RENOVATION AND EXPANSION OF CFVFD STATION 5 The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department (CFVFD), in cooperation with Emergency Services District #9, began the renovation and expansion of Station 5 located on Aspenglenn Drive in early August. The construction is expected to take approximately 8 months and will involve remodeling the current living quarters and expansion in the rear to accommodate additional dorms, offices and parking. This work is being undertaken to provide suitable facilities for the ambulance and fire/rescue personnel who staff the Station and better accommodate the needs of this growing area. Once Station 5’s construction is completed, the CFVFD will hold an Open House for the Community to see the new facility and meet the staff who call Station 5 home. The CFVFD is always looking for new members, so if you may be interested, call the CFVFD Office (281-550-6663) or stop by your nearest Station on Thursday evenings at 7 PM to learn more about volunteering. You can also learn more about the CFVFD by looking at its website, www.cyfairvfd.com.

LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and must be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises of the owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower beds might keep cats away.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER • If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.
PET HOTLINE NEWS A very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all. Marie Nugent - 281-859-1104

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through December. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

Fall Maintenance Special
The holidays are busy times and our minds are preoccupied with shopping, baking, planning parties, church activities and so much more. The holidays are also lucrative times for criminals. Here are some tips for our residents: • Never leave packages or attractive items in a vehicle. Lock these in the trunk. Many car burglaries are occurring at various malls and shopping areas on the west and northwest side of Houston. • Try to shop with at least one other person. Stay together and be aware of your surroundings while in parking lots and in stores. • Watch your credit card and your driver’s license. When you pay for your purchases, you will often be asked for your driver’s license with your credit card; you will always have to present identification (usually a driver’s license) when you write a check. Yes, the lines are long and you want to hurry through your transaction, but don’t be tempted to engage in conversation or watch anything or anyone but the clerk processing your transaction. Both of these items should be within your sight at all times. Before you sign a credit card receipt, ask for your credit card and driver’s license. The holidays are great times for identity thieves and those who would steal your credit cards. Be very aware of what is happening when you pay for your purchase. Put everything away before leaving the purchase counter. • Never leave your purse in a locked or unlocked vehicle.

17111 Kieth Harrow Blvd., Ste G Houston, TX 77084 Cairnvillage Center Never set your purse down while shopping. Never put your purse in a shopping cart. Always have your purse in your hand or over your shoulder. To avoid purse snatching, cross the purse so that the strap is over one shoulder and the bag is hanging on the opposite side of your body. Men should carry wallets, check books and credit cards in the front pockets of their pants or in a shirt or interior suit pocket. • When going to your car with your purchases, check the lot for suspicious people. Carefully check around and glance under your vehicle. If a closed van is parked next to the driver’s door, slide in through the passenger side. Check the back eat and back floor before getting into your vehicle. If you are loading small children, lock your purse in the trunk with your packages (keep the keys in your hand or pocket). After the children are secured, take another look around for suspicious activity before you open the trunk to get your purse. When you get into your vehicle, immediately lock the doors, start the engine and drive away. If you feel insecure going into the parking lot, ask for a security guard to accompany you. • When returning home, immediately pull into your garage. If this is not an option, park the car in the driveway and immediately unload all contents and lock the car. Stay alert during this process. • Do not put attractive packages next to windows that offer an easy view from the street. • When leaving your home for the evening, leave some lights and a radio or television turned on. Leave one outside light on. When you return home, check

