GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart

they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

Happy Halloween!

Many kids (and parents) look forward to Halloween for the candy treats more than the festive costumes. For some fun facts on your favorite Halloween food including snack-size bars, gum and candy corn, read on. You might be surprised by how many other parents are dipping into their kids’ trick-or-treat stashes. • Halloween night nibbles. Bite-sized chocolate candies are the most popular type of candy to be included in Halloween activities (76 percent), followed by bite-sized non-chocolate candies (30 percent). • Favorite finds. Eighty-four percent of kids say candy and gum are their favorite treats to receive when trick-or-treating.

• Snack-size snitches. Parents admit that their favorite treats to sneak from their kids’ trick-or-treat bags are snack-size chocolate bars (70 percent sneak these), candy-coated chocolate pieces (40 percent), caramels (37 percent) and gum (26 percent). • Sweets for the sweet. Only 7 percent of kids (6-11 years) say they would keep their candy all to themselves if they received lots of Halloween treats. Instead, most would either share some with their family (66 percent), their friends (64 percent) or their teachers (26 percent). Courtesy: nymetroparents

GREEN TIPS- HAVE FEWER BUGS IN YOUR LIFE 1. Make homemade bug repellant: Measure 2/3 cup witch hazel into measuring cup. Add olive or grapeseed oil to make approximately 1 cup of liquid. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, making sure it does not contain sugar. Add 30-40 drops of assorted essential oils (lavender, lemongrass, basil, & rosemary are especially effective). Add 4-5 whole cloves to the liquid. Carefully pour mixture into an empty spray bottle (be sure to carefully label bottle). Shake well before using. Apply liberally to skin to keep bugs away. 2. Wear less blue: Scientists have found that mosquitoes are drawn to darker colors, with blue often cited as one of the worst offenders. So the lighter the color of your clothes, the less likely you are to attract those pesky bugs. Pinning a dryer sheet to your shirt or shorts can also help to protect you; mosquitoes dislike the scent of the sheets. 3. Eat more garlic: Many homeopathic practitioners say that one of the most effective ways to repel mosquitoes and other itchy pests is to eat plenty of garlic. This may or may not be true, but it’s good for lots of other things in your body, so don’t be afraid to embrace the stinky rose. If you don’t want to increase your garlic intake, you can mix 1 part garlic juice with 5 parts water and then dip strips of cotton fabric in the liquid; hang the strips strategically through parts of your home or campsite where insects gather. 4. Use your garden strategically: Mosquitoes and other insects hate a laundry list of plants -lavender, rosemary, basil, geraniums, citronella, lemon balm, eucalyptus, spearmint, & marigolds can all be added to your flowerbeds or garden (especially near doors) to keep your yard naturally bug-free. Mosquitoes also detest catnip, so make your cat happy & bugs unhappy - plant some.

CHILD ABUSE & NEGLECT REPORTS

The start of the school year can be a new and exciting time for children, but it can lead to more reports of abuse and neglect as faculty, staff and other parents notice signs of maltreatment children may have suffered during the break. Teachers and school officials are mandated reporters, so it is not unusual for there to be a spike in reports when school resumes. The increase in reports often leads to more children entering the overburdened child welfare system, creating a need for more CASA volunteers to speak up for these children. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteers are everyday members of the community that are specially trained and appointed by judges to advocate for children’s best interests in court. These volunteers are appointed to one child or sibling group and speak to any and all relevant contacts in their lives, such as teachers, foster parents and therapists. CASA volunteers get to know these children individually and gather information about their unique physical, emotional and educational needs. They relay their recommendations to the court in an effort to help these children move out of the temporary system and into safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible. In Fort Bend County there have been 220 children in the child welfare system this year. Child Advocates of Fort Bend has served 100% of the children, but we’ve seen a 30% increase of children coming into care this year alone, a number that is likely to grow now that the school has begun. Child Advocates of Fort Bend needs more compassionate, dedicated volunteers to speak up for these vulnerable children. Please consider being a voice for children in need by becoming a CASA volunteer. ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP

Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.

PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in afenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’

24

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives.

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston. org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 large onion, chopped 1 large green bell pepper, chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 1 pound andouille or smoked sausage, sliced 1/4 inch thick 4 cloves garlic, minced salt and pepper to taste Creole seasoning to taste 6 cups chicken broth 1 bay leaf 1 rotisserie chicken, boned and shredded DIRECTIONS Heat the oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. When hot, whisk in flour. Continue whisking until the roux has cooked to the color of chocolate milk, 8 to 10 minutes. Be careful not to burn the roux. If you see black specks in the mixture, start over. Stir onion, bell pepper, celery and sausage into the roux; cook 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook another 5 minutes.
