THANKSGIVING TRIVIA
• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin).

• On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.
GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does

not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

THANKSGIVING ON A BUDGET With the economy still slumping, a lavish Thanksgiving might not be on the table this year. But we can still and should - feast. We just have to squeeze our fistful of dollars a little harder. Go for What’s in Season When planning your meal, first consult the calendar. This is no time for asparagus and artichokes. Buy produce in season and you will get much more for your money, not to mention livelier flavors. Brussels sprouts are at their peak in late November; farmers’ markets should have them in huge quantities, still on their stalks. (Serving them sliced rather than whole not only makes them more tantalizing but also helps them go further.) Fresh herbs have become available all year round, so it can be a better deal to buy a bunch rather than an expensive jar of the dried kind - fresh sage might be $1.99 compared with $6.50 for half an ounce dried, which could go stale by the next time you need it. Buy a Supermarket Bird In an ideal world we would all be eating heritage turkeys. They have outstanding texture and flavor and when we buy them, we help preserve unique breeds. But they are anything but a bargain: A 12 to 14 pound bird, which feeds eight, from Heritage Foods USA goes for $159 including shipping or more than $10 a pound. Supermarket turkeys can be fine alternatives

for less than $2 a pound. Just be sure to buy a freerange or organic turkey rather than an industrial one injected with flavored oil. Plus, brining will add flavor and improve texture in even the least expensive birds, all for about $2.29 for a big box of kosher salt, an ingredient that can be used to season the rest of the meal. Start From Scratch Some convenience foods are often ridiculously cheap, loaded as they are with high-fructose corn syrup and chemicals, yet they rarely taste better than homemade. To cut costs and ensure the tastiest of feasts, make your own piecrust, cranberry sauce and gravy rather than opening up a box or can. Instead of paying $8 for a single loaf from an artisanal bakery, bake up some dinner rolls with yeast, butter and flour for a little over $7. A bakery-bought pecan pumpkin pie can go for upwards of $50, but a homemade version will run you $15 and $5 less if you omit the pecans. Know When to Buy Canned or Frozen Some canned and frozen foods are fine alternatives to fresh. Canned pumpkin is one of the great American ingredients and the generic brands are as good as premium labels. You could make a pie using a fresh pumpkin for $5, but you would wind up with a more watery filling than one made from a $2.49 can. And frozen vegetables can be both superior to and cheaper than out-of-season fresh ones; a bag of Cascadian Farms flash-frozen baby peas is $2.69, compared with $3.99 a pound or more for fresh snow peas, the only kind you are likely to find in November. Don’t Be a Slave to a Recipe If you don’t want to spring for three kinds of herbs in your soup or stuffing, choose one. Or none. Nothing but salt and pepper is ever really indispensable. Substitute water for canned stock in a soup; use a slurry of flour and water to thicken your pan gravy rather than making turkey stock. Instead of investing in a can of shortening for a piecrust, substitute butter for the two tablespoons needed in the recipe. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that the whole really is much more than the parts. Cut corners where you have to and all anyone will notice in the end is a heaping plate. Make It a Potluck Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. People are happy to pitch in and bring a dish or two and potlucks are trendy right now. Wine is not included in the budget here, so be open about suggesting a suitablefor-turkey California Zinfandel, like Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull, which is less than $10. www.epicurious.com

10 REASONS TO BE THANKFUL FOR YOUR KIDS
Parenthood is like twenty years of survival training. You learn to imagine the worst. Did you pack the diapers, wipes and extra clothes? Have you planned for any disaster? Who needs TV and movies with children around? They make your life less boring. For ten silly reasons to be thankful for your kids, see my list of suggestions below: 1. Money - If you had too much money, you’d get into trouble. Children help you spend it. I ate all the food. My shoes are too small. It’s pizza day at school! 2. Quality Control - Is your bed well made? Are you doors well hinged? With kids, you’ll always know. They’re like quality control testers for all of your things. The spindle came off the railing! 3. Immune System - Who needs a flu shot with children around? They keep your immune system working. They bring germs home from school and spread them around. I want a hug and kiss! 4. Silly - What better excuse could you have to act silly? Parents can run through the sprinkler. They can try out new toys and play video games. I bought it for the kids! 5. Garbage - Don’t buy a garbage disposal, just have kids! They eat everything in sight. They’ll make rockets from boxes and phones out of cans. Trash is better than toys!
Williamsburg Area News
6. Mind - Kids make you think on your feet. They keep your mind sharp. Why? Why? Why? Parents make up nonsense just to shut their kids up. The sky is blue because... 7. Skills - Kids hone your skills for almost everything. They teach you how to organize. You get to practice negotiating on a daily basis. I’ll give you a piece of candy! 8. Exercise - Becoming a parent is better than joining the gym. Kids make you chase them around. You’re constantly cleaning and packing and lugging their things. Mommy, I want to play tag! 9. Self-Esteem - Mommy, you’re beautiful. You’re a really good singer. Kids give daily compliments. Even when you know they’re wrong, it makes you feel good. You could win American Idol! 10. Embarrassing - After having children, you won’t get embarrassed. They make you less self-conscious. Kids leave the house wearing two pairs of pants. Is that snot or puke on your shirt? After having children, nothing seems loud. Kids make lots of noise. Who knew having a shower could feel like a luxury? I got a full night sleep! Who knew reading the paper for five whole minutes could feel like a gift from above? Having children can make you appreciate life. Be thankful for your kids!

