ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ART CONTEST! Don’t mess with Texas® and Keep Texas Beautiful invite you to set aside time for their Elementary School Art Contest. Did you know that Texans ages 16 to 34 are the most likely to litter? We need to do all we can to motivate young Texans to keep our environment free of trash. This contest is a great way to share the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful litter prevention messages with your elementary school students so that they learn good habits from an early age. Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our environment, elementary school students from across Texas can submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal, composition and age appropriateness. Students win prizes and have their art featured. Students who create the top 13 winning designs will have their artwork assigned to a month or featured on the cover of the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 tablet donated by H-E-B and Central Market. All student winners and their artwork will be showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful websites and social media sites, at the 2016 Keep Texas Beautiful annual conference, in media announcements and through other means as appropriate. Teachers win, too! Teachers representing students who produce the top 13 designs will each win a $100 H-E-B and Central Market gift card. See Official Contest Rules for more information. Everything you’ll need to participate including fact sheets, official rules and the contest entry form and agreement is posted at DontMessWithTexas.org. You can also download a flyer to display at your school to generate interest. The contest is through April 8, 2016. All entries must be submitted or postmarked on or before April 8, 2016. Winners will be announced in early May. Contact Keep Texas Beautiful at 1-800-Clean-Up or info@ktb.org for any questions regarding the contest.

GARDENING TIPS FOR FEBRUARY

Bear Creek Animal Clinic Pet Wellness Fair

VEGETABLES • Plant beets, broccoli (plants), brussel sprouts (plants), cabbage (plants), carrots, cauliflower (plants), celery, chinese cabbage (plants), chives collards (plants), endive, kale, lettuce (leaf and head), mustard, onions (plants), parsley, garden peas, radishes, rutabagas, spinach, tomato (seeds) and turnips.

Saturday, February 20th, (8am-11:30am)

FLOWERS • Plants to set: Alyssum, Calendula, Canterbury Bells, Carnations, Columbine, Cornflower, Daisies, Delphinium, Hollyhock, Larkspur, Lobelia, Nicotiana, Pansy, Petunia, Phlox (Louisiana), Shrimp Plant, Snapdragon, Stock and Verbena.

TREES AND SHRUBS • Finish all transplanting, get everything in the ground for a good spring spurt of growth. Transplant balled and burlap, container-grown, bare-root deciduous evergreen trees, shrubs, roses and vines while still dormant. • Finish pruning roses. Weed and cultivate lightly all beds. Replenish mulch as needed. • Control early spring insects like thrips on glads and aphids on young tender growth. Spray with Malathion, Diazinon or Orthene. • At the end of February: peach, apple and pear fruit must be thinned to insure quality production at harvest. • Give groundcovers a haircut. They will spread faster. • Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

BEST SUPER BOWL PARTY EVER!! Impress your guests by hosting the best super bowl party this year on February 7th. Here are some FOOD tips that may TRIM the waistline on this traditionally food fest football fun-day: 1. Create a Food Free space: Keeping snacks in another room will help everyone save calories. Plus not having the bowl of chips in front of the TV will curb mindless eating. 2. Low-cal foods first: Instead of bringing out the chicken wings right away, offer lower-calorie foods during the first half of the game, such as a spread of fresh veggies and a lightened-up dip. 3. Give classic recipes a healthy twist: Use nonfat Greek yogurt in place of sour cream for dips. Cook Buffalo-marinated chicken tenders instead of chicken wings: you’ll still get that finger-licking yumminess while slashing your intake of saturated fat and sodium. And skip the local pizza delivery; instead, set up stations for everyone to make his/her own healthier and tastier pizza at home. 4. Downsize your dishes. Downsize serving bowls from large to medium. Serve up the tortilla chips in a medium bowl rather than a large one. Same goes for the guacamole: serve that in a small bowl. 5. Be drink aware: choose taller skinny glasses instead of short wide ones. Bigger tip: serve only what your kiddo can enjoy! Courtesy: eatinwell.com

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY - 24/7, 365 Valentine’s Day is just one day on February 14th. Why not make it Valentine’s Day each and every day by making those you love feel extra special, including yourself. Here’s how:

wonderful traits and unique gifts. They are entitled to their own decisions, hobbies, goals and hopes. 3. Be generous and loving in all your dealings with your partner. Give unconditionally, rather than wanting something back in return. Instead, commit 100% to doing things for your partner and with zero expectation. 4. Always have integrity. Commit to tell your partner the total truth, as honesty is one of the key things people want in a relationship. Knowing they can trust you builds a zone of safety and comfort around them. 5. Resolve your differences as soon as they happen. Conflict actually fuels a genuinely passionate partnership. So accept responsibility for your part of the issue at stake and do not blame your partner. 6. Do not criticize. It is ok to complain but not criticize. Your partner is doing the best they can – support them in becoming an even better person. NEVER put your partner down in front of other people. 7. Create a haven for your partner. Make them feel so safe and secure with you that they drop all their defensiveness. Be considerate of your partner’s feelings and treat them with the utmost care and kindness. 8. Let go of the past. All relationships have their difficulties. Remember only the lessons learnt and forget the details. Weather the stormy moments and savor the memory of sunny days. 9. Have a fun date with your partner regularly and often. Give the relationship the same commitment you made when you first met - simply put each other first! Courtesy: lifehack.org

1. Create & share a vision of your dream life together. Make the fulfillment of your short term and long term needs the criteria for choosing a partner and being in a relationship. 2. Accept your partner just as they are. Your partner is a special person - the only one in the world like them, with their own

The area was designed for a playground, the swimming pool and clubhouse, a volleyball court and the tennis courts. Unfortunately soccer playing, with or without the nets, had caused a disturbance to some of our neighbors whose yards back up to the recreation area, especially in the evening hours. Moreover “enthusiastic play” caused damage to the fences resulting in expensive repairs. Each time a broken fence picket had to be removed, then a new one purchased, stained and installed. It was not a big job, but time consuming and costly. The grassy area also was becoming very worn to the point where soon it may

have had to be re-sodded. We also had many complaints about soccer being played on the tennis court, causing damage to the tennis nets and preventing residents from peacefully using the courts for tennis. Finally, as has been a problem with our other recreation facilities, we found non-residents using our property for playing soccer. Our sheriff deputy patrols are assisting us when we can identify trespassers. We want our own residents to have access and enjoyment of our recreation facilities for their intended purposes.

