July 2015 FIREWORKS
ONSITE OFFICE HOURS Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
8:15 AM 8:15 AM Closed 8:15 AM 8:15 AM
to 3:15 PM to 3:15 PM to 3:15 PM to 3:15 PM
PHONE 281-492-6020 Closed Saturday Voicemail is available. Calls will be returned during scheduled office hours.
Our Deed Restrictions do prohibit the discharge of fireworks within the subdivision, however, enforcement is at the Board’s discretion. Excessive use of fireworks over the last few years has been noted and numerous complaints have been received from residents about them. Each year we find more debris and the fireworks are being set off for days in advance of and after the actual holidays. The HOA limits the use of fireworks to July 4th and New Years (12/31) ONLY. Additionally, the use of these fireworks must end no later than 12 Midnight on July 4th and 1 AM on New Years Day. Any household known to be setting off fireworks on any other date/time will be cited.
The office will be closed Friday, July 3rd in observance of Independence Day. The onsite office will be closed Friday, July 10th through Friday, July 17th. Neither email nor voicemail will be monitored during this time. Please contact Cindy Thompson at 281-785-0536 or cindy@ccbpropertymanagement.com should you require assistance.
Happy Independence Day!
We would, once again, like to urge those who set off fireworks to use some common sense and have some regard for neighbors. For those with small children or who may have to work the following day, fireworks going off until 3 or 4 in the morning is a very real problem. CLEAN UP YOUR FIREWORKS DEBRIS!!!! Every New Year and 4th of July, the HOA finds mounds of firework debris left in the park and common areas as well as the streets. Those individuals who leave their debris in the common areas are costing ALL homeowners in the community when the HOA has to have it cleaned up. Homes with fireworks debris left in the street will receive violation letters, so please clean up after your celebration! Many animals are terrified of the loud noises created by fireworks, so please keep your dogs and cats inside for the night. 4th of July is traditionally one of the busiest holidays for animal shelters because so many animals get loose trying to run and hide from the noise and commotion - so avoid the problem by leaving them inside!

SUMMER AND KIDS
SUMMER 2015 POOL SCHEDULE OPENING MAY 5 TH The Board has contracted with Sweetwater Pools again to manage the pool for the 2015 season. June 4th* - August 23rd Mon. Closed Thursday, June 4th 12 PM - 8 PM* *Last day of KISD - Early dismissal Tue. - Sat. 10 AM - 8 PM Sun. 1 PM - 8 PM
If you see something suspicious, please call the Ft. Bend County Sheriff (281-341-4665 or 911) to report it directly, not the security guard at the front of the community. The information given to the police needs to be first hand, not to mention the security officer may be delayed in calling due to traffic at the gate.
August 24th - September 7th Mon. - Fri. Closed Sat. 10 AM - 8 PM Sun. 1 PM - 8 PM Labor Day 10 AM - 8 PM The pool is closed for cleaning on Mondays. However, if a holiday falls on a Monday, the pool will be open on the holiday and cleaning will be scheduled for the Tuesday following. Those interested in lifeguarding with Sweetwater can contact them directly by going to www.swlifeguards.com.
POOL USE AT REC CENTER PARTIES
Please note that the Clubhouse must be rented in order to have use of the pool for a party. Should a homeowner wish to utilize the pool during a Clubhouse Rental, be aware that the pool will not be closed down for private parties if it is during normal pool hours. Additionally, extra lifeguards must be hired (via the lifeguard company) and paid for separately from the Clubhouse Rental. Please contact Sweetwater Pools or the onsite office for more details. There is a limit of four guests per resident at the pool, so please be sure not to bring more than that number.
2
By the time this article is published, school will have been out for a few weeks. With the arrival of summer comes the increase in the number of kids in the community. Sadly, this usually means an increase in vandalism, reckless driving and general disturbances in the subdivision. If you witness a reckless or dangerous driver, please try to get the license plate number and contact the office with it. People sometimes don’t realize how their reckless ways may affect others - and there are too many small children in the community who could get hurt if someone loses control of their vehicle.
CONTACT INFORMATION
Please be sure to notify the office (not the guardhouse) of any contact information changes. The guards do not have access to the master listing used at the gate, therefore, any changes need to be made through the management office. Also, if contacting the office about balance inquiries, EZ tag updates, etc., please be sure you provide your address!
FITNESS CENTER/RECREATION CENTER LOBBY
Anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed in the fitness center unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. The recreation center lobby is not to be used as a gathering place for kids to socialize. The Association is asking for all homeowners who use these facilities to help with watching over these areas. If a child is under the age of 18 and is in the fitness center without a parent or guardian or appears to be simply loitering in the lobby, please politely ask them to leave. Thank you.

