September 2015 PLEASE, NO SOCCER PLAYING AT RECREATION AREA For several reasons, the soccer goals in the recreation area were removed last year. The area was designed for a playground, the swimming pool and clubhouse, a volleyball court and the tennis courts. Unfortunately soccer playing, with or without the nets, had caused a disturbance to some of our neighbors whose yards back up to the recreation area, especially in the evening hours. Moreover “enthusiastic play” caused damage to the fences resulting in expensive repairs. Each time a broken fence picket had to be removed, then a new one purchased, stained and installed. It was not a big job, but time consuming and costly. The grassy area also was becoming very worn to the point where soon it may have had to be re-sodded. We also had many complaints about soccer being played on the tennis court, causing damage to the tennis nets and preventing residents from peacefully using the courts for tennis. Finally, as has been a problem with our other recreation facilities, we found non-residents using our property for playing soccer. Our sheriff deputy patrols are assisting us when we can identify trespassers. We want our own residents to have access and enjoyment of our recreation facilities for their intended purposes.

2015 POOL HOURS Weekends August 29th - September 13th: Saturday: 10 AM - 9 PM Sunday: 10 AM -8 PM Labor Day, September 7th: 10 AM -8 PM

POOL TAGS AND STICKERS

We will use the same orange pool tags that you saved from last year, but you will need to obtain 2015 stickers to attach to the tags. If you need to replace any tags there is a $5 per tag charge. New residents who moved to Berkshire after last year’s pool season will be issued new tags, as well as stickers. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE POOL REGISTRATION FORM BEFORE COMING TO THE POOL. You may be turned away if you do not have the completed form. For blank 2015 POOL REGISTRATION forms go to our website BerkshireCAI.com and click on “Library,” then on the form name. Please download the form, then print it and complete it before coming to pick up your stickers. That will save all of us a lot of time. Your account with Berkshire must be COMPLETELY PAID, including any late charges. So if you paid your annual maintenance fee, but it was received after January 31st, the accrued interest charges must be paid too, before you come to pick up stickers. If you just paid up recently, you may need proof of such payments. Volunteers can help. If you can spare an hour or two on one or both of the registration days, send an email to Gloria Black, our property manager at gloria.black@STServices.com. Just put “I will help” on the subject line and provide your phone number so we can get in touch with you. It’s actually fun meeting our neighbors, especially when the effort is shared and lines are shorter.

MANY PAIRS OF EYES A Sheriff’s deputy has only one pair of eyes. But together, Berkshire residents have a couple of thousand eyes. So when you see any suspicious activity, please call the Sheriff’s Department non-emergency number at 713-221-6000 immediately and provide as many details as possible. For emergencies call 911. And please cooperate with law enforcement officers after the fact to help convict criminals. Remember, for a safe community crime prevention is a cooperative effort.

LOCK CAR DOORS AND PUT AWAY VALUABLES Many car burglaries occur because valuables are visible in the cars. Bags, purses, phones, GPS’s and laptops are all invitations to criminals. Even if it takes you only a few minutes to stop at a store or drop off the kids, put valuables out of sight. Some victims make the crime easier by leaving car doors unlocked. Car burglars have been know to move through a neighborhood trying door handles for unlocked cars. Simple advice: always lock them.

HOME SECURITY TIPS

DOORS: • Use your locks - a lock is only useful if you use it. • Make sure your doorways are visible from the street and not obscured by shrubs, etc. WINDOWS: • Make sure your windows have good locking mechanisms. • Make sure windows are visible from the street and not obscured by shrubs, etc. LANDSCAPE: • Keep trees and shrubbery trimmed to prevent concealment for a potential burglar. LIGHTING: • Timers on lights give your house the lived-in look while you are away.

