STAYING POSITIVE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON
‘Tis the season to be jolly, but all too often we find ourselves feeling stressed out rather than joyful this time of year. Though the holiday season can be stressful at times, it is important to remember the true reason for the season and to stay positive. It seems year after year Thanksgiving is the kickoff to a season of greed and discontentment. Just hours after finishing the Thanksgiving meal, people rush out to begin the frenzy of holiday shopping, overspending, and complaining. So many people spend the holidays comparing themselves to others and are disappointed when they feel like they don’t measure up to those around them. We complain about the lack of square footage and not enough oven space while preparing a feast for our families, meanwhile forgetting that millions of people are going to bed hungry and homeless each night. One excellent way to stay positive during the holiday season is to get involved with a local charity. Whether you spend a day feeding the homeless or giving out toys to local children, seeing how other people live will open your eyes to how truly fortunate you are. Getting the entire family involved can be a wonderful learning opportunity for children. Seeing so many kids who don’t get presents makes it awfully hard to complain about not getting exactly what you wanted on Christmas morning. Another key practice to staying positive is to stop comparing yourself to others. Everyone has a different idea of how the holidays should be. Don’t feel disheartened when your family doesn’t decorate as elaborately as the house next door. After all, happiness is not related to the size of your Christmas tree or the number of presents under it.
Remember the true meaning of the season and don’t get overwhelmed by the details associated with this time of year. The heart of the holidays is love and peace. Rather than getting stressed out by holiday traffic, long lines at the mall, or maxing out your credit card, focus on showing love and compassion to the people around you. When you do this, you can’t help but enjoy the holiday season. Source: cphblog.com
HOLIDAY SHOPPING SAFETY TIPS
Shopping during the holiday season can present unique danger. Taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season joyous. The holiday season is a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips from the Los Angeles Police Department Crime Prevention Section can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season. 1. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. 2. Dress casually and comfortably. 3. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. 4. Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible. 5. Always carry your driver’s license or identification along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use. 6. Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings. 7. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. 8. Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible. 9. Keep cash in your front pocket. 10. Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused. 11. Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

12. Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, transportation terminals, bus stops, on buses and other rapid transit. 13. Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps. 14. Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, con-artists may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings. Source: LAPD Crime Prevention Section

OIL STAIN CLEAN UP
1. Clean up any fresh oil stains by blotting the surface with newspaper. 2. Sprinkle a layer of clay-based cat box litter over the top of the oil stain. You want to completely cover the stain so that you can no longer see it through the litter. The litter will soak up the oil from the concrete.
Enchantment Kids Fine Arts Learning Center invites friends, families and neighbors to…
Saturday, December 12th • 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
3. Monitor the color of the litter several times while it is sitting on the stain. As the oil becomes absorbed into the litter, it will change to a darker color. When the litter changes colors, remove the old litter by sweeping it up with a broom. Dispose of the discolored litter as you did the oil-soaked newspapers. Sprinkle more litter onto the stain the same way you did in the prior step and continue to let it soak up the oil. Leave the stain covered with litter for a minimum of one day. Clean away all the litter after 24 hours. Sweep up the litter and dispose of it.
Enchantment Kids FALC 4031 FM 1463 Suite 14 • Katy, TX 77494
4. Apply a liquid dish detergent with grease-cutting agents to the oil stain. Use a scrub brush to rub the detergent into the stain.

5. Allow the detergent to settle for five minutes, then scrub the detergent into the stain again using short, circular movements.

6. Pour 1 cup of boiling water on to the dish detergent covered stain. Use your scrub brush to rub the water and soap into the stain. Take care not to burn yourself. 7. Blot up the now oily and soapy water with newspaper after the mixture has cooled for several minutes. Dispose of the newspaper. Continue to blot the area until you have absorbed all of the oily water. 8. Pour another 2 cups of boiling water over the stain. This will wash away any oily water that was not absorbed by the newspaper. Be careful not to burn yourself. If the stain is still present, repeat the process.
PLANNING OUTDOOR HOME IMPROVEMENTS?
Please remember that when planning outdoor home improvements, you must first complete an ARC form. This form is submitted to our Architecture Review Committee before construction can begin. For questions or for a copy of the form, please call First Service Residential at 713-932-1122 or email at contactus.tx@fsresidential.com.
REGULAR WATERING
Regular watering, mowing, edging and weeding are ongoing homeowner maintenance responsibilities. Your neighbors love you when you do your part to keep the community beautiful and they complain to others when you don’t. Your Association management team is receiving an abundance of calls concerning dying grass and lack of mowing/edging/weeding. Please note, your management team is sending out violation letters and charging back for ‘force mows.’ If dying grass cannot be brought back to life, the resident will have to go to the expense to re-sod. For all our residents who consistently do an excellent job at maintaining, we sincerely thank you for your hard work.
CALL BEFORE YOU DIG REQUEST
Before performing work on your property, call the “Texas One Call System at 811.” They will mark the location of the utility lines easement within your property. Remember, damages to any utility lines within your property can affect services to YOU and YOUR neighbor’s homes. Thanks for taking time to call before you dig!

