the HOA Board, as well as many in our neighborhood. Veteran’s Day is November 11th, but November 10th is also a special day for some of our veterans, as it is the 238th birthday of my beloved Marine Corps. Please come out and celebrate our veterans. I appreciate all of you who are picking up your trash and recycling cans and only putting them out at 6:00 PM the night before pickup. Please keep up the good work. For those who do not, we will continue to issue deed violations. And remember, your trash cans have to be kept out of view of the street. I would also like to remind you that though the weather will be changing and our lawns will not be growing as quickly, we still need to keep up with lawn maintenance. Thank you. Take care and God Bless, Dennis R Brewer President, Cypress Mill HOA
VETERANS RECOGNITION SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH
In response to suggestions from homeowners and your HOA Board of Directors, Cypress Mill neighborhood would like to recognize the sacrifices of our military, both past and present. We would be honored if Veterans of all ages would come in full uniform, hat or just as you are, to the clubhouse for a group picture. Please also bring pictures of your unit or just yourself. A meal will be served to all the veterans and their families on Sunday, November 10th, 12-3 PM, so bring your family and join us at the clubhouse for the celebration of Veterans Day. This acknowledgement is not only for you, but also for all the youngsters who need a hero to look up to. Please reply by November 6th to Mike Crahan: mcrahan@pmghouston.com or 281-213-3184, and let us know how many will be attending. SIDEWALK TREES
by Larry Ramirez, HOA Vice President I wonder how many homeowners know that their property lines goes right down to the curb; it does not end at the sidewalk. The sidewalk and the nature strip between the sidewalk and the road is the homeowner’s responsibility. Many of the trees on this strip need to be trimmed to allow vehicles to pass and park without hitting the branches. There are also many trees with branches that hang over the sidewalk, causing residents to have to either walk on the road, duck to avoid the branches or walk on the homeowner’s lawn. Please take time to trim your trees and keep our neighborhood safe for both pedestrians and vehicles. Thank you Larry Ramirez Vice President, Cypress Mill HOA

TOYS FOR TOTS
A Toys for Tots drop box will be in the community center for the months of October, November and December. December 15th will be the last day to donate toys before pickup. Your coordinator for this project is Heather Fletcher, email: heatherfletcher1980@gmail.com, phone: 832-298-2772. Please contact Heather if you would like more information or to arrange pick-up for larger donations. Based on our location, the geographic area to be serviced is far Northwest Houston, Katy and Waller. The toys are gathered from all donation sites on December 15th and taken to the main Houston Toys for Tots warehouse off TOYS FOR TOTS LOGO 290 for packaging and distribution to children in need in the different areas. They will be officially distributed by Toys for Tots. Heather is personally volunteering and as a Board member in our local MOMS group, she is working with her chapter, (with the generous help of our HOA in allowing our rec. center to be used as a drop off site), in order to gather lots of toys for needy boys and girls.

October 2013
From the official Toys for Tots website: Toys for Tots is the Marine Corps’ premier community action program, one of the nation’s flagship charitable endeavors, an American tradition and a national treasure. For over half of a century, Marines have been the unchallenged leaders in looking after needy children at Christmas. The Toys for Tots message of hope for the future has motivated youngsters to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. Toys for Tots has earned the distinction as a program which plays an important role in helping youngsters emerge from a background of poverty to adulthood as assets to society. Toys for Tots not only benefits children, but also has a positive impact on communities, on businesses - large and small, on the Marine Corps and on the nation. Toys for Tots is one vehicle for addressing the issue of poverty among children. According to child psychologists, mentoring is the most effective means of making a positive impact on the development of children. However, today’s overtaxed mentoring projects are able to reach only a small percentage of the

millions of needy children. We must, therefore, pursue alternatives to build/ restore self-esteem among needy children and give them hope for the future. Moreover, since children imitate the actions of their elders, children should be exposed to positive role models. Americans from every walk of life can join the Toys for Tots team and be an active participant in the development of our children. The challenge: be a participator, not a spectator. Just do your part to assist in the development of today’s children so they will grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders for the future. You will be helping children, your community and your nation. Your action today will help produce leaders for tomorrow. Help us “make a difference.”

Yet again there has been an instance where two unattended dogs chased a homeowner while walking two leashed dogs around the Park II retention pond. The homeowner barely made it into their back gate before the two dogs were clawing and barking at the gate to their back yard. You may think that your own dog is friendly and harmless, but when left to run free in the neighborhood, YOU are breaking the law. Dogs must be kept on a leash when not on your own property. On this occasion, nobody was injured, but it could easily have ended very differently. There was also a Doberman Pincher running loose on Emerald Cypress causing a homeowner to make a hasty retreat back into their house.
Did you know you can view the Cypress Mill Messenger in color? Just go to www.krenekprinting.com, click on “newsletters,” click on “Hwy 6 area” and then click on “Cypress Mill.”
Please, if you have any idea who these dogs belong to, contact your Community Manager, Mike Crahan; m.crahan@pmghouston.com with the information.
Even though in the past, we in Cypress Mill HOA have been blessed with some caring and capable volunteers to do the jobs required, the time is now upon us when they, having done their share - and so much more - want to be and are entitled to be, relieved by a new crop of volunteers who will continue the fine traditions which have been established through the loving efforts these caring people: Bernadette Salvador, Charles (for letting his wife help so much) and Carolyn Hoffmann, Bradley and Danyale Reid, Jack and Susie Evans, Jacqui Williams, Gail Norris, Heather Fletcher, Shalise Law, the Easter Bunny, local firemen, Santa, Patti Parks and Dena Loughlin.

