HPCA Meeting Opportunities Residents have an opportunity to gather monthly with the Board at our Community Center. This gives HPCA members a chance to visit, meet neighbors and voice concerns.

The Board meets each month (12 times per year) to conduct normal business. You can always request to be on the agenda or have a special meeting. Please refer to the above noted schedule for residents meeting dates and times.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person.

Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.

Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and must be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises of the owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower beds might keep cats away.

• Monday, December 24th, Christmas Eve, Cornerstone will offer three worship opportunities: 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM. At 4:00 PM, there will be the Family Christmas Service. In addition to the singing of carols and Communion, children will be invited to the front of the church to hear the Christ Story and receive a special “Christmas” gift from the church. At 6:00 and 11:00 PM, there will be a traditional “Candlelight and Communion” service. It will include the retelling of the “Birth of Christ” through Scripture readings and hymns. All three services will include a “Candle Lighting Ceremony” with everyone lighting candles during the singing of “Silent Night.”

• Sunday, December 30th, we will continue our Christmas celebrations and include a “Favorite Christmas Hymn” time at our 8:30 and 10:45 AM services. During this time, worshippers will be given the opportunity to pick and choose their favorite Christmas hymns from The United Methodist Hymnal to be sung. At the 9:30 AM worship service, the Journey Praise Band will be leading worship with celebrative music. In addition, the Rev. Greg Smith will be bringing an inspiring post-Christmas message.

Everyone is invited to attend these special holiday fellowship and worship opportunities.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints new leadership On October 28th, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the appointment of a new ecclesiastical leader, David R. Lauck, who will serve as the president of the Cypress Texas Stake in Northwest Houston. He succeeds Stirling D. Pack Jr., who successfully completed nine years of service.

The Church is organized geographically into stakes, which are similar to a Catholic diocese. In his new assignment, President Lauck will preside over 12 congregations in Cypress, Waller, Fairfield, Bridgeland, Tomball and Northwest Houston.

Stake presidents typically serve for approximately 9-10 years and come from a variety of backgrounds. President Lauck was raised

in the Sugarland/Missouri City area. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in business. Currently he resides in Northwest Houston and is a business development manager with Shell Oil Company, where he has worked for over 21 years. The Church has no salaried ministry, so President Lauck will continue to work full time while fulfilling his new ecclesiastical responsibilities.

He and his wife, Leanne, have been married for 23 years. Houston has been their home for 14 of those years. They have three children - one currently serving a two-year church mission in New York, one attending college and one a student in Cy-Fair I.S.D.

Get Into the Christmas Spirit

Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26th and lasts through January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest. To prepare for the holiday, families decorate their homes with Kwanzaa symbols. A candle is lit for each day of Kwanzaa. A black candle is lit first, then red and green candles are lit alternately. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. They are Umoja or Unity, Kujichagulia or Self-Determination, Ujima or Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamma or Cooperative Economics, Nia or Purpose, Kuumba or Creativity and Imani or Faith.

Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus.

Hanukkah In Judaism, the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Consecration or the Feast of the Maccabees; also transliterated Chanukah. According to tradition, it was instituted by Judas Maccabeus and his brothers in 165 B.C. to celebrate the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem. The festival occurs in December near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas and lasts eight days.

Hanukkah later came to be linked also with a miraculous cruse of oil that burned for eight days, leading to the practice of lighting special Hanukkah candles, one the first evening, two the second and so on. The eight-branched candle stand (menorah) used in that ceremony is a frequent symbol for the holiday.

– 8oz. block of cream cheese bag frozen chopped onions cup mayonaise cup shredded parmesan cheese

Soften cream cheese in microwave and mix the remaining ingredients.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 25-30 minutes or until bubbly and brown around the edges.

VERMICELLI SALAD 1 (12oz.) package Vermicelli, cooked and drained 4 Tbsp olive oil 3 Tbsp lemon juice ½ tsp Allspice On first day, combine cooked Vermicelli, olive oil, lemon juice and allspice. Cover and refrigerate oernight.

2 Cups mayonnaise 1 bell pepper, chopped 1 cup chopped celery ½ cup chopped onion 1 4ounce jar pimiento 1 ( 6-8ox) can pitted ripe olives chopped 1 5 oz can water chestnuts, drained and sliced Salt and pepper to taste Optional: 2 ½ cup canned ham, cooked chicken breast, shrimp, or cooked hambuger Second day, add the rest of ingredients and mix well refrigerate

Drain half liquid (dark red kidney, black beans, navy beans, pinto beans, etc.)

