KATY, TX. PERMIT #137
2013 ASSESSMENTS DUE JANUARY 31, 2013 A $50 discount ($1,010) is offered for those who pay by January 31, 2013 - this now includes credit card payments, as well as cash or check (a 3% transaction fee will be applied for credit card payments or e-checks). Dues can be paid with your Visa or MasterCard - either in person at the onsite office or via www.canyongateatcincoranch.com - the website. Interest starts accruing March 1st.
PAYMENT PLANS ARE AVAILABLE Payment plans are available by calling or emailing the onsite office. You must call or email to request the plan - it will not be set up automatically. The earlier you call to set up a plan, the easier it will be to work the plan into your budget. The board is willing to work with those having financial difficulties, but urges all homeowners to set a plan up early and keep up with the payments. Please note that delinquent accounts get sent to the attorney for collection on April 1st. Payment plans must be set up (and the first payment received) before April 1st to avoid collection.
DEED RESTRICTIONS The board has been noticing more and more garden decorations (i.e. figurines, signs, statues, etc.). While our restrictions don’t regulate the number of figures, we are receiving complaints about some yards with large numbers of pieces. We ask all residents to cast a critical eye at their front yards and limit the number of ornaments displayed. We have also received complaints about vehicles with loud stereos - if you have a teen driver, please remind them (and their friends) to keep the music down to a reasonable level while in the community.

We still see many people who think that the roads in the community are their private autobahn - this is NOT the case. Please observe posted speed limits and stop signs when driving in the community. If you should witness a vehicle speeding (or playing extremely loud music), please try to get the license plate information to the office. We can run the plates and send a reminder letter to the registered owner of the vehicle.

WILDLIFE Please note that residents in nearby subdivisions have reported sighting of coyotes. All residents should be on the lookout and keep a careful watch on their pets, especially near the banks of bayous. Coyotes usually stay away from humans; however, apparently, due to the extreme drought, these predators are coming closer to human habitation looking for food and water. They are wild animals and when hungry or cornered, may be very aggressive. Small dogs and cats can be very susceptible. If you have pets outside, please try to make arrangements for them to be inside or in a protective enclosure. If you let your pets outside to attend to their business, please don’t leave them long. We do not want another pet to fall victim. Now is also a good time to check the integrity of your fence - even if you don’t live near the edge of the community. Coyotes can’t get into back yards unless boards are broken and missing or the fence is in need of repair. While coyotes are wild animals and therefore unpredictable, they are generally skittish and normally run from humans. Coyotes, along with other predators, do play a vital role in the ecosystem; “thinning out” the coyote population may actually have a detrimental effect by allowing the rodent population (and other pests) to proliferate.
Snakes Homeowners need to be aware that Texas is home to many snakes, including venomous and non-venomous varieties. With the natural areas surrounding the community, Canyon Gate is especially prone to snakes. Please be vigilant when in grassy areas that snakes may hide. If you should see a snake, please do not approach it - they will not normally attack or bite unless provoked. Measures you can take to keep snakes away include the following: • Eliminate debris such as wood or rock piles on the property. • Cut down heavy brush or trim back hedges. • Seal small gaps under doors or decks, etc.

The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a two-hour minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Call the onsite office for additional information. Remember to bring your trash home with you after a party - the clubhouse trashcans are being filled to overflowing regularly. Fines will start being assessed if the rec center trashcans are filled up with party debris.

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns. Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation.

They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined. Start a Realistic Exercise Program It’s a New Year and you’re making a promise to yourself to get in better shape and never be breathless again. This time YOU WILL DO THIS! How can you start a realistic exercise regime this time around and not get burned out? Check out these 3 simple steps: 1) Get a full check-up from your physician first. You want to exclude any underlying health problems that could be dangerous when you’re exercising. You want to be cleared to exercise by your doctor before you begin. 2) Start slowly, maybe 20 minutes a day for three days a week, increasing your intervals in five-minute increments to hit exercising five to six times a week for 60 minutes a day, as the federal government suggests. Remember, when you exercise, your heart rate needs to be elevated. You need to be sweating and your heart needs to be pounding. It may take a little time to build up to that. 3) Recognize that every little bit of exercise helps. Some exercise is better than no exercise. If you’re busy or tired or not feeling well and you’re tempted to skip exercising, remember that every bit does a lot of good.
EATING HEALTHIER & TASTIER How can eating healthy be tasty? Oh yes it can! Exercise contributes just 40% towards weight loss. The remaining 60% is your INPUT! Eat healthier. It’s so easy. • Begin with cleaning out your kitchen pantry and fridge. Toss all full fat items, whole milk dairy products, foods with partially hydrogenated oils or shortening, chips and other fatty snacks. • Refill your pantry and fridge with goodness. Fill your fridge with fresh fruits and veggies that YOU will cut and enjoy. Your pantry should be stocked with oatmeal (not instant), whole wheat cream of wheat, whole grain cereals, unsalted/natural nuts and if you must

