PARENTS’ DAY

Kids, don’t forget that July 26th is Parents’ Day! Make sure to let your parents know how much you appreciate them and maybe you could do something special that day to help out. Some ideas are: make a card telling them why you think they are such wonderful parents, clean your room without being told, help clean the table after dinner (if you are old enough, make dinner), help watch your younger siblings so mom and dad can get a break.

SUMMER TIME ENERGY-SAVING TIPS

These tips are designed to help you choose effective ways to reduce your energy bills. Some measures may not be relevant depending on climate, the age of your home and appliances and past improvements made to your home. Fast and Free The average home spends hundreds of dollars a year on energy costs. But you can lower your energy bills and help save the environment at the same time! Be a speedy chef • Nothing is more energy efficient for cooking than your microwave. It uses two-thirds less energy than your stove. Push a button to wash your dishes • Surprise! Your dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes by hand. Then let dishes air-dry to save even more! Fill up the fridge • Having lots of food in your fridge keeps it from warming up too fast when the door is open. So your fridge doesn’t have to work as hard to stay cool. Cutting back unnecessary energy use is an easy way to reduce energy consumption while saving money. Here are some additional suggestions you can do at home, at absolutely no cost to you. Turn up your thermostat Set your thermostat to 78 degrees when you are home and 85 degrees or off when you are away. Using ceiling or room fans allows you to set the thermostat higher because the air movement will cool the room. Always take into account health considerations and be sure to drink plenty of fluids in warm weather. (Save: 1 - 3 percent per degree, for each degree the thermostat is set above 72 degrees)

Use your appliances wisely To help prevent electricity outages, avoid running your appliances during peak hours, from 4 PM to 6 PM or anytime an electricity emergency is declared. • Do your laundry efficiently by using the warm or cold water setting for washing your clothes. Always use cold water to rinse clothes. (Save: 4 percent) • Line dry clothes whenever you can. When you need to use the dryer, run full loads, use the moisture-sensing setting and clean the clothes dryer lint trap after each use. • Conserve energy by running your dishwasher only when it is fully loaded and turn off the dry cycle and air-dry dishes instead. Operating swimming pool filters and cleaning sweeps efficiently • Reduce the operating time of your pool filter and automatic cleaning sweep to four to five hours and only during off-peak time. Eliminate wasted energy • Turn off appliances, lights and equipment when not in use (save: 2%). • Unplug electronic devices and chargers when they aren’t in use-most new electronics use electricity even when switched “off.” Turn computers and printers off at the power strip. • Unplug and recycle that spare refrigerator in the garage if you don’t really need it. Inexpensive Energy Solutions Make a quick trip to your local hardware store to purchase inexpensive energy-saving toos and equipment. Replace air conditioner filters Dirty filters restrict airflow and can cause the system to run longer, increasing energy use. Replace filters monthly for maximum benefit.

ENERGY STAR® compact fluorescent bulbs. For example, install compact fluorescent bulbs or LED bulbs in your porch light if you leave it on overnight. • Buy ENERGY STAR® certified torchieres. • Install an ENERGY STAR® programmable thermostat (save: 1 - 3 percent). Good Energy Saving Investments Planning to do some remodeling soon? Time to replace old appliances? Consider these energy efficiency suggestions when you make purchases. Install a whole house fan A whole house fan is permanently installed in your attic and draws cool air into your home through the windows while forcing hot air out through your attic vents. Use after sundown when the outside temperature drops below 80 degrees and in the early morning to cool your house and help reduce your air conditioning use. Install window shading Install patio covers, awnings and solar window screens to shade your home from the sun. For additional future savings, use strategically planted trees, shrubs and vines to shade your home. Solar control window films applied to existing glass in windows and doors is an effective method to reduce peak demand during hot months and conserve energy anytime air conditioning might be required. In addition to the energy management benefits, the use of these films can also reduce exposure to ultraviolet radiation and reduce glare. Visit the International Window Film Association for more information. Invest in a new air-conditioning unit If your air conditioner is on the way out, buy an ENERGY STAR® air conditioner (save: up to 10 percent).

Plug your home’s leaks Weather-strip, seal and caulk leaky doors and windows and install foam gaskets behind outlet covers.

Seal your ducts Leaking ductwork accounts for 25 percent of cooling costs in an average home, so have your ducts tested and have any leaks or restrictions repaired by a qualified contractor. Note: duct cleaning is not the same as duct sealing. As of October 1, 2005, if you install a new central air conditioner or furnace, your ducts will have to be inspected.

Choose ENERGY STAR® products • Buy ENERGY STAR® certified table lamps and light fixtures and replace your incandescent light bulbs that are used more than two hours per day with

Replace your refrigerator with an ENERGY STAR® model Refrigerators with a top or bottom freezer design can save you an additional 2-3% on your bill compared to a side-by-side design.

Home Maintenance and Repair

No job is too small.

GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY

• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CCS STUDENTS VOLUNTEER FOR ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION Cypress Christian middle school students Avery Smith and Maddie Beckmeier and their moms volunteered in downtown Houston at the Arthritis Foundation’s annual community fundraising 5K walk event. They organized t-shirts, assisted with the registration process and set up the food tables. Once the race was underway, Avery and Maddie assisted the participants at the first mile maker, giving direction and cheering them on. They rounded out their volunteer service by assisting various sponsors in breaking down booths and cleaning up the grounds along the Buffalo Bayou Trail. Avery and Maddie said they enjoyed making a difference in the lives of those who suffer from arthritis by doing what the Lord calls them to do - serve! 1 Peter 4:10 says: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others…”

The Cypress-Fairbanks ISD Board of Trustees approved a resolution to continue the residence homestead exemptions for CFISD residents for the 2015 tax year during the regularly scheduled Board meeting on May 11th. For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist Church, Beck and Masten Automotive, Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Copperfield Church, Crossbridge Church, Cy-Fair Kiwanis Club, Deerfield Village HOA, LDS Bear Creek and Copperfield Wards, Middlegate Village HOA, Peace Community Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and Thornton Middle School. CORNERSTONE UMC LAUNCHES SUMMER SHOE DRIVE!

Cornerstone United Methodist Church is conducting a shoe collection drive, which will run until the end of July to raise funds for our family life center. We will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will be utilized towards the costs associated with our family life center. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at Cornerstone United Methodist Church located at 18081 West Road. You can bring your donations by MondayThursday 9 AM-4 PM or contact the church office to schedule a time to pick up the shoes. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER REMAINING 2015 SEASON EXPLORING LIFE, LOVE & LAUGHTER

www.CAREYDENTISTRY.com

The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th mainstage season, which explores life, love and laughter through timeless musicals, zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a Shakespearean comedy. 2015 • Shakespeare - comes to life, June 12th - July 5th with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The canon’s most enchanted comedy pursues love with calculated abandon! This story of mortal and immortal paramours set in a mythical forest is one that will cast a spell on lovers of all ages. • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American. All performances are on the HFAC Garza Mainstage, recently named “Houston’s Best Gem of a Theatre” by the Houston Press, except for Peter Pan, which will be performed at the Berry Center.
