FIrEwOrks The HOA would like to limit fireworks by only allowing them until midnight (12 Am) on July 4th. There are many people with small children in the community and late-night fireworks can be very disturbing. We also get reports of fireworks debris being found in yards and on roofs, as well as the park. Residents who shoot fireworks off (or allow their kids to shoot them) must be sure to CLEAN UP THE mESS afterwards (this includes parking lots, such as at the park or the Rec Center). We find many residents simply leave the mess for their neighbors (or the HOA) to clean up. Please note: we will be citing residents who have debris left in front of their home afterward.

SECURITy OFFICERS many of you may have noticed that we have had some personnel changes at the front gate. For those residents who continue to enter the community via the visitor’s lane, please do not get upset if one of the new officers does not recognize you and asks for ID; they are simply doing their job. If you do not use the EZ tag lane for entry, be prepared to show your ID when you enter. Alternatively, resident stickers can be obtained from the office to help minimize the time spent at the entry.

As many of you may have noticed, the Board of Directors is cracking down on overnight parking in the community and stickering vehicles that are parked in violation. There are a multitude of reasons for minimizing street parking. Our streets are simply not wide enough to accommodate cars parking along both sides. Street parking can make it difficult for neighbors to pull in and out of their driveway. It also impacts police patrols as it hampers their view down the street. Cars parked on the street are also more likely to be a target of thieves. most importantly, multiple vehicles parked in the street can slow down emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and ambulances - every second counts in an emergency and if the streets are clogged with parked vehicles, it makes navigating in the community difficult.

While the board understands that many homes have multiple vehicles with kids home from school, etc., they are requesting that each homeowner make an effort to minimize street parking. Garages are meant to be used to house vehicles - not store junk. If yours is too full for any vehicles to be parked, perhaps it is time to consider a storage unit. Please make every effort to keep your vehicles off the street.

Homeowners need to be aware that Texas is home to many snakes, including venomous and non-venomous varieties. With the natural areas surrounding the community, Canyon Gate is especially prone to snakes, especially the park in the back of the community. Please be vigilant when in grassy areas that snakes may hide. If you should see a snake, please do not approach it - they will not normally attack or bite unless provoked. We have also received reports of alligators in the bayous nearby. Please use caution when walking the bayous - and be sure your dogs are careful as well. N

HARRIS COUNTY TOLL TAGS Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement. com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. PLEASE REMEMBER to have your old tag number available when you are registering a new tag, so we can remove it from the system. The sticker-type EZ tags can be programmed into the system. However, the signal is not as powerful as that of the battery-powered tags. Please approach the gate slowly and stay as close to the left median as possible (that is where the reader is located); the new tags can’t be read by the system until you are very close to the gate.

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11:00 PM - 9:00 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problem-free residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns. Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation. There is NO PARKING anytime in bicycle lanes. Exceptions to the street parking policy are made only to out of town guests with PRIOR NOTICE given to the office at 281-492-6020. Be sure to give your name and home address, the year, make, model and license plate number of the car, as well as the specific dates that car will be parked in the street.

These EZ tags contain a battery that should last for, approximately, 3 years. The HOA offers a one-year warranty on these tags. The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a two-hour minimum. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Call the onsite office for additional information. Remember to bring your trash home with you after a party - the clubhouse trashcans are being filled to overflowing regularly. Fines will start being assessed if the Rec Center trashcans are filled up with party debris.

In summer, lawns get hammered. There’s extra wear and tear from weekend play, stress from summer heat and corresponding pressure to cut back on watering due to increased utility rates. But if you start a sensible lawn-care program now, you can strengthen your turf going into summer, help it stay greener and give it a better chance against the ravages of insects and disease.

**Use kosher salt or sea salt on your vegetables to bring out extra moisture. Seasoning with salt and pepper both before and after grilling helps to make them sweet and full of flavor. **Someone in the family doesn’t like grilled vegetables? Try this trick. Sprinkle a little sugar on the vegetables half way through the cooking. This gives them a wonderful caramel flavor.

Plans are also under way to launch an aircraft for predisaster photo missions using CAP digital and multidirectional, full-motion video cameras. CAP personnel from across Texas and Louisiana are en route to the command post for this exercise, which is expected to last several days. The incident commander at West Houston Airport is Lt. Col. Rick Woolfolk of the Texas Wing. Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with more than 61,000 members nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and was credited by the AFRCC with saving 54 lives in fiscal year 2011. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to nearly 27,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet program. CAP received the World Peace Prize in 2011 and has been performing missions for America for 70 years. CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans. Katy’s Gifted students Build the Great Wall of China With leGo & desiGn Computer Games Over 250 excited elementary students and their parents gathered at Taylor High School - their mission was to build the Great Wall of China out of Legos at the Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented (KPGT) and Katy ISD GT Design Date. Led by Bricks 4 Kidz, the students tackled the project with gusto. Whilst their wall may not be visible from space, their creation was certainly more colorful than the original. Meanwhile 4th and 5th grade GT students took over a lab to design their own computer games. Led by techno whizzes from WonderSpace, screens lit up with vibrant space scenes, volcanoes and robots as new found computer skills met lively imaginations. Triumphs were congratulated; tricky bits negotiated with new friends and adults marveled at the incredible attention span of children so intent on completing a project they were totally engrossed for hours.

KATY ISD ANNOUNCES 2012 DISTRICT-WIDE TEACHERS OF THE YEAR Two outstanding teachers have been chosen as the 2012 Katy ISD District-wide Teachers of the Year. Colleen Dominguez, fifth grade teacher at Bear Creek Elementary and Brittany Spurlock, English teacher at Miller Career & Technology Center, were notified during a surprise visit from Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey.

s (ARDIPLANK )NSTALLATION

Katy ISD Board of Trustees Treasurer, Neal Howard; Brittany Spurlock, Miller Career & Technology Center and Colleen Dominguez, Bear Creek Elementary.

Dominguez, this year’s Elementary District-wide Teacher of the Year, is a self-contained bilingual teacher and team leader. She has taught in Katy ISD since 2008 and holds a B.S. in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin. Dominguez says that what makes teaching rewarding for her is to see students grow academically and in character as the year progresses. Spurlock, this year’s Secondary District-wide Teacher of the Year, teaches both English III & IV, and has been with Katy ISD since 1998. She holds a B.A. in secondary education, English and Dance from the University of Houston and is currently working on her Master’s in English. Spurlock enjoys fueling energy in her classroom by celebrating accomplishments and creating a desire amongst students to want to do better. She also enjoys guiding first-year teachers through the fears and challenges of education. Both District-wide Teachers of the Year were recognized during the April Board of Trustees meeting and will be nominated by Katy ISD for the 2012 Region 4 Texas Teacher of the Year program.

Prairie rose Cadette trooP 3068 of Katy Cadette Troop 3068 of Katy recently completed the Journey aMaze by planning and carrying out a “take action” project by hosting a “Friendship Fair” for 40 Junior Girl Scouts. There were all types of fun friendship activities that included skits, crafts and unique games focusing on the ins and outs and highs and lows of friendship. One main lesson they taught the younger Girl Scouts was to always T-H-I-N-K before speaking:

2nd Generation Tree Expert

T - is it true? H - is it helpful? I - is it inspiring? N - is it necessary? K - is it kind? These Cadettes felt passionate about teaching the younger girls tips and skills to better prepare themselves for their upcoming Junior High years as the Cadettes are well aware that friendship is not always an easy road.
