Please be sure to visit the Berkshire website at www.berkshirecai.com and sign up to “Join Our Mailing List.” Check the website often for community updates, events and other important community information. Information on the recycling program is on the Website.
Berkshire’s annual movie night will be held at the Carmike Theater at Yorktown on Thursday, December 5, 2013. This year’s movie is FREE BIRDS, an animated film with voices by Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson & Amy Poehler. Rated PG. The movie will start at 6:30 PM. We will be in a theater dedicated to Berkshire and the event includes the movie, popcorn and soft drink.
If you notice any suspicious activity in the community, please call the Harris County Sheriff ’s Department nonemergency number at 713-221-6000 and provide as many details as possible.
HOLIDAY DECORATING CONTEST This year Berkshire will have a holiday decorating contest. Winners will be judged on appropriateness, creativity and aesthetic appeal. All interested parties should make sure that they have the decorations completed by December 20, 2013; at that time our committee will travel the neighborhood to start judging and make our selections. The winner will have a sign placed in their yard and that recognition will continue until the first week of 2014. (The winner will be announced in the February newsletter.) We look forward to having a great competition and may the Best Decorated Yard Win! Submitted by, Leon Johnson Jr. Beautification Committee
There will be brief community updates announced from 6:00-6:20 PM. Please remember to bring your new stuffed toy for Berkshire’s annual donation to underprivileged children and to arrive in time to allow for getting refreshments, etc.
TENNIS COURT REPAIRS Due to the continued vandalism to the tennis court gate lock, the lock is being removed. It will no longer require a key for entrance. Please be courteous to all players and limit your time on the court to 2 hours if others are waiting. A proposal for repairing the fence’s mesh covering is being obtained and will be repaired.
HOME SECURITY TIPS DOORS: • Use your locks - a lock is only useful if you use it. • Make sure your doorways are visible from the street and not obscured by shrubs, etc. WINDOWS: • Make sure your windows have good locking mechanisms. • Make sure windows are visible from the street and not obscured by shrubs, etc. LANDSCAPE: • Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed to prevent concealment for a potential burglar. LIGHTING: • Timers on lights give your house the lived-in look while you are away. ALARMS: • Remember, like a lock, an alarm is only valuable if you use it.

TRASH IN & AROUND THE COMMUNITY
PANTERAS HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR December 13, 2013 at 7PM Tickets are only $5
Join us for an evening of holiday music and dance Performance in the Auditorium CYPRESS SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL 7909 FRY RD CYPRESS TX 77433 Hosted by the Pantera dance team Contact: jschoth@comcast.net
We have a contractor on property every Thursday who does odd jobs and picks up trash around the community. The problem with trash in and around the community is increasing. Please help us keep the community clean by not littering and taking the time to pick up any trash you notice on your street and/or around your home. We have a volunteer in the community who is interested in starting a “Clean Up Committee” to assist with this problem. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact PCMI.
PARKING ON THE STREET
The Association receives numerous complaints a day regarding cars parked in the street. Parking in the street not only looks bad but also creates a safety hazard. Please refrain from parking in the street as it is against the Deed Restrictions. Vehicles should be parked in the garage or in the driveway at all times.
RUNNING A BUSINESS FROM YOUR HOME
The Association has become aware of some homeowners running a business from their home. Please note that the Berkshire community is a “single family” home community and running a business from your home is strictly prohibited. These homes are being monitored by our contracted Harris County Sheriff, as well as our property manager. Be advised that the Board of Directors will take all measures, including legal action, to see that this practice is stopped.

NOTICE TO PET OWNERS We love dogs - we really do. That’s why the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law on association property. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you. We also love our community. That’s another reason the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law - so all residents may enjoy our community. We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.
CENTERPOINT ENERGY STREETLIGHT OUT??? To report a burned out streetlight, you may contact CenterPoint Energy at 713207-2222 or online at cnp.centerpointenergy.com/outage. Please know the number that is on the pole and street address of the pole when reporting.

Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, springblooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

DON’T throw away a pile of stuff when it can find a use elsewhere and keep our landfills a little emptier (and save you tax money). • Excess paper and cardboard gift wrapping can be recycled at the local schools in the yellow and green bins. • Plastic packaging can be recycled using your curbside bins.

