HOLIDAY LIGHTS/DÉCOR Please note that our deed restrictions do not allow holiday lights and/or décor to be displayed before the day after Thanksgiving. Conversely, we ask that it be removed by January 15th of the new year. Please remember that holiday decorations should not be so excessive as to cause a nuisance to neighboring homes.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR The current Board of Directors would like to extend warm holiday greetings to all Canyon Gate residents. Please remember that school will be out of session early on December 21st through January 7th. Use extra caution when driving in and around the community, as there will be many children out and about. School being out of session sometimes can mean an increase in other “unconstructive” happenings. Please remember that we need to be more security conscious than usual at Christmas - be sure to remove any valuables from your vehicles and lock your vehicle doors - as well as those of your home. Most thieves are opportunistic - so don’t give them the opportunity! In the past, some residents in the community have experienced vandalism of their holiday decorations. While teens may think it is amusing to damage inflatable decorations or reposition things, it is usually upsetting to the resident and can be expensive. Please pass the word that this is not in the spirit of the season and if kids are caught vandalizing holiday décor, charges may be filed against them by the owner of the decorations.
2013 ASSESSMENTS DUE JANUARY 31, 2013
A $50 discount is offered for those who pay by January 31, 2013 - this now includes credit card payments, as well as cash or check (a 3% transaction fee will be applied for credit card payments or e-checks). Dues can be paid with your Visa or MasterCard - either in person at the onsite office or via www.canyongateatcincoranch.com - the website. Interest starts accruing March 1st.
Happy Holidays

PAYMENT PLANS ARE AVAILABLE
Snakes
Payment plans are available by calling or emailing the onsite office. You must call or email to request the plan - it will not be set up automatically. The earlier you call to set up a plan, the easier it will be to work the plan into your budget. The board is willing to work with those having financial difficulties, but urges all homeowners to set a plan up early and keep up with the payments.
Homeowners need to be aware that Texas is home to many snakes, including venomous and non-venomous varieties. With the natural areas surrounding the community, Canyon Gate is especially prone to snakes. Please be vigilant when in grassy areas that snakes may hide. If you should see a snake, please do not approach it - they will not normally attack or bite unless provoked. Measures you can take to keep snakes away include the following: • Eliminate debris such as wood or rock piles on the property. • Cut down heavy brush or trim back hedges. • Seal small gaps under doors or decks, etc.
Please note that delinquent accounts get sent to the attorney for collection on April 1st. Payment plans must be set up (and the first payment received) before April 1st to avoid collection.
WILDLIFE Please note that residents in nearby subdivisions have reported sighting of coyotes. All residents should be on the lookout and keep a careful watch on their pets, especially near the banks of bayous. Coyotes usually stay away from humans; however, apparently, due to the extreme drought, these predators are coming closer to human habitation looking for food and water. They are wild animals and when hungry or cornered, may be very aggressive. Small dogs and cats can be very susceptible. If you have pets outside, please try to make arrangements for them to be inside or in a protective enclosure. If you let your pets outside to attend to their business, please don’t leave them long. We do not want another pet to fall victim. Now is also a good time to check the integrity of your fence - even if you don’t live near the edge of the community. Coyotes can’t get into back yards unless boards are broken and missing or the fence is in need of repair. While coyotes are wild animals and therefore unpredictable, they are generally skittish and normally run from humans. Coyotes, along with other predators, do play a vital role in the ecosystem; “thinning out” the coyote population may actually have a detrimental effect by allowing the rodent population (and other pests) to proliferate.

