In the past, some residents in the community have experienced vandalism of their holiday decorations. While teens may think it is amusing to damage inflatable decorations or reposition things, it is usually upsetting to the resident and can be expensive. Are crows as smart as your 7-year-old? Numerous scientific studies indicate the answer to that question is yes. In a study done in 2014, crows were trained to match cards by rewarding them with food when a correct match was made. Then the experimenters decided to complicate the test by showing the crows cards that were not identical but had the same pattern. The crows were still able to match them. Then there’s the story of 8-year-old Gabi Mann from Seattle who began feeding neighborhood crows and in exchange for food, the birds began to bring her gifts.

Crows are easily imprinted and when a crow is brought to TWRC Wildlife Center for rehabilitation, steps are taken to insure this doesn’t happen. If imprinted, the bird loses it fear of humans and can’t be released. While rehabilitating, human contact is kept to a minimum. Sometimes caregivers where masks or refrain from letting the bird see their face. This will insure a successful release. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.

• Crows recognize faces and hold grudges. Just ask some researchers in Seattle what happens when you try an experiment on crows that they don’t like. • Crows have regional dialects and they communicate with each other. • Crows are problem-solvers. A crow unable to crack nuts was observed putting the nuts on the road and waiting until cars passed over them. • Crows use tools. In one experiment, a crow used a wire to retrieve a stick and then used it to reach some food it wanted. It was even smart enough to realize it had to bend the wire first in order to retrieve the stick. • Crows are caring and nurturing. In 1999, Wallace and Ann Collito of Massachusetts saw a very small kitten in their yard. They observed a crow feed the kitten and protect her from other animals.

EZ TAGS FOR FRONT GATE ACCESS

The Homeowners’ Association sells EZ tags that will open the resident gate at the Canyon Gate entrance. Residents may purchase these at the onsite office for $35. These EZ tags contain a battery that should last for approximately 3 years. The HOA offers a one-year warranty on these tags. If the battery goes bad and your EZ tag stops working within the first year, the tag will be replaced at no cost. If your EZ tag stops working after the one-year time limit, a new EZ tag will need to be purchased.

RECREATION CENTER RENTAL

The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a two-hour minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the January 2016

GARDENING TIPS FOR JANUARY

• Birds: Provide food and fresh water. More birds die from lack of water than from lack of food. • Cacti: Semi-dormant now. Reduce watering. • Camellias: Plants may be moved. Pick up and discard fallen blooms. • Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting. • Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in. • Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown. • House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias. • Lawns: Remove thatch aerate, and feed with low nitrogen mixture. • Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer’s directions before spraying. • Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses. • Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist. • Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure. • Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

It may be tempting to walk across your lawn as a shortcut, but use the designated walking paths if possible. And of course, if you park a car or truck on your lawn, your grass may not fare so well. 3. Use stray leaves to your advantage. Not only can a solid blanket of leaves suffocate your lawn, but they can provide warmth and shelter for a variety of lawn nuisances like rodents, fungi and insects. GRATITUDE CAN MAKE YOU HAPPIER, HEALTHIER Health experts, psychologists and different schools of philosophy and religion said that gratitude is essential to live longer and happier lives and several studies on the scientific side of thankfulness also prove it. Researchers of a study published in Personal Relationships journal found that gratitude was linked to improved marriage