have chips and cookies, opt for the low fat/low salt goodies with low saturated fat and zero trans fat. Be sure to purchase eggs with omega3’s, low fat or skim milk, cholesterol reducing butter spreads and tons of frozen veggies! • TOSS THE SALT. Enough said. • Use lots of spices. South Asian, Thai and Italian seasons are a super hit with everyday cooking. • Eat 6 times a day. That’s right, eat 6 meals a day. Begin at 7 AM, 10 AM, then 12 PM, 3 PM, 6 PM and at 9 PM. Your breakfast, lunch and dinners at 7, 12 and 6 will be a little heavier than the in between meals, but not by much. Your snack meals should include a fruit, protein and small carbohydrate. EAT UP!
Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. with Service January 21, 2013 will mark the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. This milestone is a perfect opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community. Why Serve on MLK Day of Service? Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live - creating the Beloved Community. The MLK Day of Service is a way to transform Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community action that helps solve social problems. That service may meet a tangible need or it may meet a need of the spirit. On this day, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through service projects that strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers and create solutions.
Do Something BIG - VOLUNTEER! Americans spend so much time working and doing many other things, filling up their schedules. We’ve heard the saying “stop and smell the coffee or roses.” But why not make that coffee and clip the roses for someone else? YES - Volunteer! Here’s how to get started: • Explore your interests. Chances are, there is a non-profit groups that seeks your skills and talents. • Commit to volunteering at least 4 hours a month. Only 4 hours a month - that’s it. It’s almost a guarantee that you will volunteer more than 4 hours because your passion will grow! • Start your own charity. Have a passion for teddy bears? Coloring books? Helping Senior Citizens? You can do so much: hold a teddy bear drive and donate to the local Star of Hope chapter. Collect
5
coloring books and donate them to a local children’s residential facility. If you have a strong desire to help Senior Citizens, gather magazines and donate them to their living quarters. • Read to children at the local library. There are many story times and pajama night reading times at the local library. Find out how you can put your dynamic, animated personality to use! • Love pets? Volunteer at your local Human Society, ASCPA or Citizens for Animal Protection! Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves (our sweet homeless animals)!

CASI Chili Cook-off at Katy Elks Lodge The aroma of chili was in the air at the Katy Elks Lodge over the weekend of November 17-18, 2012. Not one, but two CASI chili cook-offs were held. Saturday brought a crowd of 45 cookers vying for points leading to eligibility at the 2013 International Chili Cookoff at Terlingua, Texas, while Sunday had 28 entrants. In addition to the chili competition, Saturday included both Salsa and Beans as “jackpot” events. On both days Showmanship was judged and points earned. The Salsa winner and Beans winner were one and the same: Nigel Delgado from Houston Elks Lodge #151. The Saturday chili winners were: 1st - Earl Gorham of Montgomery; 2nd - Howard Dahl of Shoreacres; 3rd - Ralph Hoy of Pasadena; 4th - Sherrie Davis of South Houston; 5th - Karin Barnes of Houston; 6th - Doris Greenlee of Houston; 7th - Ken Armand of Houston; 8th - Gilbert Butschek of Houston; 9th - Mick Joplin of Morgan and 10th - Melissa Pate of Houston; And in Showmanship: 1st - Charlie Throop; 2nd - Mick Joplin and 3rd - Kathryn Cavender. DON’T FORGET YOUR FEATHERED FRIENDS THIS WINTER During the winter months, birds often have a difficult time finding the food they need to survive. A bird feeder outside your window not only helps to keep your feathered friends warm and full during the winter months, but it can also provide you with hours of pleasure. You may even gain some permanent residents when springtime comes and they are looking for a place to build their nests! Here are some tips for keeping the birds fat and happy this winter. What should I feed the birds? Bird food normally means seeds. You can buy birdseed at any number of places. Even though it might be cheaper to buy large quantities, remember that birdseed may encourage insects. If you do buy large quantities, store in dry, covered containers. If you want to have a variety of birds, you need a variety of seeds. You can buy it pre-mixed or mix your own. Always include sunflower seeds as nearly all birds like those. Some birds also like suet, which gives birds the extra heat and energy they need to fly well. What type of feeder should I use? Different species of birds prefer different types of feeders. Among the basic types of feeders available there are:
Canyon Gate @ CR
January 2013
Platform Feeders - these have a flat surface with a tray around the edge where the seed is scattered. If you live in a very windy area, these may not be practical as the seed can be blown away. Hopper Feeders - these are the type that self-replenish the seed as it is used. Perching birds such as finches, chickadees and cardinals are fond of this type of feeder. However, so are squirrels! Tube Feeders - these are the hard, tubular plastic feeders that are designed for hanging from trees or porches. They attract smaller perching birds like finches. The small feeding port in tube feeders discourages larger birds and squirrels. Suet Feeders - suet feeders are good for areas where there are lots of insects, because insect-eating birds love suet but don’t normally care for seed feeders. These insect-eating birds will help control the insect population in your yard. Nectar Feeders - these are used in warmer climates and help attract hummingbirds and orioles. The solution used is one part sugar to four parts of water. If you want lots of hummingbirds, place several feeders around the yard. Source: www.allaboutthehome.com
WINTER TIPS FOR YOUR PLANTS Winter Tips • Water houseplants less since they grow more slowly on short, dark days. Too much water will kill them. • Don’t fertilize them unless they are growing under artificial lights. • Lining shelves or windowsills with aluminum foil reflects light and provides extra light for houseplants. Be sure there are no leaks that allow water to collect under the foil and damage sills.

