STUDENTS AND CAMPUSES CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH Throughout the month of February, campuses across Katy ISD celebrated Black History Month with plays, talent shows, history lessons and by inviting special guests to speak to students. These events celebrated the successes and contributions of Black Americans, both present day and past. Among some of the activities included a special weekly reading series at Mayde Creek High School that featured notable contributions of Black Americans during morning announcements. Students at Exley Elementary were treated to a Freedom Train performance that told the inspirational story about a mother and son and their quest to seek freedom from slavery. Additionally, McDonald Junior High students traveled to Morton Ranch High School for a celebration that included special guests KIAH-TV Weekday Anchor, Mia

Gradney, former Katy ISD principal and campus namesake, Roosevelt Alexander and members of the McDonald Junior High Black History Committee. Students also enjoyed a performance by the McDonald Junior High band and a student play that illustrated key milestones in Black History. Morton Ranch High School hosted its 7th annual Black History Program on February 16th. This year’s theme, “HEROES,” paid homage to the student’s heroes within their lives - whether a past historical figure that paved a way for them to have a better today or someone within their family that is their constant cheerleader. Student performances ranged from original poetry works, lyrical and hip-hop dances, skits and songs. GIFTED STUDENTS BECOME ARCHEOLOGISTS DIGGING FOR TREASURE More than 1,300 gifted students from every KISD elementary campuses visited the Katy Outdoor Learning Center over a two-week period to spend a day being archeologists. In budget conscious times, KISD and Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented (KPGT) joined forces to create a fantastic opportunity to put months of class research into practice. Specially prepared archeological pits were an unending source of fascinating artifacts leading students to hypothesize why bones, beads, arrowheads and other items may be discovered. Energetic geo-caching scavenger hunts through the woodlands introduced how archeologists use new technology. Archeology experts volunteered their time and knowledge to take students around the world on a virtual tour of ancient civilizations.

Iggy the Iguana

Turtle Town

Students will learn how to think outside of the box and create unique characters with interesting stories. The author, Melissa Williams, will discuss the way she used her own experiences with her pets to create the fictional characters in Iggy the Iguana and Turtle Town series while teaching the use of archetypes, conflict resolution and original storyline development tactics. Students will learn how to bring their own ideas to life through words and illustrations as professional illustrator Ryan Shaw explains the process of connecting to the author’s characters with art. During the week, the students will have the opportunity to use their newly learned skills to come up with their own character and develop a unique short story that will be eligible for publication in the “I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids contest.

Scouting activities include camping, fishing, archery, rifle/shotgun shooting, hiking, first aid, wilderness survival, community service, citizenship, swimming, leadership, white-water rafting and much more. Troop 61 camps each month and has a group that goes to High Adventure Camp and to Merit Badge Camps each summer.

Boy Scout Troop 10 meets every Tuesday night during the school year at the West Houston Church of Christ on West Road and Queenston. Our meetings begin at 7 PM. We spend our time working on merit badges, planning for our monthly camp outs and having fun!! The boys had a great time at this years annual Scout Fair, held at Reliant Arena. This event gives the Scouts a chance to participate in many games and activities and visit many informational booths. The older boys usually set up a large cooking area outside where you can sample numerous camping treats! The most popular being Cobbler in every flavor! We are looking forward to our May camp out which will be to Garner State Park and then Summer Camp which will be at Camp Constantine. If you have a son in the 6th grade or higher that would like to join in the fun and adventure please contact us. Our Scout Master is Michael Widaski and his number is 713-376 5166. You can also contact our Committee Chairperson, Joseph Jefferson, at 281-684-5197 or check our website at www. bsat10.com . We hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Season!

Our Scout Troop participates in the local council activities and has a campout each month at locations that the boys pick. Each summer we send a group of boys on a High Adventure Trek and or a group of boys to a Summer camp. We would like to invite you and your scouter to join the Boy Scouts of America. Scouting has a reputation for helping youth develop leadership, self-reliance, strong character, respect for others, good citizenship skills and physical and mental fitness. Please join our Troop 827 for a look at the Scouting experience at 7 PM, Tuesdays at 16000 Rippling Water Drive, Houston TX. 77084. “Serving the Katy area for over 7 years.” The epic story presented in Les Misérables School Edition is a great way to introduce children to the magic of musical theatre. Broadway’s legendary musical, originally adapted from Victor Hugo’s timeless novel, has been specially adapted to meet the needs of young performers. Relentless in its musical drive, Les Misérables School Edition is filled with powerful imagery of darkness and light, highlighting, throughout its dramatic action, the struggle inherent in the human condition and the indomitability of the spirit, despite great suffering. Set in 19th century France, this classic and poignant musical, tells the story of Jean Valjean, a strong-hearted man jailed for stealing a loaf of bread. As he struggles to make a new life for himself given his new found freedom, he must grapple with questions of faith, fatherhood and allegiance to the law. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through May. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION TIPS

