BARKING DOGS

If you have a problem with a neighbor’s dog constantly barking, you should first contact the pet owner and make them aware of the problem. In the event that doesn’t work, you should then contact the Constables at 281-463-6666 to file a complaint.

LOOSE OR LOST PETS & DOG BITES

Contact Harris County Animal Control at 281-999-3191 or 3194.

LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question

January 2016

5

2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and must be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises of the owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower beds might keep cats away. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Harris County Precinct #5, Contract #87: 281-463-6666 Harris County Animal Control: 281-999-3191 Harris County Health Department, Rabies/Animal Control Section 2223 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-3588 www.countypets.com

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases

January 2016

Bear Creek

and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

PET HOTLINE NEWS

A very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all. Marie Nugent - 281-859-1104

The induction was held at the Marriot North in Round Rock, TX. Roger started his career just out of the famed 82nd Airborne Division in 1969. After a successful Radio career on the air from Texas to North Carolina and Virginia Beach, he went to work for MCA Records and spent the next twenty years there. As Senior Southwest Regional Promotion Director he was chosen to introduce a new young country singer to radio on a radio promotional tour that started in San Antonio, his name was George Strait and as they say, “the rest is history.” Roger, was also involved in the early musical career of Reba McEntire, Mark Chesnutt, Lee Greenwood, Trisha Yearwood, Steve Wariner, Lyle Lovett, John Conlee and Tracy Byrd. He also was privileged to work with Vince Gill, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, Jimmy Buf fett, The Bellamy Brothers, The Oak Ridge Boys, Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn and many more. Roger is doing Independent Record Promotion for the Texas Charts by sharing his many years in the music business with you and upcoming artists. Roger says it’s been a wonderful and exciting ride all these years with many great memories to cherish. He is quick to add he could not have done it without his family, Connie Marie, wife of 44 years, 3 sons, Roger II, Joshua Lee and Nick Shane and daughter-in-laws Lara, Monica and Marita and six grandchildren, Gracie, Isabelle, Luke, Max, Kaylee and Miles. The ride continues with another granddaughter, Kendall Marie joining the Corkill’s in April of 2016

BOY SCOUTS BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COPPERHEAD DISTRICT

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives. The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). JANUARY LAWN CARE Whether you’re new to Texas or have lived here all your life, you might be wondering how to keep your grass healthy throughout winter so you have a lush, green lawn come spring. If you need a few pointers, just follow these guidelines below and give your lawn the care it needs to thrive all year round! 1. Tailor your watering to the season. Since we rarely get snow in this part of Texas, our lawn still needs to be taken care of in winter. Keep in mind that grass needs about 1 to 2 inches of rain per week, including any rainfall. Be sure to water your lawn if it’s been a few weeks without rain, as it’s probably thirsty. In terms of when and how to water your lawn, early morning is best so it can dry throughout the day and stave off lawn diseases. 2. Try to stay off the lawn. It may be tempting to walk across your lawn as a shortcut, but use the designated walking paths if possible. Although grass is pretty resilient, it can still get worn down if it’s repeatedly trampled on. Likewise, try to keep your lawn clear of stray objects or children’s toys so it can breathe. And of course, if you park a car or truck on your lawn, your grass may not fare so well. 3. Use stray leaves to your advantage. Not only can a solid blanket of leaves suffocate your lawn, but they can provide warmth and shelter for a variety of lawn nuisances like rodents, fungi and insects. However, you don’t necessarily need to bag up all those leaves and take them to the curb. They can actually be a great source of nutrients for your grass if you turn them into a mulch. THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. When MLK Jr. was a little boy, it saddened him that he could not befriend people who were not black. He knew in his heart that just because people may look different on the outside, the contents of their hearts and their character is what makes a person valuable. Martin Luther King Jr. saw a social problem, developed a dream and eventually by taking action, he changed the United States as well as the world. He is still today among the most well-known social activists in the world. • Martin Luther King Jr. led the bus boycott in 1955 that was sparked by Rosa Parks. • He helped form the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, an organization that worked for civil rights. • He was the leader of the entire civil rights movement in the 1960s that called for working out conflicts with kindness and love as opposed to hate and violence. • Martin Luther King Jr. fought for and achieve mandatory equal voting rights in America for blacks and whites. • Martin Luther King Jr. led lunch counter sit-ins where he and other blacks and whites demanded equal treatment in restaurants for people of all races. • Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolent peaceful demonstrations proved to the world that action without violence can be effective and successful. • Because of Martin Luther King Jr., it is no longer legal in the United States to segregate or discriminate based on skin color. • The standard has been set for all nations to treat everyone equally regardless of skin color because of the work of Martin Luther King Jr. Courtesy of: http://castle.eiu.edu/

