November 2013 HAPPY THANKSGIVING! WHAT’S NEW FOR NOVEMBER 2013 Is a low-fat, high taste Thanksgiving really possible? You bet it is! Also, how to squeeze in exercise this holiday season. Plus, maximize your dollar this Black Friday. Lots more in your November issue of your Grand Lakes’ newsletter!

NEWSLETTER ARTICLE DEADLINES Newsletter articles are due by the 20th of the month for the upcoming issue. Newsletter article deadlines are: December 2013 - due 10/20 January 2014 - due 11/20

GRAND LAKES NEWS It’s that time of year again - the holidays are upon us! More than family gatherings, enjoying meals together with friends and shopping, decorating, etc., the holiday season reminds of something much more important - VOLUNTEERISM. We get even busier during the holiday season and we forget about the most important thing - giving the gift of our time to someone else in need. As someone who’s dedicated and invested many years of volunteering and charitable giving, I can only humbly request for our community members to do something great this holiday season and each day. Something as simple as gathering your clean towels you no longer use and donating them to a local shelter will do. How about going through your kiddos’ books and old toys and share these treasures with another child who will cherish these things as if they were new. Or how about asking your local salon or doctor’s office for their older magazines or

gathering some from your own home and dropping them off at a local senior living community. Imagine the blessings that await you with your acts of kindness. Do something great, do something together and do something for society. Share your thoughts with me at: monica_vagholkar@yahoo.com.

GRAND LAKES NEEDS CHAIRPERSONS! We need chairpersons and co-chairs for the following committees: • Grand Lakes Woman’s Association • Grand Lakes Kids’ Playgroup These are very popular and important committees, which bring together your neighbors and friends. If you want to chair any of these groups, contact Sherita Jeter at PCMI (281-870-0585 or sjeter@stes.com).

YOUR HEALTH NOW! LOW FAT, HIGH TASTE THANKSGIVING! Let the eating festival begin! Mashed potatoes WITH gravy, buttery biscuits, ooey gooey pecan pie, fried turkey, all the trimmings and THEN some. Sounds like your traditional Thanksgiving holiday menu? You CAN eat all your favorite foods low fat and with high taste this holiday season! Here’s how: • When making rue, use skim milk with a cholesterol free spread, like Smart Balance. • If a recipe calls for cream, use skim milk. It tastes just the same.

Happy Thanksgiving!

• Mashed potatoes are a must, but use half potato-half boiled cauliflower. It will be tasty AND you will get essential vitamins. • Skip the fatty dips with your fruit and veggie platters. Presentation is everything. Make your platters creative and if these dips are a must: make homemade dips. • Green bean casseroles are the tradition, so use low or no sodium soup, freshly boiled and chopped green beans, skim milk, a dash of fresh pepper and you can still afford the French fried onions! • Love the pies? Make your own low fat pie crust from scratch. The readymade crusts are made with shortening and other unnecessary preservatives and additives.

Oh boy - you just ate too much Thanksgiving food. Now what do you do? BURN IT OFF! It is difficult to stick to an exercise plan around the holidays, but it isn’t impossible: • Make it a non-negotiable that your exercise is priority during the holiday season. • Ask family and friends to join you if they are visiting from out of town. • BEGIN your day with a walk/run or gym time. • Post eating fest, go for a brisk walk. The dishwasher can do all the work. • Drink lots of fluids to curb your hunger. Chances are you’re thirsty, vs. hungry. • Participate in the many local walks/runs that take place around the holidays.

RESIDENTIAL

Do you have pets, love animals and want to help your neighbors who have pets? Grand Lakes has a Pet Lost & Found service which helps reunite lost or found pets with their families. To receive pet “amber” alerts, please email Lisa at grandlakes4pets@aol.com and ask to be added to her list. If you ever find a lost pet or lose one of your own you’ll be glad to have this service at your fingertips. Please see more information on page (last page) and in the “Helpful Numbers for Grand Lakes” page in the back.

GRAND LAKES PET LOST & FOUND ON FACEBOOK! Be sure to check out the Facebook pages for pets lost and found in our area: www.facebook.com/GrandLakes4Pets. If residents “like” this page, they will receive even more info. regarding pets for adoption, as well as those found and lost.

PET POOPS/YOU SCOOP When your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. This is a growing issue within the community. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every Grand Lakes homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet feces damages lawns and many residents are working hard to maintaining their grass!

STOP THAT BARKING! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electricshock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a midday visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

GRAND LAKES DOG PARK

Grand Lakes welcomes you and your four-legged friend to the community dog park. The park is located in the southeast corner of Grand Lakes: from south Fry Road go south on Rainwood Park Drive, left at Central Park (Grand Brooks Lane), left on Emily Park, left on Grandwood Lane, then right on Calico Crossing. The park and parking lot is on your right toward the end of the street.

5 STEPS TO A HAPPIER HEALTHIER PET

1. Protect your pet from extreme weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.). 2. Keep indoors or in a fenced yard and on a leash when walked. 3. Make sure they’re up to date with vaccinations. 4. Always make sure they’re wearing identification, so they can be returned to you if lost. 5. Spay or neuter your pet.

