GIVING THANKS

Thanksgiving is approaching in the U.S. It’s a day that reminds us how much we truly have to be thankful for. With all of life’s hurriedness and angst, it’s so easy to forget the many blessings we’ve been given. Doesn’t it sometimes seem like such a stretch when assigning ourselves the task of listing our blessings; that for which we should be appreciative? Personally, I always have to think really hard, then I feel a sense of embarrassment because I know I’m trying to look for all the “extra-special” things, and unintentionally forgetting the “regular” things. So, just what can/should we be grateful for? By the way, in – what I call the “politically correct” aspect of the world of personal development, sometimes the use of the word “should” is discouraged. I don’t agree (of course, that doesn’t discount the fact I could be wrong); in my opinion, there are certain “shoulds” in life, and one is “gratitude.” Being grateful for what we have is a key to happiness. The Talmud asks, “Who is rich?” then answers, “That person who rejoices in their lot.” Let’s look at just a few things which “rate” gratitude, or gratefulness: Comfortable shelter. A job or career that satisfies you (not that you can’t strive for more, while still appreciating what you have), while paying you enough to feed yourself, and any other mouths for which you are responsible. A vehicle which takes you from point A to point B. Clothes that keep you warm. A spouse or significant other you love and who loves you. Family members you love and who love you. Those are really good. Let’s dig a bit deeper: Eyes out of which you can see, from your loved one in front of you, to the magnificence of a sunrise/ sunset, to the deep green grass to the majestically beautiful mountain. Ears out of which you can hear, from your child saying, “I love you,” to your dog barking, to anyone telling you hello, to the music playing (even loud, obnoxious music that isn’t your type). A mouth out of which you can communicate after using your mind to first reason out what you’re going to say :-), from telling someone you love, “I love you,” to warning someone to look out for the banana peel, to sharing a funny story, to offering much needed advice to someone who has come to you for help. Legs with which you can walk, fingers with which you can touch and feel, and arms with which you can hug. Let’s go to even more of a micro level: You know that cup of coffee you enjoyed this morning, or might even be enjoying now? There’s a lot to appreciate there, as well. Of course, it probably just tastes incredibly good. But, more so, how did it come to be that you could even have it there to enjoy? Find us on FACEBOOK for more news & events! Well, first it had to be grown somewhere. Then, cultivated. Then shipped. Then blended. Then transported. Then, transported again. Finally, it was in the store where you either bought it in a can or bag, or it was already brewed for you. And, anything you put into the coffee to enhance your level of enjoyment from it had to go through a similar process. Then, you got to taste it…the warmth, the richness, the flavor, the incredible feeling of simply enjoying a cup of coffee while at your computer or perhaps reading your newspaper. While you’re at it, take a moment to also appreciate all the work from different people and places that went into the producing of the newspaper and/or the computer. It’s almost overwhelming how much there is for which to be grateful! How do we apply this appreciation in our dealing with others? So often we become angry at the difficult person whose bad attitude makes our life difficult. If we can look at this person, however, with total appreciation for what they are; a fellow child of our Creator, a human being doing the best they can based on their knowledge, upbringing, circumstances and way of seeing the world, we can have a whole new respect and level of appreciation for that person and what they represent. Even if what they represent to us is simply a learning experience from which we can grow to be a better, more understanding, and more effective person ourselves. And guess what? Appreciation for everything we’ve discussed, and much more, is not limited to one day of Thanksgiving. We can practice the “skill” of appreciation as much as we want to, every single day. Try it for just 21 days straight – it will change your life! So, this Thanksgiving, enjoy the food, the company, and even the day off from work. But, more than anything, appreciate the fact that you have so much to appreciate… and appreciate that. Source: http://www.burg.com/2010/11/giving-thanksthanksgiving-article/

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA

• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots.

• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

November has been designated National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and it is about time we recognize the 5 million Americans living with this disease and the 10 million family caregivers that make it possible. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that attacks brain cells diminishing a person’s memory and becoming fatal over time. It impairs memory, thinking and behavior and is responsible for more than 50 percent of all dementia cases. The onset of symptoms most often develops slowly and worsen over time, until they become severe enough to interfere with daily life. The fear of Alzheimer’s may be in part due to the fact that there is no cure and the treatments that exist for Alzheimer’s are not extremely effective in slowing the progression of the disease. Current drugs for Alzheimer’s help to subdue the symptoms for only half of those who try them and on average, the drugs are only effective for a year. In support of families everywhere who are fighting this disease, consider stepping in and helping out by becoming an advocate, making a donation to Alzheimer’s research or by offering support to a patient or family caregiver.

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN KINDERGARTENERS ENJOY UMBRELLA PARADE Kindergarteners at Cypress Christian School learned about short vowel sounds. They enjoyed learning through hands-on activities and special projects to complement their curriculum. They also enjoyed a very special Umbrella Parade to celebrate the letter “u.” All four Kindergarten classes paraded through the elementary hallways and out onto the playground with their umbrellas high in the air. As they marched, they made the short “u” sound. Learning phonics is fun!

GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY

Copper Creek Meadows Community invited troops at all levels to send representatives to our first Girl Planning Board meeting for the year. Girls were asked to present their ideas for events they would like to see held by our Community. They had lots of great ideas! Thank you to all the girls who attended for their suggestions. Girl planning is an important aspect of Girl Scouting and one that began with our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, back in 1912. Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday was on October 31st and many troops celebrate that day with a birthday party or other special event in her honor. A Brownie Try-it dance workshop was hosted by two Cadette Girl Scouts from troop 14289 in October. The Cadettes are members of the Girl Scout Green Starlettes dance and drill team. They held the event as part of their Silver Award project. They will be purchasing new toys for patients at Texas Children’s Hospital. Troop 113017 attended the Compassion Experience at Copperfield Church. Using iPod and head sets, the girls were able to participate in an interactive journey through the daily lives of children in the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Uganda and India This helped them to experience other cultures and better understand the impact of poverty in the developing world. The junior “Flowers” badge workshop held at the LSC-Lone Star College in October attracted area Girl Scouts to learn more about this subject. Brownie Girl Scouts will have their chance at the “Brownie Bugs” Badge workshop scheduled in November.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high selfesteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
