DEER ANTLERS
BY CHERYL CONLEY, TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER Male deer or bucks, grow and lose their antlers every year. The antlers begin growing in early spring and by late summer they are fully-grown. Deer antlers are one of the fastest growing tissues known to man and can grow up to ½ inch per day. While growing, which can take up to 4 months, they are covered in a soft, hairy skin called velvet. Velvet is a living tissue composed of a high concentration of nerve cells and blood vessels. Velvet provides protection, blood and nutrients to the antlers. Because of the increased nerve cells on the antlers, they become more sensitive to pain than any other part of the body. Bucks are quick to learn the exact location of their antlers and learn to negotiate their way through wooded areas to avoid contact with limbs and other structures that will cause them pain. In early fall, a hardened ring forms at the base of the antlers and the blood supply to the velvet is shut off. The deer will begin rubbing the velvet off in preparation for the rutting or mating season. During rut, bucks want to show their dominance. Their antlers are used during sparring matches with other bucks. Early in the season, these matches are nothing more than some pushing and shoving but by the peak of the breeding season, they can turn into full-blown fights.

After rut, the buck’s testosterone levels fall. This causes a weakening of the tissue and bone. The antlers simply fall off. There is no pain or discomfort to the animal. In a few weeks, the cycle begins again and new antlers will begin to grow. An interesting fact is that there are antlered does. Yes, I said DOES. A doe with velvet covered antlers usually has normal female reproductive organs and can still produce fawns. Hardened antlers on a doe are almost always male pseudohermophrodites, which means the “condition in which an individual of one sex has external genitalia superficially resembling those of the other sex.” These animals have female external genitalia, but have male organs (testicles) internally. TWRC Wildlife Center’s mission is to promote environmental conservation through public education and rehabilitation of native Texas wildlife. If you’d like to know how you can get involved, call 713-468-TWRC or go to www.twrcwildlifecenter.org.

Please call the onsite office (281-492-6020) or email us to register your Harris County toll tag (phardilek@ccbpropertymanagement.com). The following information is required: Name, Address, Vehicle Make & Model and Old and New EZ Tag Numbers. Please do not give tag information to the guards - they do not have access to the gate computer. CINCO MUD 8 NOVEMBER CONSERVATION TIPS
November is the time to turn off your sprinkler system for the winter. Turn off the water supply to the sprinkler. Winterize your lawn. If you didn’t check your bathrooms during October National Bathroom Month, check for toilet leaks, replace all faucet aerators and install low flow showerheads. Water Conservation is year round. Following these tips will help you conserve water and save money: 1. Replace all FAUCET AERATORS annually. 2. In the shower, INSTALL LOW-FLOW SHOWERHEADS and shorten showering times. 3. Check TOILETS for LEAKS and if necessary REPLACE with a WATERSENSE HIGH EFFICIENCY TOILET. 4. When washing dishes or laundry, wash full loads. 5. When watering your lawn, water ONLY TWICE a week.
RECREATION CENTER RENTAL
The recreation center has a room available for parties, meeting, reunions, etc. A signed contract plus a $300 security deposit will hold your reservation. Homeowners must be current on their dues (or payment plans) and rental fees must be received prior to the party. The rental rate is $35 an hour with a twohour minimum. The key for the clubhouse is to be signed out and returned to the guards in the guardhouse. Please READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY before signing - this is a binding legal document and the rules and regulations stipulated in the contract will be enforced. Call the onsite office for additional information. Remember to bring your trash home with you after a party - the clubhouse trashcans are being filled to overflowing regularly. Fines will start being assessed if the rec center trashcans are filled up with party debris.

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA
• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.
Canyon Gate @ CR
• President George Washington issued the first national Thanks giving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
FALL LAWN CARE - QUICK TIP!
Fall brings back ideal growing conditions for your lawn. Cool nights, warm days, ample rainfall and morning dew are just about as good as it gets for grass. Now the lawn is ready to grow again and is looking for the nutrients it needs to recover from summer damage. Some experts will say this is the single most important lawn feeding of the year.

ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our beautiful community.
FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

FORT BEND VOTING CENTERS
This November 3rd, Fort Bend County will be changing the way we vote on Election Day. Voters will now be able to cast a ballot at any of 78 Vote Centers. In the past, they could only vote at one assigned polling location. About one third of the Election Day polling places are new, so voters are encouraged to visit the Fort Bend Election website, www.fortbendvotes.org in order to find a convenient voting location.

A joint effort by Beck leadership and the PTA, the event included schedule pick-up, spirit wear sales and classroom tours for students and their families. Beck Cheerleaders paraded the halls to make it a festive affair and volunteers included PTA members, teachers, retired educators and Katy ISD trustees. Principal Carra Fleming recently announced that Beck’s theme for the new year is #BJHNoLimits, to reinforce that the possibilities are limitless for all students. • Interior & Exterior House Painting * Cabinet Painting