ASK FOR DETAILS ABOUT HOW YOUR MONEY IS SPENT Do you realize that the budget for Berkshire is in excess of a half million dollars? That’s right, over $500,000. It is the cost to you and the other homeowners to operate and maintain the Berkshire Community Association. Some of the major expenses are security through a contract with Harris County and additional coverage by direct contracts with Sheriff’s deputies; landscaping maintenance including the irrigation system; operation of the recreation area (pool, tennis courts and playground); utilities including the lighting bill and the professional management company fees, plus all the related administrative expenses. You also bear the cost when some homeowners do not pay their annual assessment fees. In some cases legal action must be taken and legal expenses must be paid before delinquent debts are collected. Such action is taken because some homeowners would leave the rest of us bearing their share of the expenses. You have a stake in your community and you have a voice if you care enough to exercise it. We all have a common interest in seeing that our money is spent prudently with adequate internal controls and that Berkshire remains an attractive and comfort-

Please refrain from parking in the street as it is against the Deed Restrictions. Vehicles should be parked in the garage or in the driveway at all times.

NOTICE TO PET OWNERS

www.johnsondentalcypress.com

We love dogs - we really do. That’s why the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law on association property. According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog to run free threatens your dog’s health and welfare and the happiness it brings to you. We also love our community. That’s another reason the association is committed to enforcing the county leash law - so all residents may enjoy our community.

GARDEN TIPS FOR AUGUST • Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.

September 2015

Berkshire

• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.•

LABOR DAY FACTS Labor Day will be celebrated by families around the country with picnics, barbecues, road trips and sports events. It is the last blast of the summer vacation season. Labor Day now is a federal holiday and most Government offices, schools and, businesses are closed. Here are some interesting Labor Day Facts. • Labor Day in Canada began in 1872 in Toronto, but quickly made its way south to the U.S. Originally it began as a significant demonstration demanding rights for workers. • The first U.S. Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union. The Labor Day parade of about 10,000 workers took unpaid leave and marched from City Hall past Union Square uptown to 42nd street and ended in Wendel’s Elm Park at 92nd Street and 9th Avenue for a concert, speeches and a picnic. • Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887. • On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. • What are we celebrating? The contributions and achievements of the 155 million men and women who are in the U.S. workforce. • In the late 1800s the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks to eke out a basic living. Children as young as 5-6 years old worked in factories and mines.

1. Make homemade bug repellant: Measure 2/3 cup witch hazel into measuring cup. Add olive or grapeseed oil to make approximately 1 cup of liquid. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, making sure it does not contain sugar. Add 30-40 drops of assorted essential oils (lavender, lemongrass, basil, & rosemary are especially effective). Add 4-5 whole cloves to the liquid. Carefully pour mixture into an empty spray bottle (be sure to carefully label bottle). Shake well before using. Apply liberally to skin to keep bugs away. 2. Wear less blue: Scientists have found that mosquitoes are drawn to darker colors, with blue often cited as one of the worst offenders. So the lighter the color of your clothes, the less likely you are to attract those pesky bugs. Pinning a dryer sheet to your shirt or shorts can also help to protect you; mosquitoes dislike the scent of the sheets. 3. Eat more garlic: Many homeopathic practitioners say that one of the most effective ways to repel mosquitoes and other itchy pests is to eat plenty of garlic. This may or may not be true, but it’s good for lots of other things in your body, so don’t be afraid to embrace the stinky rose. If you don’t want to increase your garlic intake, you can mix 1 part garlic juice with 5 parts water and then dip strips of cotton fabric in the liquid; hang the strips strategically through parts of your home or campsite where insects gather. 4. Use your garden strategically: Mosquitoes and other insects hate a laundry list of plants -lavender, rosemary, basil, geraniums, citronella, lemon balm, eucalyptus, spearmint, & marigolds can all be added to your flowerbeds or garden (especially near doors) to keep your yard naturally bug-free. Mosquitoes also detest catnip, so make your cat happy & bugs unhappy - plant some.

