LOST & FOUND PETS IN HEARTHSTONE
Folks in Hearthstone are very helpful in getting lost pets reunited with their owners, but all dog owners should ensure that there is a tag on each dog with their name, address and phone number. Local pet stores have machines that make tags like this while you wait. At least that would help found dogs get back home quicker and with less trauma. Nevertheless, if you lose or find a pet, the email list on the website has been very helpful in reuniting dogs and their families.
WEBSITE
Please visit the Association’s website. With a more attractive, easy to use design, the site contains a lot of useful information, including HOA news, quick reference numbers, free classifieds and a library of association forms and documents. If you think of anything you would like added, please let us know. The only thing that has not changed is the address. It is still at www.hearthstonehoa.org.
HEARTHSTONE HOA EMAIL ALERTS
The email alerts group has migrated to the new, improved website. You no longer need to send an email to the management company. Just register at the site using “Join our Mailing Lists” on the opening page. You will be automatically added to the email group. This group will be used to quickly but sparingly, get information out to members between newsletters. If you would like these messages sent to more than one email address, just register again with each address you want included in the group. The addresses will not be sold, distributed or used for any purpose other than association business. Your address will not even be shared among group members. Messages sent to the group will be limited to those authorized by the HOA Board of Directors. If you have already joined the email group, you do not need to do so again. HEARTHSTONE GARDEN CLUB FEATURES “REJOICING WITH HOLIDAY DECORATING”
The Hearthstone Garden Club is excited to host the fascinating Sally Johnson as speaker at our next meeting on Tuesday, October 15th. Ms. Johnson will show us how to create table arrangements and wreaths for the upcoming holiday season with a focus on incorporating natural elements into these projects. Sally Johnson trained at the International School of Floral Design in California in 1971. In 1972 she opened her first of many successful Flower Shops in Kansas, working in both fresh and silk flower arrangements for weddings, funerals and all other occasions. When her husband was diagnosed with cancer, she moved to Houston to be near MD Anderson and her daughter. She and her daughter opened a shop called Gathered Treasures, located on Hwy 529 and kept it running until her husband died in 2005. Now Sally designs wreaths, wall and table arrangements in her home in Copperfield. When you walk into her flower-filled home, you know that she is a joyous and talented lady.

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better.

16100 Cairnway, Suite 285 • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

and gold brackets at area tournaments, have earned multiple player awards and have earned a place as leaders in their district. Head Coach Rebecca Campbell commented, “Improvement, consistency and a strong mental game are our focus this year and the girls are succeeding in accomplishing those goals.” Go, Lady Warriors! NOAH’S ARK WAS LONGER THAN THE CY-CHRISTIAN FOOTBALL FIELD Kindergarten teachers are making the Bible come to life through fun and realistic activities. Students enjoyed learning about Noah and his faithfulness to God while on the Warrior football field. To get a better understanding of the size of the ark (which was 450 feet long and 75 feet wide), one class stood at each end of the football field, one class stood on the side and one class stood in the middle. They couldn’t believe that the ark was even longer than the football field! In addition, one of the kindergarten teachers released a helium balloon on a string that was 45 feet high to show the height of the ark.
8
The children were able to see just how tall the ark really was! Noah definitely didn’t build it in one day. They marveled at God’s perfect plans and at His faithfulness to keep His promises.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER Cy-Falls High School Red: The heat and sun were just too much. So, I broke the chain and hit the road. I stopped at the office supply store and went on in, but nobody seemed very excited to see me. Thankfully, a kind lady was passing by and offered me a ride. My medical exam, shots and heartworm treatment are behind me now with no lasting damage and I am looking for my real forever family. Call me a love bug - I adore humans in all shapes and sizes. I roll over for tummy rubs and want to snuggle on the couch for movie night. Other dogs are ok, but I would rather have my people close by. Cats are very interesting and given my lineage, I do want to give chase. Things I love: long walks, rawhide chewies, and lots of hugs.
Marshall: I was picked up as a stray in the country and ended up at a big, noisy shelter. It was scary, since I am a little guy and don’t make a fuss. The rescue group gave me a ride out and my new life is ready to begin! I weigh about 12 lbs., have all the best breeds in my genes (too many to list here) and just love people. I like other dogs, but give me a lap and some snuggle time and I will be one happy boy! I am young, about 1 - 2 years, so I have many years and many adventures ahead of me. Let’s meet and greet. You won’t regret it!
Pebbles is a sweet, gentle girl who has beautiful soft, silky fur. She loves for you to pet her. Pebbles prefers to be the only cat in the house. She gets along fine with children and dogs. Pebbles is an affectionate cat who likes to sleep at the foot of your bed. She is approximately 2 years old.
Faith, born 11/2011, is is a beautiful black and white cat. Faith was bottle feed by one of our fosters from the time she was a tiny kitten. She is very used to people and is a playful, happy cat. Faith likes to run around and bat cat toys and chase her brother and sister. Faith is looking for a forever home. She gets along with other cats and dogs too.