1 (31 oz) can pork and beans ( Do not drain) ½ cup brown sugar ½ cup barbecue sauce ½ cup ketchup ½ large onion, chopped 1 10oz can regular or spicy chopped tomatoes, drained 1 teaspoon liquid smoke 1 teaspoon mustard ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground pepper 6 to 8 strips bacon Preheat oven to 350 . In a large skillet, brown the sausage, breaking it up into pieces as it cooks. When cooked through, remove from skillet and drain fat.

In very large bowl, mix sausage and everything else except bacon. Transfer mixture to a 9x13 inch or other large baking pan.

Place bacon strips on top and bake for 1 hour. If necessary, run under broiler to crisp bacon before serving. Makes 15 servings

3) At least two light timers should be set to turn the lights and TV on and off in a logical sequence when away for an extended time period to give the appearance that someone is home.

4) The motion detector or other alarm system (if you have one) should be activated when you leave home.

5) Mail and newspaper deliveries should be stopped or arrangements for a neighbor/friend to pick them up should be made when you are away from home for a period of time.

6) Ask a trusted neighbor to tend the yard and watch your home when you are away or have a trusted friend or relative house sit in your absence.

7) Make sure all doors and windows are locked when you leave, even if you have an alarm system.

PURPOSE OF HUNTER’S PARK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Hunter’s Park Community Association handles the financial and legal affairs of the subdivision. Each lot owner is required to pay an annual maintenance fee which is used to pay street lights; pay taxes on and maintain the common areas, such as the swimming pools, tennis courts, etc.; pay for security; and pay legal expenses incurred to enforce the deed restrictions.

The Board meets every other month at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the community building.

Residents are welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to place an item on the agenda should call the HPCA office in advance.

The Annual Meeting of Members is held on the 4th Thursday of January.

Members hold three year staggered terms and are elected. The election process is as follows: 1) Mail in ballots will be mailed out with the Annual Maintenance fee statements.

2) Voting in person will begin on the 1st Monday after the Annual Meeting ending on the following Saturday at 7pm.

The association’s office verifies complaints and writes letters to violators. HPCA will initiate legal action when warranted, to enforce the deed restrictions.

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL You must submit any plans for improvements or modifications of your home to the Hunter’s Park Community Association Office. Your plans will be checked to insure that they comply with the deed restrictions. This includes re-roofing, playforts (8 ft. height limit), temporary storage buildings, etc.

SECURITY Hunter’s Park Community Association provides additional security currently through a contract with Commissioners Court for four Harris County Constables. HPCA also hires off-duty deputies on an as-needed basis for additional coverage.

Please call the Constable’s Office at 281 463-6666 to report any suspicious person, activity or for vacation watch. There is a voluntary $2.00 security contribution on the M.U.D. #6 water bill that goes to each homeowner. The voluntary contributions can only be used to pay for security. This contribution enables HPCA to provide more coverage without raising maintenance fees.

WCA collects our trash on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Poly-carts, heavy trash and extra bags or items will be picked up on both days. Recycling picked up on Tuesdays only. The homeowner’s maintenance fee does not pay for garbage pick-up. You must call CWA to start service. Poly-carts and recycling bins are provided free of charge to homeowners or residents. When regular pick-up falls on a holiday, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, the pick-up will be made on the next regular scheduled pick up day. If your recycling day falls on a holiday it will be picked up the next week on your normal scheduled recycle day. WCA will collect for recycling, papers, plastics, aluminum and tin cans that are placed in the recycling bin. If items exceed container capacity, please place them adjacent to the bin. If you find items left in the bin, that are not recyclable, please dispose of the items in your polycart.

Trees, shrubs, brush trimmings and fencing must be bundled in lengths no greater than 4 feet, with no branch diameter exceeding 3 inches. Items that will be picked up, such as: appliances, furniture, carpet (up to 1 room, rolled up four feet wide and less than fifty pounds), cardboard boxes (flattened).

Refrigerators and freezers or any other items containing Freon must be drained of Freon and have an accompanying bill to validate such service was performed.

Items excluded from normal collection are dirt, rocks, bricks, concrete, tires, batteries, motor oil, cooking oil, waste generated by a private contractor or any materials or items deemed hazardous materials. Do not dispose of these items in a container that is not visible to WCA personnel.

Severn Trent Services was hired by the Water Board to manage the utility district and they can assist you if you have any problems.

The Board meets every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. at the Community Building. Members hold staggered 4 year terms and are elected the 1st Saturday in April at the Bear Creek Community Building.