outcomes. After surveying more than 460 couples by phone, the results showed that the power of thank you can go a long way in helping significant others feel appreciated, that their partners are committed to the relationship and that the partnership will last. Gratitude also helped protect a couple’s relationship from divorce and separation and that marital commitment is also protected from the negative consequences due to communication breakdown during conflicts. “Even if a couple is experiencing distress and difficulty in other areas, gratitude in the relationship can help promote positive marital outcomes,” said Allen Barton, a postdoctoral research associate at UGA’s Center for Family Research and the study’s lead author. Another recent research from the American Psychological Association published last April said that asymptomatic heart failure patients who kept a gratitude journal had markedly decreased levels of inflammation and improved cardiac health. More than 180 men and women participated in the study and had to keep a gratitude journal for at least eight weeks. Researchers found that those who committed to these journals had reduced circulation on inflammatory biomarkers of the disease as well as improved heart contractility and function. “It seems that a more grateful heart is indeed a more healthy heart and that gratitude journaling is an easy way to support cardiac health,” said Paul J. Mills, professor of family medicine and public health at the University of California. How does one practice gratitude even at times when it feels like there is nothing to be thankful for at all? STAGE YOUR HOME FOR SALE! Consider this: a staged home is one that sells faster, says The Real Estate Staging Association, which did a survey on this topic. Here are some tips from real estate agents on how to stage your home ready to sell: Declutter and depersonalize. Declutter books, pictures, knickknacks and anything else that is exclusively you. Paint walls in neutral tones. Real estate experts believe certain paint colors inspire buyers to put in an offer and often suggest that sellers repaint their home in these hues to create a blank canvas for optimal staging: Shaker Beige, Jackson Tan, Linen White and Mellow Yellow. (Most paint stores can do color matches) Turn on all the lights. If you don’t have enough light, things can look drab and dreary, especially if you have showings on a gray day. Adding floor lamps to rooms that don’t have enough light brighten things up. Set the table. Set up a blank dining table for a dinner party so there is a wow factor when buyers walk in and see your beautifully arranged table. Add mirrors. Mirrors make rooms look larger. Keep furniture proportional to the room. Strategically placing a minimal amount of furniture in a small space works better than over-crowding it with too much furniture Minimize art and decorations. When staging a room, use paintings that are landscapes or abstract or figurative art that brings out an accent color in the room without being too specific. Turn your bathroom into a spa. Purchase solid white towels, rugs and shower curtains when preparing to sell your home. These simple luxuries don’t cost much, but can make a significant difference in the feel of the room. Add pops of color. Now that you’ve painted the walls a pleasure neutral hue, think about adding in pops of color. These could be colorful pillows on couches and beds or a bowl of green Granny Smith apples in the kitchen. Clean out and organize closets. Make sure hangers are evenly spaced apart and match your shoes, purses and accessories to give a color-coordinated organized appearance inside your closet. Clear off countertops. Get rid of all clutter in bathrooms and kitchens except for the bare necessities that “read” bathroom (soap dish and a hand towel) or kitchen (coffee machine). Put a cookbook on a stand on a kitchen counter, Kitchens are often the number one priority on a buyer’s list, so make yours look as clean, open and spacious as possible. Katy ISD is one of 425 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 6th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to Advanced Placement (AP) course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Reaching these goals indicates that the District is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit from rigorous AP course work. Since 2014, the number of Katy ISD students participating in AP exams increased by 13 percent and more than 7,700 students earned a 3 or higher on these exams. SUPERINTENDENT CELEBRATED STUDENT AND STAFF ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In November, Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey spoke to hundreds of Katy community members, dignitaries and staff during his annual State of the District Address. Along with a snapshot of the District’s accomplishments and current enrollment growth, Frailey shared with attendees an update on 2014 bond projects, as well as his vision for the future of the District.

During the address, Frailey shared some of the District’s major accomplishments, such as being recognized on the College Board AP Honor Roll for increasing access to AP course work and increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher, and being recognized as the 57th largest district in the nation. During the 2014-2015 school year, Katy ISD had more than 60 students named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, 85 student athletes that signed letters of intent to play sports at colleges and universities across the nation and the Class of 2015 graduates accepted more than $21 million in scholarships. Attendees also enjoyed special guest speakers Chuck Brawner, Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Katy; Lance LaCour, President and CEO of the Katy Area Economic Development Council; Ann Hodge, President and CEO of the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce and Carol Adams, author of ‘Historic Katy, An Illustrated History’ and former City of Katy Councilmember.

The 2016 Women’s Quarter Marathon is a women’s-only race to empower women and young girls through fitness and a healthy lifestyle. The route will start at Central Green Park, run through Cinco Ranch and back to Central Green Park where the post-race party will take place. The distance is a quarter of a marathon, which is 6.55 miles. The Mini-Quarter Marathon is 1.25 miles and is designed for girls under the age of 13 who also want to join the movement. Registration opened September 15, 2015 for this new Houston running event. Girls Inc. of Greater Houston’s mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold by developing programs of informal education that empowers girls to live and succeed in an inequitable world. NATURE PROGRAMS FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard. NCL LADY BIRD CHAPTER HOSTED 2 ND ANNUAL DUCK DASH RACE TO BENEFIT PHILANTHROPIES On October 4th, National Charity League Lady Bird Chapter held their second annual Duck Dash at Willow Fork Country Club. The girls sold 250 rubber ducks for the race to raise money for one of the 20 philanthropies the organization supports. To receive Scouting’s highest award, Dalton had to earn 21 merit badges, serve as leader of his troop and complete a major community service project.