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom. • Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month. • Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure. • Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again. • Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch. • Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged. • Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

KATY ISD FOOD FOR FAMILIES
November 1st - December 11th - In 2014, our Katy ISD community raised over $25,000 helping 502 students and their families in our district. This wonderful initiative, held each December, allows the community of Katy to bring a little joy into the homes of some of our students and their families. Principals identify students for the program, and Partners in Education collects community and corporate donations. Grocery gift cards in the amount of $50, along with a note of support from the Katy ISD community, are then delivered to each student by a campus staff member. If interested in making a contribution, make checks payable to Katy ISD Food for Families. Any contribution amount is accepted. Mail or deliver check/cash to Katy ISD Partners in Education, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Room 1520, Katy, Texas 77494. For more information, contact Tammy Stringer at tammyrstringer@ katyisd.org or 281-396-2645.

ONE KATY STUDENT WINS WRITING CONTEST - READ3ZERO
On Saturday, November 14th, the Houston non-profit literacy organization, READ3Zero, honored one Katy student at a memorable Luncheon and Book Signing event for this year’s winners of the “I Write” contest and celebrated the organization’s sixth year. The student is Sachi Khemka from Taylor High School. The Awards Ceremony offered individual recognition in the form of a certificate of excellence to each student author and illustrator followed by the Literacy Luncheon and Book Signing with Honorees, Neil and Maria Bush, co-chairs to the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation, Luncheon co-chairs Michael Pearce and Matt Burrus, emceed by Deborah Duncan of Great Day Houston. The luncheon was held at the Hilton Americas located at 1600 Lamar Street, Houston, TX 77010. Founded in 2009 by children’s author and public speaker, Melissa M. Williams, READ3Zero has embarked on a mission to help share aspects of the literacy and publishing world, influencing the lives of children to learn outside the classroom. One of the primary creative projects at READ3Zero is the annual short-story contest, which emphasizes the concept that reading and writing go hand in hand. The program provides leadership and speaking opportunities to the students after they are published. Children are also allowed to submit drawings for the front and back cover of the book. Organizations, businesses and community members are able to help fund the efforts of READ3Zero by contributing support for future projects. Getting Someone a Musical Instrument for Christmas? Don’t forget the Music Lessons! Piano • Guitar • Bass Guitar • Violin • Viola • Cello • Voice Drums • Flute • Clarinet • And More... ALL IN ONE LOCATION!
Are we the right music school for you? We are less than 7 miles from you, located at 23922 Cinco Village Center Blvd! The Conservatory of Music currently teaches over 21,000 private music lessons per year. More music students take lessons at The Conservatory of Music than at any other music school in Katy.
CONSIDER FIVE BENEFITS OF BECOMING A CONSERVATORY STUDENT: 1. Piano, guitar, bass guitar, violin, viola, voice and drum lessons in one location. Schedule lessons for different children at the same time - saves hours of driving and waiting. 2. The largest & most qualified teaching faculty in Katy. Between our two locations, in Cinco Ranch and North Katy, we have over 30 instructors, all with either University training or professional performance experience. Our music instructors are dedicated to learning about your personal musical goals and in helping you to achieve them. In addition to their teaching credentials, our instructors have warm personalities, are extremely friendly and dedicated to teaching you the style of music that you want to learn. 3. Open 6 days a week to fit your busy schedule. 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Saturday 4. Free, all inclusive, “optional” recitals so that your family & friends can share in your musical journey. Approximately every May and December, our students have the option of performing in our recitals. Students are not required to perform but many choose to. Parents never have to pay admission or any related fees for these recitals. 5. A comfortable waiting room for parents, so that you can relax or get work done while you wait. Instead of waiting in a music retail store showroom, with all the noise and other distractions, our clients enjoy a spacious, professional waiting room with comfortable chairs and magazines. We also provide observation windows on every door so that you can watch your child’s lesson while you wait, or if you prefer, you can sit in on their lessons at any time.