the sides of your house and the area across the street and adjacent to your home from your vehicle before parking. If you are a woman alone, get your house key ready before you exit your car. Lock your car as you are leaving it and immediately go to your door, unlock it, go inside and relock the door. • All homes should be equipped with long dead bolt key locks. Windows should be locked when you are not at home or are not awake. • If you are leaving for the holidays, ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the newspapers and your mail each day or file a stop delivery for these. Complete a vacation watch form at your local sheriff’s department’s storefront. By taking a few precautions, you will insure a safe and happy holiday for you and your family.
GREEN TIPS
1. The holidays are the best time to recycle. DON’T throw away a pile of stuff
when it can find a use elsewhere and keep our landfills a little emptier (and save you tax money). • Excess paper and cardboard gift wrapping can be recycled at the local schools in the yellow and green bins. • Plastic packaging can be recycled using your curbside bins. • Clothing, shoes and household items can always be recycled through charitable organizations like individual church thrift shops, Salvation Army, Purple Heart, etc. Aside from helping your neighbor during the holiday period, you can also get a tax write-off for such contributions. Or you can sell gently used items at local resale
* Weekends & Holidays Extra
shops (again, money in your pocket). • Electronics can be recycled at the local Goodwill office on Hwy. 6, just south of West Little York. A tax write-off for your donation just before the end of the year is a bonus! • Old cell phones can be donated to local women’s shelters, who wipe them and donate them to women in danger of abuse. • Old eyeglasses can be donated Lion’s International (www.lionsclubs.org/EN/ our-work/sight-programs/eyeglass-recycling). Check with your optometrist, most optometrist offices collect glasses for donation to this program. 2. Twenty (20) things to recycle. Go to www.mnn.com/lifestyle/recycling/ stories/20-things-you-didnt-know-youcould-recycle for the complete article. Copied below are the first 7 things to recycle. We’ll continue this list in the next two newsletters. 1) Athletic shoes - Tired, broken-down, “fragrant” running shoes are most generally directed to the trash, but given our penchant for kicks, that’s a lot of sneakers stinking up the landfill. A better future for your athletic shoes is to introduce them to one of Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe recycling bins (www.mnn.com/lifestyle/responsibleliving/blogs/recycle-your-athletic-shoesat-nike). Nike in turn will incorporate them into the raw material called Nike Grind, which is used in everything from running tracks to shoe soles to zippers. 2) Bicycles - Americans send more than 15 million bicycles out to pasture every year. But rather than throwing them in the dump, you can give your old two-wheelers a second life by donating them to Bikes of the World (www.bikesfortheworld.org), which collects, refurbishes and donates bikes to lower-income people and select institutions in developing countries.

3) Bike tools and gear - With a similar mission to Bikes of the World, Bikes Not Bombs (https://bikesnotbombs.org) takes bicycle bits, pieces and gear in addition to the bikes themselves. They accept parts, tools, broken components such as cracked frames, worn tires, tubes with holes, helmets, bags, lights, pumps, locks, cycle clothing, etc. They restore bikes and gear and deliver them overseas to economic development projects in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Bikes that don’t get shipped often land in the group’s youth programs where teens learn bicycle safety and mechanic skills while earning bikes to keep for themselves. 4) Bras - There comes a time in every bra’s life when it just has to move on and bras aren’t generally the kind of clothing we women toss in the “to donate” pile. But the Bosom Buddy Program (www.mnn.com/lifestyle/natural-beauty-fashion/ blogs/recycle-your-bra), started by a textile recycling company in Arizona, wants your weary bras. After sprucing them up, they donate the revamped brassieres to women’s shelters or other programs that help women gain self-sufficiency. 5) Brita water filters - Ditching plastic water bottles for filtered water is a resourceful move, even if you are left with spent water filters. But if you use Brita products, you’re in uck (www. mnn.com/lifestyle/recycling/stories/save-brita-filters-forrecycling). They have teamed up with the company Preserve and between the two, they are recycling Brita plastic pitcher filter casings into Preserve’s eco-friendly, 100-percent recycled products such as toothbrushes, cups and cutting boards. Also cool: the activated carbon within the filters is regenerated for alternative use or converted into energy. 6) Carpeting - When it comes time to reveal the lovely hardwood floor buried underneath that mod shag carpeting, find a carpet-reclamation facility (http://carpetrecovery.org) to take it for recycling. You can also check with individual carpet makers, many of which have recycling programs. 7) Compact fluorescent light bulbs - The mercury content makes CFLs a trickier disposal problem than basic bulbs, leaving many people confused about what to do with them once the light has been extinguished. But now both Ikea and Home Depot provide CFL recycling programs and other lighting stores are also beginning to accept these bulbs as well. If neither of these chain stores are nearby, see 5 ways to dispose of old CFLs for other ideas (www.mnn.com/your-home/at-home/ stories/5-ways-to-dispose-of-old-cfls).