• Clothing, shoes and household items can always be recycled through charitable organizations like individual church thrift shops, Salvation Army, Purple Heart, etc. Aside from helping your neighbor during the holiday period, you can also get a tax write-off for such contributions. Or you can sell gently used items at local resale shops (again, money in your pocket). • Electronics can be recycled at the local Goodwill office on Hwy. 6, just south of West Little York. A tax write-off for your donation just before the end of the year is a bonus! • Old cell phones can be donated to local women’s shelters, who wipe them and donate them to women in danger of abuse. • Old eyeglasses can be donated Lion’s International (www.lionsclubs.org/EN/ our-work/sight-programs/eyeglassrecycling). We’ll continue this list in the next two newsletters. 1) Athletic shoes - Tired, broken-down, “fragrant” running shoes are most generally directed to the trash, but given our penchant for kicks, that’s a lot of sneakers stinking up the landfill. introduce them to one of Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe recycling bins (www.mnn.com/lifestyle/responsible-living/blogs/recycleyour-athletic-shoes-at-nike). Nike in turn will incorporate them into the raw material called Nike Grind, which is used in everything from running tracks to shoe soles to zippers. 2) Bicycles - Americans send more than 15 million bicycles out to pasture every year. But rather than throwing them in the dump, you can give your old two-wheelers a second life by donating them to Bikes of the World (www.bikesfortheworld. org), which collects, refurbishes and donates bikes to lowerincome people and select institutions in developing countries. 3) Bike tools and gear - With a similar mission to Bikes of the World, Bikes Not Bombs (https://bikesnotbombs.org) takes bicycle bits, pieces and gear in addition to the bikes themselves. They accept parts, tools, broken components such as cracked frames, worn tires, tubes with holes, helmets, bags, lights, pumps, locks, cycle clothing, etc. They restore bikes and gear and deliver them overseas to economic development projects in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Bikes that don’t get shipped often land in the group’s youth programs where teens learn bicycle safety and mechanic skills while earning bikes to keep for themselves. 4) Bras - There comes a time in every bra’s life when it just has to move on and bras aren’t generally the kind of clothing we women toss in the “to donate” pile. But the Bosom Buddy Program (www.mnn.com/lifestyle/natural-beauty-fashion/ blogs/recycle-your-bra), started by a textile recycling company in Arizona, wants your weary bras. After sprucing them up, they donate the revamped brassieres to women’s shelters or other programs that help women gain self-sufficiency. 5) Brita water filters - Ditching plastic water bottles for filtered water is a resourceful move, even if you are left with spent water filters. But if you use Brita products, you’re in uck (www.mnn.com/lifestyle/recycling/stories/save-britafilters-for-recycling). They have teamed up with the company Preserve and between the two, they are recycling Brita plastic pitcher filter casings into Preserve’s eco-friendly, 100-percent recycled products such as toothbrushes, cups and cutting boards. Also cool: the activated carbon within the filters is regenerated for alternative use or converted into energy. 6) Carpeting - When it comes time to reveal the lovely hard-

wood floor buried underneath that mod shag carpeting, find a carpet-reclamation facility (http://carpetrecovery.org) to take it for recycling. You can also check with individual carpet makers, many of which have recycling programs. 7) Compact fluorescent light bulbs - The mercury content makes CFLs a trickier disposal problem than basic bulbs, leaving many people confused about what to do with them once the light has been extinguished. But now both Ikea and Home Depot provide CFL recycling programs and other lighting stores are also beginning to accept these bulbs as well. If neither of these chain stores are nearby, see 5 ways to dispose of old CFLs for other ideas (www.mnn.com/yourhome/at-home/stories/5-ways-to-dispose-of-old-cfls). in his family graduated from college, even though his parents made a meager living as custodians. Pham talks about viewing circumstances as opportunities. The ninth grade PACE classes sat engrossed throughout his presentation and asked lots of questions afterwards. One student commented, “This was exactly what I needed!”
CY-LAKES SHOWS ITS BIG HEART, AGAIN!
CY-LAKES AP SHARES STORY OF THE AMERICAN DREAM WITH PACE CLASSES
Recently, Cy-Lakes Assistant Principal Hoang Pham shared his story of achieving the American Dream with ninth grade PACE classes. Beginning with his birth in Viet Nam, Mr. Pham relived the journey to America when his family escaped from Viet Nam in 1975 during the war. Using photographs in his Power Point presentation, Pham brought his journey to life for the ninth grade audience.
CY-LAKES DIANA LOPEZ NAMED STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Among the many interesting stories he told, Pham spoke of how his family, consisting of two parents and ten children, split up as they escaped Viet Nam. After experiencing many remarkable events while traveling on boats at sea, including surviving on powdered milk and water for a period of time, Pham’s family eventually made it to America where they got an American family sponsor, which helped them settle in Port Arthur, Texas.
Cypress Lakes High School senior Diana Lopez was named student of the week and featured on the CFISD website during the month of November. Lopez has won numerous awards and accolades throughout her years in high school. Recently, she was selected by The Center for Hearing and Speech (CHS) to participate in the seventh annual Via Colori street painting festival, joining nine fellow emerging high school artists in the Via Apprendista section, creating a 6-foot by 6-foot street art mural.
One of the messages Pham drives home to students is that education is important to their futures. Eight of the ten children

orable mention for her art and writing. She has also been a Scholastic Writing American Voices Award Nominee and a Recognized Hispanic National Scholar. When asked about her passion and what inspires her, Lopez says, “I am passionate about languages; politics; social issues regarding race, gender and class; animals, literature and art. My inspiration spawns from different cultures and languages.” She hopes to attend the University of Texas at Austin and travel the world.
Cy-Lakes staff and students have shown their big hearts in a big way, again! Each year the school focuses on raising money for the annual Heart Walk to fight heart disease. This year the goal was $3,500. Principal Sarah Harty encouraged students and staff to donate, pointing out that if everyone just donated $1 each, the goal could be met. However, with the dedication of the PALS class, clubs, students and staff, Cy-Lakes raised $5,117.12, well above the goal that was set. As donations poured in, neon hearts were given out to donors. Each year, those donating money to the Heart Walk at Cy-Lakes receive a neon heart sticker to wear. For the past five years, Central Tape and Label has donated the neon hearts to Cy-Lakes High School. It is the combination of all these efforts that has resulted in CyLakes donating over $15,000 to heart research over the past years.

CFISD CELEBRATES 75 YEARS Cypress-Fairbanks ISD was consolidated on Dec. 9, 1939, which means our 75th Anniversary is around the corner. The actual anniversary date is Dec. 9, 2014 and various projects are currently underway to make it a memorable 2014 - 2015 school year. Details are now available on the CFISD website at www.cfisd.net/75. The first event of the celebration will be a Diamond Jamboree at the Berry Center in August, 2014. During this event, we will identify 75 honorees and we need your help. The anniversary honoree designation committee is looking for people or families who have significantly impacted the CFISD community and district during the last 75 years. We want to particularly identify those that have truly captured the anniversary philosophy: “Our children. Our schools. Our community.” Please consider submitting a nomination and review the attached application. For more information on the anniversary, email 75th@cfisd.net.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00.