MANY PAIRS OF EYES A Sheriff’s deputy has only one pair of eyes. But together, Berkshire residents have a couple of thousand eyes. So when you see any suspicious activity, please call the Sheriff’s Department non-emergency number at 713-221-6000 immediately and provide as many details as possible. For emergencies call 911. And please cooperate with law enforcement officers after the fact to help convict criminals. Remember, for a safe community crime prevention is a cooperative effort.

LOCK CAR DOORS AND PUT AWAY VALUABLES

Many car burglaries occur because valuables are visible in the cars. Bags, purses, phones, GPS’s and laptops are all invitations to criminals. Even if it takes you only a few minutes to stop at a store or drop off the kids, put valuables out of sight. Some victims make the crime easier by leaving car doors unlocked. Car burglars have been know to move through a neighborhood trying door handles for unlocked cars. Simple advice: always lock them.

HOME SECURITY TIPS

DOORS: • Use your locks - a lock is only useful if you use it. • Make sure your doorways are visible from the street and not obscured by shrubs, etc. WINDOWS: • Make sure your windows have good locking mechanisms. • Make sure windows are visible from the street and not obscured by shrubs, etc. LANDSCAPE: • Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed to prevent concealment for a potential burglar.

ASK FOR DETAILS ABOUT HOW YOUR MONEY IS SPENT

Some of the major expenses are security through a contract with Harris County and additional coverage by direct contracts with Sheriff’s deputies; landscaping maintenance including the irrigation system; operation of the recreation area (pool, tennis courts and playground); utilities including the lighting bill and the professional management company fees, plus all the related administrative expenses. You also bear the cost when some homeowners do not pay their annual assessment fees. In some cases legal action must be taken and legal expenses must be paid before delinquent debts are collected.

Such action is taken because some homeowners would leave the rest of us bearing their share of the expenses. You have a stake in your community and you have a voice if you care enough to exercise it. We all have a common interest in seeing that our money is spent prudently with adequate internal controls and that Berkshire remains an attractive and comfortable place to live. When you see a problem, let it be known, but come with a positive suggestion for improvement. Remember we are all in this together and want the best for Berkshire. The Board of Directors meets on the third Monday of each month and the meeting is open to all homeowners. If you wish to speak at a meeting, contact the management company (281870-0585) to be placed on the agenda. The annual meeting of homeowners will be announced in the near future. When was the last time you attended?

BERKSHIRE WEBSITE

Please be sure to visit the Berkshire website at www.berkshirecai. com. Check the website often for community updates, events and other important community information. Information on the recycling program is on the Website.

PARKING ON THE STREET

The Association receives numerous complaints a day regarding cars parked in the street. Parking in the street not only looks bad but also creates a safety hazard. Please refrain from parking in the street as it is against the Deed Restrictions. Vehicles should be parked in the garage or in the driveway at all times.

GRAFFITI

Please report any graffiti you may see in the community to PCMI.

8

ADDRESS STONES

Please be certain that shrubs are trimmed away from address stones. This is very important for 911 emergency vehicles.

FLAT CURBS

Please refrain from parking vehicles on the flat curbs. Vehicles parked on the curbs eventually cause damage and deterioration. Further note that storage of vehicles on streets or within road right-of-way is specifically prohibited.

LOOSE DOGS

To report loose dogs please contact Harris County Animal Control at 281-999-3191.

NOTICE TO PET OWNERS

We love dogs - we really do. That’s why the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law on association property. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you. We also love our community. That’s another reason the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law - so all residents may enjoy our community. We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.

CENTERPOINT ENERGY STREETLIGHT OUT???

To report a burned out streetlight, you may contact CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222 or online at cnp.centerpointenergy. com/outage. Please know the number that is on the pole and street address of the pole when reporting.

BERRY CENTER TO HOST UIL WRESTLING STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS The 2016 University Interscholastic League Wrestling State Championships will take place at Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District’s Berry Center. A second conference was added to boys and girls wrestling competition in 2013, doubling the number of qualifiers and matches. The 2013 Wrestling State Championships were expanded to three days and two locations. This marks the first time the UIL Wrestling State Championships will be held in the Houston area. The Curtis Culwell Center in Garland hosted the UIL Wrestling State Championships in 2014 and 2015. Prior to that, the UIL Wrestling State Championships had been held in Austin since 1999. “The Berry Center is an excellent venue that will allow the UIL more flexibility with the Wrestling State Tournament schedule to provide the best championship experience for student-athletes, coaches and fans,” UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said.

The program provides a loving, Christian environment offering the children weekly chapel, as well as music/movement, library and computer classes. CHURCH AND OTHER RELIGIOUS INFORMATION ST. CUTHBERT EPISCOPAL CHURCH St. Cuthbert is located at 17020 West Road, Houston (the northeast corner of West and Queenston). For more information on any of our events, visit us at www.stcuthbert.org. You are invited to St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church’s Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 9th from 5:30-7 PM. We will eat pancakes and play bingo! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the consumption of all fats and fatty foods on this day coined the name “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through February. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
