GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. Bella Terra

• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

HOLIDAY VOLUNTEERING IN HOUSTON! Looking for something more meaningful to accomplish versus fighting holiday shopping traffic? VOLUNTEER! There are many opportunities available in our city. Here are a few: 1. Houston Food Bank: opportunities include organizing the pantry shelves and also preparing food bags for pick up for families in need. The holidays are the second hardest time for families who are unable to afford food due to more members being at home. 2. City Wide Club: this local group organizes the Thanksgiving and Christmas feast. Log on to citywideclub.com and the whole family can help serve meals, give food bags, coordinate clothing donations and much more. 3. Citizens for Animal Protection in Katy: many animals are abandoned during the holidays. Spend time with those who cannot speak for themselves. 4. Senior Assisted Living facilities: our senior citizens are the most neglected group of people. Coordinate a magazine drive and donate magazines to a local residential living center, sing holiday carols or better yet, visit and speak with the residents and offer holiday cheer.

8 TIPS TO MANAGE HOLIDAY SPENDING Think you can’t get through the holidays without spending a fortune? Read on for some tips on how to make this season a spending holiday, rather than getting wrapped up in holiday spending. 1. Set Limits for Total Holiday Spending: Give your credit card and your mind a holiday by limiting what you buy to what can safely come out of your bank account. The money you can reasonably spend on gifts is money that isn’t going to bills. 2. Make Your Own “Naughty” or “Nice” Lists: If your shopping list includes more than five people outside of your immediate family, cut down on the number of people on your present list. Then, bake some cookies to give to all the people you snipped from your original gift list. 3. Budget Based on Your Own Finances: If you have any doubts as to whether those on your list will appreciate the less expensive presents you buy them, think back to what your friends and family gave to you when their budgets were tighter. 4. Become a Coupon and Coupon Code Collector: Before you shop online or in stores, perform a quick web search for coupon codes for your favorite online stores and also comb through the coupons you received in your mailbox. 5. Give Your Time: Mom and Dad (or other far-away family and friends) might love nothing more than a visit from you. Give small gifts and large hugs. However, if you’re tight on cash and want to send a gift, try a calling card. 6. Give Yourself a Better Spending Habit: Give yourself a gift by developing a new and improved spending habit. For example, for every dollar you spend on gifts, you could find a way to remove that dollar from your regular spending.

6

7. Give Personalized Gifts Instead of Expensive Gifts: A small, thoughtful gift is worth more than an expensive gift that someone may never use. Avoid impulses to shop at trendy department stores and start the holiday by taking a moment to think about what those on your list could really use. 8. Organize Group Volunteering Instead of Holiday Parties: Your friends probably struggle with overspending as much as you do over the holidays. Give them the relief of forgoing buying gifts for you by organizing a group volunteer day instead. The Bottom Line: Don’t let your debt become the Scrooge that steals the fun out of your holiday season. Spend time with your friends and family, base your gift buying on sentiment rather than dollar value and avoid giving yourself a year-round debt headache. If you can follow these tips, when your holiday bank statements arrive in the New Year, you’ll find yourself singing “Joy to the World” all over again. Courtesy of Investopedia.com

THREE BEST HOLIDAY GIFTS FOR YOUR HONEY George Bailey, the lead character in “It’s A Wonderful Life,” was no stranger to stress and hardship during Christmas of 1946, enduring bankruptcy, dishonesty and an attempted suicide. It took all of this - plus some tough lessons from a guardian angel - for him to eventually realize that life is, in fact, wonderful. While it is a wonderful time of the year, it can also be taxing on relationships, energy and finances. Consequently, all the social gatherings, travel time and shopping trips can make it difficult to emotionally connect with your spouse, let alone reflect on the holiday’s eternal significance. Want to avoid burnout and frustration this year? Give your spouse the three best gifts you can give - communication, time and perspective - and reconnect with the true meaning of Christmas as a couple.