Family Reading Club - January 24th-March 5th This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn and have fun together. Families participate in the program by reading books and completing optional “challenges” that can be done at home. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to participate. Families who complete the program by reading 36 books or for 6 hours - 6 books per week or for 60 minutes per week - are eligible to receive a book bag for the family and will have their named entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. Each branch library will have a drawing for the gift card on March 7th. A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 24th. Families may also register at one of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system.

RUOK PROGRAM

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will

have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. LIVING WITH URBAN WILDLIFE

Here in Houston there are many kinds of wild animals that thrive in urban areas. Most of these are relatively common animals such as birds, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, skunks, snakes and many more…These animals are often attracted to human dominated landscapes because they are highly adaptable, opportunistic feeders that are energy-efficient. By highly adaptable, we mean that they can easily adjust to changes in their environment. Opportunistic feeders are animals that are generalists, eating a variety of plant and animal material including food often left out by people. These animals are energy-efficient in that when given the choice between a meal that has to be chased or one that is easily found in a backyard, they will always pick the easy meal. Everything these animals do is related to food availability. Preventing Conflicts - Keep Wild Things Wild! Here are some simple rules for living with the wildlife found in urban areas. These tips explain how to live with and enjoy wildlife responsibly. Our behavior as people affects the behavior of wildlife. Don’t feed wildlife! Direct feeding can alter an animal’s normal behavior. Problems occur when animals become habituated (used to humans). Keep trash and garbage around your yard contained and picked up. Do not put your trash out for pick up the next day unless it is in a sealed container that wildlife cannot get

into as many wildlife species are most active at night. Keep compost in a container that allows the material to vent but keeps wildlife from getting into it. Do not feed pets outdoors. The pet food attracts wildlife right to your door. Restrain or secure your pets. Although free roaming pets are more likely to be killed by automobiles than by wild animals, there are wildlife predators like coyotes, foxes or hawks that view cats and small dogs as potential prey and/or competition for food resources. For the safety of your pets, keep them restrained at all times. Remove bird feeders especially if wildlife is seen around the feeders. The seed in bird feeders can attract many small and medium-sized mammals (squirrels, mice, rats). These, in turn attract animals that prey on squirrels, mice and rats. If possible, try to find a bird feeder that does not allow seed to spill. Close off crawl spaces under porches, decks and sheds. Wildlife will use these areas as dens for resting and raising their young. Do protect livestock and produce. Wildlife predators will prey upon livestock. There are techniques for protecting livestock from predation. Fencing can be useful in keeping wildlife out of certain areas. It is a good idea to clear fallen fruit from around fruit trees in the fall. Don’t approach or try to touch wildlife. Wildlife which becomes habituated may approach other humans expecting food or attention. This is not safe for the animals or for people. Don’t provoke an encounter. Do educate your neighbors. Share this information with your neighbors since your good efforts could be futile if neighbors are purposely or unintentionally providing food or shelter for wildlife.

You could make this on National Spaghetti Day January 4th! INGREDIENTS: 1 (8 ounce) package spaghetti, broken into 2-inch pieces 1 egg, beaten 1/4 cup milk 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt 1 (16 ounce) jar spaghetti sauce 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 4 ounces pepperoni sausage, sliced DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain and rinse with cold water. Combine egg, milk, 1/2 cup of the mozzarella cheese, salt and garlic salt in a large bowl. Stir in cooked spaghetti; mix well. Spread mixture into prepared baking dish. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and reduce temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spread sauce over spaghetti. Sprinkle with oregano, basil and the remaining 1 1/2 cups mozzarella. Top with pepperoni, return to oven and bake until cheese is bubbly and beginning to brown, about 30 minutes more. INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup butter facebook.com/KrenekPrinting 2 tablespoons cornstarch 2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tart apples - peeled, cored and sliced 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 (15 ounce) package pastry for double-crust pie 1/2 cup confectionersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sugar 1 tablespoon milk 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon butter, softened DIRECTIONS: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup cream and 1/4 cup butter. Heat until butter is melted, stirring occasionally. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, 2 tablespoons milk and vanilla; stir into saucepan. Cook until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, and set aside to cool slightly. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). In a medium bowl, combine the apples, flour and cinnamon. Mix well. Line a 9 inch pie pan with pie dough. Pour thickened filling mixture into pastry-lined pie pan. Arrange apple mixture evenly over filling. Top with second crust, seal and flute the edges. Cut slits in top crust. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown and apples are tender. Cool for at least 30 minutes. In small bowl, combine confectionersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sugar, 1 tablespoon milk, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and 1 tablespoon softened butter. Blend until smooth; pour evenly over warm pie.