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING REGULATIONS
The Association would like to remind everyone that there is NO CURBSIDE PARKING between the hours of 11 PM - 9 AM. VEHICLES IN VIOLATION WILL BE STICKERED. If vehicles are found repeatedly in violation, they will be towed at the owner’s expense. These parking regulations were put in to place to alleviate the difficulty school buses were having navigating the neighborhood and to allow a time for problemfree residential access for emergency vehicles. Safety issues relating to morning work traffic and children going to school, garbage trucks, bike lanes and homeowner complaints about blocked driveways were also concerns.
TRAVERS & TRAVERS A TTORNEYS • M EDIATORS
FAMILY LAW
Please remember that angle or perpendicular parking is against deed restrictions. It is also a violation of local ordinance. Please remember that the front and back wheels of a vehicle must be parallel and within 18 inches of the curb. Angle or perpendicular parking may prohibit police, fire or any other emergency personnel from ingress or egress. Violators will have their vehicles stickered and if necessary, towed, if the vehicle is repeatedly found in violation.

ANIMAL / PET CONTROL
Please respect your neighbor’s yard and their personal space. Remember, that pets must be confined to a fenced backyard or within the house and must not allowed to bark all night long or cause a nuisance to neighbors. They must be on a leash at all times when away from this contained environment. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility, when walking their pet within the subdivision, to keep ALL areas free of pet debris. Please remember that cats must also be confined. To raise awareness of the benefits of efficient watering practices, the Irrigation Association has named July Smart Irrigation Month. Make time this summer to be sure you’re getting the most out of your irrigation system, while keeping utility bills low and helping to protect the environment. • Adapt your watering schedule to the weather and the season. Familiarize yourself with the settings on your irrigation controller and adjust the watering schedule regularly. • Schedule watering for each zone separately. For each area, take into account type of sprinkler, sun or shade exposure, soil type and plant requirements. • Inspect your system monthly. Check for leaks, broken or clogged heads and other problems orengage a certified irrigation professional to regularly check your system. Clean microirrigation filters as needed. • Adjust sprinkler heads. Remove obstructions that prevent sprinklers from distributing water evenly and make sure you’re watering plants, not sidewalks or buildings. • Have your system audited. Hire a professional to conduct an irrigation audit and uniformity test to make sure each zone is being watered evenly. • Install an inexpensive rain shutoff switch. Required by law in many states, these money-saving sensors prevent watering in rainy weather and can be retrofitted to almost any system. • Consider “smart” technology. Climate or soil moisture sensor-based controllers evaluate weather or soil moisture conditions and then automatically adjust the watering schedule to meet the specific needs of your landscape. • Think about low-volume drip irrigation for plant beds. Install microirrigation for gardens, trees and shrubs to minimize evaporation and runoff. Options include drip (also known as trickle), micro-spray jets, micro-sprinklers and bubbler irrigation. • Water at the right time of day. Watering when the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are cooler minimizes evaporation by as much as 30 percent. The best times to water are late afternoon, evening and just before sunrise. • Water more often for shorter periods. Setting your system to run for two, 5-minute intervals lets soil absorb more water than watering for 10 minutes at one time. • Water only when needed. Saturate root zones and let the soil dry. Overwatering results in shallow roots and encourages weeds, disease and fungus growth. Smart Irrigation Month is an initiative of the Irrigation Association, a non-profit industry organization dedicated to promoting efficient irrigation. Learn more at www.smartirrigationmonth.org. To find an IA-certified professional to design, install, maintain or audit your irrigation system, visit www.irrigation.org/hirecertified. VULTURES
GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
You always know when an animal has met an untimely and unfortunate death when you see Black Vultures or Turkey Vultures. The Black Vulture has a featherless black-grey head while the Turkey Vulture has a featherless red head. The Black Vulture is also distinguishable by white-tipped wings that can be seen while in flight. Their diets consist primarily of carrion but the Black Vulture will sometimes attack and kill prey.
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia and portulaca so you’ll have color until frost. Don’t let seedlings dry out. • In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black spot and insect treatments. Water 2” once per week. • Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom production. • Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them. • Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle, coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia. • Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings. • Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2 - 3” per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure during waterings.
BY CHERYL CONLEY, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER
Turkey Vultures use their eyesight and keen sense of smell to find their food. By flying low, they are able to detect the gases produced when an animal begins to decay. They prefer to feed on animals that are recently dead. Black Vultures can’t smell but will often follow Turkey Vultures to find food. Most of what vultures eat would make any other animal very sick, but they are strong animals with an incredible digestive system and a very strong immune system. Their stomachs are extremely acidic. They can usually survive eating carcasses infected with botulism, anthrax, cholera and salmonella. They rid our environment of what could potentially cause the spread of diseases. Because of their eating habits, vultures would probably never win a “My Favorite Bird” contest but they play an important role in keeping our environment cleaner and definitely smelling better. They are nature’s clean-up crew. If you’d like to learn more about the animals that we share our world with, visit our website at www.twrcwildlifecenter.org. Opportunities are also available for inhome and on-site volunteers. TWRC Wildlife Center, 10801 Hammerly Boulevard, Houston, TX 77043. Call 713-468-TWRC.