FALL SEASON LAWN CARE Texans across the state continue to enjoy a grilling summer! The heat gave our plants quite the beating but there is hope to refresh and bring back your garden and lawn to life. Here are some tips on preparing yards for autumn: • Fertilize: best way to remember when to fertilize is with the holiday method - St Patrick’s Day, 4th of July, Labor Day and then Thanksgiving, plus a bonus day before Christmas. • Overseed with annual ryegrass: Bermudagrass goes dormant and turns brown in the winter months, so you can overseed it with annual ryegrass. The ryegrass grows and stays green during the cooler months, then dies out once it gets hot - just as your Bermudagrass starts turning green again. • Prevent winter weeds: Stop pesky winter weeds just like you did summer species: Use a pre-emergence herbicide from mid-October to mid-November. • Finish up mowing: Keep mowing your lawn as it slows down during the fall season. Don’t let it get too long as it goes dormant. Courtesy of bhg.com

THE HARDEST WEEKS OF SCHOOL By the time the September issue is in hands, school will be in session. Kids will be getting adjusted to the normal daily routine they are used to for 9-10 months out of the year. Or will they?

September 2015

The first two weeks of school can be the most difficult - for students, teachers and administration. Here’s why: • New schedule adjustment - sleeping early, waking up early and adhering to a schedule are challenging. • New teachers - equals new classroom policies and procedures, new classroom management techniques, new way of learning, new authority figure. • New classmates - everyone will be seeing some familiar, many new faces. • New grade/learning level - it is intimidating to go to a new grade or even new learning level. It is equally stressful for teachers and administration to adjust to a whole new group of students. • New hopes - everyone will have goals; however, only the most dedicated and driven will be able to achieve them. YOU CAN DO IT!

For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.

Please contact Angelita Guerrero, Copperhead District Executive (713-756-3389 or email angelita.guerrero@scouting. org) or to go www.copperhead.shac.org to find join a Scouting unit near you.

The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities that allow them to: • Try new things.

Young men between the ages of 11-18 are encouraged to visit Boy Scout Troop 61 at 7:00 PM Wednesday nights at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston, Texas, 77084. They will get a hands-on experience of what Scouting has to offer and have the opportunity to visit with the Scouts and their adult leaders to learn more about the things the troop has done during meetings and activities.

• Provide service to others. • Build self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards. Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made, peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made. Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston Area Counsel - Copperhead District which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5 to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to 18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically meet weekly. Many of our units are supported by the local Elementary Schools including: Birkes, Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway, Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps, Walker and Wilson. Other Community groups include: Autumn Creek Baptist

Please help support our drive for a cure or a treatment for Kennedy’s Disease aka Spinal Bulbar Muscular Atrophy. Last year, you allowed us to write a $32,000 check to the KDA, thank you so much. The 5th Annual KDA Golf Scramble will be held Saturday, September 26th at Cypress Lakes Golf Course, 18700 Cypresswood Drive, Cypress, Texas 77429. With your continued help and generous support, maybe we can reach our goal this year of breaching $100K (we are at $90K) No donation is too small - and all are greatly appreciated! Kennedy’s Disease is a rare and currently incurable and non-treatable X-linked recessive genetic progressive neuro-muscular disease. Both the spinal and bulbar neurons are affected causing muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy) throughout the body, which is most noticeable in the extremities (legs/arms), it is especially noticeable in the face and throat and causes speech and swallowing difficulties, major muscle cramps, as well as other symptoms. Please go to www.kdgolfscramble.com and sign up to golf at the prestigious Cypress Lakes GC. If you can’t attend, you can still sponsor a hole for $100 (silver), $300 (Gold) or $750 (platinum). All levels will give you a professionally done sign, with your name and sponsorship. The Platinum & Gold also gives you green fees & free raffle tickets. Hole sponsorships & donations are tax deductible. Shotgun start is 8 AM and registration starts at 6:45 AM, I will be there for the BBQ lunch & auction at 12 PM. All money collected goes to Kennedy’s Disease research for a treatment or cure. I’d sure like to see you there; maybe we can get a few minutes to catch up. The KDA is a 501(c)3 Organization - for more information, please go to www.kennedysdisease.org.

“I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ?

We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through September. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.