RECREATION CENTER RENTAL The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a two-hour minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Call the onsite office for additional information. Remember to bring your trash home with you after a party - the clubhouse trashcans are being filled to overflowing regularly. Fines will start being assessed if the rec center trashcans are filled up with party debris.
HARRIS COUNTY TOLL TAGS Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement.com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system. The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns. Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation. There is NO PARKING anytime in bicycle lanes. Exceptions to the street parking policy are made only to out of town guests with PRIOR NOTICE given to the office at 281-492-6020. Be sure to give your name and home address, the year, make, model and license plate number of the car, as well as the specific dates that car will be parked in the street.
Deed Restriction Complaint Form Canyon Gate at Cinco Ranch Date ________________________ Address ____________________________________________________ Violation ___________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ Mail or fax this to Canyon Gate Cinco Ranch HOA, 20422 Canyon Gate Blvd, Katy TX 77450 (281-492-3415) or drop off at the onsite office located in the Recreation Center. No names need be given. Onsite office personnel will verify complaint and follow up with compliance procedures. Thank you for your help.
FITNESS CENTER/RECREATION CENTER LOBBY Anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed in the fitness center unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. The recreation center lobby is not to be used as a gathering place for kids to socialize. The Association is asking for all homeowners who use these facilities to help with watching over these areas. If a child is under the age of 18 and is in the fitness center without a parent or guardian or appears to be simply loitering in the lobby, please politely ask them to leave. Thank you.
EZ TAGS FOR FRONT GATE ACCESS The Homeowners’ Association sells EZ tags that will open the resident gate at the Canyon Gate entrance. Residents may purchase these at the onsite office for $35. These EZ tags contain a battery that should last for, approximately, 3 years. The HOA offers a oneyear warranty on these tags. If the battery goes bad and your EZ tag stops working within the first year, the tag will be replaced at no cost. If your EZ tag stops working after the one-year time limit, a new EZ tag will need to be purchased.

National POW/MIA Day – There are still families waiting! Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9182 remembered all Prisoner‘s of War and those who remain Missing In Action on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, in honor of national POW/MIA day. Commander David Brasell led the opening remarks recognizing four local residents: Bart Robinson, Ray Essig, Richard (Marianne) Russell and David Walker. Former Prisoner of War Ray Essig, Marianne Russell, the wife of Richard Russell who is currently still considered Missing In Action and former Prisoner of War David Walker were in attendance. We gathered in freedom for those that have made significant sacrifices for the freedom of our nation. Included in the opening remarks, were prayers for a dearly departed comrade and former POW Bud Fuga, former resident of Katy. Bud Fuga, World War II, was a navigator on a B17 and was shot down in January of 1945. He remained a POW until liberated by the Russian forces at the end of the war. Bud went to his eternal resting place in 2011 and will never be forgotten. Bart Robinson, World War II veteran, Pacific Theater, was captured on the Island of Java in April of 1942 and spent the remainder of the war as a POW of the Japanese. Bart was held as a POW for 3 ½ years, while at the same time his brother was also being held as a POW. Ray Essig, World War II, 42nd Rainbow Division, was an infantryman with the Rainbow Division, also captured in January 1945 and was held as a POW for the balance of the war on the Russian front. At the end, he was released by the Germans. He was released on foot and walked to the American lines, the best he could, in advance of the oncoming Russian Army. Ray Essig has documented his POW experience, “Observations of a Pawn, World War II.” A copy is kept in the library of the Veterans Memorial Museum in Katy,

Texas. Ray Essig returned home, married and raised a family. Ray Essig’s sacrifices are also documented in the World War II combat history publication, “The Story of the Rainbow” which is dedicated to the soldiers of the 42nd Rainbow Division. Richard Russell, Vietnam War, remains missing in action. He was a navigator on a C 130 aircraft that was shot down north of Saigon in An Loc province in 1972. Six were on the plane and only four have been accounted for. Within the last two months, Marianne Russell, the spouse of Richard Russell, received word that the U.S. government has suspended its search efforts at the known crash site for her husband. Marianne joined the VFW members for its annual POW/MIA and emotionally shared how important it is to “let people know there’s still families waiting and when you have someone affected it means more.” We need to bring the soldiers home to bury on American soil. Marianne and their four year old daughter were living in Taiwan when Richard Russell’s plane was shot down. She wanted to stay in Taiwan for news, but the government ordered her to leave the next day. David Walker became one of 63 hostages held at the American Embassy, Tehran, Iran during President Carter’s administration. He was released January 1980 and assigned to the 2nd Battalion Marines in Okinawa. After many assignments in Hawaii and Oklahoma, he was deployed to Desert Storm and retired in 1994. In 2001, David Walker’s status was changed from “hostage status” to POW status by the U.S. government. David Walker experiences are difficult for words. Imagine being blindfolded, put in front of a firing squad, hearing the click of the weapon and constantly having someone standing over you with automatic weapons day after day. Imagine a P38 being held to your head because the Iranians wanted information, for instance, combinations to the safe upstairs at the U.S. Embassy. Soldiers are trained to only provide their name and rank. During his time in Iran, Walker would rarely leave the Embassy and when they did a translator would accompany them. David Walker, the son of a minister, became a deacon and he continues to find salvation the more he studies God’s word.

