NEWS! CY-FAIR FIRE DEPARTMENT, STATION #5 Welcome to your friendly neighborhood fire Station Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department has a long and successful record for providing fire and medical emergency services to the citizens of Northwest Harris County. From its beginning in the late 1950’s, Cy-Fair VFD is now on one of the largest and busiest Volunteer Fire Departments in the United States, with over 18,000 emergency responses per year. The 300+ men and women from our area are what make up this Department and they are some of the best trained and equipped firefighters in the nation. Cy-Fair VFD covers the 180-square mile area of Emergency Services District (ESD) #9 and we currently respond from 12 stations strategically located throughout our territory. One such fire station is centrally located right in your back yard. For many years, Station 5 was originally an old garage barn next to Hooper’s Drive-In at 4529 Highway 6 North. The “fire phone H.P.C.A. OFFICE was inside the grocery store with an extension 4503 A Hickory downs running to the firehouse next door. In 1996 and with great appreciation to Hunter’s Park Houston, TX 77084 Community Association, Station 5 was able to move to its present location at 16035 Aspenglenn 281-463-1216 Dr. In 1998, our old building was torn down and a beautiful new building was erected and that allowed Station 5 to house an Engine, a Rescue Truck and an Ambulance.

Although our name says “Volunteer, one thing you may not know about us is that we are actually a Combination Volunteer Fire Department. What that means to you is that we not only operate with Volunteers, we also have paid Utility Crews during the week until 5 PM and paid EMS personnel staffed 24/7 on the ambulance. This allows us to ensure that no emergency will go unanswered, no matter the time or day. Station 5 is one of the smaller stations in the department, with approximately 20 volunteer members, ranging from men and

16100 Cairnway, Suite 285 women of all age groups and years of service. We have from 28 years of service all the way down to 2 years of service, but rest assured that we are a tight nitched group who cares deeply about our community and its residents and we are always ready to serve. Statistics show that the average life of a Volunteer is 2-3 years, but the members of Station 5 far exceed those statistics, as we have had the honor of having one of your residents at our station for 28 years and counting and recently his son has joined our family. Station 5 also has many members of different rankings within the Department. Our current Captain has been at Station 5 for 13 years; his First Lieutenant has been at Station 5 for 9 years; another 13 year Station 5 veteran is now serving the Department as a Safety Officer and the Department’s Board President has also been at Station 5 for 9 years. We all join the Department for our own personal reasons and we all come from different backgrounds, but all of us live within the community and that is what leads us to join Cy-Fair VFD Station 5. We would like to extend the invitation to invite you to visit the station and get to know your neighborhood firefighters. Let us show you what we do and who knows, maybe you will realize that you would like to become a member. We would love to grow our current family and add some more local residents to our Station. Feel free to stop on by any Thursday night, as we will be there training and would enjoy an opportunity to meet the residents we serve and protect.

LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “all dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of harris County, texas. the custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.” Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question
6
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.” While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and must be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises of the owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower beds might keep cats away. to make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: harris County Precinct #5, Contract #87: 281-463-6666 harris County animal Control: 281-999-3191 harris County health Department, Rabies/animal Control Section 2223 West Loop South, houston, texas 77027-3588 www.countypets.com
BARKING DOGS If you have a problem with a neighbor’s dog constantly barking, you should first contact the pet owner and make them aware of the problem. In the event that doesn’t work, you should then contact the Constables at 281-463-6666 to file a complaint.

A very important thing you can do is have a collar with some form of ID and your phone number on it. Pet stores have special ID’s for your pets. Many pet owners are now “chipping” the pets. If found and taken to a vet they can scan chip and find the owner. If your pet has a rabies tag, the vet has your name and #. The first thing I ask a caller is “does the pet have ID on it.” If it does, I will help contact the # on the ID and get the pet to it’s owner ASAP. Or the owner can pick up their lost pet. Having an ID on a pet makes life easier for all. Marie Nugent - 281-859-1104

But what they have achieved through their coupling is so shockingly far from their expectations that it is hard to believe. Coming to terms with that reality takes them on a life altering and often humors journey of self-discovery and acceptance. KimberLy aKimbo, By David Lindsay-Abaire, Directed by Ron Jones, november 29-December 15, 2012, STUDIO 101 (1824 Spring Street, Houston 77007). Kimberly Akimbo is a play written in 2000 by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. Its title character is a lonely teenage girl suffering from a disease a lot like progeria, that causes her to age 4 and a half times as fast as normal. Thus, Kimberly is trapped inside the frail physical body of an elderly woman. She meets another misfit (a teenage boy) and the two form an attachment to one another that borders on attraction. The situation is not helped by Kimberly’s rapidly deteriorating health. Soon Kimberly’s family gets mixed up in some crazy money schemes and the family gets emotionally destroyed.

