November 2013 COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH, 7:00 AM - 12 NOON

It’s almost time again to clean out your closets for our Fall community-wide garage sale. You won’t have to haul your items far; the garage sale will take place in YOUR OWN garage! Just be ready to open your garage at 7AM on November 9th. To help increase traffic to your home, we suggest that you place signs at the end of your street. Don’t forget to take them down afterwards. We’ll be creating a map of all the garage sales in the community. To be added to the map, please email your address to mevrard@canyongate.com and include a short list (five words or less) of the types of items you are selling. No additions will be accepted after Wednesday, November 6th. The maps will be handed out at the onsite office located at SplashPad Texas the day of the event. If interested in donating garage sale items, please contact Katy’s Guardian Angels at 281-745-4475 or Purple Heart at 713-685-5400.

HOLIDAY YARD DECORATING CONTEST DECEMBER 8TH - 14TH

We will be having our annual “Holiday Yard Decorating Contest” during the week of Sunday, December 8th through Saturday, December 14th. No formal registration is required. Participants need to only keep their Christmas lights on every night during that week. One winner will be chosen from each section. Winners will receive a prize and a “Holiday Yard Contest Winner” sign to display in the front of their homes during the month of December. If you would like to help with judging, please contact Michelle at mevrard@canyongate.com or 713-783-6702. It will take at most an hour of your time to drive through your assigned section.

COOKIES WITH SANTA & TOYS FOR TOTS DRIVE SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7TH, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Take your photo with Jolly St. Nick as we welcome in the Holiday Season! Located at the Westheimer Lakes North Clubhouse, we’ll be serving holiday treats & entertainment for children young & old! Don’t forget your camera! We’re hosting a Toys for Tots Toy Drive! If you’d like to contribute, please bring a NEW, UNWRAPPED toy to the Westheimer Lakes North Clubhouse.

Happy Thanksgiving!

If each person did their own part (around the outside of their home including their little stretch of street in front of their house), what a better place this would be to live! A clean environment/neighborhood makes people feel good about themselves. They will keep it clean. Some need to be reminded. Others need to be continually reminded. It takes time to change habits. Keeping your neighborhood clean is a habit that takes conscious effort.

ANIMAL / PET CONTROL

Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space… remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not be allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined.

LET US KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOODS LITTER FREE!

Take responsibility for yourself and be a good neighbor! Keep our streets and neighborhood trash and litter free! Make it a habit, be a good neighbor and do your part!

To report loose dogs and cats, please call Ft. Bend Animal Control: 281-342-1512.

GOLF BALLS

Hitting golf balls is meant for the golf course only. It can cause damage not only to personal property but to people as well. Please respect your neighbors and refrain from hitting golf balls inside the community.

NO TRESPASSING ON RESIDENTS PRIVATE PROPERTY

There have been complaints about children crossing through residents’ private yards to get to the facilities. Please let children know that they cannot cross private property. If this should occur more than once, we ask homeowners’ to contact the proper authorities.

BASKETBALL GOALS

Basketball is a fun sport that many like to play. As a reminder, please make sure that all basketball goals are kept in an upright position in your driveway. Basketball goals should not be left in the street at anytime or left on the side of your home when not in use. Leaving Basketball goals in the street can be a nuisance to drivers in the community and a hazard should there be a need for an emergency vehicle to gain access to your street. Please note this is also a violation of deed restrictions and if you receive violation letters regarding this matter you could be sent to the attorney and be liable for those charges.

NO DUMPING IN EMPTY LOTS

Please help us keep our community clean by NOT DUMPING trash and debris onto empty lots. Neighbors please report violators and be ready to provide license plate number and photo or any other pertinent information.

Sports Group 1 (SG1) is proud to announce that our U12 girls team took first place in the 30th Annual Houston Labor Day Soccer Tournament held at Katy and Bear Creek Parks. “The ladies worked together, overcoming the heat, lack of substitutions and still remained without a loss throughout the three-day tournament, we are extremely proud of their efforts,” said SG1 Director, Mr. Alex Parra.

Not Cooling or Not Heating

Even more impressive was the fact that the team did not receive one goal against during the entire tournament. Fredy Sanguinetti, who prepared the girls for the rigors of multiple pressure packed games, coaches the team. Coach Fredy said “They played great and deserve that first place trophy.”

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA • The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the

Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast. MPL#37282

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER • Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply.

• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

The new homepage is the culmination of a yearlong initiative to gather feedback and direction from parents, staff and other Katy stakeholders about how the District’s website could better serve our community’s needs. What emerged is a clean design, consistent and improved navigation, an upgrade to the technology that supports the site and quick acess to our most frequently visited District-wide webpages. Department pages and campus websites will be transitioned to the new homepage format during the fall semester. In the meantime, some department pages and all campus websites will be temporarily linked to the older version of the District’s website. Some examples of pages in which visitors will experience redirects to the old website are the Transportation, Teaching & Learning and Special Education pages. We greatly appreciate your patience as we continue to improve upon the website to make it a better experience for all who visit it. Wishing you a successful school year, Katy ISD Technology Department.

STOP THAT BARKING! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electricshock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a midday visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

Life is a journey meant to be shared.

Come join us on The Way.

21218 Kingsland Blvd., Katy, Texas 77450 community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as ou do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community

34

of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

YOUR HEALTH NOW! LOW FAT, HIGH TASTE THANKSGIVING! Let the eating festival begin! Mashed potatoes WITH gravy, buttery biscuits, ooey gooey pecan pie, fried turkey, all the trimmings and THEN some. Sounds like your traditional Thanksgiving holiday menu? You CAN eat all your favorite foods low fat and with high taste this holiday season! Here’s how: • When making rue, use skim milk with a cholesterol free spread, like Smart Balance. • If a recipe calls for cream, use skim milk. It tastes just the same. • Mashed potatoes are a must, but use half potato-half boiled cauliflower. It will be tasty AND you will get essential vitamins. • Skip the fatty dips with your fruit and veggie platters. Presentation is everything. Make your platters creative and if these dips are a must: make homemade dips. • Green bean casseroles are the tradition, so use low or no sodium soup, freshly boiled and chopped green beans, skim milk, a dash of fresh pepper and you can still afford the French fried onions! • Love the pies? Make your own low fat pie crust from scratch. The ready-made crusts are made with shortening and other unnecessary preservatives and additives.