DANE ANDERSON ★ 832-452-3029 CYPRESS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR NEWS
Welcome back fellow music lovers! A new school year is in full swing and joyful sounds fill the air! Our Ice cream social September 5th was a great success as massive amounts of frozen dairy treats were created and consumed. The freshmen were paired up with their big sib and new friendships began. Laughter filled the commons as interactive gaming went on with an extra scoop of silliness! Thank you to the booster club for supplying the treats and serving for this wonderful bonding experience. Our pizza/cookie dough/candy fundraiser is under way. If you missed out, we will have more ways to support us in the future! Thank you to all that did support us as these funds help in all the activities and extra items needed that often come into play for performances, travel and the favored Spring Trip!!! October 29th will see the commons transformed into a dinner theatre straight from Italy. A big thank you to Terri McCormick for heading up this event. This major fundraising for our choir. There will be a silent auction and we would love to represent your business or service. We are accepting any and all donations for baskets or items of interest to be bid upon. Please contact Mary Peck (281-550-5893 or mary-peck@att.net) for questions. In addition, our fabulous choirs will perform selected songs especially for our evening of dining and listening pleasure.
Start here. Transfer anywhere. That’s why 90,000 students choose us.
LSC-CyFair offers affordable and flexible options:

What else do Girl Scouts do? They help in their communities in many ways. They may make greeting cards for veterans, collect and shelve food at local food pantries, do face painting at a school carnival or organize a recycling campaign. There are many, many things to do as Girl Scouts and many different kinds of Girl Scouts to do them. Some of us act in plays; others build the scenery or make the costumes. Others may write the play or the music or set up a web page for the production. We are just starting to plan our calendar of events for the year, but we are looking forward to a good time!
Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities.

Church Events CORNERSTONE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH BLESSING OF THE PETS OCTOBER 6TH AT 4 PM
Chances are you’ve heard the term “pet blessing,” but aren’t sure what it entails (no pun intended) or what the purpose is. Well, the simplest way to describe a pet blessing is: A spiritual celebration to honor our loyal companions who love us unconditionally. This special ceremony is traditionally held in the fall around St. Francis of Assisi Day, October 4th. This ceremony is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. St. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things: “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.”

Cornerstone United Methodist church invites all young people entering grades 1st through 5th to join us for the P.R.A.Y program. These classes are FREE of charge and will be held every Sunday at 9:30 AM beginning September 1st and will continue through the end of December. God and Me - Grades 1st - 3rd: Youngsters in this group will learn of God’s love while cultivating a “best friends” relationship with Jesus. In each lesson, children will make a game that will be kept in a GAMEBox (God And Me Exploring BOX). These games will reinforce the Bible lessons and provide opportunities for families to explore God’s love together. God and Family - Grades 4th - 5th: This program is designed to help youth understand the importance of family and God’s role in a healthy family. Young people and their families will explore their faith together. These programs are officially recognized by the Boys Scouts of America, Camp Fire USA, Girls Scouts USA and American Heritage Girls as the religious awards program for youth. Awards will be given in February to Scouts and any other child who commits to and successfully completes the requirements of this program. Since regular attendance is mandatory, makeup dates have been included in the schedule in case of absence. If you have any questions and/or would like to sign your child up for this fourmonth program, please contact Erica Knight at family@cornerstoneumc. org. Bible Studies CHRIST COVENANT CHURCH LADIES BIBLE STUDIES LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH
Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration goes through Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.

LOCAL MENTORS NEEDED TO MENTOR ONE CHILD & CHANGE TWO LIVES!

It is the only organization that makes it simple for volunteers to experience the immediate benefits of their involvement and the impact of success on the young people in the community. Junior Achievement is always recruiting new volunteers, for only with the support of schools, parents and community is it possible to bring these extraordinary programs to the students. Contact the Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas office today, 713-682-4500, to find out about opportunities near you. CROSSROADS is a nonprofit United Way agency that provides mentors for at risk youth between the ages of 10 and 17. Visit our website at www. crossroads-volunteers.org and consider running an ad like the one below in your Copperfield subdivision newsletter. Many young people don’t have strong positive adult influences in their lives to help guide them through these crucial years. Mentoring makes a difference in both the life of the youth and our community. A commitment of 1 hour weekly is all we ask. Help us shape the leaders of tomorrow by contacting Jan, CROSSROADS Volunteer Recruiter at Jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. Mentor one child… change two lives.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org. Join NCJW in celebrating 100 years of helping women, children and families in Houston through advocacy and community service. Celebrate our 100th anniversary with us at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on November 23, 2013 (specialevents@ncjwhouston.org).
