CHRISTMAS WEEK HOURS THE OFFICE WILL HAVE LIMITED HOURS DURING THE CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR HOLIDAYS WHICH WILL BE POSTED IN THE NEXT NEWSLETTER.

ANNUAL HOMEOWNERS’ ASSOCIATION MEETING

The date for the Annual Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, December 5th at 7:00 PM. The meeting will take place at the Cinco Ranch Church of Christ, located adjacent to the subdivision at 6655 S. Mason Road. Please plan to attend. If you did not receive an agenda in the mail, please contact the office for one.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS/DÉCOR Please note that our deed restrictions do not allow holiday lights and/or décor to be displayed before the day after Thanksgiving. Conversely, we ask that it be removed by January 15th of the new year. Please remember that holiday decorations should not be so excessive as to cause a nuisance to neighboring homes.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY

Mark your calendars! The annual Canyon Gate Christmas party is scheduled for Saturday, December 21st, from 10 AM - 12 noon, at the Recreation Center. Come join us for lots of fun, food and visits with Santa. Be sure to bring your camera!

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR The current Board of Directors would like to extend warm holiday greetings to all Canyon Gate residents. Please remember that school will be out of session early on December 20th through January 6th. Use extra caution when driving in and around the community, as there will be many children out and about. School being out of session sometimes can mean an increase in other “unconstructive” happenings. Please remember that we need to be more security conscious than usual at

Christmas - be sure to remove any valuables from your vehicles and lock your vehicle doors, as well as those of your home. Most thieves are opportunistic, so don’t give them the opportunity! In the past, some residents in the community have experienced vandalism of their holiday decorations. While teens may think it is amusing to damage inflatable decorations or reposition things, it is usually upsetting to the resident and can be expensive. Please pass the word that this is not in the spirit of the season and if kids are caught vandalizing holiday décor, charges may be filed against them by the owner of the decorations. WILDLIFE THE GRAY FOX By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center The most interesting fact about the gray fox is that it is capable of climbing trees. The fox uses its front legs to grasp the tree and its hind legs to push upward. Since they are nocturnal, most people never see one. They can be found in wooded areas and they make their homes in abandoned burrows, caves and hollow trees. They are quite small with weights ranging from 7 to 13 pounds, but they’re fast reaching speeds of 26-29 miles per hour for short distances. The fur is gray and tipped with black. Its sides and neck are reddish and its undersides are white. They have a furry tail tipped in black. The female gray fox will have one litter per year. She will give birth to 3 to 7 kits between February and May. The kits are dark brown when born, blind and only weigh about 3.5 ounces. They reach their adult weight at five to six months at which time mama can be seen chasing them off to find their own territories. This is one species where the male helps care for the young. Mice, rats and rabbits make up the majority of its diet, but it will consume almost anything that is edible.

Newsletters

Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement.com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system. The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate. REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problemfree residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns. Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation. There is NO PARKING anytime in bicycle lanes. Exceptions to the street parking policy are made only to out of town guests with PRIOR NOTICE given to the office at 281-492-6020. Be sure to give your name and home address, the year, make, model and license plate number of the car, as well as the specific dates that car will be parked in the street.

FITNESS CENTER/RECREATION CENTER LOBBY Anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed in the fitness center unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. The recreation center lobby is not to be used as a gathering place for kids to socialize. The Association is asking for all homeowners who use these facilities to help with watching over these areas. If a child is under the age of 18 and is in the fitness center without a parent or guardian or appears to be simply loitering in the lobby, please politely ask them to leave. Thank you. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Fines will start being assessed if the rec center trashcans are filled up with party debris.

ANIMALS / PETS CONTROL Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space….. remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined. Animal control can be reached by calling 281342-1512 and will pick up strays and/or unconfined pets.

Merry Christmas! YOUR HEALTH NOW! FITNESS FRENZY WHEN IT’S FREEZING! Oh joy! It is going to get cooler outside and this means we’re not going to want to get out and about as much. Instead we will be keeping warm by staying indoors, surrounded by all the holiday goodnesses: TV, family and FOOD. But you CAN be fit even when it’s freezing! Here’s how to beat the winter fitness blues: • Change your mind - a new season is about a new YOU vs. new weather. Revisit your goals and get ‘em! • Go out and play - dress in layers, bring a ball or Frisbee and play! • Play a winter sport - sure it’s not easy to find one in Houston, but there are some special fitness classes that pop up especially during the winter season to keep us fit and fabulous. • Get creative at home - do a fitness video (P90x, Insanity, Zumba, Bollywood dance) and see the changes! Try something new - a new activity for about a month will add pizazz to your routine and new friends too! • Set big AND little goals - if the colder months leave you unmotivated, set an achievable goal. For example, train for a 5K and your little goals include increasing your run time by 3 minutes each week. • Get excited, get ENERGIZED!