This casual social meeting is open to anyone with progressive memory loss or cognitive impairment and their families or care partners. The café will enhance existing health and social care services, providing people with the opportunity to meet with others who have similar experiences. Attendees can play board or video games, do a session of Tai Chi, sing their favorite karaoke tune or simply take part in conversations with others. Information, as well as practical tips about coping with Alzheimer’s disease will be available. This informal setting provides emotional support and reduces the isolation often felt by people with dementia, their caregivers and families. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through July. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

GRILLING SEASONAL VEGETABLES By Paula Deen Test Kitchen Grilling fresh seasonal vegetables is a not only a healthy way to prepare them, it’s also a snap! Why dirty up another bowl, pan or dish after a long day? Not to mention the ease and speediness in which dinner is ready and the cost effectiveness of grilling a side dish. The exclamation points are the appealingly sweet smoky flavor that a grill imparts and the bright colors left behind. Here are some handy grilling tips for preparing vegetables along with a couple of recipe ideas. We hope the next time you have a chance to pick vegetables fresh from the garden or your local farmers market you use these tips and cook them on the grill. Vegetable Grilling Tips: ** Spray the grill with non-stick cooking spray prior to heating the grill to help make clean up a snap. **Make sure your grill is medium hot. One way to test this is to place your hand over the grill. If you can hold it there for 4 seconds, the fire is medium hot. **Prevent your vegetables from drying out on the grill by soaking them in cold water first. **Vegetables should be cut to expose the most surface area to the grill. This helps them to cook quickly. Also, cut the pieces equal in size so they will cook evenly. For example: Cut your squash and eggplant into strips, not rounds, of the same width. **Use kosher salt or sea salt on your vegetables to bring out extra moisture. Seasoning with salt and pepper both before and after grilling helps to make them sweet and full of flavor. **Someone in the family doesn’t like grilled vegetables? Try this trick. Sprinkle a little sugar on the vegetables half way through the cooking. This gives them a wonderful caramel flavor. **Use tongs to turn your vegetables on the grill instead of a fork. You don’t want to puncture them, as it will release the moisture.

**Smaller vegetables such as cherry tomatoes (we’ll just pretend and call this a vegetable) and small mushrooms might fall through the grill and should be skewered first. Thick onion slices should also be skewered all the way through to keep them whole while grilling. I like to use metal skewers instead of bamboo since they don’t burn and I can reuse them. **Because vegetables lack fat, they need oil or some sort of liquid marinade to prevent them from burning and sticking to the grill. Brush them with a vegetable oil or flavored oil such as a prepared salad dressing prior to placing on the grill. You can also marinate them in a prepared dressing or your own marinade recipe. Grill Times and Techniques: Corn on the cob: Gently pull back the husks but keep them intact. Remove the silks and soak the cobs in cold water for 30 minutes. Dry and brush with butter or make your own compound butter by mixing together 1/4 cup butter (room temperature), 2 teaspoons ground chipotle pepper, and zest of one lime. Fold the husks back down over the kernels, twist the ends and place on the grill for 8-10 minutes, turning every two minutes. Serve with extra Chipotle, Lime Butter or have fun and invent other compound butters. Asparagus: Cut off ends and soak in water for 30 minutes. Brush with oil. Grill 2-3 minutes, or until tips begin to brown. Eggplant: Cut lengthwise into 1/2” slices. Brush with oil. Grill 2-3 minutes per side. Garlic: Cut the root end off of a whole bulb. Brush with oil and place cut side down on the grill. Grill 10 minutes, or until the skin is a dark brown. Onions: Remove skin and cut into 1/2 inch thick slices. Run a metal skewer through the entire slice. Brush with oil. Grill 5 minutes per side. Bell Peppers: Cut the pepper in half from top to bottom. Remove stems, seeds and ribs. Brush with oil. Grill 3-4 minutes per side. Zucchini or Summer Squash: Slice lengthwise into 1/2 inch thick slices. Brush with oil. Grill 4-5 minutes per side.
29
Cremini or Button Mushrooms: Wipe clean with a dry cloth. Thread on a metal skewer and brush with oil. Grill 8-12 minutes, turning every 2 minutes. Romaine Lettuce (for a quick grilled Caesar salad): Cut in half lengthwise. Brush with oil and place cut side down on the grill. Grill 2-3 minutes. Recipes: Try this sweet simple summer marinade recipe: 1 cup fresh orange juice 1 tablespoon soy sauce 2 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced Juice and zest of 1 lemon

The Board meets every other month at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the community building. Residents are welcome to attend. Complaint forms are included in every Bear Creek Newsletter for your convenience. The association’s office verifies complaints and writes letters to violators. HPCA will initiate legal action when warranted, to enforce the deed restrictions. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL You must submit any plans for improvements or modifications of your home to the Hunter’s Park Community Association Office. Your plans will be checked to insure that they comply with the deed restrictions.