(Revised 8/13) Over the past couple of months, we have attempted to contact all the teens on our jobseeker list. Many have not responded and this is a final attempt to get a response. If you have not spoken to us by phone or answered our email, you will be removed from the list until you contact us.

During the August Board work study meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees accepted a bond referendum recommendation by the Student Activity Facilities (SAF) Bond Committee and called for a Nov. 5th Bond election. It is projected that there will be no tax rate increase from the current rate of $.40 with the $99 million authorization. The authorization of the bond referendum by voters would fund the building of three new Student Activity Facilities:

Agricultural Sciences Center - $25 million The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on Katy-Hockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution. STEM Project Center - $4.5 million The STEM Project Center will provide additional classroom and project space for students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and activities. It will provide increased space for students to conduct large-scale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M. Center while students are viewing from their classroom. 14,000 Seat Stadium - $69.5 million A second stadium will address scheduling issues that will become increasingly difficult as future high schools are opened. Six Katy ISD high schools currently participate in varsity football, soccer and marching contests at Rhodes Stadium. With the opening of Tompkins High School, Katy ISD will schedule seven varsity football teams into Rhodes Stadium beginning in August of 2014. Scheduling seven schools in Rhodes Stadium will create a challenge for the District to comply with the U.I.L. 5-day rule. For more information about the StudentActivity Facilities bond package, visit www.katyisd.org/facilities/Pages/2013FacilitiesProposal.aspx.
KATY ISD NEW WEBSITE HOMEPAGE LAUNCHED
Katy ISD is proud to announce the launch of its new website homepage and the gradual transition of department and campus websites over the course of the fall semester. The new homepage is the culmination of a yearlong initiative to gather feedback and direction from parents, staff and other Katy stakeholders about how the District’s website could better serve our community’s needs. What emerged is a clean design, consistent and improved navigation, an upgrade to the technology that supports the site and quick acess to our most frequently visited District-wide webpages. Department pages and campus websites will be transitioned to the new homepage format during the fall semester. In the meantime, some department pages and all campus websites will be temporarily linked to the older version of the District’s website. Some examples of pages in which visitors will experience redirects to the old website are the Transportation, Teaching & Learning and Special Education pages. We greatly appreciate your patience as we continue to improve upon the website to make it a better experience for all who visit it. Wishing you a successful school year, Katy ISD Technology Department.

Theater/Fine Arts CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, work shopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www.mildredsumbrella.com - info@ mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

A Note About Us
Krenek Printing Company has been serving the Northwest Houston and Katy areas with subdivision newsletters since 1979. Krenek Printing is a family owned and operated business which prides itself in providing a venue to the residents in the form of a personalized subdivision newsletter. Residents of the communities we serve receive a monthly newsletter ďŹ lled with information provided by their management company, civic association board, community groups/clubs, libraries, schools, scouts, and much, much more. There is also space provided for important numbers and ACC form. Articles are sent to Krenek Printing by contacts from the above groups. This venue is an excellent, cost free way of keeping everyone informed. Krenek Printing does not charge the residents or the management company for this service. The newsletter is solely supported by the advertising found within each newsletter. Advertisers who support your newsletter are local businesses that service you every day in many ways. Owners from many of these businesses may live within your subdivision. Many goods or services you are in need of may be found right in your newsletter. Please support these businesses, as they support your subdivision by advertising. When soliciting for any service, always get references from the business itself and/or the BBB. Krenek Printing does not screen each individual business. Your Newsletter is as effective as the neighborhood makes it. If they provide informative and interesting news, then it will be passed on to you in a pleasant, attractive, personalized subdivision newsletter. We, at Krenek Printing, will continue working with you and providing your subdivision with the best monthly newsletter possible. 7102 Glen Chase Ct. Houston, TX 77095 281-463-8649