KATY ISD PROMISE TO READ
We recognize that not everyone has unlimited time to volunteer. But we are thankful that, every year, hundreds of people have time to read to our children. Promise to Read brings Katy’s business community into elementary schools each November, allowing adults to share their love of reading and allowing children to indulge their love of being read to. From Alcott to Zalbern, wockets in pockets to monsters in closets, guest readers sit down in little chairs in front of little faces and the room is transformed. Promise to Read is a tradition in Katy with many of our readers having participated since the program’s inception in 1997. Some bring their own books from home - others let the librarian or teacher choose one for them. But in either case, everyone agrees it’s the best 30 minutes they’ll spend all week. For more information, contact Heather Sanders at 281-396-2645.
KATY ISD FOOD FOR FAMILIES
November 1st - December 11th - In 2014, our Katy ISD community raised over $25,000 helping 502 students and their families in our district. This wonderful initiative, held each December, allows the community of Katy to bring a little joy into the homes of some of our students and their families. Principals identify students for the program, and Partners in Education collects community and corporate donations. Grocery gift cards in the amount of $50, along with a note of support from the Katy ISD community, are then delivered to each student by a campus staff member. If interested in making a contribution, make checks

KATY ISD JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We’re proud to point out that Katy ISD has the largest Junior Achievement program in the world. So by the time our kids start their senior year in high school they’re completely familiar with JA, beginning in kindergarten when they learned about visiting a farm and planting a garden. Junior Achievement is a great venue for volunteering because it allows folks to build a relationship with students in a classroom. Volunteers attend training hosted by one of our on-site JA staff and are given a satchel full of materials pertinent to the class they’re teaching. And whether the lesson is about opening a donut shop or investing in the stock market, students all learn about work-readiness, entrepreneurship and how to dream big in the business world. Although numerous Katy ISD Junior Achievement classes are taught by parents, we have an impressive cadre of businesses who step up to do their part, with some companies “adopting” an entire school’s program. Whether you’re interested in teaching JA in a day at the junior high level or teaching five one-hour classes at an elementary school, it’s the perfect way to have some face time with a classroom full of kids. For more information, contact Necole Gibson at 281-396-2439.
KATY ISD KEYS MENTORING
KEYS mentors are adults with knowledge and experience to share, who have the desire to motivate students to reach their full potential. activities - and although they may help with academics, mentors are not tutors. In Katy ISD, KEYS offers four opportunities for those who wish to join our KEYS mentor family: Traditional Mentoring - Pairs one mentor with one child once a week. KSR (Katy Students Run) - Matches running coaches with high school students as they prepare for the Houston Half Marathon. Mentor Buddies - Offers every other week option for volunteers. Two mentors partner in mentoring the same student, coordinating their schedule so the child sees one of them at the same time each week. Dads with Dads - Places experienced Dads from the community who collectively coordinate their schedules to meet with groups of young high school fathers. KEYS is offered at every Katy ISD campus, each of which has a staff liaison who oversees the school’s program. All mentors must make a one school year commitment to a student and complete an application and background check. For more information, contact Martha Brown at 281-396-2468.

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.

BLACK FRIDAY TIPS • The best deals are usually on the big-ticket items (think over $500). If you’re thinking about buying a big-ticket item, Black Friday is a good time. • The goal of major retailers is to keep you in the store! They want you to do more of your shopping in their store to increase market share. Be aware and don’t get distracted or overwhelmed. Plan ahead and know the store layout! • Bring someone with you to split up and conquer tasks! • Popular items, especially Black Friday Doorbusters, will sell out and aren’t available via raincheck. If there’s a deal you have to have, make sure you get it early! • Check online: some deals can be had online without the inperson hassle. But many deals are only in stores or only online, so make sure you double check! • Wear comfy shoes, bring snacks, water and stay patient, don’t let it get to you too much! There’s always CyberMonday! Courtesy of marioarmstrong.com/blackfriday

November has been designated National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and it is about time we recognize the 5 million Americans living with this disease and the 10 million family caregivers that make it possible. Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that attacks brain cells diminishing a person’s memory and becoming fatal over time. It impairs memory, thinking and behavior and is responsible for more than 50 percent of all dementia cases. The onset of symptoms most often develops slowly and worsen over time, until they become severe enough to interfere with daily life. The fear of Alzheimer’s may be in part due to the fact that there is no cure and the treatments that exist for Alzheimer’s are not extremely effective in slowing the progression of the disease. Current drugs for Alzheimer’s help to subdue the symptoms for only half of those who try them and on average, the drugs are only effective for a year.

SPECIAL NEEDS GROUPS ENJOY A DAY TOGETHER AT ST. PETER’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
NETWORK TEXAS HOSTED BENEFITS FOR SHIELD BEARER
Two of Katy’s communities of adults with intellectual and physical disabilities gathered together August 13th at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church. Adults from The Arc of Katy visited St. Peter’s special needs ministry Hearts Helping Others (H2O). They enjoyed a visit from the Journey Ice snow cone truck, which is operated by Everyday Opportunities, which serves children and adults diagnosed on the autism spectrum. H2O is a ministry of St. Peter’s that serves adults with intensive special needs, specifically those who have finished their secondary education and need additional assistance with life skills such as feeding, mobility and hygiene. H2O meets weekly at the church for socialization and communication opportunities. The Arc of Katy has grown tremendously over time and currently serves about 30 adults with a variety of intellectual disabilities. It provides a safe environment for participants to engage in social and physical activities. They currently meet at Camp Cinco, a Katy Family YMCA facility, four days a week.

Proceeds from these events directly benefit Shield Bearer’s human trafficking recovery and intimate partner violence prevention programs. Houston is the number one human trafficking hub in the country due to interstate access and the close proximity to the border and Port of Houston. Many victims of human trafficking are children and in desperate need of mental health services for trauma, addiction and depression.
