ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY
Mark your calendars! The annual Canyon Gate Christmas party is scheduled for Saturday, December 21st, from 10 AM - 12 noon, at the Recreation Center. Come join us for lots of fun, food and visits with Santa. Be sure to bring your camera!
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
PHONE 281-492-6020 Closed Saturday Voicemail is available. Calls will be returned during scheduled office hours. Please note the office will have limited holiday hours; the office will close at 12 Noon on Friday, December 20th and will be closed through January 6th. Normal hours will resume Tuesday, January 7th.
HOLIDAY LIGHTS/DÉCOR
Please note that our deed restrictions do not allow holiday lights and/or décor to be displayed before the day after Thanksgiving. Conversely, we ask that it be removed by January 15th of the new year. Please remember that holiday decorations should not be so excessive as to cause a nuisance to neighboring homes.
The current Board of Directors would like to extend warm holiday greetings to all Canyon Gate residents. Please remember that school will be out of session early on December 20th through January 6th. Use extra caution when driving in and around the community, as there will be many children out and about. School being out of session sometimes can mean an increase in other “unconstructive” happenings. Please remember that we need to be more security conscious than usual at Christmas - be sure to remove any valuables from your vehicles and lock your vehicle doors, as well as those of your home. Most thieves are opportunistic, so don’t give them the opportunity! In the past, some residents in the community have experienced vandalism of their holiday decorations. While teens may think it is amusing to damage inflatable decorations or reposition things, it is usually upsetting to the resident and can be expensive. Please pass the word that this is not in the spirit of the season and if kids are caught vandalizing holiday décor, charges may be filed against them by the owner of the decorations.
2014 ASSESSMENTS DUE JANUARY 31, 2014
A $50 discount is offered for those who pay by January 31, 2014 - this now includes credit card payments, as well as cash or check (a 3% transaction fee will be applied for credit card payments or echecks). Dues can be paid ONLINE with your Visa or MasterCard (credit cards can no longer be swiped at the office) at www.canyongateatcincoranch.com. Interest starts accruing March 1st.
PAYMENT PLANS ARE AVAILABLE
Payment plans are available by calling or emailing the onsite office. You must call or email to request the plan - it will not be set up automatically. The earlier you call to set up a plan, the easier it will be to work the plan into your budget. The Board is willing to work with those having financial difficulties, but urges all homeowners to set a plan up early and keep up with the payments.
January 2014 Happy New Year!

WILDLIFE
TIPS FOR AVOIDING DEER/AUTO ACCIDENTS
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center Deer are on the move more than usual during the end of the year. These are the months with the highest number of reported deer-caused accidents. Although sometimes it’s unavoidable, there are some precautions you can take to increase awareness around dusk and dawn when deer are the most active.
• Interior & Exterior House Painting • Cabinet Painting • Sheetrock Repair & Texturing • Wallpaper Removal • Crown Molding Installation
Expert at going from wallpaper to paint!
2. Slow down. A lower road speed increases your reaction time and a few seconds may be all you need to avoid a collision.
• Pressure Washing • Custom Garage Floors • Hang Ceiling Fans & Lights
1. If possible, avoid roads where the trees and brush grow close to the road. If you can’t change your route, at least be aware that these tree-lined roads are where the most accidents occur.

3. Avoid swerving. The majority of people who encounter collisions with deer are injured or killed when they veer off the road to avoid an animal. Often times they will collide with a solid object like a tree or road sign and this is when the worst injuries occur.

4. If you see a deer standing by the side of the road, always slow down. Deer are unpredictable so you can’t assume it will stay there until you’ve passed. 5. If you see one deer, you can assume there are more. Sometimes people relax when they see that one deer has successfully crossed the road. Deer travel in herds so no doubt there are more deer trying to cross. 6. Scan both sides of the road and watch for movement. Because deer are so well camouflaged it’s difficult to see them when there’s tall grass, brush and low tree branches. 7. If you see a downed or injured deer on the road and want to help it, please remember to keep your distance. Deer have very sharp hooves and can harm you. Call 911 and ask for assistance. 8. Since most of the collisions take place at dusk or dawn, supplementary lighting for your vehicle like driving lights can help. Use your high beams whenever you can and make use of your horn. 9. Pay attention to deer crossing signs. They are placed in areas with high deer populations and serve as a reminder to slow down and keep your eyes open. TWRC Wildlife Center is a 35-year-old non-profit organization that helps area communities by rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife and through education. TWRC admits nearly 6,000 animals every year. If you’d like more information or want to know how you can help, please go to www.twrcwildlifecenter.org.