George Anthony, of Copperfield Ward of the Katy Stake, volunteered along with 220 fellow Mormons, sorting and packaging over 36,000 meals, for the Houston Food Bank.
Second Annual Katy Stake Day of Service Helps Houston Food Bank Katy members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent a recent Saturday helping to feed the hungry at the Houston Food Bank. This is the second year the local church members have set aside a day to do some good in the community. In October 2011, Katy Latter-day Saints joined with other Mormons worldwide in local community service projects, ranging from tying quilts to cleaning a cemetery. Community service tends to feel good, so Mormons in Katy decided to set up a special day each fall for serving in the community together. This year’s project, on Saturday, October 13th, was packing meal boxes at the Houston Food Bank. About 220 Katy

church members drove to the Houston Food Bank facility. In just a few hours they sorted and packed 28,503 meals for adults, plus another 6,240 pounds of rice and beans, which were repackaged to be used for 8,543 meals for youth. It was a good day’s work of feeding the hungry.
First Annual Chris Saiz Charity Golf Tournament Deemed a Huge Success Thanks to Community Support If the success of the First Annual Chris Saiz Point the Way Foundation Charity Golf Tournament, held recently at the River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy, is any indication of the community support of the young foundation, it is off to a great start. With over $50,000 raised, the mission of awarding scholarships to local students with dreams of continuing their education after graduating from high school, but are in need of some financial assistance, can be accomplished. Last May, shortly after the foundation was formed, in honor of Chris Saiz, a much-loved Cinco Ranch High School junior, who passed away as a result of a tragic car accident, three local area Magda & Michael Saiz students received scholarship funds to assist with their college expenses. Saiz was a star basketball player and high achieving student who had dreams of playing basketball in college and achieving his academic goals. In addition to the 150 golfers that attended the event, several Katyarea businesses stepped up to contribute to the tournament. Which Wich provided a delicious box lunch, Mission Burrito was on hand with snacks, Orange Leaf Yogurt donated refreshing frozen yogurt and Stadia Sports Grill served a sit down meal for the golfers to enjoy during the evening program. Golfers and guests were also wined and dined compliments of Ferdie Dupuis of Frank’s International and refreshments sponsored by Global Data Systems and Ooh La La Dessert Boutique.

Temptation galore awaits us each holiday season. How can you stay slim and trim and avoid gaining weight this Thanksgiving and Christmas? Check out these tips: • Understand the temptations. There are more candies, cookies, cakes and creamy foods over the holidays because when a full stomach means a warm body. Reach for fresh fruits and vegetables. • Have a healthy breakfast. Cakes are so tasty with morning coffee and tea. Why not eat whole wheat bread with SmartBalance butter or even a whole wheat waffle with freshly sliced banana? • Up your fiber intake. Eat plenty of whole grains, nuts, oatmeal and green leafy veggies. Your body may be lacking fiber and as a result, you reach for those tempting foods. • Stay hydrated. Many times we’re actually thirsty instead of hungry. Aim for at least 64 ounces of water, not juices, each day. • EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE. Yes, it is cold outside. Yes, you’re unmotivated. NO, don’t stay home. Get out of that house and IN to a gym.
Is Your Car Winter Ready? Winter has a tendency to sneak up on all of us. But where you can simply dig the winter coat out of the closet when the first cold snap rolls through, preparing your car for winter takes a little more foresight. Is your car winter ready? Here are some tips: • Check fluids. Check your coolant to make sure you have enough, as you’ll be left without heat if you don’t. Keep extra coolant in your trunk in case of emergency. Check your brake fluid, oil and transmission fluid are also at the proper levels. • Wash and wax your car at a professional car wash. A thorough wash can remove harmful compounds that may cause damage when mixed with sand and road salt. Experts from the International Carwash Association also recommend a coat of wax for an extra layer of protection from the elements.