HOLIDAY SHOPPING SAFETY! We’re going to be out and about and this means our focus and attention are compromised. Be sure to put safety as your #1 wish item on your holiday shopping list. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind: • Do not buy more than you can carry. • Save all receipts. • Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. • Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. • Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket. • Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in. • Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk or if possible, take them directly home. • If you are shopping with children, make a plan in case you are separated from each other. • Select a central meeting place. • Teach kiddos to know they can ask mall personnel or store security employees if they need help. • Before surfing the Internet, secure your personal computers by updating your security software. • Keep your personal information private and your password secure. Do not respond to requests to “verify” your password or credit card information unless you initiated the contact. • Beware of “bargains” from companies with whom you are unfamiliar. • Use secure websites for purchases. Look for the icon of a locked padlock at the bottom of the screen or “https” in the URL address. • Shop with companies you know and trust. Canyon Gate @ CR

DECEMBER 2013 OBSERVANCES & FUN FACTS December 2013 is observed as: • Universal Human Rights Month • Safe Toys and Gifts Month Birthstone: Turquoise and Blue Topaz Fruit & Veggies for December: Comice Pears, Kumquats, Sapote, Pepino melon, Cherimoya, Ugli fruits, Parsnip, Beets, Turnips, Rutabaga, Celery Root / Celeriac, Horseradish December Flower: Narcissus & Holly Astrological Signs: Sagittarius and Capricorn

TOP WINTER DESTINATIONS! Looking to travel this Holiday season? Check out these top winter destinations: Hawaii Greece Iceland New Orleans, LA St. Croix

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER

• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food. December 2013

In Judaism, the Festival of Lights, the Feast of Consecration or the Feast of the Maccabees; also transliterated Chanukah. According to tradition, it was instituted by Judas Maccabeus and his brothers in 165 B.C. to celebrate the dedication of the new altar in the Temple at Jerusalem. The festival occurs in December near the time of the winter solstice, as does Christmas and lasts eight days. Hanukkah later came to be linked also with a miraculous cruse of oil that burned for eight days, leading to the practice of lighting special Hanukkah candles, one the first evening, two the second and so on. The eight-branched candle stand (menorah) used in that ceremony is a frequent symbol for the holiday.

Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday created in 1966. It begins on December 26th and lasts through January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the language of Swahili and means first fruits of the harvest. To prepare for the holiday, families decorate their homes with Kwanzaa symbols. A candle is lit for each day of Kwanzaa. A black candle is lit first, then red and green candles are lit alternately. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, one for each day. They are Umoja or Unity, Kujichagulia or Self-Determination, Ujima or Collective Work and Responsibility, Ujamma or Cooperative Economics, Nia or Purpose, Kuumba or Creativity and Imani or Faith.

GET INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace, love and goodwill to all. But with all the stress and commotion of the season, many of us end up feeling more like Mr. Scrooge than Santa Claus. • Shop early. Nothing takes away the Christmas spirit like fighting for parking and struggling through crowds. • Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile. • Drop spare coins in the Salvation Army collection buckets. • Do something nice for someone. Offer to baby-sit so a friend can do her Christmas shopping, take cookies to your neighbors or rake an elderly neighbor’s yard. • Volunteer your time to a worthy holiday cause. Even if you are busy, you can spare an hour or two to help people less fortunate than yourself. • Organize a drive at work or in your neighborhood. Collect food and personal items and donate them to a local shelter for the homeless or for battered women. • Play Christmas music. • Watch Christmas movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a good one for reviving a flagging Christmas spirit, as is “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” • Read “A Christmas Carol” and “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” • Decorate your house for the holidays. • Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over afterChristmas bills can ruin your holiday. ehow.com

HOW TO USE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SAFELY • Keep Christmas lights stored in a covered box, wrapped neatly around a plastic light organizer or just loosely wrapped, untangled. • Check each and every light for broken or non-functioning bulbs. Discard lights that don’t work and replace with new bulbs. Canyon Gate @ CR

