Millions of people have difficulty reading. That’s because, despite what many people think, literacy issues are not just relegated to children and young adults. To improve literacy in America, we must consider readers of all ages and backgrounds. Here are some tips to help you improve and encourage reading and literacy. Here’s How: 1. Read books every day and let people see you do it. You may be a role model (to your child, your niece or nephew or some other individual in your family or circle of acquaintances). 2. Get involved with your local library. Many libraries offer literacy programs, which encourage reading in your community. See what you can do to help. 3. Talk about reading. Ask questions about what the individuals in your life are reading.
SEVEN STRATEGIES FOR SAVING

After necessities such as food, clothing and housing, there can be little left to put aside for future goals. Unfortunately, failing to save could mean the difference between enjoying a comfortable retirement and giving up some basic needs. Often it is a matter of making the decision to begin saving now in order to buy a new home or car later. The goals you set are important to you. Making changes to prepare for those goals can make a difference. • Don’t splurge with your tax refund. Instead of spending your refund, use it wisely by paying down debt, funding an individual retirement account or saving it for future financial goals. • Take full advantage of your employer’s retirement contributions. Your employer may match a percentage of the contributions you make to your retirement savings plan. It’s a good idea to do what it takes to get the matching limit. It’s free money that can really help your bottom line during retirement. • Start small and stay steady. The first word is the most important - start. You should begin as early as possible to get the most out of your savings plan. • Pay yourself first. Think of your savings or investments as a bill you must pay on a regular basis, much the same as a car or mortgage payment. Be disciplined and make the payments according to a set schedule. For better results, establish an automatic monthly deduction from your paycheck or checking account to fund an investment or savings account. • Create separate pots of savings for upcoming life stages. Retirement may be an important goal for which to begin saving, but other goals or events need as much or more preparation. Don’t short-change other goals while concentrating on one thing. Whether it’s a home, car or child’s education, it is important to give appropriate attention to each.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

CHEESY ACORN SQUASH INGREDIENTS: 1 acorn squash, halved and seeded 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup diced celery 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 teaspoon chopped parsley 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place squash cut side down in a glass dish. Cook in microwave for 20 minutes on HIGH, until almost tender.

FOUR CHEESE MARGHERITA PIZZA INGREDIENTS: 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 8 Roma tomatoes, sliced 2 (12 inch) pre-baked pizza crusts 8 ounces shredded Mozzarella cheese 4 ounces shredded Fontina cheese 10 fresh basil leaves, washed, dried 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and add celery and onion; saute until transparent. Stir in mushrooms; cook 2 to 3 minutes more. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and parsley. Divide mixture in half, spoon into the squash and cover.
DIRECTIONS: Stir together olive oil, garlic and salt; toss with tomatoes and allow to stand for 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Brush each pizza crust with some of the tomato marinade. Sprinkle the pizzas evenly with Mozzarella and Fontina cheeses. Arrange tomatoes overtop, then sprinkle with shredded basil, Parmesan and feta cheese.
Cook 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Uncover, sprinkle with cheese and put back in the oven until the cheese bubbles. Source: http://allrecipes.com/ Submitted by: Linda

They encourage you to get involved wherever and whenever you can to help make someone’s life “better today than it was yesterday.” CCS CCS sophomores John Ethan Baldwin, sophomores John Ethan Baldwin, Scott Steinhauser and Lauren Beach Scott Steinhauser and Lauren Beach traveled to Belize with their church youth group. One part of the group worked primarily on construction, while others focused on a VBS (Vacation Bible School) with the village children. John Ethan was one of the main builders for a cabin the majority of the week and he helped out in various other construction projects - always giving 100% even when it meant digging a deep trench all day. Scott served on the VBS and construction teams. He even let the girls dress him up to dramatize the Bible story. He interacted with the children and always made himself available to serve in other areas. Lauren spent the week helping with VBS. She set up crafts and talked with the children to make sure they understood the story. Four Belize children accepted Christ, one of which Lauren prayed in Spanish with (thanks to Mrs. Hall’s CCS Spanish class). The VBS started with a little over 20 children and ended with 56 (actually 70 if you count the teenage boys who played

“fútbol”). The cabin was fully built, new basketball goals were installed, water line and electrical trenches were dug and several trees were removed. John, Scott and Lauren agree that it was a great week and they look forward to their next mission trip.

The CCS varsity cheer squad spent one of their camp days at Kids’ Meals Houston. They were able to pack more than 2,200 lunches for local children who normally would not have a lunch. The cheerleaders encourage others to make a difference by volunteering at Kids’ Meals or other non-profit organizations that help feed hungry children.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold two events designed to help erase racism and have brought in speakers from Chicago and Los Angeles to present. 5TH ANNUAL KENNEDY’S DISEASE GOLF SCRAMBLE
The Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce FORE Cy-Fair Golf Tournament will be held at Blackhorse Golf Club on Tuesday, September 29th with an 11 AM shotgun start. The tournament kicks off with registration at 9:30 AM and a putting contest at 10 AM. The awards, dinner and raffle will follow at 4 PM. Texas Emergency Care Center of Cypress is back for its fifth year as the event underwriter. A portion of the proceeds from the tournament, dinner and auction benefit the Adam Skinner Memorial Scholarship Fund of the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation. A scholarship has been established in his memory and the Chamber has contributed more than $94,000 to date to the endowment. Sponsorship and marketing opportunities range from $500 to $5,000. A 1-hour yoga class suitable for all levels of experience is being offered at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary. VFW VOICE OF DEMOCRACY A NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION
The Voice of Democracy essay is a National Competition created in 1947 to allow high school students in grades 9-12 to voice their opinion on their responsibility to our nation. The theme for 2015 is: “My Vision for America.” Students from public, private and parochial high schools and home schooled students, in the U.S. and in American high schools overseas may enter. The oral presentation must be not less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length, spoken in English and recorded on the media specified on the application form, with no background noise or enhancements. The essay cannot contain the student’s name, city, state, grade level or refer to their nationality. Entries must be received no later than midnight Nov. 1, 2015. How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston.