HARRIS COUNTY TOLL TAGS Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement.com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system. The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.
REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns. January 2014

Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation. There is NO PARKING anytime in bicycle lanes. Exceptions to the street parking policy are made only to out of town guests with PRIOR NOTICE given to the office at 281-492-6020. FITNESS CENTER/RECREATION CENTER LOBBY Anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed in the fitness center unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. The recreation center lobby is not to be used as a gathering place for kids to socialize. The Association is asking for all homeowners who use these facilities to help with watching over these areas. If a child is under the age of 18 and is in the fitness center without a parent or guardian or appears to be simply loitering in the lobby, please politely ask them to leave. Thank you.
EZ TAGS FOR FRONT GATE ACCESS The Homeowners’ Association sells EZ tags that will open the resident gate at the Canyon Gate entrance. Residents may purchase these at the onsite office for $35. These EZ tags contain a battery that should last for, approximately, 3 years. The HOA offers a one-year warranty on these tags. If the battery goes bad and your EZ tag stops working within the first year, the tag will be replaced at no cost. If your EZ tag stops working after the one-year time limit, a new EZ tag will need to be purchased.
and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Call the onsite office for additional information. Remember to bring your trash home with you after a party - the clubhouse trashcans are being filled to overflowing regularly. Fines will start being assessed if the rec center trashcans are filled up with party debris.
STREET LIGHT MAINTENANCE To report a streetlight that is not working, call CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222. You will need to report both the number on the base of the pole (six digits) and the street address. You may also report outages online at www.centerpointenergy.com/outage.
OUTDOOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS
RECREATION CENTER RENTAL
Please remember that when planning to do any outdoor home improvements, you must first apply for approval from the Architectural Control Committee. Forms are available via the website at www.canyongateatcincoranch.com/forms or by contacting the office.
The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a two-hour minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules
Please respect your neighbors’ yards and their personal space….. remember that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. Each year a fundamental question arises. Young people especially want to know, “Why do we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?” The following is a brief analysis of the Reverend Martin Luther King Junior’s vision and what he did to change America and the world forever: from Frugé Properties
Tammy Frugé
GRAND LAKES RESIDENT & REALTOR®
Between 1955 and 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. helped change America. He brought to the world’s attention how unfairly blacks were treated. He had the help of millions of Americans, but his strong leadership and unprecedented power of speech gave people the faith and courage to keep working peacefully even when others did not. This led to new laws that ended the practice of keeping people of different backgrounds apart, making life fairer for everyone.

After World War II, many more people felt that new laws were needed in efforts to give African Americans their rights. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that blacks and whites could go to the same schools, saying that “separate but equal” schools were inherently unequal. However, many people still did not want to change. It took a strong leader, a person who believed in peace and justice, to win more freedom for black Americans. Martin Luther King, Jr. was that man.

America will always remember the work of Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year, on the third Monday in January, we celebrate his birthday. This is the first national holiday to honor an individual black American. The legacy of Dr. King lives in each of us and we are responsible to promote, teach and live the American Dream. GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY • Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown.• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist.
8
Katy Pool uses one of the country’s foremost manufacturers of pool equipment Hayward. Hayward’s products to us mean reliability. Ask one of our techs about Hayward’s line of energy efficient pool equipment to find what you could be saving.
• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS
Driving • Avoid driving alone or at night. • Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car. Set your alarm or use an anti-theft device. • If you must shop at night, park in a well-lit area. • Park as close as you can to your destination and take notice of where you parked. • Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside. • Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight. • Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car. • Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door. • When approaching or leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings. Canyon Gate @ CR
January 2014
• Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area. • Ask mall or store security for an escort before leaving your shopping location. AUTOMATED TELLER MACHINE (ATM) • Protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you. • Do not throw your ATM receipt away at the ATM location. SHOPPING • Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. • Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings. • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. • Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home. • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps. • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, “con-artists” may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings. CHILDREN • If possible, leave small children at home with a trusted babysitter. • Teach your child to go to a store clerk and ask for help in case your child is separated from you. • Teach children to stay close to you at all times while shopping. January 2014
Canyon Gate @ CR
• Never allow children to make unaccompanied trips to the restroom. • Children should never be allowed to go to the car alone and they should never be left alone in the car. • Teach children their full name, address and telephone number to give to police officers or mall security. Teach children to immediately inform you if a stranger is bothering them. AT HOME • Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes. • Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer. • Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied. • Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home. STRANGERS AT YOUR DOOR • Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts. • It is not uncommon for criminals to take advantage of the generosity of people during the holiday season by soliciting donations door-to-door for charitable causes, although no charity is involved.

KATY ISD’S 16TH ANNUAL PROMISE TO READ
Community members from Katy and the surrounding area recently stopped what they were doing to read to students in more than 375 classes as part of Katy ISD’s 16th annual Promise to Read program. Through Promise to Read, volunteers promise to spend 30 minutes reading to an elementary classroom during two weeks in November. This year, 10 Katy ISD elementary campuses hosted the event with Partners in Education: Cimarron, Creech, Franz, Golbow, Exley, Rhoads, Rylander, Williams, Wilson and Winborn Elementary Schools. Host campuses rotate each year so that, over a three-year period, every Katy ISD elementary has an opportunity to participate.

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org.
