Daylight Savings Time is on November 3rd. Please watch out for school children and report repeat speeders to the police. There are automobile accidents in the neighborhood every year that are preventable if drivers would please drive slowly and carefully through the neighborhood. Let us all help keep the streets of Westfield safe by being careful and aware drivers.
HOLIDAY LIGHT DECORATING CONTEST
The neighborhood enjoyed the holiday light decorating contest last year so much, that it is back for an encore. There will be six winners selected neighborhood-wide, with a $25 gift card to each of the winners. There were many beautiful displays last year and we look forward to seeing what talents and creativity the contestants bring to the contest this year. Contestants should keep in mind that yards should be clean and tidy and curbs and sidewalks swept in addition to the holiday decorations. Remember also, that a unified theme tends to look better than something that is not. Due to weather conditions and the availability of volunteers, there is no set date for the night selections will be made. If you are interested in entering the contest keep in mind that the judging will take place between December 6th and December 17th. Please keep your lights on until 10:00 PM as it takes a few hours for the volunteers to view the entire neighborhood. Thank you.
LADDER SAFETY
When I was watching an episode of Ask this Old House recently, they discussed and demonstrated ladder safety and I felt that would be a timely topic for our newsletter this month. Fall is a good time of year to make sure you are using the right ladder for the job and following all safety guidelines as you trim foliage, do home maintenance and put up holiday decorations. A few of the things you need to remember: • Choose the right ladder for the job you will be doing. • Never use a metal ladder when working on electrical or when you are working in conditions that have water in the area. • Never stand higher on the ladder than the manufacturer recommends. • The angle of the ladder is very important. Ladders should be at a 75 1/2 degree angle. • The ladder should be on a level surface. • Check your ladder carefully to make sure it is in good condition before using it. • Read, follow and understand all the manufacturers’ recommendations.

Please make sure to keep your sidewalk swept and clear of leaves, pine needles and any other obstructions. Leaves, pine needles especially, are very slippery and pose a very real hazard to pedestrians. Please protect yourself from liability and your neighbor and yourself from harm by frequently sweeping your sidewalk. Also, keep your curb at the street swept and clear to aid in rainwater drainage and to keep the sewers clear of debris, which helps prevent potential flooding. If you see trash in the street, please be a good neighbor and pick it up and dispose of it properly.

Please go outside tonight and check the streetlight in your yard if you are a homeowner that has a streetlight on their property. If the streetlight is not working, please go to the phone number or web page in the back of the newsletter (outages) and report it. Thank you.

The Westfield Board of Directors meets every third (3rd) Monday of each month except for the month of the annual meeting. Owners are invited to attend these meetings during the open forum session, but may be dismissed should the Board adjourn into Executive Session. It will ask you to provide an email address as well. After completing the process, you will receive a password (within 24 hours) that you can use for future logins. This site will give you access to the governing documents for the association as well as a way to pay your assessments online and submit ACC requests for improvements to your property. DEED RESTRICTION ENFORCEMENT
Deed restriction violations are recorded on monthly drive by inspections through all sections of Westfield. These are performed by Spectrum Association Management. Homeowners with violations are notified by a series of letters according the Deed Restriction Enforcement Policy. This Policy serves as procedure for Spectrum Association Management to follow. If you receive a letter, don’t take it as an insult or a call to battle. The worst action is to ignore the letter. If you have resolved the problem, need more time or circumstances do not allow you to resolve the problem at this time, notify Spectrum Association Management as per the instructions in the letter. If you wish to report a deed restriction violation in your neighborhood, please complete the form on the web Site.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA
• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

INGREDIENTS: 2 pounds mashed sweet potatoes 2 eggs 1 1/2 cups white sugar 1/4 cup butter 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk 1 cup crushed cornflakes cereal 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1/4 cup butter 2 tablespoons brown sugar DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray one 2-quart casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray. Combine the sweet potatoes, white sugar, 1/4 cup of the butter or margarine and the milk. Mix until well blended. Spoon sweet potato mixture into the prepare casserole dish. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 15 minutes. Combine the crushed cornflakes, pecans, remaining 1/4 cup butter or margarine, and brown sugar to taste. GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

KATY ISD BOARD CALLS FOR NOVEMBER BOND ELECTION
During the August Board work study meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees accepted a bond referendum recommendation by the Student Activity Facilities (SAF) Bond Committee and called for a Nov. 5th Bond election. It is projected that there will be no tax rate increase from the current rate of $.40 with the $99 million authorization. The authorization of the bond referendum by voters would fund the building of three new Student Activity Facilities: Agricultural Sciences Center - $25 million The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on Katy-Hockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution. STEM Project Center - $4.5 million The STEM Project Center will provide additional classroom and project space for students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and activities. It will provide increased space for students to conduct large-scale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M. Center while students are viewing from their classroom. 14,000 Seat Stadium - $69.5 million A second stadium will address scheduling issues that will become increasingly difficult as future high schools are opened. Six Katy ISD high schools currently participate in varsity football, soccer and marching contests at Rhodes Stadium. With the opening of Tompkins High School, Katy ISD will schedule seven varsity football teams into Rhodes Stadium beginning in August of 2014. Scheduling seven schools in Rhodes Stadium will create a challenge for the District to comply with the U.I.L. 5-day rule. KATY ISD NEW WEBSITE HOMEPAGE LAUNCHED
Katy ISD is proud to announce the launch of its new website homepage and the gradual transition of department and campus websites over the course of the fall semester. The new homepage is the culmination of a yearlong initiative to gather feedback and direction from parents, staff and other Katy stakeholders about how the District’s website could better serve our community’s needs. What emerged is a clean design, consistent and improved navigation, an upgrade to the technology that supports the site and quick acess to our most frequently visited District-wide webpages. Department pages and campus websites will be transitioned to the new homepage format during the fall semester. In the meantime, some department pages and all campus websites will be temporarily linked to the older version of the District’s website. Some examples of pages in which visitors will experience redirects to the old website are the Transportation, Teaching & Learning and Special Education pages. We greatly appreciate your patience as we continue to improve upon the website to make it a better experience for all who visit it. Mayde Creek High School’S FBLA chapter received the Hollis and Kitty Guy Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit for the State of Texas. Only two schools from each state receive this award for their overall campus involvement and community service projects throughout the school year. Our community service projects helped bring awareness to the public’s needs and raised money for the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.
