November 2013 CONSTABLES

PLEASE CONTACT THE CONSTABLE AT 281-463-6666 WHEN ANY SUSPICIOUS OR DISORDERLY CONTACT IS OBSERVED.

NOTTINGHAM HAPPENINGS A HAPPY NO PARKING UPDATE Great news! Harris County has agreed with NCCIA regarding the parking issues on Windsor Glen. There are now three “No Parking” signs on each side of Windsor Glen from the Ford dealership to Laverton. The constables began issuing tickets to violators on 9/14/13 and management at the dealership has been informed accordingly. The impetus for our involvement stemmed from the fact that Ford employees and patrons were parking along both sides of Windsor Glen, which made the street almost impassable during working hours. That problem has now been, hopefully, resolved. We would like to profusely thank Precinct 5 Constables for taking our concerns to the Harris County Traffic Department. GOOD NEWS ON TWO FORECLOSED HOMES The neighbors in the 500 block of Rennie St. and the residents on Pittsford Ct. can finally breathe a sigh of relief in that homes in each of those areas that have long been a thorn in the side of NCCIA and the neighborhood, finally have been sold by the mortgage companies that foreclosed them. We spent a great deal of money for legal action against both previous owners of the homes due to delinquent installments and a multitude of deed restriction violations. The current owner of the Pittsford Ct. home is apparently an investor who has spent money on renovations. As I write this, the house is on the market for $300,000+, although

I’m betting it has sold by the time this issue goes to print. The home on Rennie is in the process of renovations and is listed for sale or lease. In both of these cases, foreclosures have ended up benefiting our community in the end. BAD BREAKS: WATERING TIME Our community continues to experience many water leaks due to water line breaks. This is primarily being caused by soil shifting, which can be attributed to the extremely dry weather we have experienced the past few years. The lines are old and when the soil moves, it tends to try to move the pipeline, which leads to the breakage. Our MUD has quickly repaired the damage, which is greatly appreciated. Homeowners can also assist in this area by being more diligent about watering their lawns. If the water lines are breaking due to soil movement, I can assure you that your slab is moving too. Personally, I would rather spend about $100 per month on my water bill than spend in excess of $10,000 for foundation repair down the road. Something to consider… PANHANDLING ACTIVITIES Many of you have seen an increase in panhandlers in our area, particularly in the area on the east side of Fry Road near the strip center and on major intersections in the Katy area. We all have different opinions on this topic and I will not go into those here. My foremost concern is the safety of our residents. In that vein, I will ask you to please report any panhandler activity on NC streets to our Constables and they will ask the violators to move on.

Happy Thanksgiving!

ANNUAL MEETING The 2013 annual meeting of NCCIA will be held at the community center at Houghton and Kingsland on Tuesday, November 19th, starting at 7 PM. All homeowners are encouraged to attend. have been very fortunate in that our MUD, MCUD, has assisted us in areas whereby they are legally permitted to do so, such as paying for street lighting, assisting in alleyway repairs when storm drains are involved and other areas involving utilities. However, they are faced with additional costs also such as our aging storm sewers, water lines and sewage treatment plants. Therefore, the NCCIA Board felt we had little choice but to make an increase in our annual assessment fees. A few months ago, we wrote a newsletter article regarding this subject and the majority of homeowners who responded to our request for input felt we should not back off on the security of the subdivision. The annual cost of our Constables is about $260,000 and that is really the only area where we could feasibly reduce fees. Nottingham Country is known as a very safe subdivision and we have to give some credit to the Constables presence for that fact.

As NCCIA directors, we take our fiduciary responsibilities seriously and be advised that we will continue to spend prudently and the increased fees will be used entirely for the betterment ANNUAL HOA FEES INCREASING of our community. In addition to doing much needed alleyway At the September NCCIA Board meeting, the Directors repair, we intend to have another pavilion built in Rennie Park, approved a $100 increase to the annual HOA fees that which should be a nice addition to the park. homeowners will pay beginning 2014. At the present time, homeowners pay $200 per year and that will now increase NCCIA Board of Directors to $300 and will show up on the statements mailed to homeowners in November.

There has been no increase since 1996 and even at $300 per Criminal Mischief 1 year, we will still have one of the lowest assessments in Harris Suspicious Persons/Vehicles 25 County. No one wants to pay additional fees; we as DirecThefts 0 tors fully realize that. However, the increased alleyway repair Traffic Stops 55 costs in Sections 1, 2 and 3 are causing a rapid depletion of Vacation Watch 45 our reserves. The Board debated whether to raise the fees the full $100 or something less, but it was determined that we need to get some much needed repairs completed and move forward. No one can predict the future, but hopefully, Please note that burglary to motor vehicles continues as homewe will find ourselves in a position in a few years, whereby, owners are NOT locking their vehicles that are parked on the we can reduce the fees back to the $200 per year level. THANKSGIVING ON A BUDGET