GRAND LAKES COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT) AND HAM RADIO VOLUNTEERS The CERT Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, like fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. Have you been trained as a CERT member? Caring For Pets and the People Who Care for Them

NOTE: Grand Lakes has a strict CATCH & RELEASE policy. Only “barb-less” hooks are allowed to prevent injuring fish that are caught and returned. Please use care when handling fish and gently return them to the water as quickly as possible. Trotlines or other non-standard fish-catching tools are forbidden. Common sense and proper care of the fish will ensure a long-lasting experience. The fish and the water “health” are monitored to ensure a thriving underwater environment.

USE OF ANY WATERCRAFT AND SWIMMING ARE PROHIBITED ON COMMUNITY LAKES This includes kayaking, canoeing or any form of pleasure boating. The use of remote controlled water toys is okay. Remember, our lakes are for neighborhood beautification and approved shoreline fishing. Violation of these rules is strictly prohibited!

ASK YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNER By Craig Narum CFP®, Grand Lakes Resident THREE TIPS FOR SURVIVING MARKET TURBULENCE Most stock market investors are looking for the same result: strong and steady gains of their investments. Dealing with a period of sustained falling stock prices is not easy. All too often, investors react to a sharp drop in prices by panic selling or digging in their heels despite deteriorating fundamentals. But more thoughtful investors see a correction or downturn as an opportunity to review the risks in their portfolios and make adjustments where necessary. When confronted with any adverse market event - whether it is a one-day blip, a more lengthy market correction (a decline of between 10% to 20%) or a prolonged bear market (a decline of more than 20%) - take time to review your portfolio. Dealing with volatility can be difficult. Here are some suggestions to help you and your portfolio survive market turbulence. Tip 1: Keep a long-term perspective. The only certainty about the stock market is this: It will always experience ups and downs. That’s why it’s important to keep emotions in check and stay focused on your financial goals. A buy-andhold strategy - making an investment and then holding on to it despite short-term market moves - can help. The opposite of buy-and-hold investing is market timing - buying and selling investments based on what you think the market will do next. Market timing, as most investment professionals will tell you, is risky. If your predictions are wrong, you could invest when the market is on its way down or sell when it’s on its way up. In other words, you risk locking in a loss or missing the market’s best days. Tip 2: Maintain your balance. Over time, your asset allocation is likely to shift as your assets appreciate and depreciate. Rebalance regularly to help ensure your assets are properly allocated. Also periodically reexamine your risk tolerance. Has anything changed in your life that has made you more or less risk averse? Tip 3: Talk with a professional. A financial professional can help you separate emotionally driven decisions from those based on your goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. Researchers in the field of behavioral finance have found that emotions often lead investors to read too much into recent events even though those events may not reflect long-term realities. With the aid of a financial professional, you can sort through these distinctions and you’ll likely find that if your investment strategy made sense before the crisis, it will still make sense afterward. It’s important to remember that periods of falling prices are a natural part of investing in the stock market. While some investors will use a variety of trading tools, including individual stock and stock index options, to hedge their portfolios against a sudden drop in the market, perhaps the best move you can make is reevaluating and limiting your overall risk position.

Beckendorff Jr. High hosted the first annual “8th Grade Games” for their students the second week of school. The grade level was divided into 24 teams and each team rotated through various challenges to participate in team and character building activities. A few stations included solving a mystery with their teammates in their classrooms, a low ropes/trust course outside, an academic challenge in the gym and a digital safety seminar in the LGI. The purpose of these games was to foster acceptance and inclusion amongst all 8th grade students. “The 8th Grade Games were such a fun way to kick off the year. It was neat to see students communicate with and work through challenges with students they may have not previously known. Mrs. Riley, the 8th grade counselor and I want to keep this energy and sense of teamwork going throughout the year,” stated 8th grade principal Kelley Kirila.

KATY ISD NEW WEBSITE HOMEPAGE LAUNCHED Dear Katy ISD Family, Katy ISD is proud to announce the launch of its new website homepage and the gradual transition of department and campus websites over the course of the fall semester. The new homepage is the culmination of a yearlong initiative to gather feedback and direction from parents, staff and other Katy stakeholders about how the District’s website could better serve our community’s needs. What emerged is a clean design, consistent and improved navigation, an upgrade to the technology that supports the site and quick acess to our most frequently visited District-wide webpages. Department pages and campus websites will be transitioned to the new homepage format during the fall semester. In the meantime, some department pages and all campus websites will be temporarily linked to the older version of the District’s website. Some examples of pages in which visitors will experience redirects to the old website are the Transportation, Teaching & Learning and Special Education pages.

THEATER/ARTS MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. Museum of Dysfunction IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. Rome by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, work shopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 pm. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www.mildredsumbrella.com - info@mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS) Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org. PS: We are starting rehearsal for this Christmas Show. You have time to prepare for it.