1. Gift budget. Be sure to set a budget before you start shopping and planning. Sit down with your spouse and determine who you will give gifts to, what you will spend in total and how to disperse that budget among those on your gift list. 2. Social calendar. As a couple, decide which things are the most practical for your marriage and then attend accordingly. 3. Time between your families. Discuss how you will balance your time between two families, especially if you have limited time off work. GIFT #2: The gift of time It’s no surprise that date nights can be vital for the future health of your marriage. According to a study published by the Australian government’s Institute of Family Studies, the longest-married couples held up memories and shared experiences as a chief factor in their relationships. How can you do this? • End-of-an-errand date. Stop at a coffee house on your way home from a shopping trip. Don’t take it to go, stay for a little while and talk about stuff other than Christmas. Enjoy this time together. • Romantic drives. Think there’s so much running around that you and your spouse don’t have time for a date? Write questions on small strips of paper and put them in an envelope. Have the passenger pull them out to read while the other is driving. Who said a trip to the mall store can’t be romantic? GIFT #3: The gift of perspective Has all this talk about shopping and running around distracted you from the true meaning of Christmas? Do you or your spouse go into hyper drive when the holiday season approaches? Does this stress create tension in your marriage? Set aside some time to reflect on the Christmas story. HEALTHY HOLIDAY EATING TIPS The latest buzz among health-conscious consumers, “eating clean,” is a concept that stresses healthy, whole, unprocessed foods. Here are the seven core principles of Eating Clean: 1. Choose whole, natural foods and seek to eliminate or minimize processed foods. Processed foods are anything in a box, bag, can or package and although there are a few exceptions (like a bag of fresh green beans), majority of your foods should be fresh. 2. Choose unrefined over refined foods. While it may not be possible all the times, you can up your intake of whole grains like brown rice, millet, amaranth and quinoa. Beans and legumes are also important. Clean sugars include honey, maple syrup and dehydrated sugar cane juice. 3. Include some protein, carbohydrate and fat at every meal. We often lack protein, especially in the early part of the day, like at breakfast and lunch. Protein is an important muscle-builder and it can also help curb your appetite. When eaten throughout the day, it keeps us feeling full longer. 4. Watch out for fat, salt and sugar. This is easier than you think, particularly if you’ve cut out processed foods, which are responsible for most of our excess calories and high levels of fat, sugar and salt. Clean foods are usually naturally low in all of these ingredients. 5. Eat five to six small meals throughout the day. This usually pans out into three main meals and two or three hefty snacks. Eating this way prevents you from skipping meals and overeating. It also keeps your blood sugar levels steady so energy doesn’t lag. 6. Don’t drink your calories. High calorie drinks like specialty coffees and soft drinks, tack on an extra 400-500 calories a day. Choose water first. 7. Get moving. Regular physical activity is a must for many reasons. Not only does it decrease fat, strengthen and build muscle and help you burn more energy at rest, it keeps your heart, lungs and bones healthy and strong. Courtesy of cookinglight.com

We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight. RUOK PROGRAM Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

Getting Someone a Musical Instrument for Christmas? Don’t forget the Music Lessons! Piano • Guitar • Bass Guitar • Violin • Viola • Cello • Voice Drums • Flute • Clarinet • And More... ALL IN ONE LOCATION!

Are we the right music school for you? We are less than 6 miles from you, located at 23922 Cinco Village Center Blvd! The Conservatory of Music currently teaches over 21,000 private music lessons per year. More music students take lessons at The Conservatory of Music than at any other music school in Katy.

CONSIDER FIVE BENEFITS OF BECOMING A CONSERVATORY STUDENT: 1. Piano, guitar, bass guitar, violin, viola, voice and drum lessons in one location. Schedule lessons for different children at the same time - saves hours of driving and waiting. 2. The largest & most qualified teaching faculty in Katy. Between our two locations, in Cinco Ranch and North Katy, we have over 30 instructors, all with either University training or professional performance experience. Our music instructors are dedicated to learning about your personal musical goals and in helping you to achieve them. In addition to their teaching credentials, our instructors have warm personalities, are extremely friendly and dedicated to teaching you the style of music that you want to learn. 3. Open 6 days a week to fit your busy schedule. 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Saturday 4. Free, all inclusive, “optional” recitals so that your family & friends can share in your musical journey. Approximately every May and December, our students have the option of performing in our recitals. Students are not required to perform but many choose to. Parents never have to pay admission or any related fees for these recitals. 5. A comfortable waiting room for parents, so that you can relax or get work done while you wait. Instead of waiting in a music retail store showroom, with all the noise and other distractions, our clients enjoy a spacious, professional waiting room with comfortable chairs and magazines. We also provide observation windows on every door so that you can watch your child’s lesson while you wait, or if you prefer, you can sit in on their lessons at any time.

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

Termite and Pest Control

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.