With the economy still slumping, a lavish Thanksgiving might not be on the table this year. But we can still - and should - feast. We just have to squeeze our fistful of dollars a little harder. Go for What’s in Season When planning your meal, first consult the calendar. This is no time for asparagus and artichokes. Buy produce in season and you will get much more for your money, not to mention livelier flavors. Brussels sprouts are at their peak in late November; farmers’ markets should have them in huge quantities, still on their stalks. (Serving them sliced rather than whole not only makes them more tantalizing but also helps them go further.) Fresh herbs have become available all year round, so it can be a better deal to buy a bunch rather than an expensive jar of the dried kind - fresh sage might be $1.99 compared with $6.50 for half an ounce dried, which could go stale by the next time you need it. Buy a Supermarket Bird In an ideal world we would all be eating heritage turkeys. They have outstanding texture and flavor and when we buy them, we help preserve unique breeds. But they are anything but a bargain: A 12 to 14 pound bird, which feeds eight, from Heritage Foods USA goes for $159 including shipping or more than $10 a pound. Supermarket turkeys can be fine alternatives for less than $2 a pound. Just be sure to buy a free-range or organic turkey rather than an industrial one injected with flavored oil. Plus, brining will add flavor and improve texture in even the least expensive birds, all for about $2.29 for a big box of kosher salt, an ingredient that can be used to season the rest of the meal.

Start From Scratch Some convenience foods are often ridiculously cheap, loaded as they are with high-fructose corn syrup and chemicals, yet they rarely taste better than homemade. To cut costs and ensure the tastiest of feasts, make your own piecrust, cranberry sauce and gravy rather than opening up a box or can. Instead of paying $8 for a single loaf from an artisanal bakery, bake up some dinner rolls with yeast, butter and flour for a little over $7. A bakery-bought pecan pumpkin pie can go for upwards of $50, but a homemade version will run you $15 and $5 less if you omit the pecans. Know When to Buy Canned or Frozen Some canned and frozen foods are fine alternatives to fresh. Canned pumpkin is one of the great American ingredients and the generic brands are as good as premium labels. You could make a pie using a fresh pumpkin for $5, but you would wind up with a more watery filling than one made from a $2.49 can. And frozen vegetables can be both superior to and cheaper than out-of-season fresh ones; a bag of Cascadian Farms flash-frozen baby peas is $2.69, compared with $3.99 a pound or more for fresh snow peas, the only kind you are likely to find in November. Don’t Be a Slave to a Recipe If you don’t want to spring for three kinds of herbs in your soup or stuffing, choose one. Or none. Nothing but salt and pepper is ever really indispensable. Substitute water for canned stock in a soup; use a slurry of flour and water to thicken your pan gravy rather than making turkey stock. Instead of investing in a can of shortening for a piecrust, substitute butter for the two tablespoons needed in the recipe. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that the whole really is much more than the parts. Cut corners where you have to and all anyone will notice in the end is a heaping plate. Make It a Potluck Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. People are happy to pitch in and bring a dish or two and potlucks are trendy right now. Wine is not included in the budget here, so be open

THE THANKSGIVING TURKEY Of all the Thanksgiving symbols, the turkey has become the most well known. The wild turkey is native to northern Mexico and the eastern United States. The turkey has brown features with buff-colored feathers on the tips of the wing and on the tail. The male turkey is called a Tom and as with most birds, is bigger and has brighter and more colorful plumage. The female is called a Hen and is generally smaller and drab in color. The Tom turkey has a long wattle (a fleshy, wrinkled, brightly colored fold of skin hanging from the neck or throat) at the base of its bill and additional wattles on the neck, as well as a prominent tuft of bristles resembling a beard projecting downward from its chest. The turkey was originally domesticated in Mexico and was brought into Europe early in the 16th century. Since that time, turkeys have been extensively raised because of the excellent quality of their meat and eggs. Some of the common breeds of turkey in the United States are the Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland and Bourbon Red. Though there is no real evidence that turkey was served at the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving, in a book written by the Pilgrim’s Governor Bradford, he does make mention of wild turkeys. In a letter sent to England, another Pilgrim describes how the governor sent “four men out fowling” returning with turkeys, ducks and geese.

Have you cleaned out your fabric collection lately? A group of quilters from New Creation Church that meets with the Fulshear Community quilting ladies in the Bob Lutz library has a bargain for you! The ladies meet the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 1 PM and will take your excess fabric and sew it into beautiful ‘kid’ quilts. These comfort quilts will be distributed by the Fort Bend County Women’s Shelter and the clients of Katy Christian Ministries’ Domestic Abuse program. Baby quilts will also be sent to the Lutheran World Relief agency for use by victims of natural disasters and devastation from war. Check the closets of your families and friends. Recycle for a good cause! Fabric and colorful crochet yarn may be dropped in the Fulshear collection containers in the Bob Lutz Library during open hours and at the Irene Stern Community Center between 9 AM to 12 noon during the months of October and November.

Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. Museum of Dysfunction IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. Rome by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, work shopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 pm. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www.mildredsumbrella. com - info@mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

REAL SCIENCE...REAL RESULTS SG1 U12 GIRLS TEAM WINS LABOR DAY TOURNAMENT KATY TEAM GOES UNDEFEATED TO WIN 2013 HOUSTON LABOR DAY CUP Sports Group 1 (SG1) is proud to announce that our U12 girls team took first place in the 30th Annual Houston Labor Day Soccer Tournament held at Katy and Bear Creek Parks. “The ladies worked together, overcoming the heat, lack of substitutions and still remained without a loss throughout the three-day tournament, we are extremely proud of their efforts,” said SG1 Director, Mr. Alex Parra. Even more impressive was the fact that the team did not receive one goal against during the entire tournament. Fredy Sanguinetti, who prepared the girls for the rigors of multiple pressure packed games, coaches the team. Coach Fredy said “They played great and deserve that first place trophy.”

SURVIVING BLACK FRIDAY Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier: Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store email updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping. The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep. The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open and go to the store that has the best deals and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a halfhour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full - don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathonshopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds.

• Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. Make sure that when you cash in your rain check you are getting the price that the product was listed at for that day. www.kaboose.com

THANKSGIVING TRAVEL TIPS

A MapQuest poll regarding Thanksgiving traffic indicated that most people who travel by car for Thanksgiving, have more than an hour’s drive ahead of them and 25% have road trips that exceed 200 miles. With all those Thanksgiving travel cars on the road, traffic can get pretty messy. The busiest Thanksgiving travel days are Wednesday and Thursday. If your schedule allows, try to leave Tuesday. It feels early, sure, but nothing dampers the fun of a family holiday more than hours stuck in close quarters, as the highway - crowded with cars at a near standstill - stretches out interminably before you. And since you’ve started a day earlier than usual, you may then be able to avoid traffic jams post-Thanksgiving, by returning on Friday. The MapQuest poll suggests that Friday is the best day to return home for those traveling by car. Most people polled either leave Thursday night or stay for a long weekend.

The time of day with most cars on the road appears to be between 9 in the morning and 12 noon. It follows, then, that either leaving very early or in the afternoon, should also cut down a bit on your time spent sitting in traffic during Thanksgiving week. www.luxuryresorttravel.suite101.com

It is projected that there will be no tax rate increase from the current rate of $.40 with the $99 million authorization. The authorization of the bond referendum by voters would fund the building of three new Student Activity Facilities:

Nottingham Country November 2013

Agricultural Sciences Center - $25 million The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on Katy-Hockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution. STEM Project Center - $4.5 million The STEM Project Center will provide additional classroom and project space for students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and activities. It will provide increased space for students to conduct largescale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M. Center while students are viewing from their classroom.

14,000 Seat Stadium - $69.5 million A second stadium will address scheduling issues that will become increasingly difficult as future high schools are opened. Six Katy ISD high schools currently participate in varsity football, soccer and marching contests at Rhodes Stadium. With the opening of Tompkins High School, Katy ISD will schedule seven varsity football teams into Rhodes Stadium beginning in August of 2014. Scheduling seven schools in Rhodes Stadium will create a challenge for the District to comply with the U.I.L. 5-day rule. KATY ISD NEW WEBSITE HOMEPAGE LAUNCHED Dear Katy ISD Family, Katy ISD is proud to announce the launch of its new website homepage and the gradual transition of department and campus websites over the course of the fall semester. The new homepage is the culmination of a yearlong initiative to gather feedback and direction from parents, staff and other Katy stakeholders about how the District’s website could better serve our community’s needs. What emerged is a clean design, consistent and improved navigation, an upgrade to the technology that supports the site and quick acess to our most frequently visited District-wide webpages. Department pages and campus websites will be transitioned to the new homepage format during the fall semester. In the meantime, some department pages and all campus websites will be temporarily linked to the older version of the District’s website. Some examples of pages in which visitors will experience redirects to the old website are the Transportation, Teaching & Learning and Special Education pages. We greatly appreciate your patience as we continue to improve upon the website to make it a better experience for all who visit it. Wishing you a successful school year, Katy ISD Technology Department.

TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL

JET BAND MARCH-A-THON 2013

The James E Taylor Band would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for their continued support of the JET Band March-A-Thon held in August. We are simply overwhelmed with the success of this event. Once again, our neighbors lined the streets cheering and encouraging the band as they made their way through the 6 mile route in the heat of the summer. We played 23 concerts and accepted generous donations from the most supportive network of Taylor High School families we have ever seen. This year we were joined by Taylor High School administrators, teachers, KISD board members and Superintendent Alton Frailey, all marching side by side with the students in a sincere show of support. This event would not be possible without the generous support of our local sponsors. These companies have chosen to be a part of our mission to create the upcoming leaders though music education and investment in the future of the Taylor Band. Our sincere thanks to:
