KATY ELKS SOCCER SHOOT BOASTS SIBLING WINNERS Saturday, September 14 was a very exciting day for sibling winners in the Katy Elks Lodge Soccer Shoot. Winning first place in the 7 and Under girls category was Kendall Grimes. This was her second Soccer Shoot win, as she did the same two years ago at age 5. Kendall’s brother won the 7 and Under boys division. This was his first outing as a contestant shooter. Both became eligible to compete at the district competition being held at Clear Lake Elks Lodge in September. Winners at district will advance to the State finals at the Elks Children’s Services Center at Ottine, between Lulling and Gonzales in October. th

The Soccer Shoot involves shooting three balls (after one warm-up shot) at five different sized goals from a set distance. Points are then awarded for each successful shot with increasing points awarded as the goals become smaller and more difficult.

GULF COAST DISTRICT ELKS ASSIST IN HOUSTON ANNUAL VETERANS’ STAND DOWN The rains of Friday, September 20, 2013 could not put a damper on the activities of the Houston Veterans Affairs sponsored Stand Down at Emancipation Park in Houston. As is the practice each year, the Gulf Coast District Elks lodges participate by supplying and serving meals to all the homeless Veterans who come to the park for the event, as well as volunteers there to help. Approximately 300-350 people were served a noon meal. Some of the services offered to homeless Veterans on this day include medical exams, job advice, gifts of backpacks or other supplies, legal advice and of course, a barbeque lunch and sack lunches to take away for later provided by area Elks.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Elks from three of the area lodges were present on Friday to serve the food and provide an encouraging smile to those who greatly needed it. Clear Lake, Houston and Katy Elks lodges were represented at the Stand Down. Prior preparation of the meat and purchasing of supplies needed was handled by members of the Houston Elks Lodge, with their Auxiliary preparing sandwiches for the sack lunches. The motto: “Elks Care - Elks Share” was quite apparent.

Although this day may help some of the immediate needs of those Veterans who need us most, for many it can become the beginning of the road to independence and self-support through a number of the services provided on this important day each year. Some assistance is available for rent, employment and job finding in addition to the above-mentioned medical and legal assistance. Jennifer Huebner, MD • Nichole F. Cole, MD • Amina Sayeed, MD

THANKSGIVING ON A BUDGET Go for What’s in Season When planning your meal, first consult the calendar. This is no time for asparagus and artichokes. Buy produce in season and you will get much more for your money, not to mention livelier flavors. Brussels sprouts are at their peak in late November; farmers’ markets should have them in huge quantities, still on their stalks. (Serving them sliced rather than whole not only makes them more tantalizing but also helps them go further.) Fresh herbs have become available all year round, so it can be a better deal to buy a bunch rather than an expensive jar of the dried kind - fresh sage might be $1.99 compared with $6.50 for half an ounce dried, which could go stale by the next time you need it. Buy a Supermarket Bird In an ideal world we would all be eating heritage turkeys. They have outstanding texture and flavor and when we buy them, we help preserve unique breeds. But they are anything but a bargain: A 12 to 14 pound bird, which feeds eight, from Heritage Foods USA goes for $159 including shipping or more than $10 a pound. Supermarket turkeys can be fine alternatives for less than $2 a pound. Just be sure to buy a free-range or organic turkey rather than an industrial one injected with flavored oil. Plus, brining will add flavor and improve texture in even the least expensive birds, all for about $2.29 for a big box of kosher salt, an ingredient that can be used to season the rest of the meal. Start From Scratch Some convenience foods are often ridiculously cheap, loaded as they are with high-fructose corn syrup and chemicals, yet they rarely taste better than homemade. To cut costs and ensure the tastiest of feasts, make your own piecrust, cranberry sauce and gravy rather than opening up a box or can. Instead of paying $8 for a single loaf from an artisanal bakery, bake up some dinner rolls with yeast, butter and flour for a little over $7. A bakery-bought pecan pumpkin pie can go for upwards of $50, but a homemade version will run you $15 and $5 less if you omit the pecans. Know When to Buy Canned or Frozen Some canned and frozen foods are fine alternatives to fresh. Canned pumpkin is one of the great American ingredients and the generic brands are as good as premium labels. You could make a pie using a fresh pumpkin for $5, but you would wind up with a more watery filling than one made from a $2.49 can. And frozen vegetables can be both superior to and cheaper than out-of-season fresh ones; a bag of Cascadian