This year we celebrate Mother’s Day on May 13 . The modern American holiday officially began in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May a day to honor all the mothers of mere mortals like us. Here are some tips on celebrating all things mom! th

1. Deliver the classic Mother’s Day treat: Cook her favorite morning fare and tuck her favorite flowers into a small crystal vase. Fill the tray with small presents. 2. Take your mother on a trip: Make it as simple as a weekend getaway or as elaborate as a U.S. tour! 3. Surprise your mother with a visit if she lives far away. 4. Deliver her present by way of a treasure hunt. 5. Honor your mother’s memory if she’s no longer living. Send a donation to her favorite charity or spend the day working for her favorite cause. Do things she taught you to love. 6. Thank the women who produced your favorite people - send cards, flowers or notes to the mothers of your friends, even if you’ve never met them. 7. Throw a Mother’s Day party for your mother, your friends and their mothers.

Garlic Prime rib INGREDIENTS: 1 (10 pound) prime rib roast 10 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons ground black pepper 2 teaspoons dried thyme

Cook’s Corner

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F (260 degrees C). Place the roast in a roasting pan with the fatty side up. In a small bowl, mix together the garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper and thyme. Spread the mixture over the fatty layer of the roast and let the roast sit out until it is at room temperature, no longer than 1 hour. Bake the roast for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, then reduce the temperature to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C), and continue roasting for an additional 60 to 75 minutes. The internal temperature of the roast should be at 145 degrees F (53 degrees C) for medium rare. Allow the roast to rest for 10 or 15 minutes before carving so the meat can retain its juices. http://allrecipes.com/ Submitted by Chef Mike

HUNTER’S PARK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Officers Gayle Minto - President Judy VanDyke Amy Matthias Shelly Schmitz - Treasurer Terry Martin - Secretary/Assistant Treasurer Legal Counsel - Michael Gainer

Please call HPCA OFFICE at 281-463-1216 to reach a board member.

PURPOSE OF HUNTER’S PARK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION Hunter’s Park Community Association handles the financial and legal affairs of the subdivision. Each lot owner is required to pay an annual maintenance fee which is used to pay street lights; pay taxes on and maintain the common areas, such as the swimming pools, tennis courts, etc.; pay for security; and pay legal expenses incurred to enforce the deed restrictions. The Board meets every other month at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the community building. Residents are welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to place an item on the agenda should call the HPCA office in advance. The Annual Meeting of Members is held on the 4th Thursday of January. Members hold three year staggered terms and are elected. The election process is as follows: 1) Mail in ballots will be mailed out with the Annual Maintenance fee statements. 2) Voting in person will begin on the 1st Monday after the Annual Meeting ending on the following Saturday at 7pm.

HPCA Office

Office Phone: 281 463-1216 Office Hrs: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mon- Fri. Closed Weekends and Major Holidays HPCA employs two workers to provide coverage for the office. Every effort is made to have one of the two employees in the office at all times. Occasionally business of the association may require us to be out of the office for a short period of time. If we are out of the office when you call or if you call after hours, please leave a message on the answering machine and your calls will be returned as soon as possible during office hours.

DEED RESTRICTIONS Deed restrictions are strictly enforced by Hunter’s Park Community Association. Copies of the restrictions are available at the association’s office or by mail (call 281 463-1216). Complaint forms are included in every Bear Creek Newsletter for your convenience. The association’s office verifies complaints and writes letters to violators. HPCA will initiate legal action when warranted, to enforce the deed restrictions. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL You must submit any plans for improvements or modifications of your home to the Hunter’s Park Community Association Office. Your plans will be checked to insure that they comply with the deed restrictions. This includes re-roofing, playforts (8 ft. height limit), temporary storage buildings, etc. Please call the office at 281 463-1216 if you need any additional help or assistance. SECURITY Hunter’s Park Community Association provides additional security currently through a contract with Commissioners Court for four Harris County Constables. HPCA also hires off-duty deputies on an as-needed basis for additional coverage. Please call the Constable’s Office at 281 463-6666 to report any suspicious person, activity or for vacation watch. There is a voluntary $2.00 security contribution on the M.U.D. #6 water bill that goes to each homeowner. The voluntary contributions can only be used to pay for security. This contribution enables HPCA to provide more coverage without raising maintenance fees. Judy - Security Directory - HPCA - (281) 463-1216