Caring for houseplants while you’re away on vacation • A week or so before your trip, turn the heat register off in a room with indirect light. • Monitor room temperature with a thermometer placed on the floor. • Check frequently to determine fluctuations of temperature. Ideally temperature should be between low-to-mid 50’s during the day, falling into the upper 40’s at night. At this range, your plants will survive without extra care for a few weeks. • Water all plants the day before you leave, whether they need it or not. Let pots drain fully. • Cover the floor of the room with newspapers and plastic and place all your plants together in the room. • Open curtains, drapes or blinds to allow optimum light to enter the room. Make sure plants aren’t in drafts. • You can also use self-watering wicks available in most plant stores for watering. • If you don’t have a room for the plants, try leaving them in the bathtub. After soaking them good, cover them with a sheet of plastic and they’ll survive for 2 weeks or longer. Shut off the heater vent in the bathroom so the room will remain cool and the heat won’t dry the plants out. Keeping Your Winter Plants Safe Smaller, younger plants have a harder time surviving the cold than larger plants. Be sure and protect these during frigid weather. If you have plants that have been attacked by insects or diseases, pay special attention to them during the winter. Source: www.allaboutthehome.com

Estate l a e R r u o Y or Life! f e c r u o s e R FACTS ON CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING
The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that approximately 200 people per year are killed by accidental CO poisoning, with an additional 5,000 people injured - more accidental poisonings than any other chemical substance. During winter, when our houses are closed up to keep warm and appliances such as heaters and furnaces are operating, the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning increases dramatically. Known as the “Silent Killer,” carbon monoxide is a tasteless, odorless, colorless toxic gas that is a by-product of combustion and is virtually impossible to detect. Any fuel-burning appliance or device can produce dangerous levels of this gas and must be maintained properly to avoid the build-up of this poison in your home. What can cause carbon monoxide poisoning in the home? Fuel-fired furnaces (check for cracked furnace exchange); Gas water heaters (check for corroded or disconnected water heater flue); Fireplaces and wood stoves (check for dirty or clogged chimneys); Gas stoves (check for proper installation); Gas dryers (use outside ventilation); Any gas or kerosene appliance such as portable heaters; Charcoal grills (don’t operate inside or in an enclosed area such as garage); Gas engines such as lawnmowers, blowers and other yard equipment; Automobile exhaust (especially dangerous in an attached garage); Cigarette smoke; Anywhere combustion takes place. What are the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning? The symptoms of CO poisoning are commonly mistaken for other illnesses such as the flu or a cold. Concentration levels of CO in your bloodstream can cause: 10% concentration - no apparent symptoms (heavy smokers can have as much as 9% COHb); 15% concentration - mild headache, 25% concentration - nausea, serious headache (quick recovery after treatment with oxygen or fresh air); 30% concentration - intensified headaches, nausea, dizziness, increased pulse and respiration (potential for long-term effects, especially in infants, children, the elderly, victims of heart disease and pregnant women); 45% concentration - unconsciousness, possible collapse, convulsions, coma and eventually death; 50%+ concentration – death. CAUTION: Carbon monoxide especially

