HALLOWEEN TIPS
Halloween is a kid’s delight. It’s a blast to dress up in costumes, go trick-ortreating, attend parties and most of all, eat candy. At the same time, Halloween can be scary for parents. Costumes can be dangerous, too much candy can be sickening and walking around at night can be risky. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offer these tips (in anagram form) to make sure your little ghouls and goblins have a safe Halloween: S - Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible. A - Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Children should walk in groups or with a trusted adult. F - Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see trick-ortreaters.
E - Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before they’re eaten.
N - Never walk near lit candles or other open flames. Be sure to wear flameresistant costumes.
H - Hold a flashlight while trick-ortreating to help see and help others see you. A - Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it when done to avoid skin irritation. L - Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. L - Lower the risk for serious eye injury by avoiding decorative contact lenses. O - Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. W - Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls. E - Eat only factory-wrapped candy. Avoid eating homemade treats unless you know the cook. E - Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult.
If you’re hosting a party or expecting trick-or-treaters: • Provide healthy treats, such as individual packs of raisins, trail mix or pretzels. Offer fruits, vegetables and cheeses to party guests. • Use party games and trick-or-treating as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity. • Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could cause falls. • Keep candle-lit jack-o-lanterns and other open flames away from doorsteps, walkways, landings and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of reach of pets and small children and never leave them unattended. • Drive safely and watch out for trick-or-treaters.
PLEASE SLOW DOWN FOR OUR KIDS!
Use caution as you travel through the community and watch for children walking to and from the bus stops. HELP REDUCE Acknowledge and obey the laws for school zones and CRIME & KEEP bus loading and unloading. If the lights are blinking, OUR STREETS you need to stop! GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER
• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/ dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

Architectural Control Committee (ACC). Springtime is the season to make repairs and upgrades to the exterior of your home, including the landscaping. Please don’t forget to submit your application before making a change to the exterior of your home. The ACC Committee tries to process the applications as quickly as possible. Supplying the specifications of your improvement and a sample or detailed list of materials to be used will also help speed up this process. You may contact Principal Management Group of Houston for an application.
KEEPING OUR DRAINS CLEAN
Did you know that you are responsible to keep the curbs in front of your property clean and free from yard waste and other debris? The curbs direct rainwater to the County’s storm drainage system and the water needs a clean path to flow through to the drains. Grass growing in the curbs and drains block that free flow and may contribute to the high water we typically see with a heavy rain.

“HATS OFF TO VOLUNTEERS” AT CY-FAIR ISD “Whenever you wear your hat, your day will be special.” - Margo Nickel
In Cy-Fair ISD, volunteers have the opportunity to wear lots of different hats. Some will find themselves wearing the hat of a library helper or classroom reader. Others find that organizing a fundraiser or mentoring a student is the hat they wear best. Whatever volunteer hat you are wearing in our schools, one thing is certain; your day will be special. Cy-Fair ISD volunteers center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a significant contribution to the education of children. They give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of our students. Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to be able to draw from a terrific diversity of skills and knowledge in its community. If you are interested in being a part of an exciting group of volunteers and making a difference in your Cy-Fair ISD Schools or would like more information, please feel free to contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at 281-894-3950.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through October. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CORNERSTONE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH BLESSING OF THE PETS
OCTOBER 6th at 4 PM Chances are you’ve heard the term “pet blessing,” but aren’t sure what it entails (no pun intended) or what the purpose is. Well, the simplest way to describe a pet blessing is: A spiritual celebration to honor our loyal companions who love us unconditionally. This special ceremony is traditionally held in the fall around St. Francis of Assisi Day, October 4th. This ceremony is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. St. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things: “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” Cornerstone UMC will be holding its “Blessing of the Pets” on Sunday, October 6th, at 4 PM. People are invited to bring their pets (fish, snakes, cats, dogs, hamsters, etc.) to receive a special blessing. We will gather in front of the worship center building and following a brief liturgy, Dr. Dave Meadows will

CORNERSTONE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH P.R.A.Y. PROGRAM OF RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES WITH YOUTH
Cornerstone United Methodist church invites all young people entering grades 1st through 5th to join us for the P.R.A.Y program. These classes are FREE of charge and will be held every Sunday at 9:30 AM beginning September 1st and will continue through the end of December. God and Me - Grades 1st - 3rd: Youngsters in this group will learn of God’s love while cultivating a “best friends” relationship with Jesus. In each lesson, children will make a game that will be kept in a GAMEBox (God And Me Exploring BOX). These games will reinforce the Bible lessons and provide opportunities for families to explore God’s love together. God and Family - Grades 4th - 5th: This program is designed to help youth understand the importance of family and God’s role in a healthy family. Young people and their families will explore their faith together. These programs are officially recognized by the Boys Scouts of America, Camp Fire USA, Girls Scouts USA and American Heritage Girls as the religious awards program for youth. Awards will be given in February to Scouts and any other child who commits to and successfully completes the requirements of this program. Since regular attendance is mandatory, make-up dates have been included in the schedule in case of absence.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY ON JONAH
Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted video study by Priscilla Shirer Interruptions. They’re aggravating. Sometimes infuriating. They make us want to tell people what we think of them. But how we handle interruptions actually tell us more about ourselves. The prophet Jonah’s existence was interrupted by a call of God that would require a complete change of life. When Jonah was willing to allow God to interrupt his life, the result was revival in an entire city. What do we do when God interrupts our lives? Many times, like Jonah, we run! In this 7-session video Bible study, Priscilla redefines interruption and shows that interruption is actually God’s invitation to do something beyond our wildest dreams. Come join us every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM beginning Oct. 22, 2013 at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX 77095. Registration goes through Oct 15, 2013. Call the Church office at 281-463-6600 to order the workbook ($15) and to reserve childcare. To register on line go to www.christcov.net.
