Please make sure you are replacing the broken or missing boards on your fences, with all the recent heavy winds there are a lot of fences in need of maintenance. All trash cans and recycle bins need to be stored out of sight, not in front of your garage or beside your homes. Please put these away the evening of collection day. Harris County leash laws state that all pets are to be confined on a leash with no access to sidewalks or streets unless accompanied by owner(s). To report animals running loose, call Animal Control at 281-999-3191.

STAYING SAFE HOME AND NEIGHBORHOOD: Good locks, simple precautions, neighborhood alertness and common sense can help prevent most property crimes LOCKS, DOORS AND WINDOWS • Install good deadbolt locks in your doors and use them. (About half of burglars enter through unlocked doors and windows.) • Use double-key deadbolts and remove the key from the lock. • Make sure outside doors, including the one between your house and garage, are solid, 1 ¾-inch metal or wood and fit tightly in their frames. Hinges should be inside.

10 Minutes from the Energy Corridor

16100 Cairnway, Suite 285 • Secure sliding glass doors with locks or a rigid wooden dowel wedged in the track. • Lock double-hung windows by sliding a bolt or nail into a hole drilled at a downward angle through the top of each sash and into a frame. OUTSIDE • Trim back shrubbery that hides doors or windows. Cut back tree limbs that could help a thief climb to second story windows. • Make sure all porches, entrances and yards are well lighted. • Keep the neighborhood up. Dark alleys, littler and rundown areas attract crime. KEY SENSE • Do not hide house keys in mail boxes, planters or under doormats. • Do not put personal identification on key rings. • Leave only your ignition key with mechanics or parking attendants. • If you lose the keys to your home or move, change the locks immediately. ANSWERING THE DOOR • Install a peephole or viewer in all entry doors so you can see who is outside without opening the door. • Do not trust door chains; they can be easily broken. • Don’t open the door to anyone you don’t know. Insist that service personnel verify their identity before allowing them in. ANSWERING THE TELEPHONE • Don’t give any information to “wrong number” callers. • Check references of any person calling about a survey or credit check before offering information. • Hang up immediately on threatening or harassing calls. GOING AWAY? • Make your home appear occupied when you go out - leave lights on and the radio playing. • Keep your garage door closed and locked. • Use timing devices to turn inside lights on and off. • If you will be gone for several days, arrange to have the mail and papers stopped or picked up. Half of all home burglaries occur during the day when alert neighbors could spot and report the thieves. PERSONAL SAFETY: Knowing how to protect yourself-and joining with your neighbors to make your streets safer can reduce the opportunity for muggers, purse snatchers and other street criminals to strike.

3 BASIC RULES • Do stay alert. Keep your mind on your surroundings, who’s in front of you and who’s behind you. Don’t get distracted. • Do walk purposefully, stand tall and make quick eye contact with people around you. • Do trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, leave. WHEN WALKING • Plan the safest route. Choose well-lit busy streets and avoid passing vacant lots, alleys and construction sites. • Know your area-police and fire stations and what establishments are open late. • Make sure you know where your children are going when they go out. Show them safe places in the neighborhood. • Carry your purse close to your body. Carry your wallet inside your coat rather than in a rear trouser pocket. • Don’t flaunt expensive jewelry or flash cash. • Don’t overburden yourself with large packages or groceries that make it hard to react. • If you suspect you’re being followed on foot, cross the street and head for the nearest well lighted, populated area. • If you’re being following by someone in a car, change direction immediately and make a visible point of writing down the license number. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION • Try to use well-lighted and frequently used stops. • Try to sit near the driver or conductor. • Avoid sitting near exits. An attacker can reach in and grab a purse or jewelry as the bus or subway pulls away. • Be alert to who gets off the bus or subway with you. If you feel uncomfortable, walk directly to a place where there are other people. IN ELEVATORS • Look in the elevator before getting in. • Stand near the controls. • Get off if someone suspicious enters. If you’re worried about someone who is waiting for the elevator with you, pretend you forgot something and don’t get on. • If you’re attacked, hit the alarm and as many floor buttons as possible. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES • Choose routes you know well and that are well populated. • Know businesses that are open and the location of police and fire stations.