MAYDE CREEK GIRLS VARSITY AND JV CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS BRING HOME GOLD! The Mayde Creek Girls competed at the Caldwell Cross-Country Invitational at Davidson Creek Park. The Varsity Girls and JV Girls both won their divisions, bringing home two Team Championship Plaques and 12 medals! The girls competed hard and had a great showing against 12 schools in the Austin and Bryan/College Station area. We were very fortunate the rain and storms cleared out so we would be able to race. The Varsity team and JV team both raced a 2-mile loop over some very muddy terrain. The Varsity squad was led by Senior Shenaya Thomas, who
20
placed 3rd, earning her a bronze medal. She recorded a time of 12:57 over the 2-mile course. Junior Olivia Johnston was the second Ram to finish, running a time of 12:59 and placing 4th. Senior Lesly Garza was the next Ram to cross the finish line with a time of 13:11, placing her 8th. Earning the final medal for the Lady Ram Cross Country Team was Senior Emily Lee, who placed 11th with a time of 13:30. Finishing behind her in 16th place, barely missing a medal, was Sophomore Ysatis Gonzalez. She recorded a 2-mile time of 13:41. The final Rams to finish, in a neck and neck battle, were Sophomore Valerie Durgin and Senior Ruby Uribe. They had times of 13:59.2 and 13:59.4 and placed 17th and 18th, respectively. The Varsity girls had a team total of 42 points earning them 1st place! Freshman Lexi Torbit led her team to the championship title by finishing the JV race in 1st place, earning her a gold medal. She had an awesome performance over the hilly and muddy course, running a time of 13:56. Close behind her in 2nd place was Freshman Andrea Vo. She recorded a time of 14:00, good for a silver medal. Also medaling was Senior Angy Rojas, who placed 4th with a time of 14:12. Rounding out the top 5 for the Lady Rams in a tight finish for 6th and 7th place was Sophomore Marissa McKay and Freshman Shelby Sears. They recorded times of 14:46 and 14:47, respectively. Also finishing in a close race was Senior Tatiana Sanchez
and foreign exchange student, Junior Alicia Van Bodungen Thelin, running in her first cross-country race ever. They had finishing times of 15:25.3 and 15:25.7, placing them 12th and 13th. Junior Jayla Blanke earned the final medal, placing 15th with a time of 15:30. Sophomore Emily Cruz barely missed a medal, coming in 16th place and recording a time of 15:35. Freshman Mairany Barbosa placed 19th with a time of 15:52. Freshman Leslie Garza was the next Ram to finish in 27th place, running a time of 17:03. Sophomores Frances Martinez, Daisy Guerrero and Rossy Reyna finished next in 31st, 32nd and 33rd place, with finishing times of 18:03, 18:39 and 18:46. The final Ram to finish was Junior Chloe Oyerly, who placed 35th with a time of 20:46. The JV team had a total of 20 points, giving them the 1st place team title! All of the Mayde Creek Cross-Country girls competed extremely hard and showed much confidence and improvement. There were many personal records! We are very proud of the way they competed, as well as their desire to win! It is an awesome feeling bringing back 2 team championship plaques! The girls were back in action Saturday, September 28th, when we traveled to Cy-Woods High School for the Cy-Woods Invitational. We would like to thank everyone for your continued support!

Please call HPCA OFFICE at 281-463-1216 to reach a board member.
PURPOSE OF HUNTER’S PARK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Hunter’s Park Community Association handles the financial and legal affairs of the subdivision. Each lot owner is required to pay an annual maintenance fee which is used to pay street lights; pay taxes on and maintain the common areas, such as the swimming pools, tennis courts, etc.; pay for security; and pay legal expenses incurred to enforce the deed restrictions. The Board meets every month at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the community building. Residents are welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to place an item on the agenda should call the HPCA office in advance. The Annual Meeting of Members is held on the 4th Thursday of January. Members hold three year staggered terms and are elected. The election process is as follows: 1) Mail in ballots will be mailed out with the Annual Maintenance fee statements. 2) Voting in person will begin on the 1st Monday after the Annual Meeting ending on the following Saturday at 7pm.
HPCA Office
Office Phone: 281 463-1216 Office Hrs: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mon- Fri. Closed Weekends and Major Holidays HPCA employs two workers to provide coverage for the office. Every effort is made to have one of the two employees in the office at all times. Occasionally business of the association may require us to be out of the office for a short period of time. If we are out of the office when you call or if you call after hours, please leave a message on the answering machine and your calls will be returned as soon as possible during office hours.
NEW RESIDENTS The HPCA office has a new resident package available at the office or by mail. Please call 281 463-1216 and we will be happy to send the information to you! DEED RESTRICTIONS Deed restrictions are strictly enforced by Hunter’s Park Community Association. Copies of the restrictions are available at the association’s office or by mail (call 281 463-1216). Complaint forms are included in every Bear Creek Newsletter for your convenience. The association’s office verifies complaints and writes letters to violators. HPCA will initiate legal action when warranted, to enforce the deed restrictions. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL You must submit any plans for improvements or modifications of your home to the Hunter’s Park Community Association Office. Your plans will be checked to insure that they comply with the deed restrictions. This includes re-roofing, playforts (8 ft. height limit), temporary storage buildings, etc. Please call the office at 281 463-1216 if you need any additional help or assistance. SECURITY Hunter’s Park Community Association provides additional security currently through a contract with Commissioners Court for four Harris County Constables. HPCA also hires off-duty deputies on an as-needed basis for additional coverage. Please call the Constable’s Office at 281 463-6666 to report any suspicious person, activity or for vacation watch. There is a voluntary $2.00 security contribution on the M.U.D. #6 water bill that goes to each homeowner. The voluntary contributions can only be used to pay for security. This contribution enables HPCA to provide more coverage without raising maintenance fees. Judy - Security Directory - HPCA - (281) 463-1216
