NATIONAL ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH November has been designated National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and it is about time we recognize the 5 million Americans living with this disease and the 10 million family caregivers that make it possible. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that attacks brain cells diminishing a person’s memory and becoming fatal over time. It impairs memory, thinking and behavior and is responsible for more than 50 percent of all dementia cases. The onset of symptoms most often develops slowly and worsen over time, until they become severe enough to interfere with daily life. The fear of Alzheimer’s may be in part due to the fact that there is no cure and the treatments that exist for Alzheimer’s are not extremely effective in slowing the progression of the disease. Current drugs for Alzheimer’s help to subdue the symptoms for only half of those who try them and on average, the drugs are only effective for a year.

NETWORK TEXAS HOSTED BENEFITS FOR SHIELD BEARER

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

Network Texas, a unique business networking group that supports their members and the community, hosted two Parties with Purpose benefiting Shield Bearer on September 16th in Katy and October 21st in Tomball. Proceeds from these events directly benefit Shield Bearer’s human trafficking recovery and intimate partner violence prevention programs. Houston is the number one human trafficking hub in the country due to interstate access and the close proximity to the border and Port of Houston. Many victims of human trafficking are children and in desperate need of mental health services for trauma, addiction and depression. Intimate partner violence (also known as domestic violence or dating violence) is the most common cause of injury for women ages 18-44. As many as 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner, which equates to more than 10 million people per year in the United States. The community is encouraged to learn more and get involved.

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs

FALL LAWN CARE - QUICK TIP!

Fall brings back ideal growing conditions for your lawn. Cool nights, warm days, ample rainfall and morning dew are just about as good as it gets for grass. Now the lawn is ready to grow again and is looking for the nutrients it needs to recover from summer damage. Some experts will say this is the single most important lawn feeding of the year.

Established 1967

Apply your final feeding of Scotts® Turf Builder® WinterGuard® Fall Lawn Food right before the winter months, when grass is prepping for a winter nap. This will strengthen roots and increase nitrogen storage for an early spring green up and a healthier lawn next year. Courtesy of scotts.com

THANKSGIVING - BY THE CALORIES!

The average American consumes approximately three times the recommended daily dose of calories on the nation’s favorite turkey-stuffed holiday. If you can stomach it, here’s a look at Thanksgiving eating, by the numbers: • 1,500: The amount of calories an average woman needs each day • 2,000: The amount of calories an average man needs each day • 3,000: The estimated amount of calories in a typical Thanks giving meal, including turkey, side dishes and dessert • 5,000 to 6,000: The estimated amount of calories people consume throughout Thanksgiving Day, roughly triple the recommended daily intake • 590: The amount of calories in an average serving of a tradi tionally prepared Thanksgiving turkey • 30: Grams of fat in an average serving of a traditionally prepared Thanksgiving turkey • 400: The amount of calories in a softball-sized serving of stuffing • 25: Grams of fat in a softball-sized serving of stuffing or “the amount of fat you’d gobble up in a large, fast food serving of french fries,” says Darlene Zimmerman at the Detroit Free Press • 323: The amount of calories in a small, lightbulb-sized slice of pumpkin pie • 456: The amount of calories in a small, lightbulb-sized slice of pecan pie • 90: Calories in a typical three-ounce glass of red wine • 3,500: The amount of calories needed for the body to create one extra pound of fat • 500 to 700: Calories that healthy dieters should aim for in their Thanksgiving meal, as recommended by health experts at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center • 60: The number of minutes it takes for a 150-pound person to burn 500 calories by jogging at a moderate pace, according to Livestrong.com. BLACK FRIDAY TIPS • The best deals are usually on the big-ticket items (think over $500). If you’re thinking about buying a big-ticket item, Black Friday is a good time. • The goal of major retailers is to keep you in the store! They want you to do more of your shopping in their store to increase market share. Be aware and don’t get distracted or overwhelmed. Plan ahead and know the store layout! • Bring someone with you to split up and conquer tasks! • Popular items, especially Black Friday Doorbusters, will sell out and aren’t available via raincheck. If there’s a deal you have to have, make sure you get it early! • Check online: some deals can be had online without the inperson hassle. But many deals are only in stores or only online, so make sure you double check! • Wear comfy shoes, bring snacks, water and stay patient, don’t let it get to you too much! There’s always CyberMonday! Courtesy of marioarmstrong.com/blackfriday

DEER ANTLERS

Serving Katy, West Houston and Sugarland

BY CHERYL CONLEY, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER Male deer or bucks, grow and lose their antlers every year. The antlers begin growing in early spring and by late summer they are fully-grown. Deer antlers are one of the fastest growing tissues known to man and can grow up to ½ inch per day. While growing, which can take up to 4 months, they are covered in a soft, hairy skin called velvet. Velvet is a living tissue composed of a high concentration of nerve cells and blood vessels. Velvet provides protection, blood and nutrients to the antlers. Because of the increased nerve cells on the antlers, they become more sensitive to pain than any other part of the body. Bucks are quick to learn the exact location of their antlers and learn to negotiate their way through wooded areas to avoid contact with limbs and other structures that will cause them pain. In early fall, a hardened ring forms at the base of the antlers and the blood supply to the velvet is shut off. The deer will begin rubbing the velvet off in preparation for the rutting or mating season. During rut, bucks want to show their dominance. Their antlers are used during sparring matches with other bucks. Early in the season, these matches are nothing more than some pushing and shoving but by the peak of the breeding season, they can turn into full-blown fights. After rut, the buck’s testosterone levels fall. This causes a weakening of the tissue and bone. The antlers simply fall off. There is no pain or discomfort to the animal. In a few weeks, the cycle begins again and new antlers will begin to grow. An interesting fact is that there are antlered does. Yes, I said DOES. A doe with velvet covered antlers usually has normal female reproductive organs and can still produce fawns. Hardened antlers on a doe are almost always male pseudohermophrodites, which means the “condition in which an individual of one sex has external genitalia superficially resembling those of the other sex.” These animals have female external genitalia, but have male organs (testicles) internally. TWRC Wildlife Center’s mission is to promote environmental conservation through public education and rehabilitation of native Texas wildlife. If you’d like to know how you can get involved, call 713-468-TWRC or go to www.twrcwildlifecenter.org.

FORT BEND VOTING CENTERS This November 3rd, Fort Bend County will be changing the way we vote on Election Day. Voters will now be able to cast a ballot at any of 78 Vote Centers. In the past, they could only vote at one assigned polling location. About one third of the Election Day polling places are new, so voters are encouraged to visit the Fort Bend Election website, www.fortbendvotes.org in order to find a convenient voting location.

ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP

Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS IN FORT BEND COUNTY All dogs and cats are required to be registered and licensed with Fort Bend County Animal Services. To be registered, dogs and cats must be current on all vaccinations and have a rabies shot done by a veterinarian in the State of Texas. The cost is $1 for spayed and neutered dogs and cats and $5 for dogs and cats who have not been spayed or neutered. Senior citizens may register their dog or cat for $1. The cost of all licenses is for 1 year only and must be renewed annually. To register your dog or cat, send rabies certificates, proof of spay/neutering (vet bill), along with a money order to Fort Bend County Animal Services, 1210 Blume Road, Rosenberg, TX 77471. A license will then be sent to the pet owner. See www.fortbendcountytx.gov/index.aspx?page=565 for more information.

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”

Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

TRAVERS & TRAVERS A TTORNEYS • M EDIATORS

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

FAMILY LAW Licensed in Texas and Missouri

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”

RUOK PROGRAM

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
