HALLOWEEN Halloween is on a Thursday this year and we wish to remind residents to please use care when driving home from work that evening, as there will be lots of kids out and about trick or treating. Unfortunately, sometimes along with the treats of Halloween, we experience the tricks - egging, toilet papering and general hijinks. If you should see something suspicious, please contact the Fort Bend County Sheriff at 281-341-4665 (not the guardhouse). While many teens may think it is funny to egg homes or vehicles, it can be quite a mess and expensive to clean. While this type of vandalism may seem harmless and might be done in a random manner, to those who are on the receiving end, it can feel very personal.

COUNTRY SIDE MOBILE VET CLINIC VISITS CANYON GATE Mark your calendars! The Country Side Mobile Vet Clinic is scheduled to return to Canyon Gate on Saturday, November 2nd, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM, at the recreation center. Dr. Regina Jamieson is the visiting veterinarian and is licensed by the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.

The date for the Annual Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, December 5th at 7:00 PM. The meeting will take place at the Cinco Ranch Church of Christ, located adjacent to the subdivision at 6655 S. Mason Road. Please plan to attend. Look for an agenda in the mail in early November.

There are many of you out there that want to help wildlife but because of your job and the demands of a family you feel you don’t have the time. There IS something you can do and you can do it right in your own backyard. Your yard can become a Certified Wildlife Habitat site through the National Wildlife Federation. Whether you live in an apartment, in a high-rise or on a 10-acre ranch, you can create a haven for wildlife. You can even have your school or business certified. Community organizations can get areas certified as well. You’d be one of 150,000 certified sites across the country. There are four requirements for getting your property certified. You must provide water, food, cover and a place to raise young. Examples of food sources are native plants, berries,

Mature trees, a brush pile or even a roosting box placed by you, can provide the needed cover. Many of the same places the wildlife use for cover can also be used to raise young. Examples of places to raise young are dense shrubs, a nesting box or vegetation. Once you have provided these essential elements, you can become a Certified Wildlife Habitat.

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns.

Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation. There is NO PARKING anytime in bicycle lanes. EZ TAGS FOR FRONT GATE ACCESS The Homeowners’ Association sells EZ tags that will open the resident gate at the Canyon Gate entrance. Residents may purchase these at the onsite office for $35. These EZ tags contain a battery that should last for, approximately, 3 years. The HOA offers a one-year warranty on these tags. If the battery goes bad and your EZ tag stops working within the first year, the tag will be replaced at no cost. If your EZ tag stops working after the one-year time limit, a new EZ tag will need to be purchased.

KATY ISD NEW WEBSITE HOMEPAGE LAUNCHED Dear Katy ISD Family, Katy ISD is proud to announce the launch of its new website homepage and the gradual transition of department and campus websites over the course of the fall semester. The new homepage is the culmination of a yearlong initiative to gather feedback and direction from parents, staff and other Katy stakeholders about how the District’s website could better serve our community’s needs. KATY ELKS SOCCER SHOOT BOASTS SIBLING WINNERS Saturday, September 14th was a very exciting day for sibling winners in the Katy Elks Lodge Soccer Shoot. Winning first place in the 7 and Under girls category was Kendall Grimes. This was her second Soccer Shoot win, as she did the same two years ago at age 5. Kendall’s brother won the 7 and Under boys division. This was his first outing as a contestant shooter. Both became eligible to compete at the district competition being held at Clear Lake Elks Lodge in September. Winners at district will advance to the State finals at the Elks Children’s Services Center at Ottine, between Lulling and Gonzales in October.

Some of the services offered to homeless Veterans on this day include medical exams, job advice, gifts of backpacks or other supplies, legal advice and of course, a barbeque lunch and sack lunches to take away for later provided by area Elks. Elks from three of the area lodges were present on Friday to serve the food and provide an encouraging smile to those who greatly needed it. Clear Lake, Houston and Katy Elks lodges were represented at the Stand Down. Prior preparation of the meat and purchasing of supplies needed was handled by members of the Houston Elks Lodge, with their Auxiliary preparing sandwiches for the sack lunches. The motto: “Elks Care - Elks Share” was quite apparent.

The rains of Friday, September 20, 2013 could not put a damper on the activities of the Houston Veterans Affairs sponsored Stand Down at Emancipation Park in Houston. As is the practice each year, the Gulf Coast District Elks lodges participate by supplying and serving meals to all the homeless Veterans who come to the park for the event, as well as volunteers there to help. Approximately 300-350 people were served a noon meal.

We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. BEAR CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH Offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading 2013-14 Bear Creek Baptist Church is offering Upward Basketball and Cheerleading for K-8th Grade. Even more impressive was the fact that the team did not receive one goal against during the entire tournament. Fredy Sanguinetti, who prepared the girls for the rigors of multiple pressure packed games, coaches the team. Coach Fredy said “They played great and deserve that first place trophy.”

RUOK PROGRAM Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a comput-

er-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

Start From Scratch Some convenience foods are often ridiculously cheap, loaded as they are with high-fructose corn syrup and chemicals, yet they rarely taste better than homemade. To cut costs and ensure the tastiest of feasts, make your own piecrust, cranberry sauce and gravy rather than opening up a box or can. Instead of paying $8 for a single loaf from an artisanal bakery, bake up some dinner rolls with yeast, butter and flour for a little over $7. A bakery-bought pecan pumpkin pie can go for upwards of $50, but a homemade version will run you $15 and $5 less if you omit the pecans. Know When to Buy Canned or Frozen Some canned and frozen foods are fine alternatives to fresh. Canned pumpkin is one of the great American ingredients and the generic brands are as good as premium labels. You could make a pie using a fresh pumpkin for $5, but you would wind up with a more watery filling than one made from a $2.49 can. And frozen vegetables can be both superior to and cheaper than out-of-season fresh ones; a bag of Cascadian Farms flash-frozen baby peas is $2.69, compared with $3.99 a pound or more for fresh snow peas, the only kind you are likely to find in November. Don’t Be a Slave to a Recipe If you don’t want to spring for three kinds of herbs in your soup or stuffing, choose one. Or none. Nothing but salt and pepper is ever really indispensable. Substitute water for canned stock in a soup; use a slurry of flour and water to thicken your pan gravy rather than making turkey stock. Instead of investing in a can of shortening for a piecrust, substitute butter for the two tablespoons needed in the recipe. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that the whole really is much more than the parts. Cut corners where you have to and all anyone will notice in the end is a heaping plate.

THE THANKSGIVING TURKEY Of all the Thanksgiving symbols, the turkey has become the most well known. The wild turkey is native to northern Mexico and the eastern United States. The turkey has brown features with buff-colored feathers on the tips of the wing and on the tail. The male turkey is called a Tom and as with most birds, is bigger and has brighter and more colorful plumage. The female is called a Hen and is generally smaller and drab in color. The Tom turkey has a long wattle (a fleshy, wrinkled, brightly colored fold of skin hanging from the neck or throat) at the base of its bill and additional wattles on the neck, as well as a prominent tuft of bristles resembling a beard projecting downward from its chest. The turkey was originally domesticated in Mexico and was brought into Europe early in the 16th century. Since that time, turkeys have been extensively raised because of the excellent quality of their meat and eggs. Some of the common breeds of turkey in the United States are the Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland and Bourbon Red. Though there is no real evidence that turkey was served at the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving, in a book written by the Pilgrim’s Governor Bradford, he does make mention of wild turkeys. In a letter sent to England, another Pilgrim describes how the governor sent “four men out fowling” returning with turkeys, ducks and geese.
