COMMUNITY HEROES - VOLUNTEER
Be an Everyday Hero Volunteer firefighting is one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have. Community VFD offers free fire training and volunteering is a great way to make a difference personally while having a positive impact in your community. Volunteers can fight fires, drive apparatuses, extract patients from vehicles at accidents scenes and etc. Community VFD also provides emergency medical services (EMS) and provides opportunities for individuals with a Texas EMS certification to serve their community. Visit www.communityvfd.org or email Chief Steve Fowler at sfowler@communityvfd.com.
MARCH GARDENING TIPS VEGETABLES • Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and watermelon.
LAWN • Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and suited to the planting location (shade or sun). • When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers. com/grass.htm. TREES AND SHRUBS • Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers. • Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed. • Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 - 5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before the spring growing season starts.
PLEASE SCOOP YOUR PET’S POOP When you walk your dog, please respect all yards in our neighborhood as well as Bella Terra’s community property. Remember to bring either a scooper and/or plastic bags to pick up the poop and trash it. Thank you.

SPRING BREAK ROAD TRIPS!
Perhaps taking a family trip via plane isn’t a part of the spring break budget this year. No fear! Spending a few days away from Houston is as easy as packing up the car, getting the kids and picking a destination. Check out these ideas: Family road trip number 1: Austin. Under 3 hours from Katy by car with plenty of great food, history and fun. Family road trip number 2: Corpus Christi. This is an excellent destination for beaches, swimming and more. Family road trip number 3: New Braunfels (outside of Austin). This place is jam-packed with fun stuff for kids. Family road trip number 4: San Antonio. Head west on I-10 for 3 hours to arrive at this great Texas destination. Family road trip number 5: DFW. This Texas destination is just a straight shot north from Houston on I-45. Courtesy: chron.com

BEST SPRING OUTDOOR WORKOUT Exercise outdoors! Grab a mat (or towel) and a timer to torch fat with this 10-15-20 outdoor Cardio Meltdown: • 10 Long Jumps: Do a long jump the length of your mat or towel and then shuffle backwards to your start position. • 10 Pushups: Kneeling or full, depending on your fitness level. • 15 Sumo Squats: Stand up with your feet wider than your hips and your toes slightly turned out as you sit back into a squat. • 15 Burpees: Start with a jump and then squat down, place your hands on your mat and jump out into a plank position. Jump feet back towards your hands, pop up into standing position and finish with a clap at the top. • 20 Bicycle Crunches: Lie on your back and bend both knees into your chest, hands clasped behind your head. Find a focal point to the left and right of your body. Look at those two focal points as you twist and crunch to each side, reaching your right elbow to your left knee and vice versa. • 20 Mountain Climbers: Start in a plank position and alternate driving your knees into chest, keeping your hips flat and parallel to the ground. Make sure you time yourself performing the full meltdown and try to beat your best time with your next workout. Courtesy: shape.com

BE WISE - ORGANIZE! It is so easy to keep putting things in your secret pile in that room or area no one sees. But one day someone will notice! Be wise - organize! Here are some easy DIY tips: • Shoe Boxes as DIY Dividers: You can make a completely customizable set with just scissors and shoe boxes. Simply cut the boxes in half by length or width, as needed for your space, then tuck into a drawer. • Picture Frames as Dry-Erase Board: Stay on top of your errands with an eye-catching DIY memo board: Frame a pretty scrap of fabric or wallpaper, hang in a high traffic area and use a dry-erase market to jot down reminders on the glass. • Stepladders as a Bedside Table: This minimalist take on a night table holds only the essentials-a lamp, a smartphone, water-forcing you to edit which items spend the night there. • Magnets as a Medicine Cabinet Organizer: Mount a magnetic strip on the inside of the medicine cabinet door

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www. ftbendliteracy.org. RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
THE SCOUTS ARE COMING
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center For some, there’s nothing more exciting than the arrival of the migratory bird, the Purple Martin. They are the largest of the North American swallows. Flying from South America where they winter, they faithfully return to the same locations every year. March 2016
Bella Terra
The first to arrive are called scouts and they are usually the older males. They are not looking for nesting areas but simply returning to where they nested before. The younger males follow and then the females arrive. Both sexes help build the nest, which will be home to 4 or 5 babies. As soon as the chicks leave the nest, the Martins start congregating in large flocks and roost together in preparation for their trip south.
TRAVERS & TRAVERS A TTORNEYS • M EDIATORS
Have you ever heard anyone say, “Location, location, location?” This is especially true if you want to attract Purple Martins. They are colonial nesting birds, which means they occupy apartment-type houses. Since Purple Martins feed while in flight, they prefer their housing be placed in the open, away from human housing and trees. They eat mosquitos, beetles, wasps, dragonflies and other day-flying insects.
FAMILY LAW
House Sparrows and Starlings can take over your Purple Martin house. They can prevent Martins from nesting, destroy their eggs and kill nestlings. Do some research on the internet and find out how you can become a successful Purple Martin landlord.

We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight. When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.

GIVE A SENIOR THE GIFT OF MOBILITY! KATY AREA RIDE SERVICE NEEDS YOUR HELP DRIVING OLDER ADULTS
Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) is looking for your assistance in transporting seniors in need of personal (hair salon, bank, classes, volunteering, visiting a loved one, taking a pet to the vet) and occasional medical rides. One third of the older adults in your neighborhood live with this loss of independence daily. Rides are provided in your personal vehicles to passengers who are age 65+ and ambulatory (not wheelchair bound, may use walking aids). Time commitment is flexible and you choose the Katy territory in which you want to drive. Volunteers do not provide rides that go east of Barker Cypress, north of Clay Road, west of FM 1463 or south of Bellaire Blvd at the Grand Parkway. Benefits to Volunteer Drivers include the opportunity to help seniors retain independent living, dignity and freedom. Drivers tell us the day(s) and times they are able to drive. Drivers choose if they wait for the senior or return later to pick them up. Drivers must be between 21 years of age and 78 years of age with a good driving record, pass a background check and show proof of insurance coverage (state minimums) as required by the State of Texas. To request a volunteer driver application, call 832-773-8645 or email info@karskaty.org. KARS operates under an official 501(c)(3) that designates it as a transportation service provider for seniors and non-wheelchair bound persons with disabilities.

NATIONAL CHARITY LEAGUE, INC., STAR CHAPTER HONORS SENIOR CLASS On Sunday, January 17th, National Charity League, Inc., Star Chapter (NCL, Inc.) honored members of its graduating class at the chapter’s Class of 2016 Senior Recognition and Presentation. The black-tie affair took place at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square.