281-391-SOLD (7653) www.lizcarter.com Our Family Serving Your Family Since 1976 affects unborn babies, infants, people with anemia or a history of heart or respiratory disease and pregnant women. How can I prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in my home? • Make sure your fuel-burning appliances (oil and gas furnaces, gas water heaters, gas ranges and ovens, gas dryers, gas or kerosene space heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves) are installed and working according to manufacturers’ instructions and local building codes. • Have all of your fuel-burning appliances inspected and cleaned by a professional at the beginning of every heating season. • Make certain that flues and chimneys are connected, unclogged and in good working condition. • Have only a qualified technician install or convert fuel-burning equipment from one type to another. • Never use ovens and gas ranges to heat your home. • Never use a charcoal grill inside a home, cabin, recreational vehicle or camper - even in a fireplace. • Never leave your car idling or a mower or blower running in a closed garage. Fumes can build up very quickly in the garage and living area of your home. • Make sure your furnace has an adequate intake of outside air. • Choose appliances that vent fumes to the outside whenever possible. If you cannot avoid using an unvented gas or kerosene space heater, follow the cautions that come with the device carefully. • Use the proper fuel and keep doors to the rest of the house open when using gas or kerosene space heaters. Crack a window to ensure enough air for ventilation and proper burning of fuel. Never sleep in an enclosed space with gas or kerosene space heaters. • Install carbon monoxide detectors with an audible alarm in your home and garage. DON’T IGNORE SYMPTOMS, particularly if more than one person is feeling them. You could lose consciousness and die if you do nothing. Play it safe. If you DO experience symptoms that you think could be from CO poisoning: Get fresh air immediately. Open doors and windows, turn off fuel-burning appliances and leave the house. Go to an emergency room and tell the physician you suspect CO poisoning. Source: www.pp.okstate.edu/ehs/links/co.htm

KATY ISD’s SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL ADVANCES TO STATE MARCHING CONTEST IN SAN ANTONIO! The Seven Lakes High School Band represented Katy ISD at the UIL Texas State Marching Contest in San Antonio, Texas, on Tuesday, November 6th. They competed against other marching bands from across the state for top honors. This is quite an achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the directors, band and color guard members. After earning a Division 1 rating in the Region 23 UIL Marching Contest earlier this month, Katy ISD’s Seven Lakes High School advanced to the Area Marching Contest held on Saturday, October 27th. A total of 22 bands competed in the Area Contest, with 10 advancing to Finals and only 4 advancing to compete at the State Marching Contest. The Seven Lakes High School band was among the top 4 bands and advanced to State! Only 4 times since the 1980’s has a school from Katy advanced to the State Marching Contest and only 2 times in 5A classification. The last time a school advanced to the State Marching level was Seven Lakes High School in 2007, as a 4A school. The State Marching Contest took place at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Tuesday, November 6th. The 5A competition comprised of 38 bands from across the State. These are considered the “best of the best” and competition is steep. 5A Bands began their preliminary performances at 7:30 AM on Tuesday, with the final band performing at 6:15 PM. The Seven Lakes High School Spartan Band performed their “In the Loop” Competition Show at 10:30 AM. The Spartan Band competed with both band and color guard members and comprises approximately 320 members. Directors include: Damon Archer - Directors of Bands; David Reynolds - Associate Director of Bands; Jonathan Yoo - Assistant Director of