SG1 U12 GIRLS TEAM WINS LABOR DAY TOURNAMENT

KATY TEAM GOES UNDEFEATED TO WIN 2013 HOUSTON LABOR DAY CUP

Sports Group 1 (SG1) is proud to announce that our U12 girls team took first place in the 30th Annual Houston Labor Day Soccer Tournament held at Katy and Bear Creek Parks. “The ladies worked together, overcoming the heat, lack of substitutions and still remained without a loss throughout the three-day tournament, we are extremely proud of their efforts,” said SG1 Director, Mr. Alex Parra. Even more impressive was the fact that the team did not receive one goal against during the entire tournament. Fredy Sanguinetti, who prepared the girls for the rigors of multiple pressure packed games, coaches the team. Coach Fredy said “They played great and deserve that first place trophy.”

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

RUOK PROGRAM Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a comput-

36

er-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’

Grand Lakes November 2013

you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

Life is a journey meant to be shared.

THANKSGIVING ON A BUDGET

With the economy still slumping, a lavish Thanksgiving might not be on the table this year. But we can still - and should - feast. We just have to squeeze our fistful of dollars a little harder. Go for What’s in Season When planning your meal, first consult the calendar. This is no time for asparagus and artichokes. Buy produce in season and you will get much more for your money, not to mention livelier flavors. Brussels sprouts are at their peak in late November; farmers’ markets should have them in huge quantities, still on their stalks. (Serving them sliced rather than whole not only makes them more tantalizing but also helps them go further.) Fresh herbs have become available all year round, so it can be a better deal to buy a bunch rather than an expensive jar of the dried kind - fresh sage might be $1.99 compared with $6.50 for half an ounce dried, which could go stale by the next time you need it. Buy a Supermarket Bird In an ideal world we would all be eating heritage turkeys. They have outstanding texture and flavor and when we buy them, we help preserve unique breeds. But they are anything but a bargain: A 12 to 14 pound bird, which feeds eight, from Heritage Foods USA goes for $159 including shipping or more than $10 a pound. Supermarket turkeys can be fine alternatives for less than $2 a pound. Just be sure to buy a free-range or organic turkey rather than an industrial one

Start From Scratch Some convenience foods are often ridiculously cheap, loaded as they are with high-fructose corn syrup and chemicals, yet they rarely taste better than homemade. To cut costs and ensure the tastiest of feasts, make your own piecrust, cranberry sauce and gravy rather than opening up a box or can. Instead of paying $8 for a single loaf from an artisanal bakery, bake up some dinner rolls with yeast, butter and flour for a little over $7. A bakery-bought pecan pumpkin pie can go for upwards of $50, but a homemade version will run you $15 and $5 less if you omit the pecans. Know When to Buy Canned or Frozen Some canned and frozen foods are fine alternatives to fresh. Canned pumpkin is one of the great American ingredients and the generic brands are as good as premium labels. You could make a pie using a fresh pumpkin for $5, but you would wind up with a more watery filling than one made from a $2.49 can. And frozen vegetables can be both superior to and cheaper than out-of-season fresh ones; a bag of Cascadian Farms flash-frozen baby peas is $2.69, compared with $3.99 a pound or more for fresh snow peas, the only kind you are likely to find in November. Don’t Be a Slave to a Recipe If you don’t want to spring for three kinds of herbs in your soup or stuffing, choose one. Or none. Nothing but salt and pepper is ever really indispensable. Substitute water for canned stock in a soup; use a slurry of flour and water to thicken your pan gravy rather than making turkey stock. Instead of investing in a can of shortening for a piecrust, substitute butter for the two tablespoons needed in the recipe. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that the whole really is much more than the parts. Cut corners where you have to and all anyone will notice in the end is a heaping plate.

Make It a Potluck Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. People are happy to pitch in and bring a dish or two and potlucks are trendy right now. Wine is not included in the budget here, so be open about suggesting a suitable-for-turkey California Zinfandel, like Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull, which is less than $10. www.epicurious.com

THE THANKSGIVING TURKEY Of all the Thanksgiving symbols, the turkey has become the most well known. The wild turkey is native to northern Mexico and the eastern United States. The turkey has brown features with buff-colored feathers on the tips of the wing and on the tail. The male turkey is called a Tom and as with most birds, is bigger and has brighter and more colorful plumage. The female is called a Hen and is generally smaller and drab in color. The Tom turkey has a long wattle (a fleshy, wrinkled, brightly colored fold of skin hanging from the neck or throat) at the base of its bill and additional wattles on the neck, as well as a prominent tuft of bristles resembling a beard projecting downward from its chest. The turkey was originally domesticated in Mexico and was brought into Europe early in the 16th century. Since that time, turkeys have been extensively raised because of the excellent quality of their meat and eggs. Some of the common breeds of turkey in the United States are the Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland and Bourbon Red. Though there is no real evidence that turkey was served at the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving, in a book written by the Pilgrim’s Governor Bradford, he does make mention of wild turkeys. In a letter sent to England, another Pilgrim describes how the governor sent “four men out fowling” returning with turkeys, ducks and geese.