VOLUNTEERS ARE ESSENTIAL AND WE NEED NEW ONES NOW!
As you all may know, the HOA neighborhood activities do not run themselves and PMG staff can’t do it alone either. So none of the events/ activities will happen without an adequate number of resident volunteers: no resident volunteers, no events, it’s that simple and that harsh.

To express interest and confirm dates, please email patti.parks@sbcglobal.net or our manager, Mike, at m.crahan@pmghouston.com. We’ll be discussing these books at the upcoming meetings. CYPRESS MILL RETENTION POND WALKING PATHS
Now that the evenings are getting a little cooler, more residents and their families are taking advantage of the walking paths around our neighborhood. These are “walking paths,” not bicycle tracks. Please be respectful of this and do not ride teenage/adult bicycles on these paths.
HALLOWEEN TRICK OR TREAT SAFETY TIPS
• Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible. • Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. • Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. • Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat. • Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don’t run from house to house. • Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation. • Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. • Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.
Cypress Mill
• Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. • Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls. • Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers. • Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Don’t stop at dark houses. Never accept rides from strangers. • Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.
A-BEAUTIFUL POOLS
Cypress Mills residents had a great summer at the pools! The lifeguards loved working at your pools and enjoyed keeping the pools safe. Residents young and old, enjoyed the pool this summer and from our view swim team had a great turn out and successful summer. Our lifeguard staff is primarily stationed at the pool for safety, rule enforcement and customer service. The lifeguards clean the pools each morning, restrooms throughout the day and at the end and ensure the pool chemicals are balanced and safe for swimming. Pool water is tested every hour and issues or problems are reported and addressed immediately. Our lifeguard and management staff works closely with the Management Company and HOA to make your amenities as enjoyable as possible for the HOT TEXAS days! There should always be one lifeguard on stand watching patrons when people are in the water. Our second guard gets up when people are in another area of coverage or there are more than 25 people in the pool! Lifeguards are watching the entire zone, but particularly paying attention to high risk areas and swimmers. These areas and people include steps or stairs, slides, diving boards, young children, moms with several children and elderly. Also there are certain times of day that are considered high risk as well, such as swimming lessons/ group events, afternoon hours 1-3 PM when children tire easily and after hour parties To recognize swimmers in distress they are watching for the stages of drowning. Sometimes these stages can happen very quickly and without much sound. First the patients are surprised and confused by what

9
is happening! They are active at this point and this is what the lifeguards are trained to see to stop an incident from becoming life threatening. Normally, swimmers in distress are vertical or semi vertical and they are bobbing for air. A-Beautiful Pools, Inc. and Cypress Mill lifeguards are trained yearly in their skills and in-serviced on a regular basis, with one of our Cypress area in-services being right here! Cypress Mill lifeguards performed very well in the yearly Emergency Testing drill where they competed with area Cypress pools for recognition among the lifeguards for their top notch skills! Thank you for trusting A-Beautiful Pools, Inc. to keep the Cypress Mills pools safe, clean and fun! Heather Dominy Vice President, A-Beautiful Pools

There are still commercial notices being taped on mailboxes. This is not only illegal but unsightly, particularly when the paper becomes weathered and torn. Please show some respect to the neighborhood and keep it neat and clean. If you see unauthorized notices, take a minute when picking up your mail to remove them.
REMINDER ABOUT TRASH COLLECTION DAYS
Remember that there is NO trash collection, either regular or recycling, on public holidays: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day, New Year’s Day, Independence day, etc. Please do not leave trash at the curb expecting collection on those days. If you need clarification, contact Best Trash Services; http://best-trash.com. Trash will be picked up on the next regularly scheduled day: recycling and household trash on Mondays, household trash on Thursdays.
ATTENTION BLOCK CAPTAINS
Please take a moment to check the list of Block Captains at the beginning of the newsletter. If you notice any errors, please contact your new Block Captain Chairperson, Shalise Law: shaliselaw@gmail or Mike Crahan: m.crahan@pmghouston.com. Thank you.
• Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies.

ATTENTION PET OWNERS
As much as we love our pets and consider them part of the family, please be respectful of your neighbors and remember the following: • If your yard backs onto a retention pond, please do not throw feces (or other trash) over the fence. Often this lands on the walking path which is both an eyesore for walkers and hazardous, especially for small children. • Do not leave your dog(s) outside for extended periods if consistent barking

is likely to annoy your neighbors. If this is not corrected, you may get a visit from your local deputy. • Please restrain your dog from pounding against your neighbor’s fence. There have been several instances where dogs have broken through the fence into a neighbor’s yard. If your dog does break a picket, then replace it as soon as possible. • Limit the number of pets to the number as directed in your section bylaws. • Always carry a poop bag when walking your dog.