• Consider not wearing headphones - it’s safer to be alert and completely aware of your surroundings.

BE SAFE! SERVICE HEATER PROTECT HOME

WHAT IF YOU’RE ATTACKED? • Remain calm; try not to panic or show signs of anger or confusion. • If the attacker is only after your purse, wallet or valuables - don’t resist. • Make an effort to get an accurate description of your attacker: age, race, complexion, build, height, weight, type and color of clothing. • Call the police immediately, identifying yourself and your location.

SEXUAL ASSAULT One in four women in America is raped at some time in her life. Knowing the facts about rape can help you prevent it.

WHILE WALKING • Be alert to the people around you. • Stay in well-lighted areas as much as possible. • Walk confidently at a steady pace, facing traffic. • Walk close to the curb. Avoid doorways, bushes and alleys. • Don’t walk alone at night. Always avoid areas with few people. • Be careful when people stop you for directions. Reply from a distance and don’t get too close to the car. WHILE DRIVING • Keep your car in good condition and the gas tank at least half full. • Park in well-lighted areas and lock your doors, no matter how long you’ll be gone. • Check front and rear seats and floorboards before entering your car. • Drive with all doors locked and windows rolled up. Never pick up hitchhikers. • If your car breaks down, put the hood up, lock the doors and turn on the flashers. If someone stops to help, roll down the window slightly and ask them to call the police or a tow truck. • Avoid underground and enclosed parking garages if possible. • If you’re being followed, don’t drive home. Go instead to the nearest police station or an open service station or business where you can call the police. Don’t leave your car unless you are certain you can get inside safely. IF YOU’RE ATTACKED • Stay as calm as possible and evaluate your options and resources. • It may be more advisable to submit than to resist and risk sever injury or death. You will have to make this decision based on the

• Rape is an act of violence, not sexual passion. • In over half of reported rapes, the victims know their attackers and approximately one-third are attacked in their own homes. • Police believe that rapists tend to prey on women who look frightened, easily intimidated or who seem to be daydreaming. REDUCE THE RISK OF RAPE AT HOME • Make sure all windows and doors in your home lock securely and keep them locked whether you’re at home or away. • Install a peephole in the door and use it. • Verify the identity and legitimacy of any sales or service person before letting him in. • Never let a stranger into your home while you’re alone - no matter what the reason. • Never give the impression that you are home alone if strangers call or come to the door. • If you live alone, use only your initials and last name on mail boxes or directories. • If you live in an apartment, avoid being in the garage or laundry room by yourself, especially at night. • If you come home and find a door or window open or signs of forced entry, don’t go in. Call the police.

circumstances. But don’t resist if the attacker has a weapon. • Keep assessing the situation as it is happening. If one strategy doesn’t work, try another. Possible options include negotiating, stalling for time, distracting the assailant and fleeing to a safe place, verbal assertiveness, screaming and physical resistance. • You may be able to turn the attacker off with bizarre behavior such as throwing up, acting crazy or picking your nose. AFTER AN ASSAULT OR RAPE • Go to a safe place and call the police. The sooner you report the crime, the greater the chances your attacker will be caught. • Do not shower, bathe, douche or destroy any clothing you were wearing. Do not disturb any physical evidence. • Go to a hospital emergency room for medical care. • Call someone to be with you. You should not be alone. Harris County Municipal Utility District No. 105 is contracting to purchase drinking water from two nearby districts while MUD 105 builds new water treatment facilities for its system. Construction of the interconnect facilities with the other districts will be complete within two weeks. When the new water supplies are activated, there may be a temporary discoloration of water coming from the new sources. Also, water pressure may be lower while receiving water through the interconnect facilities. Water from other districts will meet Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) standards in all respects. To ensure adequate water in MUD 105 while new facilities are under construction, MUD 105 will employ Stage 1 Drought Response Measures to reduce water consumption. This means outdoor water use will be limited to Tuesdays and Saturdays for customers with even numbered addresses and Wednesdays and Sundays for customers with odd-numbered addresses. Watering of common areas such as esplanades, parks and sports fields will be limited to Mondays and Fridays. Outdoor water use will be prohibited between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM.