281-617-2231 • Make sure cords and wiring are intact. Avoid frayed cords - discard immediately if frayed. • Know that there are separate lights for indoor and outdoor use. Use indoor lights inside your home and UL-approved outdoor lights outside. • Turn off all Christmas lights when you go to bed. • Use mini, low-voltage lights on a tree. The large lights generate too much heat and can dry out your tree faster, making it a fire hazard.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST CRIME DURING HOLIDAYS The holidays are busy times and our minds are preoccupied with shopping, baking, planning parties, church activities and so much more. The holidays are also lucrative times for criminals. Here are some tips for our residents: • Never leave packages or attractive items in a vehicle. Lock these in the trunk. Many car burglaries are occurring at various malls and shopping areas on the west and northwest side of Houston. • Try to shop with at least one other person. Stay together and be aware of your surroundings while in parking lots and in stores. • Watch your credit card and your driver’s license. When you pay for your purchases, you will often be asked for your driver’s license with your credit card; you will always have to present identification (usually a driver’s license) when you write a check. Yes, the lines are long and you want to hurry through your transaction, but don’t be tempted to engage December 2013

in conversation or watch anything or anyone but the clerk processing your transaction. Both of these items should be within your sight at all times. Before you sign a credit card receipt, ask for your credit card and driver’s license. The holidays are great times for identity thieves and those who would steal your credit cards. Be very aware of what is happening when you pay for your purchase. Put everything away before leaving the purchase counter. • Never leave your purse in a locked or unlocked vehicle. Never set your purse down while shopping. Never put your purse in a shopping cart. Always have your purse in your hand or over your shoulder. To avoid purse snatching, cross the purse so that the strap is over one shoulder and the bag is hanging on the opposite side of your body. Men should carry wallets, check books and credit cards in the front pockets of their pants or in a shirt or interior suit pocket. • When going to your car with your purchases, check the lot for suspicious people. Carefully check around and glance under your vehicle. If a closed van is parked next to the driver’s door, slide in through the passenger side. Check the back seat and back floor before getting into your vehicle. If you are loading small children, lock your purse in the trunk with your packages (keep the keys in your hand or pocket). After the children are secured, take another look around for suspicious activity before you open the trunk to get your purse. When you get into your vehicle, immediately lock the doors, start the engine and drive away. If you feel insecure going into the parking lot, ask for a security guard to accompany you. • When returning home, immediately pull into your garage. If this is not an option, park the car in the driveway and immediately unload all contents and lock the car. Stay alert during this process. • Do not put attractive packages next to windows that offer an easy view from the street. • When leaving your home for the evening, leave some lights and a radio or television turned on. Leave one outside light

on. When you return home, check the sides of your house and the area across the street and adjacent to your home from your vehicle before parking. If you are a woman alone, get your house key ready before you exit your car. Lock your car as you are leaving it and immediately go to your door, unlock it, go inside and relock the door. • All homes should be equipped with long dead bolt key locks. Windows should be locked when you are not at home or are not awake. • If you are leaving for the holidays, ask a friend or neighbor to pick up the newspapers and your mail each day or file a stop delivery for these. Complete a vacation watch form at your local sheriff’s department’s storefront. By taking a few precautions, you will insure a safe and happy holiday for you and your family.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS) Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping.

ard Fields, P.E. as the speaker for our January monthly program. In January 2013, three counties came together to form the Highway 36A Coalition, an advocacy group dedicated to developing free-flowing transportation facilities in southern Brazoria, western Fort Bend and Waller Counties. The general route for this corridor begins at Port Freeport and ends at SH 6 north of Hempstead, following existing SH 36 south of Rosenberg. The route is undefined across western Fort Bend County and follows the “Prairie Parkway” according to the Waller County thoroughfare plan north of IH 10, which crosses the Katy Prairie Conservancy. If you are not aware of the efforts of the Highway 36A Coalition currently we hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to learn what their proposal entails, what their concerns are. This program will take place on Thursday, January 9th, at 7 PM. The meeting will be preceded by a social time and snacks at 6:30 PM and will be held at the Bud O’Shieles Community Center located at 1330 Band Road, Rosenberg, 77471. of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

RUOK PROGRAM

RECYCLE AT THE FT. BEND COUNTY RECYCLING CENTER!

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up

The Ft. Bend County Recycling center is located nearby in Rosenberg (just 10 miles away) and accepts glass/bottles and Styrofoam that Waste Management doesn’t pick up. Visit the Ft. Bend Co. government website for information: www.co.fort-bend.tx.us.

It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

THE RIGHT WAY TO GIVE • Give with a cheerful heart. • Give within your means. An expensive gift doesn’t mean it’s the best. • Giving comes from your heart, not from the wallet. • Some gifts are priceless... love, time, effort, encouragement, prayer, etc. • Observe the needs and wants of the person you’re giving to. Consider his/her hobbies, lifestyle and what he/she wears. • Be creative, imaginative and crazy. • Shop for gifts early to avoid last-minute frantic rush.