• Check your tires. Cold air can cause your tires to lose pressure, so be sure to check again once the temperature drops - the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle can be found on the inside of your driver’s side door. Cracking, presence of wear bars and shallow treads are all indicators that you may need to replace your tires. • Check your wipers. Checking your wiper blades for wear and replacing them if needed can prevent huge visibility headaches once snow and sleet arrive. • Test your battery. The next time you have the car in for an oil change, ask the mechanic to test your battery to make sure it can provide enough starting power once the temperature plummets. • Brakes. While you have your car in, ask for a brake inspection as well, as you’ll need them to be in good working order when driving on slick roads. • Winter emergency kit. In addition to stocking your car with a scraper and brush, it’s a good idea to include a few provisions in case you get stranded in snowy and cold conditions. Pack extra blankets, hats and gloves, snacks like granola bars, drinking water and a first-aid kit. Keeping a collapsible shovel in your trunk is also a good idea in case you get stuck.

Take Precautions Against Crime during Holidays The holidays are busy times and our minds are preoccupied with shopping, baking, planning parties, church activities and so much more. The holidays are also lucrative times for criminals. Here are some tips for our residents: • Never leave packages or attractive items in a vehicle. Lock these in the trunk. Many car burglaries are occurring at various malls and shopping areas on the west and northwest side of Houston. • Try to shop with at least one other person. Stay together and be aware of your surroundings while in parking lots and in stores. • Watch your credit card and your driver’s license. When you pay for your purchases, you will often be asked for your driver’s license with your credit card; you will always have to present identification (usually a driver’s license) when you write a check. Yes, the lines are long and you want to hurry through your transaction, but don’t be

tempted to engage in conversation or watch anything or anyone but the clerk processing your transaction. Both of these items should be within your sight at all times. Before you sign a credit card receipt, ask for your credit card and driver’s license. The holidays are great times for identity thieves and those who would steal your credit cards. Be very aware of what is happening when you pay for your purchase. Put everything away before leaving the purchase counter. • Never leave your purse in a locked or unlocked vehicle. Never set your purse down while shopping. Never put your purse in a shopping cart. Always have your purse in your hand or over your shoulder. To avoid purse snatching, cross the purse so that the strap is over one shoulder and the bag is hanging on the opposite side of your body. Men should carry wallets, check books and credit cards in the front pockets of their pants or in a shirt or interior suit pocket. • When going to your car with your purchases, check the lot for suspicious people. Carefully check around and glance under your vehicle. If a closed van is parked next to the driver’s door, slide in through the passenger side. Check the back seat and back floor before getting into your vehicle. If you are loading small children, lock your purse in the trunk with your packages (keep the keys in your hand or pocket). After the children are secured, take another look around for suspicious activity before you open the trunk to get your purse. When you get into your vehicle, immediately lock the doors, start the engine and drive away. If you feel insecure going into the parking lot, ask for a security guard to accompany you. • When returning home, immediately pull into your garage. If this is not an option, park the car in the driveway and immediately unload all contents and lock the car. Stay alert during this process. • Do not put attractive packages next to windows that offer an easy view from the street. • When leaving your home for the evening, leave some lights and a radio or television turned on. Leave one outside light on. When you return home, check the sides of your house and the area across the street and adjacent to your home from your vehicle before parking. If you are a woman alone, get your house key ready before you exit your car. Lock your car as you are leaving it and immediately go to your door, unlock it, go inside and relock the door. • All homes should be equipped with long dead bolt key locks. Windows should be locked when you are not at home or are not awake. • If you are leaving for the holidays, ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the newspapers and your mail each day or file a stop delivery for these. Complete a vacation watch form at your local sheriff’s department’s storefront. By taking a few precautions, you will insure a safe and happy holiday for you and your family.

San Antonio was the site of the recent Texas Speech Communication Association convention (TSCA) which was attended by a group of six current and retired speech teachers and debate coaches from Katy. In addition to numerous interesting, useful and thought provoking sessions on all aspects of teaching speech and debate, several awards were given. Notably among the awards was Secondary Speech Educator of the Year, which was presented to Gay Hollis, James Taylor High School debate coach. She has had a very successful coaching career at Taylor and other schools and is a teacher looked up to by students and colleagues alike. Other teachers attending were the speech and debate coaches from Mayde Creek High School, Greg McGee; from Morton Ranch High School, Carrie Sanguinetti and from Seven Lakes High School, Charli Lennon. Rounding out the group were retired Katy teachers Norma Coston and Bo Williamson who currently own Custom Awards & Engraving in Katy. Although retired from teaching and coaching, the two remain active in their professional association and Custom Awards & Engraving donates the award plaques each year for the various categories of Educator of the Year. Both Bo and Norma are Life Members of the association and while Coston has been a member for 32 years, Williamson boasts a 48-year membership.