Farms flash-frozen baby peas is $2.69, compared with $3.99 a pound or more for fresh snow peas, the only kind you are likely to find in November. Don’t Be a Slave to a Recipe If you don’t want to spring for three kinds of herbs in your soup or stuffing, choose one. Or none. Nothing but salt and pepper is ever really indispensable. Substitute water for canned stock in a soup; use a slurry of flour and water to thicken your pan gravy rather than making turkey stock. Instead of investing in a can of shortening for a piecrust, substitute butter for the two tablespoons needed in the recipe. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that the whole really is much more than the parts. Cut corners where you have to and all anyone will notice in the end is a heaping plate. Make It a Potluck Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. People are happy to pitch in and bring a dish or two and potlucks are trendy right now. Wine is not included in the budget here, so be open about suggesting a suitable-for-turkey California Zinfandel, like Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull, which is less than $10. www.epicurious.com

THE THANKSGIVING TURKEY Of all the Thanksgiving symbols, the turkey has become the most well known. The wild turkey is native to northern Mexico and the eastern United States. The turkey has brown features with buff-colored feathers on the tips of the wing and on the tail. The male turkey is called a Tom and as with most birds, is bigger and has brighter and more colorful plumage. The female is called a Hen and is generally smaller and drab in color. The Tom turkey has a long wattle (a fleshy, wrinkled, brightly colored fold of skin hanging from the neck or throat) at the base of its bill and additional wattles on the neck, as well as a prominent tuft of bristles resembling a beard projecting downward from its chest. The turkey was originally domesticated in Mexico and was brought into Europe early in the 16th century. Since that time, turkeys have been extensively raised because of the excellent quality of their meat and eggs. Some of the common breeds of turkey in the United States are the Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland and Bourbon Red. Though there is no real evidence that turkey was served at the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving, in a book written by the Pilgrim’s Governor Bradford, he does make mention of wild turkeys. In a letter sent to England, another Pilgrim describes how the governor sent “four men out fowling” returning with turkeys, ducks and geese.

KATY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT WWW.KATYISD.ORG IMPORTANT DATES

November 8th - Early Dismissal November 27th - 29th - Thanksgiving Holiday KATY ISD BOARD CALLS FOR NOVEMBER BOND ELECTION During the August Board work study meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees accepted a bond referendum recommendation by the Student Activity Facilities (SAF) Bond Committee and called for a Nov. 5th Bond election. It is projected that there will be no tax rate increase from the current rate of $.40 with the $99 million authorization. The authorization of the bond referendum by voters would fund the building of three new Student Activity Facilities: Agricultural Sciences Center - $25 million The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on Katy-Hockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on

Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution. STEM Project Center - $4.5 million The STEM Project Center will provide additional classroom and project space for students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and activities. It will provide increased space for students to conduct large-scale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M. Center while students are viewing from their classroom. 14,000 Seat Stadium - $69.5 million A second stadium will address scheduling issues that will become increasingly difficult as future high schools are opened. Six Katy ISD high schools currently participate in varsity football, soccer and marching contests at Rhodes Stadium. With the opening of Tompkins High School, Katy ISD will schedule seven varsity football teams into Rhodes Stadium beginning in August of 2014. Scheduling seven schools in Rhodes Stadium will create a challenge for the District to comply with the U.I.L. 5-day rule. For more information about the Student Activity Facilities bond package, visit www.katyisd.org/facilities/ Pages/2013FacilitiesProposal.aspx.