GREEN TIPS

1. The holidays are the best time to recycle. DON’T throw away a pile of stuff when it can find a use elsewhere and keep our landfills a little emptier (and save you tax money). • Excess paper and cardboard gift wrapping can be recycled at the local schools in the yellow and green bins. • Plastic packaging can be recycled using your curbside bins. • Clothing, shoes and household items can always be recycled through charitable organizations like individual church thrift shops, Salvation Army, Purple Heart, etc. Aside from helping your neighbor during the holiday period, you can also get a tax write-off for such contributions. Or you can sell gently used items at local resale shops (again, money in your pocket). • Electronics can be recycled at the local Goodwill office on Hwy. 6, just south of West Little York. A tax write-off for your donation just before the end of the year is a bonus! • Old cell phones can be donated to local women’s shelters, who wipe them and donate them to women in danger of abuse. • Old eyeglasses can be donated Lion’s International (www. lionsclubs.org/EN/our-work/sight-programs/eyeglass-recycling). Check with your optometrist, most optometrist offices collect glasses for donation to this program. Canyon Gate @ CR

2. Twenty (20) things to recycle. Go to www.mnn.com/lifestyle/ recycling/stories/20-things-you-didnt-know-you-could-recycle for the complete article. Copied below are the first 7 things to recycle. We’ll continue this list in the next two newsletters. 1) Athletic shoes - Tired, broken-down, “fragrant” running shoes are most generally directed to the trash, but given our penchant for kicks, that’s a lot of sneakers stinking up the landfill. A better future for your athletic shoes is to introduce them to one of Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe recycling bins (www.mnn. com/lifestyle/responsible-living/blogs/recycle-your-athleticshoes-at-nike). Nike in turn will incorporate them into the raw material called Nike Grind, which is used in everything from running tracks to shoe soles to zippers. 2) Bicycles - Americans send more than 15 million bicycles out to pasture every year. But rather than throwing them in the dump, you can give your old two-wheelers a second life by donating them to Bikes of the World (www.bikesfortheworld. org), which collects, refurbishes and donates bikes to lowerincome people and select institutions in developing countries. 3) Bike tools and gear - With a similar mission to Bikes of the World, Bikes Not Bombs (https://bikesnotbombs.org) takes bicycle bits, pieces and gear in addition to the bikes themselves. They accept parts, tools, broken components such as cracked frames, worn tires, tubes with holes, helmets, bags, lights, pumps, locks, cycle clothing, etc. They restore bikes and gear and deliver them overseas to economic development projects in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Bikes that don’t get shipped often land in the group’s youth programs where teens learn bicycle safety and mechanic skills while earning bikes to keep for themselves. 4) Bras - There comes a time in every bra’s life when it just has to move on and bras aren’t generally the kind of clothing we women toss in the “to donate” pile. But the Bosom Buddy Program (www.mnn.com/lifestyle/natural-beauty-fashion/ blogs/recycle-your-bra), started by a textile recycling company in Arizona, wants your weary bras. After sprucing them up, they donate the revamped brassieres to women’s shelters or other programs that help women gain self-sufficiency. 5) Brita water filters - Ditching plastic water bottles for filtered water is a resourceful move, even if you are left with spent water filters. But if you use Brita products, you’re in luck (www. mnn.com/lifestyle/recycling/stories/save-brita-filters-forrecycling). They have teamed up with the company Preserve and between the two, they are recycling Brita plastic pitcher filter casings into Preserve’s eco-friendly, 100-percent recycled products such as toothbrushes, cups and cutting boards. Also cool: the activated carbon within the filters is regenerated for alternative use or converted into energy. 6) Carpeting - When it comes time to reveal the lovely hardwood floor buried underneath that mod shag carpeting, find a carpet-reclamation facility (http://carpetrecovery.org) to take it for recycling. You can also check with individual carpet makers, many of which have recycling programs. 7) Compact fluorescent light bulbs - The mercury content makes CFLs a trickier disposal problem than basic bulbs, leaving many people confused about what to do with them once the light has been extinguished. But now both Ikea and Home Depot provide CFL recycling programs and other lighting stores are also beginning to accept these bulbs as well. If neither of these chain stores are nearby, see 5 ways to dispose of old CFLs for other ideas (www.mnn.com/yourhome/at-home/stories/5-ways-to-dispose-of-old-cfls). Resolve to be kinder to the earth and reduce your carbon footprint in 2014.
