STAYING POSITIVE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but all too often we find ourselves feeling stressed out rather than joyful this time of year. Though the holiday season can be stressful at times, it is important to remember the true reason for the season and to stay positive. It seems year after year Thanksgiving is the kickoff to a season of greed and discontentment. Just hours after finishing the Thanksgiving meal, people rush out to begin the frenzy of holiday shopping, overspending, and complaining. So many people spend the holidays comparing themselves to others and are disappointed when they feel like they don’t measure up to those around them. We complain about the lack of square footage and not enough oven space while preparing a feast for our families, meanwhile forgetting that millions of people are going to bed hungry and homeless each night. One excellent way to stay positive during the holiday season is to get involved with a local charity. Whether you spend a day feeding the homeless or giving out toys to local children, seeing how other people live will open your eyes to how truly fortunate you are. Getting the entire family involved can be a wonderful learning opportunity for children. Seeing so many kids who don’t get presents makes it awfully hard to complain about not getting exactly what you wanted on Christmas morning. Another key practice to staying positive is to stop comparing yourself to others. Everyone has a different idea of how the holidays should be. Don’t feel disheartened when your family doesn’t decorate as elaborately as the house next door. After all, happiness is not related to the size of your Christmas tree or the number of presents under it.

Remember the true meaning of the season and don’t get overwhelmed by the details associated with this time of year. The heart of the holidays is love and peace. Rather than getting stressed out by holiday traffic, long lines at the mall, or maxing out your credit card, focus on showing love and compassion to the people around you. When you do this, you can’t help but enjoy the holiday season. Source: cphblog.com

HOLIDAY SHOPPING SAFETY TIPS

Shopping during the holiday season can present unique danger. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season joyous. The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips from the Los Angeles Police Department Crime Prevention Section can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season. 1. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. 2. Dress casually and comfortably. 3. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. 4. Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible. 5. Always carry your driver’s license or identification along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use. 6. Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings. 7. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. 8. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible. 9. Keep cash in your front pocket. 10. Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused. 11. Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

NATIONAL UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER DAY - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18TH

Have the holidays let you down? Do you feel like the magic and mystique of Christmas has faded with maturity and age? Well fear not my fine friends. National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day is here to save you. National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day is a day of light hearted fun and a day to be yourself and not that buttoned up corporate version of yourself you have grown to despise. Most importantly, National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day is a day to make the holidays fun... the way they were intended to be! So this National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day, leave the school uniform at home, keep the preppy office blouse in your closet and whatever you do, don’t even think about taking your suit to work. All you need to wear is your ugly Christmas sweater because this is your day, this is our day, this is National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

If we do not hear back from you after 3 tries, we will remove you from the list until we do. Must have parent(s) permission to be on the Job Seekers List.

DISCLAIMER Neither the subdivision, nor Krenek Printing is responsible for those listed on the Teenage Job Seeker List. BARKER TEENAGE JOB SEEKERS LIST

• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.

The day after hearing this special parable, first grade classes enjoyed a fun field trip to Dewberry Farm. The best part of the day was a visit to the pumpkin patch so each child could pick out a pumpkin to bring home as a special reminder of the “Pumpkin Patch Gospel.”

Shalom Cypress was established in 2011 by local families seeking a Jewish presence in Northwest Houston. We are the closest synagogue within 25 miles of the nearest synagogue. Many thought that they were the only Jews in the Cypress area, but it turns out that they were wrong! Shalom Cypress has grown to more than 30 affiliated families. Shalom Cypress Hebrew School is now open for enrollment for the Spring 2016 year. This upcoming year Morah Rina is going to concentrate on conversational Hebrew with the children. Bar/Bat Mitzvah programs are also available. A special Mazel Tov to Jordan Loeb on her Bat Mitzvah! She did a wonderful job reading from the Torah. Our community is very proud of her. For this upcoming month, please see below our upcoming event schedule for this month: December 11th & December 12th: Services will be held Friday evening and Saturday morning. Rabbi Rami will lead the services. Each service is followed by dinner & lunch respectively. December 12th: Hanukkah Celebration. Traditional songs, dreidels, lots of latkes and more fun. Don’t forget to bring your own Menorah and candles so we can all light them together! December 3rd, 10th and 17th: Our weekly coffee night is held each Thursday night. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club will conduct FREE vision screening to children from six months of age and older at the Jersey Village Holiday in the Park, to be held Sunday December 6th, from 1-4 PM at Clark Henry Park. This vision screening uses a unique special camera that takes a photo of the child’s eyes and within seconds relates a pass or refer status. Those with the refer status will need to have a professional eye examination at a local optometrist. Vision problems are the leading disability in children, who are unaware that they cannot see properly. They cannot compare their vision to others and vision problems do not cause pain or inflammation, so parents, teachers and caregivers are unaware that the child has visual difficulties. Eighty percent of learning is visual. The Houston Cy-Fair Lions Club has recently purchased the Plusoptix Vision Screener for this community service project. This is part of a nationwide KidSight initiative through Lions Clubs International to screen children early for vision problems. Please bring your