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives. The American Cancer Society recommends early detections. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. To find a facility in your area, please call: American Cancer Society • (800) 227-2345 National Cancer Institute • (800) 4-CANCER Or visit nbcam.org or www.cancer.org for more information.

“Whenever you wear your hat, your day will be special.” - Margo Nickel In Cy-Fair ISD, volunteers have the opportunity to wear lots of different hats. Some will find themselves wearing the hat of a library helper or classroom reader. Others find that organizing a fundraiser or mentoring a student is the hat they wear best. Whatever volunteer hat you are wearing in our schools, one thing is certain; your day will be special. Cy-Fair ISD volunteers center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. They give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of our students. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to be able to draw from a terrific diversity of skills and knowledge in its community. If you are interested in being a part of an exciting group of volunteers and making a difference in your Cy-Fair ISD Schools or would like more information, please feel free to contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at 281-894-3950.

CORNERSTONE UMC BLESSING OF THE PETS OCTOBER 6TH AT 4 PM

Chances are you’ve heard the term “pet blessing,” but aren’t sure what it entails (no pun intended) or what the purpose is. Well, the simplest way to describe a pet blessing is: A spiritual celebration to honor our loyal companions who love us unconditionally. This special ceremony is traditionally held in the fall around St. Francis of Assisi Day, October 4th. This ceremony is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. St. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things: “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” Cornerstone

UMC will be holding its “Blessing of the Pets” on Sunday, October 6th, at 4 PM. People are invited to bring their pets (fish, snakes, cats, dogs, hamsters, etc.) to receive a special blessing. We will gather in front of the worship center building and following a brief liturgy, Dr. Dave Meadows will bless each animal and their owner. If for some reason you are unable to bring your pet (the pet isn’t people or animal friendly, is easily frightened or not well), then simply bring a photo. Dogs should be on leashes. Cats and other pets should be in appropriate carriers. Please make sure your dog or cat has on a collar with a current ID. Please join us for this special celebration… the “Blessing of the Pets.” For more info., please call the church office at 281-859-4141. Cornerstone United Methodist Church is located at 18081 West Road (across from the CFISD Berry Center).

ST. CUTHBERT BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

St. Cuthbert is inviting all people and their pets to the Blessing of the Animals in celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on Saturday, October 12th, at 10:00 AM. This is a joyful and fun event,

recognizing and honoring the great bond and relationship between pets and their owners. Animals must be suitably restrained on a leash or in a cage. St. Cuthbert is located at 17020 West Road, Houston (the northeast corner of West and Queenston). Visit us at www.stcuthbert.org.

CROSSBRIDGE CHRISTIAN CHURCH FREE WEDDINGS

Crossbridge Christian Church offers Free Weddings on December 7th and December 14th. We have multiple times available on both days. The Bride and Groom must come together to schedule the date. Please see the website for more information, www. crossbridgehouston.org. THE STORY Dr. Kevin Pigg believes that The Story, a Zondervan best-seller, is the right tool to increase Biblical literacy, helping readers understand God’s story from Genesis to Revelation and how their own stories intersect with God’s. Consisting of 31 chapters of carefully-selected scriptures sequenced in chronological order, The Story presents the word of God in an engaging format, reading like a novel. The Story Church Campaign is a unique program providing up to 31 weeks of curriculum for children, teen and adult Sunday school and up to 31 weeks of corresponding sermons. When accompanied by reading through the five age-related books (The Story, The Story: Teen Edition, The Story for Kids, The Story for Children and The Story for Little Ones), the entire church can be literally on the same page for 31 weeks. Crossbridge Christian Church began the experience on September 22nd.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