Another winner from our area was George Tennison, speech teacher and debate coach from Olle Middle School in the Alief School District. He was honored as TSCA’s Middle School Speech Educator of the Year. Next year’s convention will be held in Corpus Christi and all speech and debate teachers are encouraged to attend and learn from the sessions provided as well as ideas of colleagues’ they meet. It’s a “once a year” opportunity to experience a “teaching growth spurt” over a short period of time.

Following the FFA motto “…Living to serve,” in 1943, L.D. Robinson, former Katy High School agriculture teacher, initiated the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo to serve and better prepare Katy ISD students. To celebrate the legacy of Robinson and the anniversary of the FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo, the Casey Donahew Band will perform a concert on February 9, 2013 at 7 PM at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. All proceeds from the concert will benefit the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. The L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund was established in 1970 to honor Robinson. Multiple four-year scholarships are awarded in the amount of $500 per semester to graduating seniors in the Katy ISD FFA and Agriculture Science program who meet the requirements of the scholarship. To date, the scholarship fund has awarded almost 90 recipients. “We are so excited to feature the Casey Donahew Band to celebrate 70 years of grand achievements within the Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show & Rodeo,” says Diana Elder, daughter of L.D. Robinson and co-advisor/director of the L.D. Robinson Scholarship Fund. “In the spirit of my father, we would like to continue to give back to the community by increasing scholarship funds for students through this benefit concert.” Casey Donahew released his fourth studio album, Double Wide Dream, in October 2011. In 2012, the Donahew organization received five nominations at the annual Texas Regional Radio Music awards and in June signed up for professional membership with the Academy of Country Music (ACM). For more information about the concert, contact Ben Rolens, general manager of facilities at the Leonard E. Merrell Center, at 281-396-2562. Go to www.merrellcenter.org to get your tickets online.

RUOK Program Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and resubscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s dept. at 281-341-4704.
PLEASE NOTE - Pets on Leashes It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
Fort Bend County “Leash Law” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

The right way to give
Get Into the Christmas Spirit Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus. • Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds. • Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile. • Drop spare coins in the Salvation Army collection buckets. • Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors or rake an elderly neighbor’s yard. • Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself. • Organize a drive at work or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women. • Play Christmas music. • Watch Christmas movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a good one for reviving a flagging Christmas spirit, as is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” • Read “A Christmas Carol” and “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” • Decorate your house for the holidays. • Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over after-Christmas bills can ruin your holiday. ehow.com
• Give with a cheerful heart. • Give within your means. An expensive gift doesn’t mean it’s the best. • Giving comes from your heart, not from the wallet. • Some gifts are priceless... love, time, effort, encouragement, prayer, etc. • Observe the needs and wants of the person you’re giving to. Consider his/her hobbies, lifestyle and what he/she wears. • Be creative, imaginative and crazy. • Shop for gifts early to avoid last-minute frantic rush.
Hanukkah In Judaism, the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Consecration or the Feast of the Maccabees; also transliterated Chanukah. According to tradition, it was instituted by Judas Maccabeus and his brothers in 165 B.C. to celebrate the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem. The festival occurs in December near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas and lasts eight days. Hanukkah later came to be linked also with a miraculous cruse of oil that burned for eight days, leading to the practice of lighting special Hanukkah candles, one the first evening, two the second and so on. The eight-branched candle stand (menorah) used in that ceremony is a frequent symbol for the holiday.
HAPPY Kwanzaa Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26th and lasts through January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest. To prepare for the holiday, families decorate their homes with Kwanzaa symbols. A candle is lit for each day of Kwanzaa. A black candle is lit first, then red and green candles are lit alternately. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. They are Umoja or Unity, Kujichagulia or Self-Determination, Ujima or Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamma or Cooperative Economics, Nia or Purpose, Kuumba or Creativity and Imani or Faith.