FAMILY OF LINDSAY LANEIGH FERRILL PARTNER WITH SHIELD BEARER TO SAVE LIVES On April 25, 2012, Lindsay Laneigh Ferrill’s life was taken in a horrific dating violence incident. Her mother, Shari Nightingale, and Lindsay’s family and friends have met for years in an effort to honor Lindsay’s life by helping others. Thanks to a recent partnership, Lindsay’s Light Fund was developed as a way to better prevent dating violence. Now Lindsay’s story is an important part of the Shield Bearer Dating Violence Prevention curriculum and with your help we are spreading this crucial prevention program to a larger number of high school students. In 2007, Shield Bearer responded to a local high school experiencing a high number of dating violence incidents. Since then the highly effective Dating Violence Prevention Program has been delivered to over 20,000 students in high schools, churches and community centers. The limiting factor has always been funding. Shield Bearer is a 501c3 nonprofit celebrating 10 years of providing professional counseling services to human traffic victims, crime victims, veterans and military families and individual couples and families. Shield Bearer also provides community based prevention programs and services in schools, churches and community organizations. In 2014, Shield Bearer served 15,207 people in the Greater Houston area. For more information, you can check out www.ShieldBearer.org and click on the Join the Fight button or contact us at 281-894-7222.

HOUSTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER EXPLORING LIFE, LOVE & LAUGHTER The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) announces its 10th mainstage season, which explores life, love and laughter through timeless musicals, zany comedies, a classic murder mystery and a Shakespearean comedy. 2015 • Shakespeare - comes to life, June 12th - July 5th with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The canon’s most enchanted comedy pursues love with calculated abandon! This story of mortal and immortal paramours set in a mythical forest is one that will cast a spell on lovers of all ages. • 1776 - Closing this exciting season, July 24th - August 16th, is the American musical, 1776. With revolutionary immediacy, our lofty founding fathers are found to be genuine people who debate, bargain and fray one another’s nerves as they struggle on the tortuous road to independence. This musical witness to the creation of one of the most eloquent documents in history will stir the soul of every American.

WHY WE CELEBRATE WITH FIREWORKS ON JULY 4 TH
Ever wondered why we set off gorgeous displays of fireworks in our sky each Fourth of July? Apparently, the history of fireworks in America is as old our country itself. On our first Independence Day celebration, held in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, when the country was still in the midst of the Revolutionary War against Britain, citizens came together to watch their new nation’s sky illuminated in a grand display meant to raise spirits. One of our Founding Fathers had even predicted that Americans would commemorate their independence with pomp and circumstance. On July 3, 1776, a day ahead of the Continental Congress’ initial adoption of the Declaration of Independence, Massachusetts delegate John Adams penned a letter to his wife, envisioning the festivities. Fireworks certainly have grown and not only in complexity. The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) estimates that more than 14,000 fireworks displays light up the nation’s sky each Independence Day. PET FRIENDLY 4 TH OF JULY TIPS As we prepare for barbeques and fireworks this Fourth of July, think about how to keep your pets safe and calm during this Independence Day celebration. • It is safer to keep your pets at home during Fourth of July celebrations instead of bringing him/her to your neighbor’s party. • Dogs can be startled by the loud noise of fireworks. Once the festivities begin, keep your pet in a safe room where he/she can feel comfortable. • Block outside sights and sounds by lowering the blinds and turning on the television. Play soothing music in the background to counteract the cacophony during the rockets’ red glare. • Avoid scraps from the grill. While tempting to our pets, any sudden change to your pets’ diet can cause stom- Only Jesus Saves More Marriages ach upset. In addition, some certain foods 25% OFF like onions, avocado, for First 4 Months grapes and raisins First-Time Customers Only can be toxic. • Human products can be dangerous to animals.