SOMETHING TO CROW ABOUT

BY CHERYL CONLEY, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER

Are crows as smart as your 7-year-old? Numerous scientific studies indicate the answer to that question is yes. In a study done in 2014, crows were trained to match cards by rewarding them with food when a correct match was made. Then the experimenters decided to complicate the test by showing the crows cards that were not identical but had the same pattern. The crows were still able to match them. Then there’s the story of 8-year-old Gabi Mann from Seattle who began feeding neighborhood crows and in exchange for food, the birds began to bring her gifts.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through January. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER Corvids, the family of birds that includes crows, are thought by many scientists to be among the most intelligent animals on earth. Here are just a few of the reasons why. Keep in mind these conclusions are based on scientific tests. • Crows recognize faces and hold grudges. Just ask some researchers in Seattle what happens when you try an experiment on crows that they don’t like. • Crows have regional dialects and they communicate with each other. • Crows are problem-solvers. A crow unable to crack nuts was observed putting the nuts on the road and waiting until cars passed over them. • Crows use tools. In one experiment, a crow used a wire to retrieve a stick and then used it to reach some food it wanted. It was even smart enough to realize it had to bend the wire first in order to retrieve the stick. • Crows are caring and nurturing. In 1999, Wallace and Ann Collito of Massachusetts saw a very small kitten in their yard. They observed a crow feed the kitten and protect her from other animals. Crows are easily imprinted and when a crow is brought to TWRC Wildlife Center for rehabilitation, steps are taken to insure this doesn’t happen. If imprinted, the bird loses it fear of humans and can’t be released. While rehabilitating, human contact is kept to a minimum. Sometimes caregivers where masks or refrain from letting the bird see their face. This will insure a successful release. For more information about TWRC Wildlife Center, check out our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter.org. We are located at 10801 Hammerly Boulevard in Houston.

GRATITUDE CAN MAKE YOU HAPPIER, HEALTHIER Health experts, psychologists and different schools of philosophy and religion said that gratitude is essential to live longer and happier lives and several studies on the scientific side of

thankfulness also prove it. Researchers of a study published in Personal Relationships journal found that gratitude was linked to improved marriage outcomes. After surveying more than 460 couples by phone, the results showed that the power of thank you can go a long way in helping significant others feel appreciated, that their partners are committed to the relationship and that the partnership will last. Gratitude also helped protect a couple’s relationship from divorce and separation and that marital commitment is also protected from the negative consequences due to communication breakdown during conflicts. “Even if a couple is experiencing distress and difficulty in other areas, gratitude in the relationship can help promote positive marital outcomes,” said Allen Barton, a postdoctoral research associate at UGA’s Center for Family Research and the study’s lead author. Another recent research from the American Psychological Association published last April said that asymptomatic heart failure patients who kept a gratitude journal had markedly decreased levels of inflammation and improved cardiac health. More than 180 men and women participated in the study and had to keep a gratitude journal for at least eight weeks. Researchers found that those who committed to these journals had reduced circulation on inflammatory biomarkers of the disease as well as improved heart contractility and function. “It seems that a more grateful heart is indeed a more healthy heart and that gratitude journaling is an easy way to support cardiac health,” said Paul J. Mills, professor of family medicine and public health at the University of California. How does one practice gratitude even at times when it feels like there is nothing to be thankful for at all? One way to do this,

some experts say, is in shifting the mindset to finding things to be grateful for, no matter how small it is. “It is relatively easy to be thankful for the most important and obvious parts of life - a happy marriage, healthy kids or living in America,” wrote Arthur Brooks, president of American Enterprise Institute and a writer for the New York Times. “But truly happy people find ways to give thanks for the little, insignificant trifles.” Courtesy of techtimes.com

The Real Estate Staging Association, which did a survey on this topic. Here are some tips from real estate agents on how to stage your home ready to sell:

Declutter and depersonalize. Declutter books, pictures, knickknacks and anything else that is exclusively you. Paint walls in neutral tones. Real estate experts believe certain paint colors inspire buyers to put in an offer and often suggest that sellers repaint their home in these hues to create a blank canvas for optimal staging: Shaker Beige, Jackson Tan, Linen White and Mellow Yellow. (Most paint stores can do color matches) Turn on all the lights. If you don’t have enough light, things can look drab and dreary, especially if you have showings on a gray day. Adding floor lamps to rooms that don’t have enough light brighten things up. Set the table. Set up a blank dining table for a dinner party so there is a wow factor when buyers walk in and see your beautifully arranged table. Add mirrors. Mirrors make rooms look larger. Keep furniture proportional to the room. Strategically placing a minimal amount of furniture in a small space works better than over-crowding it with too much furniture Minimize art and decorations. When staging a room, use paintings that are landscapes or abstract or figurative art that brings out an accent color in the room without being too specific. Turn your bathroom into a spa. Purchase solid white towels, rugs and shower curtains when preparing to sell your home. These simple luxuries don’t cost much, but can make a significant difference in the feel of the room. Add pops of color. Now that you’ve painted the walls a pleasure neutral hue, think about adding in pops of color. These could be colorful pillows on couches and beds or a bowl of green Granny Smith apples in the kitchen. Clean out and organize closets. Make sure hangers are evenly spaced apart and match your shoes, purses and accessories to give a color-coordinated organized appearance inside your closet. Clear off countertops. Get rid of all clutter in bathrooms and kitchens except for the bare necessities that “read” bathroom (soap dish and a hand towel) or kitchen (coffee machine). Put a cookbook on a stand on a kitchen counter, Kitchens are often the number one priority on a buyer’s list, so make yours look as clean, open and spacious as possible. Don’t forget that while staging the inside of your home is important, the outside-the site of your curb appeal-is just as critical if you want your home to sell fast. Courtesy of parade.com

TRAIN THE BRAIN: SAY NO TO JUNK FOOD Many Americans will vow to give up junk food as a New Year resolution. You CAN eat as many healthy, whole foods as possible and the less junk food you eat, the less you want. Try the following tips: • Five Ingredient Rule: If there are more than five ingredients on a food label, don’t buy it. • Aim for Three Colors: A 2012 Cornell study found that people prefer three food items and three different colors on their plates,

compared with more or less of either category. Therefore, instead of reaching for a candy bar, snack on nuts (loaded with healthy fats), fruit slices and a small square of dark chocolate to get a healthy variety of colors, textures and nutrients. • Break Your Routine: It only takes a few weeks to form a habit. So if you always associate 3 PM with a trip to the vending machine, start a tradition to walk around the block for five minutes instead. This may kick your craving altogether. • Make Healthy Food Your Treat: One of the best, easiest desserts? Stash red grapes in the freezer and cap off dinner with something sweet without kick-starting sugar cravings. • Keep the Healthy Stuff Handy: Store healthy foods you want to eat more front and center in your fridge and out on your countertops. • Know Your Trigger Foods: Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth for chocolate and red velvet anything or love salty treats like pretzels, know the foods that send you down the spiral of junk food binging. JUST FOR TODAY BY DEAR ABBY

This is one of the more popular requested columns from the famous advice columnist Dear Abby. Read on: Today is the day we have an opportunity to discard destructive old habits for healthy new ones and with that in mind, I will share Dear Abby’s often-requested list of New Year’s Resolutions, which were adapted by my late mother, Pauline Phillips, from the original credo of Al-Anon: JUST FOR TODAY: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all of my problems at once. I know that I can do something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

JUST FOR TODAY: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with sunshine. JUST FOR TODAY: I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those things that I can correct and accept those I cannot. JUST FOR TODAY: I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer. JUST FOR TODAY: I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path and I’ll not speak ill of others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly and not interrupt when someone else is talking. JUST FOR TODAY: I will refrain from improving anybody but myself. JUST FOR TODAY: I will do something positive to improve my health. If I’m a smoker, I’ll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully - if only just for today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even if it’s only around the block. JUST FOR TODAY: I will gather the courage to do what is right and take responsibility for my own actions.
