CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2015! Happy FATHERS’s Day! MANY PAIRS OF EYES A Sheriff’s deputy has only one pair of eyes. But together, Berkshire residents have a couple of thousand eyes. So when you see any suspicious activity, please call the Sheriff’s Department nonemergency number at 713-221-6000 immediately and provide as many details as possible. For emergencies call 911. And please cooperate with law enforcement officers after the fact to help convict criminals. Remember, for a safe community crime prevention is a cooperative effort.

LOCK CAR DOORS AND PUT AWAY VALUABLES Many car burglaries occur because valuables are visible in the cars. Bags, purses, phones, GPS’s and laptops are all invitations to criminals. Even if it takes you only a few minutes to stop at a store or drop off the kids, put valuables out of sight. Some victims make the crime easier by leaving car doors unlocked. Car burglars have been know to move through a neighborhood trying door handles for unlocked cars. Simple advice: always lock them.

2015 POOL HOURS June 5th - August 23rd: Monday: 12 PM - 8 PM Tuesday: CLOSED Wednesday: 12 PM - 8 PM Thursday: 12 PM - 8 PM Friday: 10 AM - 9 PM Saturday: 10 AM - 9 PM Sunday: 10 AM -8 PM Weekends August 29th - September 13th: Saturday: 10 AM - 9 PM Sunday: 10 AM -8 PM

POOL TAGS AND STICKERS We will use the same orange pool tags that you saved from last year, but you will need to obtain 2015 stickers to attach to the tags. If you need to replace any tags there is a $5 per tag charge. New residents who moved to Berkshire after last year’s pool season will be issued new tags, as well as stickers. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE POOL REGISTRATION FORM BEFORE COMING TO THE POOL. You may be turned away if you do not have the completed form. For blank 2015 POOL REGISTRATION forms go to our website BerkshireCAI.com and click on “Library,” then on the form name. Please download the form, then print it and complete it before coming to pick up your stickers. That will save all of us a lot of time.

Your account with Berkshire must be COMPLETELY PAID, including any late charges. So if you paid your annual maintenance fee, but it was received after January 31st, the accrued interest charges must be paid too, before you come to pick up stickers. If you just paid up recently, you may need proof of such payments.

Labor Day, September 7th: 10 AM -8 PM

Volunteers can help. If you can spare an hour or two on one or both of the registration days, send an email to Gloria Black, our property manager at gloria.black@STServices. com. Just put “I will help” on the subject line and provide your phone number so we can get in touch with you. It’s actually fun meeting our neighbors, especially when

the effort is shared and lines are shorter.

HOME SECURITY TIPS

DOORS: • Use your locks - a lock is only useful if you use it. • Make sure your doorways are visible from the street and not obscured by shrubs, etc. WINDOWS: • Make sure your windows have good locking mechanisms. • Make sure windows are visible from the street and not obscured by shrubs, etc. LANDSCAPE: • Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed to prevent concealment for a potential burglar. LIGHTING: • Timers on lights give your house the livedin look while you are away. ALARMS: • Remember, like a lock, an alarm is only valuable if you use it.

ASK FOR DETAILS ABOUT HOW YOUR MONEY IS SPENT

Do you realize that the budget for Berkshire is in excess of a half million dollars? That’s right, over $500,000. It is the cost to you and the other homeowners to operate and maintain the Berkshire Community Association. Some of the major expenses are security through a contract with Harris County and

Berkshire News

additional coverage by direct contracts with Sheriff’s deputies; landscaping maintenance including the irrigation system; operation of the recreation area (pool, tennis courts and playground); utilities including the lighting bill and the professional management company fees, plus all the related administrative expenses. You also bear the cost when some homeowners do not pay their annual assessment fees. In some cases legal action must be taken and legal expenses must be paid before delinquent debts are collected. Such action is taken because some homeowners would leave the rest of us bearing their share of the expenses. You have a stake in your community and you have a voice if you care enough to exercise it. We all have a common interest in seeing that our money is spent prudently with adequate internal controls and that Berkshire remains an attractive and comfortable place to live. When you see a problem, let it be known, but come with a positive suggestion for improvement. Remember we are all in this together and want the best for Berkshire. The Board of Directors meets on the third Monday of each month and the meeting is open to all homeowners. If you wish to speak at a meeting, contact the management company (281-870-0585) to be placed on the agenda. The annual meeting of homeowners will be announced in the near future. When was the last time you attended?

PARKING ON THE STREET

The Association receives numerous complaints a day regarding cars parked in the street. Parking in the street not only looks bad but also creates a safety hazard. Please refrain from parking in the street as it is against the Deed Restrictions. Vehicles should be parked in the garage or in the driveway at all times.

GRAFFITI

Please report any graffiti you may see in the community to PCMI.

ADDRESS STONES

Please be certain that shrubs are trimmed away from address stones. This is very important for 911 emergency vehicles.

FLAT CURBS

Please refrain from parking vehicles on the flat curbs. Vehicles parked on the curbs eventually cause damage and deterioration. Further note that storage of vehicles on streets or within road right-of-way is specifically prohibited.

LOOSE DOGS

To report loose dogs please contact Harris County Animal Control at 281-999-3191.

NOTICE TO PET OWNERS

We love dogs - we really do. That’s why the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law on association property. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you.

75 OFF New Patient Exam

We also love our community. That’s another reason the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law - so all residents may enjoy our community.

• Advanced Laser Dentistry: Fillings w/o anesthetic • Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy • Affordable, Flexible, No interest payment options.

We trust we can count on you for voluntary compliance with the leash law. We don’t like to call animal control, but we won’t have any choice if your dog is running free.

The NABT asks each state to nominate a single teacher for the Outstanding Biology Teacher national award, based on their impact in the classroom and the community in the field of life science education. Wells said he chose to apply for the award after receiving a letter indicating he had been nominated. The application required four letters of recommendation, out-of-classroom activities he has performed to further the pursuit of excellence in life science education and a 1,000-word essay describing his approach to teaching. Wells, who will take over as president of the Science Teachers Association of Texas (STAT) on June 1st, has also served as president of the Texas Association of Biology Teachers and program chair for the annual CAST conference in 2013. He has worked as a consultant for the National Math and Science Initiative, training teachers in effective AP Environmental Science instructional methods and helping students review for AP tests. He has also served on the district’s DEIC committee for the last eight years and is involved in writing AP Environmental Science curriculum for CFISD. Wells received the congratulatory call from NABT on April 27th.

This story of mortal and immortal paramours set in a mythical forest is one that will cast a spell on lovers of all ages. • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through June. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