Bands; and Angie Fritsch - Guard Director. Drum Majors include: Grace Chung - Head Drum Major; Alaina Roth; Molly Todd and Mark Milhelin. Rachel Luergering is the band’s Student Teacher. Excitement and support surrounded the Seven Lakes Spartan Band! The school even arranged a “Fan Bus” for students to travel to San Antonio to support the band at their performance! Parents, family, friends, as well as former students could be seen in the Alamodome with “In the Loop” Competition Show t-shirts or orange band shirts. Seven Lakes Principal Ted Vierling, Assistant Principal James Morris, as well as Superintendent Alton Frailey, Assitant Superintendent Joe Kelley, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Christine Caskey and Bob Bryant Executive Director of Fine Arts were also in attendance. The Seven Lakes fan base was said to be the loudest in the stadium, cheering for the band as they entered the field for their performance. The UIL State Marching competition for 5A takes place every other year (even years). The competition is evaluated by 5 different judges and all bands are given a composite score. Based on these results, the top 10 out of 38 bands advance to Finals, which take place later in the evening. Unfortunately, the Spartan Band did not advance to Finals, however just making it to this level is quite an accomplishment and something to be very proud of. Marcus High School from Flower Mound placed first in this year’s Contest. They also placed first in 2010. 8 out of the top 10 bands in this year’s Finals were also among the top 10 bands in the 2010 State Marching Contest Finals. The Seven Lakes Spartan Band and other bands within the Katy Independent School District are fortunate to have the support of a district that understands the value and importance of Fine Arts to their student’s education and overall success in school. The Seven Lakes High School Spartan Band would like to thank Katy ISD for their support at this recent trip to compete at the UIL Texas State Marching Contest. The band is also very fortunate to have supportive corporate sponsors which include Conoco-Philips, Wal-Mart Transportation, Baytown Shopping Center, M&H Enterprises, Soteica Visual Mesa, Drs. Hamon & Debuyl, DDS, Infinity Roofing, Kingsland Dental Group, Randall’s, Trendmaker Homes, Trailer World of Katy, KTK, Inc. and Forrest Orthodontics. Visit www.slhsband.org for more information.

Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 345 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 15th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promised to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during one week in November. This year, ten Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Morton Ranch, Hutsell, Nottingham, Kilpatrick, King, Pattison, Mayde Creek, Griffin, Bear Creek and McRoberts Elementary. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a three-year period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate. “Promise to Read has become a volunteer event that many in our community really look forward to. Most of our visiting readers return year after year,” says Sandi Meier, Katy ISD Promise to Read and Classroom Champions Coordinator. “Having a guest reader in the classroom is a fun treat for students, but it also promotes the life-long joy of reading.” Readers represented a cross section of local companies and organizations including: Amegy Bank, American Kids Athletics, AXA Financial Advisors, Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union, CenterPoint Energy, Chick-Fil-A of Katy, City of Katy, CiCi’s Pizza, Cinco Ranch Conservatory of Music, ExxonMobil, First Victoria Bank, Grand Vision Center, Gary Greene Realtors, Harris County Sheriff’s Department, Hasta La Pasta, H-E-B Katy Market, Herff Jones Graduation Center, Houston Aeros, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Katy Area Chamber of Commerce, Kelliwood Animal Hospital, Members Choice Credit Union, Memorial Hermann, Omni Houston Hotel Westside, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, Pediatric Dentists of Katy, Pepper Lawson Construction, Rainforest Café, SmartOrigami, The Shady Lady Window Coverings, Tradition Bank and Wood Group. New Latter-day Saint Congregation in Katy Growth in the Katy area has led to the need for a new congregation in the Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A congregation, called a ward, is a geographic area with about 300-600 church members. When an area sees growth, such that local wards are reaching the upper size limits, a new ward is formed. That is what happened this October in Katy, with the creation of the new Katy Mills Ward.

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture.

• Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

HOLIDAY RECYCLING! If everyone wrapped just three gifts in reused paper, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. If every household reused just two feet of ribbon each year, the resulting 38,000 miles or ribbon could tie a bow around the Earth. 28 billon pounds of edible food is thrown away each year - serve smaller portions; diners can always ask for seconds. The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the U.S. could fill a football field 10 stories high or circle the planet 10 times. Annual trash from gift-wrap and shopping bags total 4 million tons. Think about how you can reduce and help our environment.

LIGHTS: HolidayLeds.com will recycle your old incandescent lights and in return send you a coupon for 25% off any purchase of LED Christmas lights from their web site. The program is open all year round and recycled over 10,000 pounds of old lights in 2009 - 2010. See the website for shipping information. PACKAGING: Cardboard boxes, gift-wrap, gift bags, ribbons and stick-on bows can be kept and re-used again. Don’t know what to do with those pesky foam-packaging peanuts? Many UPS Store locations accept them for reuse. Check with your local UPS Store for additional details (www.theupsstore.com). CHRISTMAS TREE: As lights flicker out on another holiday season, many recycle their Christmas trees through community projects that chip the evergreens into garden mulch. Contact your county to find the nearest drop-off location to pick up dates. Harris County 281855-5600. Fort Bend County 281-342-6171. UNWANTED GIFTS: Unwanted gifts can be donated to your local charities or churches. CHRISTMAS CARDS: A traditional activity, but one which never fails to amuse the kids, is making gift tags for next year’s presents. Use pinking sheers, a hole punch and leftover ribbon. Also, local preschools and daycares often appreciate free items for arts and crafts.