KATY ISD NEW WEBSITE HOMEPAGE LAUNCHED Dear Katy ISD Family, Katy ISD is proud to announce the launch of its new website homepage and the gradual transition of department and campus websites over the course of the fall semester. The new homepage is the culmination of a yearlong initiative to gather feedback and direction from parents, staff and other Katy stakeholders about how the

20

Katy Communicator November 2013

District’s website could better serve our community’s needs. What emerged is a clean design, consistent and improved navigation, an upgrade to the technology that supports the site and quick acess to our most frequently visited District-wide webpages. Department pages and campus websites will be transitioned to the new homepage format during the fall semester. In the meantime, some department pages and all campus websites will be temporarily linked to the older version of the District’s website. Some examples of pages in which visitors will experience redirects to the old website are the Transportation, Teaching & Learning and Special Education pages. We greatly appreciate your patience as we continue to improve upon the website to make it a better experience for all who visit it.

JET BAND MARCH-A-THON 2013

The James E Taylor Band would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their continued support of the JET Band March-A-Thon held in August. We are simply overwhelmed with the success of this event. Once again, our neighbors lined the streets cheering and encouraging the band as they made their way through the 6 mile route in the heat of the summer. We played 23 concerts and accepted generous donations from the most supportive network of Taylor High School families we have ever seen. This year we were joined by Taylor High School administrators, teachers, KISD board members and Superintendent Alton Frailey, all marching side by side with the students in a sincere show of support. This event would not be possible without the generous support of our local sponsors. These companies have chosen to be a part of our mission to create the upcoming leaders though music education and investment in the future of the Taylor Band. Our sincere thanks to:

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy. org. RUOK PROGRAM Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computergenerated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

Life is a journey meant to be shared.

Come join us on The Way.

PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

Let the eating festival begin! Mashed potatoes WITH gravy, buttery biscuits, ooey gooey pecan pie, fried turkey, all the trimmings and THEN some. Sounds like your traditional Thanksgiving holiday menu? You CAN eat all your favorite foods low fat and with high taste this holiday season! Here’s how: • When making rue, use skim milk with a cholesterol free spread, like Smart Balance. • If a recipe calls for cream, use skim milk. It tastes just the same. • Mashed potatoes are a must, but use half potato-half boiled cauliflower. It will be tasty AND you will get essential vitamins. • Skip the fatty dips with your fruit and veggie platters. Presentation is everything. Make your platters creative and if these dips are a must: make homemade dips. • Green bean casseroles are the tradition, so use low or no sodium soup, freshly boiled and chopped green beans, skim milk, a dash of fresh pepper and you can still afford the French fried onions! • Love the pies? Make your own low fat pie crust from scratch. The ready- made crusts are made with shortening and other unnecessarypreservatives and additives. For all your home maintenance and repair needs call us today. No job is too small.

BURN THOSE TURKEY DAY CALORIES! Oh boy - you just ate too much Thanksgiving food. Now what do you do? BURN IT OFF! It is difficult to stick to an exercise plan around the holidays, but it isn’t impossible: • Make it a non-negotiable that your exercise is priority during the holiday season. • Ask family and friends to join you if they are visiting from out of town. • BEGIN your day with a walk/run or gym time. • Post eating fest, go for a brisk walk. The dishwasher can do all the work. • Drink lots of fluids to curb your hunger. Chances are you’re thirsty, vs. hungry. • Participate in the many local walks/runs that take place around the holidays.

CONSUMER SAVINGS: BLACK FRIDAY HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS! Eating - done. Clean up - done. Food coma - happening. Boredom - started. Shopping - IT’S BLACK FRIDAY! Maximize your shopping dollars with these tips: • Set spending limits. • Gift unused gift cards you have at home. • Coordinate and schedule a family portrait/photograph - these make GREAT gifts. • Shop at thrift stores or outlet stores. Many times you will find NEW items at the thrift store. • VOLUNTEER. There’s no greater gift than giving someone the gift of your time. • Use your credit card rewards. • Price match competitor ads and online deals. • Remember NEEDS vs. WANTS. • Look at your list and check it not once, not twice but many times. Is it really necessary to give EVERYONE on your list a gift?
